It's not just Mexico's healthcare system that's causing this. Do you know that reporting of cases to US public health authorities is totally voluntary for private doctors? I myself have had flu symptoms for 4 days and went to my doctor today. I was told I have pneumonia and possibly the flu, but no flu test was done. So I could or could not be one more case, but my private physician's office doesn't see the need to find out - they just gave me an antibiotic and sent me home. How many more are there like me whose doc's aren't curious enough to do the test?

Mego-While it is true Mexico does have private hospitals but those are for the wealthy that can afford to pay. The majority of the Mexican population CAN'T go to a private hospital and ARE turned away from them. The people most likely to be spreading SWINE FLU are the people that CAN'T go to the private hospitals. Since this flu originates on PIGS the likely place to get it will be from pig farms and the workers on them. The owners of those farms likely don't live on them they just run them. This means farm labor(the ones breaking their backs to make someone else rich) is likely the place where it was picked up and spread. The reason that the US has had no deaths is because we actually have a decent health care system.........not a nationalized one where some government paper pusher decides if and when you can see the doctor.

That being said many farm laborers are the ones who come across our southern border illegally. This is a very serious concern and more border patrol agents or military needs to be deployed on the southern border to prevent anyone coming across......not just for the fact that they do not legally belong here but because they could spread a more virulant form of the swine flu as the affected people here seem to have a milder strain. On top of that we may find an influx of illegals trying to cross to try to access our hospitals.........at the cost of the taxpayers here since every hospital emergency room is required by law to treat EVERYONE AND ANYONE that presents to them. We do not need a pandemic here. We can be of more help to Mexico in containing this outbreak if we do not have to contend with a huge outbreak here. If our resources are used up to contain it here we will not have the means to assist the Mexican government and by their own addmission they only have enough doses of Tamiflu for 1 million which isn't even enough for the population of Mexico City let alone the rest of the country.

Mexico is- The fact is that the swine flu comes from pigs...meaning pig farms. Thus you can figure it is likely that the workers on the pig farms are likely to be at least carriers of the disease who passed it on to people they came in contact with. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the people who come across the border are farm workers and those that break their backs daily in Mexico barely eeking out their existence and not the doctors, scientists, lawyers etc. Therefore it is NOT a big stretch to figure that some that are in the process of or are considering crossing our border illegally may have come into contact with swine flu. With the lack of care, preparation etc. that the Mexican government has NOT done one or two or more could cross and be infected with the more virulant strain that seems to be in Mexico compared to the severity of the disease here. On top of that they may try to come here for treatment since their government is unable to handle it, as they admitted they don't even have enough Tamiflu for the residents of Mexico City let alone the rest of the population.

We are already in financial straits we can not afford a pandemic here nor can we afford to have a flood of illegals trying to get here for treatment because their own government can't help them. First, close the border, decrease the possible incidents (spread) within the US, Risk Assessment/Analysis (decrease the risks). Especially, if the people in another country are seeking (unlikely) medical attention (cure) within the US, that their country does not have (strain on limited ill equipped (for this) US Medical Facilities/Capabilities). This does include limiting and restricting travel and monitoring of travellers under the Acts that established Homeland Security and later expanded (funded) after the Avian Flu.

Second, give enough time for the US to develope a antiviral, antibody or antigen.

Third, treat the US Citizens without the disease see sawing back and forth between both countries. Otherwise you will have to treat and cure all countries (not enough resources, just a moneytary reality).

Fourth, worry about treating everyone else in the neighboring Countries after you have your situation under control.

Fifth, reopen the borders after the disease is eliminated, not just contained.

Sixth, monitor, monitor, monitor. And you don't stop monitoring (note: this happened due to the budget cuts, Reduction In Forces during President Clinton, and these capabilities have not been restored yet, will take many decades to recover from to train competent qualified scientists and US Military (you did not know that this is a US Military function, USAMRIID and another US Military Agency(s) (classified)).

