All coming from Mexico, one of the reason to shut down the board and ship illegals home. When they come here illegal they have no health check and bring in all kinds of health problems and spreed them to us and our children. This government better take a look at this. TB and hep and Aid are other problem like child hood diseases we had under control.

sorry but these germs will get here anyway as there is vacation and business travel and other routes. don't pick on the poor and disenfranchised. get a flu shot. there are new needles which hurt less.

yes the borders need more control and americans should prioritize their fellow citizens for jobs for a better economy. write your reps and demand an end to the H1B visa program and sanctions of employers and individuals who hire illegals.

Well, I don't think it is going to change what is happening by closing the border but then it becomes rather obvious if people didn't travel to get this stuff, didn't have contact with each other, the pigs are in Mexico, so that leaves the birds as carriers. If they are the carriers then short of shooting every bird flying north out of Mexico, you won't stop it.

Maybe the USDA can microchip all the birds since they want to microchip everything else and stick it to the farmers and consumers at the grocery.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Now let's just think that maybe some terrorists came through the border illegally knowingthey had the disease. And are now making their way through the country. Hope they go to Nancy Pelosi's hometown.

Closing the border would reduce the amount of exposure, thus lowering the number of cases.

It would not prevent it, because people do travel, but it would certainly help.

This is another one that is going to raise questions about the actions of the Bush administration. Over 8 years, using Julie Gerberding, the Bush administration has politisized and downsized the CDC. Qualified researchers have been moved out and unqualified physicians moved into their place. Many qualified people have quit because the political climate prevented them from being able to do their work. A significant number of research papers were squashed because they confliced with administration policy on things like second-hand smoke, air and water pollution, and global warming. Those researchers have since moved on.

When it became obvious that a significant effort would be required to combat the possibility of Bird Flu, valuable opportunities were missed to reform vaccine production, to reform early reporting procedures and put in place a meaningful emergency plan for coping with a Spanish- Flu-like pandemic.

Another big mess you've gotten us into, George. (Sounds a little like Laurel and Hardy.)

SWINE flu is just another word for 'KILL THEM DAMN PIGS' - yes, rid this country of that animal - it is a dirty animal to eat or use it skin for anything - Jesus/Isa never ate that filthy animal, so why do people eat it like they do...no, it is a animal no longer needed to clean up the filth on this land as a scaventure, we have 'landfill' for that purpose.....the time to stop consumming this animal is now! Beef, lamb, goat and chicken are animals we can live with as long as we don't take them out of their nature by feeding them feed with 'animal byproducts' - this is why we have deceases now that we've never had when I grew up during the 60's - 70's....stop messing with nature and leave plant and animal life to grow naturally....organic food is what we need to force the gov. to abide by from this day forward....write congress and force them to change .. no more 'chemical companies' ruling our lives, telling us what to plant.... no more GMO in our food....peace out from money earning Mt. The CDC isn't worried about deadly influenza that originated from questionable sources? Someone has either purposefully or accidently infected people with a highly suspicious and dangerous strain of influenza. An investigation and quarantine is imperative.....after all it is the job of the CDC to do all it can to prevent pandemics......

Questioning the direction taken in the previous decade over the funding, management, staffing and direction of any organization, especially one with the strategic international importance of the CDC is always of value. Chris you did a great job of laying out the issue with out giving into the possibility of mud slinging, but don't get too worried, a lot of the staff moved north to the Level 4 Lab in Winnipeg - where a lot of the testing on this virus is currently being done.

In this period of international travel boarders are fairly useless and in this case, the areas of Mexico being hardest hit are the areas that are mostly tourist destinations. With an inability to forbid travel to those areas, the best most governments can do is tell their citizens to watch for symptoms.

The issue with this virus is that it is airborne and that the US cases are occurring in populations that are not travelling and don't own pigs, which seems to indicate that the disease is already present in the community. In Mexico, the virus is also killing an age group that is not normally seriously impacted by flu. So something to watch...

Thanks, JennyLee ---- lots of them went to Emory (including my wife, a PhD) where they are setting up something of a "shadow" CDC waiting for the political winds to shift.

We never made it past the point in vaccine production reform where the CDC determ ined that enough doses could be produced to cover physicians and "key members of government." They they decided that since they couldn't produce enough vaccine for everyone else, they early warning wasn't nearly as important. I sat around and listened to these discussions on my patio in Atlanta for two years.

People simply do not understand the severity of a flu pandemic. The "Spanish" flu (the same strain as swine/bird flu - H5) killed more soldiers on all sides than enemy bullets. That included Americans. People do not reaalize that antibiotics do not help with viruses. People do not realize that the single greatest reason that so many are dying in Mexico is a lack of ventilation equipment. We have enough ventilation equipment to treat as few as .5% (one half od one percent) of the victims in a Spanish Flu-style pandemic. One must assume that the few vent sets that do exist would be commandeered by FEMA for "key government officials." Once all the vent sets are in use, our mortality rate will be as bad as Mexico's.

A golden opportunity to be better prepared was lost since the Bird Flu vigil started.

Human Flu, Bird Flu, and Swing Flu spliced together into one organism is obviously made in a lab and an attempt at an intentional epidemic.

Did anybody read the article last month on the pharmacuticle company Baxter sending regular Flu vaccines to 19 countries that contained LIVE BIRD FLU mixed with regular human Flu? This is just another attempt at an engineered virus and epidemic.

I agree that vegetarians will be healthier. Eating swine -- nicer, sanitized names given to the meat = pork, ham, bacon -does not cover up the fact that it is almost impossible to cook this meat to where the parasites in it die. You cannot get it hot enough to kill some parasites. When you buy that sausage patty or eat bacon at a restaurant, you have no control over how it was cooked. To quote Albert Einstein: "the human race will only be healthy when they stop eating animal meat." I assume he was a vegetarian. He also recognized that disease is transmitted through meats. My pastor teaches that if you don't want to have arthritis don't eat pork. That does not mean we should kill all the little animals, just stop the practice of eating them.