Washing hands is good as long as the soap is not contaminated (fats, glycerines as ideal growth mediums for viruses and bacteria). Realize that soaps do not kill, they make water capable of washing the large "germs" off by breaking the protein bonds. However, some soaps do not nor are capable of breaking those protein bonds without vigorous scrubbing (like surgeons use scrub brushes). It is debateable if the amounts of phenols in soaps or "hand sanitizers" are in sufficent concentrations to kill most viruses or most bacteria. The same is with Lysol.

A way and means to detect and eliminate "germs" (viruses, bacteria). With sufficent time (exposure) is UV (Ultra Violet) Light. The "germs" will glow, especially the more deadly gram negative stain "germs". The proper exposure will kill most germs with too little exposure creating mutations (definitely not desired).

Most respiratory masks unless they are specifically designed to do so will not stop most "germs" due to the size of the pores of the fabric. For these reasons, the CDC, USAMRIID in mild cases uses "respirators", in extreme cases Biohazard Class III/IV "Spacesuits", or "Self Contained Breathing Apparatus" (Scott Air Packs).

Gloves also have their own problems in that latex is porus and vinyl is not. However, there are dexterity problems with the more protective vinyl and a lack of sensitivity. Vinyl is also more vunerable to many decontamination chemicals that latex is not. This is why the "spacesuits" (Biohazard Class III/IV) are made from multiple layers of vinyls, latexes and synthetic compounds. It can also be said that gloves can be used as carriers unless the "sterile process" is used during removal (always disgarded as hazardous contaminated waste, never recycled).

Washing clothing also is a matter of durability and type of material. In that it was common practice to use "hot soapy water" for the US Military. This usually broke the protein bonds of the "germs". This is not common practice anymore especially in the "Civilian World", in that cold water is normally recommended in clothing care instructions. The other practice in many cases was to use a chlorine substance not considered the same as a low percentage (5%) chlorine bleach, like Clorox.

100% USP (Drinkable) Ethanol can be taken internally based on body weight and body density. It can also be used to disinfect surfaces (10 minutes minimum soaking). This is not the same as the retail store available ethanol which is deadly if consumed.

Controlled irradiation of raw food products (including fruits and vegtables), before you object, research/learn Nuclear Physiology. Note the Sun does this all the time. And you are doing this on a very limited scale when you use your Microwave Oven (difference wavelength, frequency).

My simple question was that if they checked for hemorrage fever, the comment I recieved from the staff was that is not typical in the US, and only in SA (South America) and Africa (meaning no one ordered the expensive tests). Uh, duh, I knew that (having been there and saw the symptoms). I also noticed the central airconditioning in the Critical Care Unit and got the heck out of there (almost running, not that it would have helped, if exposed). The relatives were touching the body and hugging each other, so if this was not an airborne and contact transmission guess what just happened. This should have been a quarratine case until they knew what caused the massive hemorraging (bleed out). If I knew what the symptoms were I would have never gone near the hospital even if I were wearing a "space suit" (Biohazard Class IV) or Self contained breathing apparatus ("Scott Airpack").

I don't know where the info is coming from as far as the national health care goes there. My brother-in-law is a mexican citizen and when he needed an emergency appendectomy last year, after he recovered, he was kept in a "holding cell" until his family paid 75% of the hospital bill and that wasn't a private hospital.

JM, Tampa, FL - Swine Flu isnt usually carried by birds or insects. Its actually almost impossible for them to get the disease and pass it on. Also, migration patterns, for birds anyway, would make this even more unlikely.

Swine flu or SIV is rarely transmitted to humans. First case scenarios usually are found among farmers who work in close proximity with infected swine or poultry. Avian flu virus is of the same classification of influenza (type A) as swine flu. It is believed that virus found it's way into North America pig farms from China on migratory birds however there is no evidence that humans can contract this disease from these birds. Still, as Bill stated above, that's not to say it is impossible, just unlikely. For the most part humans contract this disease in the same way they contract most viruses and colds; through coughing, sneezing, touching infected areas that may have been touched by an infected person. The usual precautions should be taken as you would any virus infections.

The Secretary of Health in Mexico does not know the breakdown of male/female flu sufferers - where it started - what to do except close down all public places and schools and then has the nerve to imply that it started in the U.S.! Then I must ask you exactly where you live? A lot of people seem to have this "God's going to get you for that" attitude as if they think God is sitting up there in heaven with a quiver full of lightning bolts ready to zap anyone who gets out of line. Jock; and how many Canadians have you had direct contact with? I have had contact with hundreds. Not many of them would hesitate to trade their "free" health care for the insurance available in the US. Yes, Canadians have waits of MONTHS for critical things like heart care where the US you can get in to see a dr. in a matter of hours or mintues depending upon the emergency. Not in Canada; you wait your turn. If you are lucky enough to make it that long.....

Miskaffon, if you really dig around, you will find horror stories in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. I believe it all dependes on the city your are located in. I've experienced at least two horror stories in Texas, where you are kept waiting in an ER room for over 12 hours until a doctor agrees to see you (an that was because we had insurance). At the same time, I've attended hospitals in other states where the service was top notch. I don't believe that we can generalize.

Having had experience with both the Canadian and US healthcare systems, I can personally say that Canada's is far superior to ours. Even for seeing a specialist - my daughter was seen in 2 weeks in Canada for the same ailment that took 6 months to get an appointment to see a specialist in the US.

Jock-Here in America a hospital CAN'T turn you away, they are required by law to treat you when you go to the emergency room and you don't even have to 'prove' who you are....you can lie. I worked in a hospital billing department and many people came with no ID and we knew they lied about their name and address because they could not pay. However they were treated. I have a friend who is a Nurse from Canada she worked here as a traveling nurse for a number of years. She and her husband were expecting their first child so she went home during the 9 months prior to delivery she was alotted ONE visit to the doctor before she delivered the baby and that wasn't approved until she was into her 3rd trimester, a pregnant woman here would have been seen many times more often than that and then every week during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. A woman I dealt with while working in hospital billing advised me that a family member that lived in the UK (who also have a nationalized healthcare system) had a heart attack and needed an angioplasty( they put a catheter with a balloon in the artery to clear it out). Here in the states it would have been done immediately in the UK her relative had to wait more than 8 MONTHS....they pretty much hope the person dies before they actually have to do anything for them.

Julie-Not sure who your dr is but specialists can be booked up did you ever think of going to a different specialist or was your mind set on that particular doctor? If you chose them that is up to you. Also since it seems you are from the US you would have received different treatment than a Canadian citizen. They would have to get approval first since you have health insurance that would have been billed or paid for it yourself they don't have you jump through the hoops you would have been seen at the next available appointment while a Canadian citizen would have to have it approved and it takes months for approval. You can't compare your experience when you aren't a citizen of Canada.

Personaly I try to stay away from hospitals. Seems like more people die in hospitals than anywhere else.

The cases of swine flu in the US happened right after spring break when students were returning from their trips from Mexico. That I fear is a very real possibility since the Mexican government has admitted that they only have enough Tamiflu to treat 1 million people that is not even the population of Mexico City let alone the rest of the country. We do not need a swarm of illegals coming here for treatment because their own government can't or won't provide it for them. Hospitals can't afford to give away that many services. Facts are facts more than 60 Hospitals on our southern border have closed because they basically had to treat people for free.....illegals coming in with no money using the ER for a regular doctor. These are NOT write offs for the hospitals they are considered 'standard operating losses' the only way non payment can be a tax write off is if it can be logged as charity which requires paperwork by the patient and the hospital which of course the illegal is NOT going to supply. Check any border town or city you will find them filling the ER for a cold etc using it as if it is the family doctor they do this because a private physician can require payment BEFORE treatment where an ER CAN NOT they are required to treat first and attempt to get payment after.

I would venture to say that the flu was brought back by ANYONE that travelled in/out of Mexico in the last couple of weeks. You can't say if was students (pretty likely) or illegals, or legal immigrants for that matter.