Absolutely correct. Our corrupt politicians have no concern for the citizens of this country. Time to stop immigration from third world countries whether legal or illegal. Yes, Mexico is a third world country. Swine flu, mad cow, bird flu and polio are now in this country. Maybe if our elected (so called) representatives had the same health care coverage as most of us they would think twice about allowing these people into the country.

Ah, but according to which country? If you were born in another country and you came to the US illegally, the US would recognize you as an illegal when you are found. However, if you return back to your country, they won't see you as an illegal (unless you are wanted for something really serious crime-wise, they might think otherwise). There are reports of illegals who get caught in the US, get deported, and yet, years later, they are in the US AGAIN, illegally (in certain cases, legally. I'm talking about illegal ones).

Deborah ... if these were "illegal immigrants", at border checkpoints, they would be detained in Mexico and not allowed to return. The illegals don't travel back and forth .. please think before you label folks when such labeling in your context isn't a possibility! I live in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and yes, I am sure that there are "illegals" quite near me all the time. But to say that they are the ones that are responsible for these outbreaks is really stabbing someone in the back, so to speak! (sorry but my opinion on labels) ...

I am MRSA+ and have been for going on for 2-3 yrs with frequent sepsis and skin lesion flareups which make me isolation material. I hate it, being sick all the time is no fun, but as to who actually passed the bug on to me will never be known. Just a careless hospital worker or two or three with poor hand-washing and sanitation techniques. Not from any illegals, that's for sure!

The HIV virus originally came from monkeys in Africa, bird flu from birds, etc. Now, if, and not everyone will agree, you are a Bible-believing person and have read the book of Prophecy, you will agree that these sicknesses are coming mostly from animals and are overtaking the world in one way or other. It is all the sign of the end times coming. No, it may not be today, next year or even in the next fifty years, but the turn of all world events, including these sicknesses, show that the "end" is near and it is all on the books, so to speak....

Not trying to stuff my beliefs down anyone's throats, that is I am not trying to prosteletyze, but it is my own belief and that of many who follow "End Time" teachings.

And yes, to be totally free of contact of any of these diseases which are airborne or even thru contact, we pretty much have to shut ourselves off from society! And that would include our families who are in contact with others. It depends so much on a person's immune system as to whether the infection will invade and cause illness in him/her. Not everyone who is exposed to viruses or bacteria get sick from them. But sadly, those of us with lesser than whole immune systems pick up every little bug that comes along. I am sick of being sick. And do my part to try to take care of myself, all the time reminding those around me that they need to use gloves in my care and to wear masks if I am having a respiratory infection. When I visit my doctor's office, I wear a mask if I have a cough so I can try to protect those around me. I take responsibility for my own actions, which is what everyone should do to help contain these illnesses.

Hope I made myself clear, but when I read most replies, I just "glopped" my ideas and feelings together in my mind and wrote them down and added what I know and believe to be true, medically and theologically.

          JMHO...

egp do you know how many illegals you have in California and Mexico? Many have returned often enouph that the government decides to let em be. You even have the Democrats luring them to become American citizens. Illegals and immigration in general is a strain on all countries. I think all borders should be closed for a while until many issues are sorted out.

The best defense is a good offense. We just taught our children how to avoid getting and giving germs with a new teaching program called Germy Wormy. I highly recommend it to help young kids understand how to not get germs in a way they can understand. www.germywormy.com is the website.

The flu was first found in Pigs then mutated and humans caught it and is now passed easily from human to human. The Bird flu will do that some day too.

In love with orangutans: Actually, a few years ago, there was a strain of bird flu that mutated so that it could be contacted by human-human. However, not much is known/said about it. All we ever hear about bird flu is that the person infected caught it from an infected bird.

I got violently sick in Texas on a recent trip accros country. Being very familiar with Little Mexico -Texas to California, I was constantly using my anti-bacterial hand cleaner, to no avail. I ended up coughing up blood and having a temperature of 104 for two days. This was the worse illness I've ever had. The discomfort was worse than when I broke my leg, three ribs, shoulder disloacted or collar bone broken because I coudn't take pain killers and had to wait until the fever ran it's course. I was very upset at myself and the bureaucrats that allow us to be put in harms way for a percentage.

60 people have died from the flu in Mexico (that they've counted) this year. 16 of those cases are confirmed swine flu. What about the other 44?

I do not believe what I and many others had is the swine flu, but a variant of a more potent flu strain because people often take antibodies and aspirin when you're not supposed to. What is it going to take for our citizens to be protected from the imported crime, drugs, and now illnesses being brought to this country by illegal immigrants?

Once again, America never does anything until there's a crisis.

Consultant what are you talking about? You asked a question and I answered it:

How is the disease transmit, by air or eating pork?... :-) got to ask this..

Why do they call it Swine Flu?

                  How do you avoid it?

You would expect some guidlines, or have I missed these?

Disease fights to live as we do, animals get sick, they pass it to other animals of the same species- like a dog with kennel cough...... the pig flu eventually mutated to where humans pass it from one to another, this isn't blame , it's evolution of disease.

And Checkmate I remember that brief story about the bird flu that mutated but it seemed contained to one family if I remember correctly? Thank God it hasn't gone much further.

This flu could have started anywhere there are pig farms, including the USA. Also, it is TOURISTS that will probably spread it, FLYING ON AIRPLANES. Not only that but tourists flying on airplanes have probably ALREADY spread it to many countries worldwide. The name of this article should have been "Pandemic, just a matter of Time".

(Unclassified, on the internet) Considering that throughout the United States at most Universities, Colleges, Private Corporations (especially Pfzier), US Military Research Facilities, US Military Contractors, Department of Agriculture Research Facilities, etc.. Increasing the number of facilities, increase the risk of a leak. Most of these locations have extremely lethal "bug" (no cure, just treat symptoms). With many of these locations only having Biohazard Level III, not the required Biohazard Level IV, nor do the first responders have this capability either. The type and kind of decontamination is limited to Class II or Class III at best. And especially the National Guard having no or limited containment (with out hazardous exposure) capabilities (becoming potential carriers outside of the quaratineed area).

(Unclassified on the internet) At all 50 States at "Research Facilities" (including the one State that would have been Geographically Isolated as the last hope for humankinds survival in the even of a true Pandemic, Hawaii): Spanish Flu, Argentine, Korean and Bolivian hemorrhagic fevers, Lassa fever, Rift Valley fever, Sverdlovsk anthrax, Legionnaire’s disease, trichothecene fungal toxins, marine toxins, small molecular weight toxins of microbial origin, simian hemorrhagic fever, Avian Flu, Viral Hemorrage Fevers (all the types Arenaviridae, Filoviridae, Bunyaviridae, Togaviridae, Flaviviridae), Original 1979 African/Cuban "unknown disease" (later called HIV/AIDS, as tracked by CDC and USAMRIID) .

(Unclassifed on the internet) With leaks occurring at various locations with Bioharzad Level III and Level IV, including the island off the East Coast. With containment of all forms of transmission including the routine spraying of airborne vectors (birds and insects). The most known leak occuring called the simian flu (later called the Reston Ebola)(Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C.). (Sheep) Antrax outbreak England. Mad cow disease outbreaks. Ebola Zaire. Marburg Ebola.

(Unclassified on the internet) How about those digging up the stuff at Earth's natural containment locations, the Arctic and Antarctic. Like the baby mammoth wearing only HAZMAT equipment, not biozard Level III "spacesuits". It can be seen that one of the researchers touches his eye glasses (eyes being a thin membrane) with his gloved hands after directly handling the corpse.

Anna from Texas the avian flu that occured with a whole family dying caught it directly from their domestic chickens that they were raising at Vietnam.

On a funny note, (Beastiality) gives a whole new meaning to "choking the chicken" (avian flu), "squeeling like a pig" (swine flu), "stump trained cows" (mad cow disease), etc.. Of course this is not funny when you really think about this considering the result could be a human terminating Pandemic.

A historical (science fiction with many of these "inventions" becoming science fact) note of a pandemic "germ" wiping out a entire race. H.G. Wells,1898, War of the Worlds (1938, 1953, 2005, 2006, 2008 as a case of germs and "Natural Selection", extinction of species event) . The threat of a pandemic wiping out the entire human race, 1969, Andromedia Strain (1971) Andromedia Strain (2008) . Possibilites of digging up something at the Arctic and Antarctic, The Thing (1951, 1982). (title unknown) Oil Exploration crew catches a disease at Arctic, 2008. 1901, "First Men in the Moon", 1964 Movie, cough wipes out civilization of the moon. 28 Days Later (2002). 28 Weeks Later (2007). The Sentinel (2006). Outbreak (1995)(based on contigency CDC Plans). The Hot Zone (1994) TRUE STORY. These lists goes on forever.

My previous training (US Military Officer) included Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, handling, containment and decontamination. Resulting in actual handling, decontamination. And assignment as a Emergency Reaction Response Team Leader (US Military Officer).

Your are completely wrong. Most foreign diseases are brought back by TOURISTS, not illegals. There are hundreds of thousands of toursist and business travellers every day all over the world, they come back usually healthy, but some return with malaria, tuberculosis, and many other diseases. Tourists brought SARS back from Asia. Tourists have probably already spread this disease to many countries of the world by airplane, and the cases will be showing up in the next week. Closing the border is uelless.

Also the reason why nations don't practice biological warfare? It can't be contained, it comes back to bite the one who started it. Disease has no respect for national boundaries, and remember this: Animals spread disease too.

GOZO-unlimited - you think all of your placebos have not been already tried. With the full resources of the US Government and US Military, not to mention true cures must be under the USFDA by Law.

And to all those that stated that these "bugs" mutate for survival you are correct.

Also, pertaining to "natural foods" you think these things select food and water sources.

Those that oppose controlled irradiation of food and water sources, might want to think again as this is one of the few means to truely decontaminate these "bugs", irradiation is always occurring, example Sun and UV (Ultra Violet) light.

To the person (poster) that mentioned research into "second hand smoke"; believe the hype, look into heavy metal poisoning from laser printers (graphite). Then you have everyone trying to be "green" and switching to mercury filled Compact Florenscent Lamps (Light Bulbs), with many Countries banning the manufacturer and use and switching to LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) Light Bulbs. You try deconaminating a room filled with mercury vapor (vaporized mercury from between the glass and plastic housing after being heated up, manmade product with faults).

My "opinion" ALL research must be sent to Johnston Atoll (Island) and far away from ANY human population with US Military Grade decontamination (Class III/IV) and containment (Biohazard Level IV).

To all those opposed to closing the borders. This is a matter of Risk Assessment. Closing the Borders creates what is known as a geographic barrier. This is not fool proof, as mentioned about travellers. However, this does minimize the risk of rapid spread (outbreak, wildfire) before a vaccine, antiviral can be synthesised and mass produced. With those travellers being screened before, during, and after the flight.

So doing nothing is not an option and self defeating.

And to those that some people in the World do not have a fatalistic view of life and would use a biologic, think about all those people that willingly strap on a suicide bomb vest. Proof that not everyone thinks like you as a pacifist, live and let live. Especially those that have multiple suicide bombers, one blows up the innocent civilians, the first responders arrive and the second one blows up.

Before you say something stupid how do you thing the disease from African prostitutes got to the US. Cuban Military (requested by USSR) at Africa soliciting African prostitutes that ate monkeys with green sores. The ILLEGAL Cuban Boat People with many being let out of prison (including those Cuban Military that were infected at Africa). This showed up in Florida, travelled up to the Northern US then went to the Western US. Before you say squat this was tracked since 1979 by CDC and USAMRIID. Later named AIDS/HIV.