I do think the whole "created an earthquake" thing was way out of line. Regardless of political opinions, real people are suffering, and they deserve our thoughts and prayers.

I am one for border control to make immigrants follow the letter of the law, but this isn't the time to discuss it. If things do get worse in Mexico, most likely travel in/out will be stopped - which is a typical action when dealing with this kind of thing.

No stopping and taking a breather after they get across. They jump in a van packed to the gills with other illegals and hit the road. All immigrants, both legal and undocumented, contribute more that 10 billion dollars to the economy of the US according to the National Academy of Sciences. In Seattle, which is a sanctuary city (one of very many sanctuary cities in the USA), illegals get food stamps, public housing, etc. Seattle has made it illegal for any government employee to question whether anyone is a citizen - even when that person applies for government assistance. Illegals can get drivers licenses in Seattle, and it is well-known that they are allowed to vote there.

I don't know what all of the other sanctuary cities (NYC, San Francisco, etc) offer the many thousands of illegals who can make it to those cities, but if illegals can make it to Seattle, they have all types of free benefits.

Well, since the places where many illegals are leeching off the taxpayers is in the sanctuary cities, how would Congress know how many illegals are there? In Seattle, they can't be counted, because it's illegal to ask (within the city limits) if they are illegal aliens. If you think it isn't true check out the 60+ hospitals close to the borders that have had to close because of them using them and having no ability, or willingness to pay. There are a number of border towns with no hospital within 100 miles of them because of this so OUR legal citizens and residents are denied emergency room and hospital services because of illegals using them as free clinics. You say you aren't arguing but you are trying to put numbers forth from agencies that have nothing to due with these services. Worse yet the numbers are just flat out untrue......have you checked out google and found that the CONGRESS themselves have put out reports showing flat out the services that we as the taxpayers provide to illegals is 383 BILLION every single year and that they by far use more services than anyone else. He had many cultures taken which were checked for flu before and AFTER his death and his body was tested AGAIN in autopsy. Negative for Swine Flu.

MEXICO CITY — Two weeks after the first known swine flu death, Mexico still hasn't given medicine to the families of the dead. It hasn't determined where the outbreak began or how it spread. And while the government urges anyone who feels sick to go to hospitals, feverish people complain ambulance workers are scared to pick them up.

But even as it did so, it acknowledged the outbreak began earlier than April 12, the date it had previously linked to the first case. Cordova confirmed Monday that a 4-year-old boy who was part of an outbreak in eastern Veracruz state that began in February had swine flu. He later recovered.

We are blamed for Mexico's poor economy (don't they have economists in their government?), the drug problem, etc. Now the Secretary of Health in Mexico implies that the swine flu started in the U.S. so we will be blamed for that, too. Good grief - what else do they want except to take over our country?

You people screaming to shut the borders seem to not paying attention to what is being said. The flu cases cropping up in this country are from our own people visiting Mexico and coming back. Vacationers and college kids on spring break. Are we going to tell our own people they cant come back. They come back on planes and land hundreds or thousands of miles inside our borders.

Not to mention that the World Health Organization has advised against closing borders and subsequently interrupting international trade. At this point containment would be useless and a waste of money. However you would like to believe the virus got into the US is irrelevant, it's there now, and Canada, Brazil, the UK, Spain, Israel, New Zealand...and by now probably more. Shutting town the borders would only further cripple the economies of the countries involved.

Here we go again people that never got educated about why CONTAINMENT is NECESSARY in relation to TREATMENT and STOPPING this. Reading the Article, it seems that the Mexican Medical Personnel are afraid, and I would be too, since I have had training and experience with this type of "incident". Mego- They are only saying it isn't feasible because the bleeding heart liberals will never agree to close the border period. A closed border would flat out prevent it from spreading any further in the US. It would contain it to the few people who are now in the US who picked it up in Mexico. Without a border closing people will come and go and continue to spread the infection unchecked. These were written into Contigency Plans. All the President and Congress has to do is say implement.