Does it matter who brought this into the country? The fact is: it is here.

I don't know about you, but this article scares me to death. Instead of wasting time blaming illegal aliens, tourists, businessment, the government, and each other-- maybe we should be talking about ways to mitigate the disease.

I've read a lot about the 1918 flu epidemic, because of the history involved with WWI, and because my 1st cousin, twice-removed, had a husband that came home from the war and died of it. So, I had an interest. It was a bad time that ruined many lives, changed the course of events, and it could easily happen again.

Anyone that doubts the power of an epidemic should read Stephen King's novel, The Stand. Yes, it is an exaggerated, fictional account of a flu epidemic that killed 99.99% of all people in the world, but it has some interesting lessons to learn about the spread of the flu virus, and people's reaction to a mega-disaster.

What can we, the average Joe/Josephine on the street, do to protect ourselves and our families?

It matters as to how to effectively contain, treat and monitor the disease.

First, close the border, decrease the possible incidents (spread) within the US, Risk Assessment/Analysis (decrease the risks). Especially, if the people in another country are seeking (unlikely) medical attention (cure) within the US, that their country does not have (strain on limited ill equipped (for this) US Medical Facilities/Capabilities). This does include limiting and restricting travel and monitoring of travellers under the Acts that established Homeland Security and later expanded (funded) after the Avian Flu.

Second, give enough time for the US to develope a antiviral, antibody or antigen.

Third, treat the US Citizens without the disease see sawing back and forth between both countries. Otherwise you will have to treat and cure all countries (not enough resources, just a moneytary reality).

Fourth, worry about treating everyone else in the neighboring Countries after you have your situation under control.

Fifth, reopen the borders after the disease is eliminated, not just contained.

Sixth, monitor, monitor, monitor. And you don't stop monitoring (note: this happened due to the budget cuts, Reduction In Forces during President Clinton, and these capabilities have not been restored yet, will take many decades to recover from to train competent qualified scientists and US Military (you did not know that this is a US Military function, USAMRIID and another US Military Agency(s) (classified)).

These are International Disease Control Protocols, not opinions. With opinions being like rectal orifices, everyone has got one, except some are smellier than others.

Diseases do not give a rats butt about being Politically Correct, Opinions, Politics, Steven King Novels (even if he uses a lot of Science Fact), Racism, Conspiracy Theories, Tin Foil Hats, etc..

Wonderful ideas, David. Is this what is happening right now? It would make me-- and other Americans-- feel a lot safer if so.

I did know about USAMRID, because I read the book, "Outbreak". Yes, "The Stand" is a part of a non-scientific, fictionalized, (I think I used that word before), account. But it is a very interesting, and for those of us who have never really thought about it--eye-opening-- account of the way a virus can spread-- and how society can break down. From what I've read about the 1918 flu, society stopped functioning for awhile in the hardest hit areas.

Let's hope this thing can be contained, the people treated and cured, and the rest of our country protected. Have a great day!

David what you stated is correct and needs to be laid out so more people can understand in helping to prevent wide spread disaster.

I used to fly quite a bit and would often have nasty symptoms or a cold or flu until a friend told me to take a swab and put just a little petroleum jelly around the inside edge of my nose. When I got to my destination blow my nose and then wash my face and hands, get just enough water into my nose to clean it out. Gargle with Listerine and and this would help.

I don't know about the medical facts of this proceedure but I have not had a cold or virus in 12 years.

Another good idea is to keep all kitchen utensils out of sneeze and cough zones. The same for bathrooms; cover those tooth bushes and buy a new one every month and after a cold. Dial soap is one of the best anti bacterials.

Travel with a can of Lysol and spay the bed and pillows bring your own pillow cover if you like. I'm not a germ fanatic but given the epidemic proportions of bed mites it's worth being cautious.

Frankly, a good stiff swallow of scotch, vodka, whiskey, pick your poison will help kill what is in your throat. Mixed with honey which does not allow bacteria to grow also helps. For you tea toddlers, use it in tea.

                          Stay well my fellow Americans.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. English settlers killed off the Indians with contageous diseases. In our time we are destroying habitat and causing unprecedented mass extinctions of plants and animals. A few million dead white people is a drop in the bucket compared to the lives we have extinguished on this planet. The world is overpopulated anyway.

I guess there aren't any illnesses that originate from the US. /sarcasm

Let's not think of it as an "us versus them" issue. World health and disease is something that affects us all. Yes, some countries that are less developed are the origin of more illnesses than others, that eventually spread to the more developed nations - but I don't see the same folks who complain about this being unhappy about trade agreements and business practices designed to maintain the competitive gap between this country (US) and those same developing countries who provide us inexpensive products and materials. If all countries had similar levels of development and safety regulations, etc. - we would not enjoy many of the "advantages" that we currently do.

To me, it's the same hypocritical rhetoric coming from critics who complain about Chinese factories employing unethical labor practices, who also shop for bargains and select cheaper items produced in China.

Has it not occured to anyone that microbiologists are working all over the world experimenting with various viruses? Is it beyond belief that some of these are intentionally or unintentionally spread to find out if cures being worked with are safe and satisfactory? How about creating the problem AND the cure for corporate profitability? Sound far fetched? Of course. But, neither can it be totally discounted.

Yes, I know about paranoria. I'm also aware of how easy it is to fall into the conspiracy mode. But just consider how easy and profitable this could be for any unethical enterprise.

Yeah, most likely a tourist. This "close the border" stuff is useless in the case of epidemics. This thing is spreading so quickly that tourists and business travellers have probably already spread it worldwide. Best to wash your hands, don't pick your nose, and hope your public health officials call for the same kinds of measures that are being put into place in Mexico City.

UrbnPrsn - that is fatalistic as mentioned in post 2.31.

So by doing nothing you just increased the risk, until you prove that it was a traveller or tourist. So no precautions, until you finish your months long investigation/research. Leave the barn door open and hope that the rest of the animals don't escape. Ok, leave that mouldy food in the refrigerator next to all the just bought good stuff, without isolating the spoiled stuff (put into plastic bag or throw away) from the good stuff (put into containers or plastic bags).

"wash your hands". LOL. Go buy a UV Light and magnifyer and look at how effective that was. All those things that glow just happen to be what is known as gram negative, usually the fatal stuff. Ok, you wash your hands, where are all those "germs" (viral, bacteria) getting splashed to. If you haven't figured it out the contents of most soaps are a perfect growth medium for "germs", like gelatines, agar or glycerines. Perhaps you should be interested in a Med School Micro Biology Course/Lab, especially "sterile procedures".

buzzorn, mexico chooses which guns it shows to the U.S. to examine and they only give us 1 out of every 10. Most of the guns they have come from other nations south of them and China. Most of the guns in mexico don't have serial numbers. They haven't had them removed...they were never there. Every gun produced in the U.S. has a serial number.

Every single account I've read of guns and/or money being taken over our border (and I've read plenty for over 3 years on a daily basis) always, always, always are being taken over by mexican citizens or so-called "American" hispanics. They have friends/family/connections there, so it makes sense that it's mostly them taking what guns do come from the U.S. to mexico. There was a report done recently by the U.S. that showed that only 17% of mexico's guns actually come from the U.S. Knowing what a bunch of habitual liars people in that outhouse are, as well as many of our own politicians, I'm surprised you believe that hogwash that "all" their guns come from the US. Gun control advocates just love people who drink the kool aid so willingly.

The weapons used by the cartels can't be bought in the US. They use full auto (Machine gun) M-16's. We can only buy semi-auto AR-15's. They look like M-16's but can't shoot a stream of bullets. They use RPG's (Rocket propelled Grenades) That you can't buy, period. President Calderone even admited that but the press stopped covering that. Gee! I wonder why? Oh yeah! President Obama wants to use this as an excuse to disarm America! Be advised, every time a government has disarmed their citizens, a terrible tyranny has immediately taken over and was behind it from the start.

                                                fire-em-all,

I fail to see how you could possibly know what guns the cartels all over Mexico are using. Yet, like a good and faithful wingnut you find a way to involve your president in a way that has nothing to do with the story. Way to go! People like you make me realize how far down the evolution ladder the average wingnut really is.

May I suggest that before you call people names, you might try to discover how to use the Internet helps ---like Google and do your own searches. It seems like an awful lot of name calling is done by people who will not look up the facts!

Of the thousands of weapons captured by the Mexican authorities, about 6% were identified as possibly coming from the U.S. of these about 90% were identified by U.S. authorities as coming from our country. Hey ! that's 5.4% of the captured weapons.

awfton those of us in the US Military are required to know what the types of Weapons are. Realize that those were full automatics not semi automatics and if you do not know the difference come here to Afghanistan I will demonstrate this for you.

FYI how are they getting these full automatics is what you should be asking, as the only real source (those quantities) would be Federal (US Government).

So if those weapons are being bought by the (corrupt) Mexican Government from the US Government (Foreign Military Sales) and then being sold to the drug cartels by the Mexican Government. How do you cover your arse if you are the corrupt Mexican Government. Blame it on anyone else. Don't believe it go to Mexico and see how corrupt the Mexican Government Officials especially the Police are (on the take in some of the kidnappings, or paid to ignore crime (or die)).

And the AIRPORTS? Your are forgetting about the Airports, tourists, business travellers, etc. This thing can jump 10,000 miles in a day. Legal travel is the biggest threat here. Think about how the world works, not just about your hatred of immigration.

Capn-1 is correct and UrbnPrsn is wrong. And you mention hatred of immigration. What is mentioned is the difference between Legal (medical screening) and ILLEGAL Immirgration, which you cannot understand is ILLEGAL.

Are you one of those that believes that risking the entire population of the US is worth ILLEGAL Immirgration (RISK ASSESSMENT). If you do then you also believe that Laws are only to be obeyed at your convience and only by everyone else.

Like I mentioned before, screening of Travellers. This was first used (as evident unbeknownst to you) during the Avian Flu scare. Travellers screened before during and after flights/travels as well as on mass transit at other countries (again something you did not know about).

UrbnPrsn go to Mexico and see the unsanitary conditions that most live in. Also go volunteer at Mexico to help the Mexicans instead of critizing others for their fear (possibly justified) of a Pandemic. Next time I get sent to Darfur, you want to see disease, famine, unsanitary conditions, come with me, the closest example of Darfur to the US, is Mexico (and some places in SA (South America)).

Mike: Where do you come up with we hardly survived his 8 years? Do you own a business? If not, shut up! I did really well with Ronald Reagan and George Bush Jr.. With Clinton I almost lost my business and for the last 2 years under the Dems, looks like my business is going to go under. The only time people made money in this country was under Republican control. Too bad if you don't believe that, but small business stats say it is so. Also, DO NOT HIRE OR USE ANY BUSINESS that employs illegals and these people will have to go back to where they came from. Employers will also close up and start working the legal way.

The last outbreak of Swine Flu happened in1976. The President would have been Ford.

I, too, agree that our best and most prosperous times were under Ronald Reagan's watch. How proud he made us to be Americans--in my opinion, and probably as history will write it, the BEST President of modern--if not all--times. Thank you President and Mrs. Reagan for living in our lifetime!!!!!God bless you and God Bless America!!!

Just wait until we have the 10% US Military Budget cuts then you will see how much of the detection, prevention, cure, monitoring part of this type of incident was handled by the US Military. Just like all those US Army Corps of Engineer Projects in the US (to be cut). This is the same as when President Clinton chopped the US Military to the bone and caused the US Military to lose the capabilities of Logistics, Food Service, Supply, Transportation, Water Purification, VIP Protection, Special Warfare, Human Intelligence (HUMINT), US Army Corps of Engineer Projects at US, etc. that caused the rise of the US Contractors like Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater, Triple Canopy, etc. (those Billions USDs going to the paychecks of US Civilians (not Iraqis), with their unemployment when we leave Iraq). Also closures of US Military Installations that destroyed the Civilian Economies around those installations (research what would happen if USN leaves California). Also most do not know that all the US Military provides support to US Military Special Operations, like the USS Bainbridge. Where did you think the Budget Surplus of President Clinton came from and why we now suck at Special Warfare (having to recall (force) us "older than dirt" from Retirement, because it takes decades to properly train Special Warfare Operators, not months (Conventional US Military)).

What I did not mention were the Government Owned Nationwide Dispersed Factories that build all the US Military Equipment. That since 1994 NAFTA cannot be bought from GM, Ford, Chysler since all their parts are made at Toluca, Mexico; Machau, China and Shanghai, China and the US Military must by Law "Buy US Only Products, Goods and Services". These will be closed under Base Realignment and Closures, BRAC. More US Civilians unemployed. This was alluded to by the CBS Evening News, pertaining to F-22 equals US Jobs, US Military Contractors, but did not mention the GO/GOs and GO/COs.

What are you people going on about????? You can get swine flu from eating pork. The issue is that virtually all new strains of flu are formed as mutations in passing between birds, swine, and humans. The flu's that can really kill rarely even sicken the swine or the birds. The isses is that in thge transmission process, generally from birds to swine tyo humans, in order to pick up new transmissability, the genetic coding of viruses is so small that it has to give up something --- usually virulence. That is, in mutating to pass easily between humans airborne, it usually also mutates to a mild form that doesn't attack the lungs very badly. The bird flu kept mutating, and retained the virulence, but could not master airborne trasnmission. The last one that did was the Spanish Flu in 1918. Given today's populations, if the exact strain hit as in 1918, a billion people could be killed because of faster modes of travel and greater population crowding.

So do chickens, deer, horses, sheep and cows - ever hear of bird flu, mad cow disease and "lock jaw"? Even mice in the West have been known to carry the "black plague" and that is deadly.

Early settlers raised pigs for meat to eat and lard for cooking. They could be kept in relatively small enclosures and were cheap to feed. Raised and cooked properly - pig meat is healthy and nutritious.

DWF, there are a lot of animals that eat their own feces: dogs, chickens, cows, horse, fish.. . .They only eat their own feces to get more nutritional value if they are lacking it. Also, just an interesting thought: Because a cow is chewing its cud, does that mean it is eating its own vomit? Seriously. I want to know if it is almost the same thing.

If you have I doubt you would care for pork. I never recall a cow, deer, or horse eating its own feces but our livestock was always healthy and well cared for. No a cows cud is not feces that is why they call it cud.

Coprophagia is the consumption of feces, from the Greek κόπρος copros ("feces") and φαγεῖν phagein ("to eat"). Many animal species practice coprophagia as a matter of course; other species do not normally consume feces but may do so under unusual conditions. Pigs, will eat the feces of herbivores that leave a significant amount of semidigested matter. In certain cultures it was common for poor families to collect horse feces to feed their pigs. Pigs are also known to eat their own feces and even human feces as well. However, domesticated pigs should not be allowed to eat any sort of feces, as this contributes to the risk of parasite infection. Muslims cite this behavior as a prime reason why they do not eat pork.

My neighbor raised hogs in the 60's. He let them run loose inside a 10 acre fenced wooded area. Since they weren't confined to a small pen, the area did not stink. He did warn us neighborhood kids never to go into that area, because the hogs were dangerous. We never let any of the adults know how many times we got treed by angry hogs, after going in there anyway. (We never would dream of letting our parents know we went in there, because our parents didn't believe in 'sparing the rod' when raising kids.)

Pigs/hogs do love human flesh. Remember the serial killer in Canada who fed all those victims to his hogs, then sold the human-fed pork. They never were able to trace where all the pork went. Perhaps some went into hot dogs, pork products, spam-type products, etc. Some might have been canned or frozen, and might continue to be sold in the USA today.

I'd like to know if those DNA splicing (human DNA into pig genes in order to lessen rejection of organ transplants) operations are affecting the mutation of swine flu. If those human/pig hybrids get the flu, does it mutate to infect humans more readily? Looks like the swine flu is spreading quickly. Tonight's 6 pm news said there's now ove 1,000 suspected cases.

And I still have not found out what happens to the meat from the human/pig hybrids after the organs are harvested. Does it go to market...is it sent to food banks...or? Wonder if it's sent to Mexico & if that contributed to this new flu mixture.

I wonder if human-fed pork and human/pork hybrids taste sweeter than normal pork. Has anyone noticed any pork products that taste sweeter or slightly different than normal pork? (I just threw that last part in for the heck of it - I really don't think it would taste any different...lol.)

The U.S. Government is doing it for Population control? So a virus that has sickened 7 people here in the U.S., killing none, was done for population control? Or was the target Mexico? Still, killing only 60 people out of a population of over 100 million hardly seems effective, does it? I guess its back to the drawing board for those evil, U.S Government Scientists, huh? Since when do People in the Government need to propagate a plague to do something corrupt or unethical? Do you have ANY idea of how many people would have to be involved in a conspiracy of the scope that you are suggesting, and that NOBODY would have an attack on their conscience and report it to the Media? Please develop a world view that you haven't received from Hollywood movies.

The Government has released the Virus to cause panic so they can push more restrictions on us that we would not normally agreed to? What restrictions do you suggest that the Government would impose on us in response to a plague? That Americans don't go into work, further collapsing the economy? That we all wear surgical masks while in public? ( Perhaps these evil Government types have invested in corporations that make surgical masks.) How about that daft conspiracy theorists such as yourself are not allowed to vote?

May I suggest that you make any repairs to, and adjust your tin - foil hat, as the U.S. Government mind - control Satellite is due to pass over your house any minute now.

If it possibly originated in Mexico we need to look at that as a country that was a potential source for the disease. However, or whatever. It is a third world country. I don't know anything about their meat processing policy and disease control prevention, and it stands to reason that with fewer resources there is more risk for disease.

However this thing spreads from person to person and there is an immediate threat and potential in that fact alone. We need to figure out what we are dealing with here without pulling out all the prejudices and hand waving about 'illegals' and how they cross the border, and who your kids may or may not be sitting next to at school.

All of that is grossly speculative, counter productive and will only detract from a sane and logical course of action in the long run.

                                                                          On another note...

ALan H - if you saw some of the things that are going on (first hand) you would realize how the dismissal of events (witnessed) and proclaimed as "Conspiracy Theory", "Tin Foil Hats", etc. are just as bad as those that are wearing the "tin foil hats" (aluminum foil, not tin).

Especially pertaining to disclosure by the now kow towed US Media, especially after certain incidents occurred (imprisoning of US Journalists by the US Govenment). Example: Movie, Nothing But The Truth. This has been going on since things like Watergate, Agent Orange, Bay of Pigs, Iran Contra, Venezula, Columbia, Panama, Spain (US loss of Nuclear Weapons), etc. and other cases where the US Government did not want the "Public" to know, aka "Need to Know" (Classified, National Security), by jailing (years) US Journalists pending formal criminal charges (decades) as more of a US Government CYA, than "National Security" (Classified). So in this case tell that to the US Journalists that are currently in jail or prision (General Population), with their lives destroyed (divorced, child custody, federal criminal record(s), etc.).

Yep, "tin foil hats", "conspiracy theory". So is H.R. 1955 and S.1959, March 2009 and censorship of the US Internet, US Media and the capability to arrest/detain any US Citizen as a "Homegrown Domestic Terrorist" or anyone that proposes a "radical change to Government" (that includes demonstrations, protests, revolts, or even mentioning it verbally (witnessed) or written (like here)) as usual. My involvement is that if assigned to NORTHCOM, will I order my men and women to shoot US Civilians if ordered to do so. Knowing that if I disobey, I will be immediately executed for High Treason (Executive Order) and my friends, family, relatives will be possibly be constantly detained, questioned and released for durations unknown also be placed on "watch lists" like the McCarthy Era "black lists".

Remember that for every case that is seen by the medical doctors and recorded as a case, there are many milder cases that are taken care of at home. SO the death rate for this disease is not 60/1000, it's much less than that.

People with mild cases probably spread this disease to the cases in Texas that have no known contact with infected people. That does make me feel better about the whole thing. Go to the doc if you feelreally sick.

I'd like to see a breakdown of the victims (elderly/very young/sick?) before starting "Bird Flu 2 - The Sequel!" - which killed more people and wasn't even a pandemic.

But - it makes a great headline on a slow news day - just like the bird flu filled in when news was slow during that time.

But then you read the article and it states that the person either owned or was near the infected fowl and that the animals were living in filthy conditions. It's really funny if you think about it: Americans were freaking out about bird flu, but not many died in the US. Meantime, in certain parts of the world, the death toll is slowly rising.

It is primarily a rural issue in Southeast Asia, due to poor conditions and direct contact with contaminated birds. If you *did* get it, nasty stuff - but it took some effort.

I don't hear any statistics about % of people killed vs. # of people infected - so 60 deaths (none in the US) is just a number. Out of how many? What was the age/wellness of the victims?

People clamoring for sealing the border shouldn't complain when Japan/England seal off our beef because of fear of Mad Cow. Fair is fair, right?

(The Spanish Flu Outbreak of 1918 is the one in particular that is cited in reference to this in a few articles.)

I s'pose that it could just be a slow news day, but...

I'm just saying - predicting such a thing before it is actually in full swing isn't exact science. The last acknowledged "pandemic" was quite some time ago (probably due to modern medicine) - but I don't think anyone knew ahead of time, but rather after it was already established. AFAIK (and I'd love a link to show otherwise, if anyone has one), no one has "called" a pandemic ahead of time and been right about it.

I know that there have been some cases of Mad Cow here, but the ones I know of were travelers, so most likely picked it up elsewhere. Nasty disease, that one.

I worry more about the Yellowstone Candera than the flu. There is a bad thing, ticking away, and geological events that are repetitive tend to be awfully consistent <- so yeah, I have my own "run away!" thing ^_^

I know it is easier said then done but still possible. Just a sniffle is reason to stay away from others out of courtesy. Prevention is far better then the cure.

See post about UV light as a detection of hand washing.

Laundering clothes, must be hot soapy water, just to dislodge the "germs" (viral, bacteriological) and wash them down the drain from the fabrics. Cold water nor most chemicals does not break the bonding proteins of most "germs".

Cook your food well, most raw foods would have to be boiled for 10 minutes or more. Can you say burnt food. This does not include "thermophiles". The real solution is controlled irradiation of raw food (no residual radiation).

Another problem is for those exposed and seeking medical attention. How many doctors offices have the equipment necessary to detect infections on a timely basis, without outsourcing. Also how often are the surfaces and equipment scrubbed and monitored. Think of this as a business, the managers do, same as the hospitals.

Then there are the Hospitals, without isolated airconditioning, meaning that the central airconditioning spreads the infection throughout the entire hospital or in the case of surface contact "germs" how often are All the surfaces monitored and scrubbed. How many hospitals also have mass decontamination facilities. The only hospitals, medical clinics that I know of that do the above procedures (more stringent requirements) are the US Military Facilities.

I visited a Civilian Hospital (name withheld to protect the guilty), to see a dead relative (while on US Military leave) and was shocked as to how ignorant (uneducated) the hospital staff were on the symptoms previously displayed by the now deceased relative. Migraine like headaches, profuse bleeding from sinus cavity, large and small intestines (bloody diarrea), extremeities (legs and upper arms purple). My simple question was that if they checked for hemorrage fever, the comment I recieved from the staff was that is not typical in the US, and only in SA (South America) and Africa (meaning no one ordered the expensive tests). Uh, duh, I knew that (having been there and saw the symptoms). I also noticed the central airconditioning in the Critical Care Unit and got the heck out of there (almost running, not that it would have helped, if exposed). The relatives were touching the body and hugging each other, so if this was not an airborne and contact transmission guess what just happened. This should have been a quarratine case until they knew what caused the massive hemorraging (bleed out). If I knew what the symptoms were I would have never gone near the hospital even if I were wearing a "space suit" (Biohazard Class IV) or Self contained breathing apparatus ("Scott Airpack").

                                                                                          {"commentId":6698421,"threadId":"562113","contentId":"2727578","authorDomain":"david393071"}

The Japanese were hit the hardest of any country --- largely because they had almost no modern medicine at that time. The gauze masks were all that anyone could think of to try. They really understood very little about viruses then. Governments pushed the gauze masks to make it look like they were doing something. In the U.S. it was against the law to appear in public without one for a while. There were posters that said:

                                                                                            Obey the laws

It's prevalent through all ages. On a Tokyo train where people are literally smushed up against the windows, one person can start a pandemic easily.

Access to doctors means they diagnose and report contagious diseases earlier in the transmission stage from human to human. That is a great help in containing the spread of disease. If people don't see a doctor then no one knows what is going on. People travel with the disease and spread it far and wide.

Currently people on this thread are threatening Mexico and Mexicans with all kind of harm but no one really knows the origin of the disease. It could just have easily started here in the U.S. Millions of people live along the border most of them have no access to doctors.

Blood from infected monkeys was, and is still being used, in African tribal fertility rituals. That is where it came from. The tribepersons handling the blood of the infected monkeys became infected from a mutation of the strain and it was passed thru sexual contact, as it is today passed from man-to-man, man-to-woman, etc. Read up on it by Googling it... I worked in a doctor's office in 1988. His primary practice was medical care for HIV/AIDS. I used gloves and took whatever precautions were adviced by the CDC. I never became infected and am not afraid of ever getting infected as I know the boundaries of protection.

Sorry if anyone thinks this isn't relevant, but I just had to let dogmeat know that he is waaay off base!

Especially, if it was one of the varients of the original form that actually was passed from African Prostitues to Cuban Military working on USSR Projects in Africa during Zaire, Guana, Rhodesia, and other African "Wars". These Cubans (incurable) were imprisoned/quarantineed at Cuban Hospitals and Prisons and released to become the "boat people" that landed at Florida. With the CDC and USAMRIID, since 1979, tracking this outbreak since Africa to Florida, Northern US, and then to Western US, including the current varients. Meaning that this (HIV/AIDS) could have made you susceptable to the MRSA that you currently have (indicated by your previous post).

You indicated that you wore gloves, what about "sterile procedures" including but not limited to face shields (examples: sterile glove removal procedures, face (eye) protection). It can be said that latex gloves (similar to human skin) are porous, unlike vinyl gloves. With viruses being smaller than bacteria. This is what I meant about ill equipped, under funded and ill trained Civilian Medical Facilities (Hospitals and Clinics) as decided by Business Managers (not Doctors).

There are statistics if you look on google about the rise in TB cases in Mexico and then suddenly in the US. I remember there was one a few years ago that brought up some evidence that some illegal immigrants that were caught were found to have TB. Could they have already gotten it while in the US, maybe, but with the rising number of cases in Mexico, it is a good chance that they could have gotten it there. For all we know, it could be coming from some animal that it made into food. However, it doesn't hurt to look at where a 'Mexican' illness originated from.

Americans usually are more health conscious so if it spreads it most likely will be through the alien population .like it or not.

Forty five million Americans don't have health care and most don't go to doctors. Here is a report that shows oddly enough the difference in health and or health care between residents on both sides of the U.S/Mexican border is non-existent. The two populations mix continuously not including any illegal immigration. There are 14 pairs of sister cities that are essentially single metropolitan areas that happen to have a border pass through them. It also seems the population on the Mexican side may actually be more affluent than the population on the U.S. side.

Kimmmmm, another thing: Depending on where you live, the water can have chemicals/minerals in it as well, which might change the amount of flouride that you consume when you drink water. I am not entirely sure, however, I believe that every year, you can get access to your town's water breakdown information (basically, it tells you if there is any dangerous substance, how much, etc. is in the water). Toothpaste is not considered dangerous unless you swallow it in large amounts. As for children age groups concerning if it is safe for them, I don't kno.

EGP: how would being against illegals, which would be anyone entering a country (U.S. or otherwise) illegally equate them with the kkk?

Before you do get a cheap microscope and the gram negative stain and check it before you do. Or I could let you borrow one of my Special Warfare drinking tubes (anti microbial filtered) so that you don't get Amoebic dysentery and die from dehydration (continuous diarreha, vomitting)

I am not saying that the US Food supply is safe either (USDA's, USFDA's, US Military Veterinary Services (you did not know this) Job). It is not, especially since most products are not US only, example: Made In US, Dove Chocolates, recalled because it had Chinese Powdered Milk contaminated with Melamine (guess powdered milk from Oregon was not good enough (actually greed, Chinese was cheaper)).

About the natural and raw foods see my previous post #21.1

By the way about alcohol being used as a disinfectant (internal) that would have to be 100% USP Ethanol (drinkable), realize that if taken in too large a quantity will kill you. Also realize that most viruses can live in environments that would be fatal to you as the human host (reason why in most cases the symptoms are treated to make you comfortable versus eliminating the virus (disease)).
