California has two their waiting to get the autopsy results from. But with any flu you can and should expect this. Only the media involved so it's more apparent. Rest in peace to the baby.
My prayers and condolences go to the family of the child.
My sincere condolences to the family.
Public: Let's be sensitive here today, please and direct any unrelated comments to a suitable forum. Thank you.
...and so it begins...
It always makes me sad to see news about a child this age who dies. I almost lost a child at birth and have never felt so helpless in my life. I can't imagine what this family is going through. It is hard to accept, but this is how life goes, sometimes.
Iknow...I also experienced that helpless feeling a few years back when my son landed up in ICU with a severe flu. To this day, I will never forget that feeling. May this dear sweet baby rest in peace. My heart goes out to this poor grieving family.
Hopefully they will decide to close off the border now? I don't think they should allow travel - why risk more innocent children dying and millions of Americans?
My prayers go to the families.
SueZQ, closing the border isn't going to stop anything. The virus is already loose.
Rest in peace little baby - so sad for his/her family.
Closing down the border may slow the spread since there are so many infected in Mexico. It won't stop it from coming over because there are people that still come over even with closed borders.
If the virus has a major outbreak here in the U.S. we will be wishing we would have done something to try to stop or slow it down earlier. It essentially has to be quarantined as much as possible until it can be under control.
I know it would make life rough for those that need to cross the border every day but something should be done.
While the toddler death from the swine flu is saddening, it is also disgusting how the media blows it out of proportion! There are around at least 4,000 deaths from regular influenza every year; but just over 150 Mexican fatalities and 65 Americans are diagnosed with this swine flu, and all hell breaks loose!. All the media is doing with this is starting a panic! Hospitals, doctors, and nurses are becoming overburdened by people who are demanding they or their kids be checked for H1N1 swine flu. Please, its nowhere near pandemic stage! Enough is enough!
I agree with your sentiment but, Check your facts... CDC reports 36,000 influenza related deaths occur annually in the US. Until we see 100+ deaths per day, we have not crossed over what a typical flu does.
Such tragic news to wake up to. My prayers and condolences go to the family of the child.
My condolences to the family.
Children and the elderly are always hit hardest by nasty bugs like this.
36,000 people die each year from the regular flu in the U.S.
36,000 out of 300 million is approx. a 1% mortality rate.
contrast that with the swine flu...
150 dead out of 2,400 is approx. a 6% mortality rate (that's 6 times more deadly).
So if everyone in the U.S. catches this that will mean the deaths of 18 million Americans.
If only 1 in 10 americans get sick... that's still 1.8 million people dead.
...just a thought...
Scary numbers indeed.
dangerD. Your math is a bit fuzzy. 3 million is 1% of 300 million. 30,000 is one onehundredth of one percent or .01%, not 1% as you stated.
you're right, i forgot a decimal place...
but that means that the swine flu is even deadlier in comparison.
Danger-d,
Your comparison doesn't really work unless you compare the 150 deaths in Mexico to the number of people that die from Influenza in Mexico.
You are comparing the health care system of the United States where anyone can go into a hospital and be treated and saved possibly versus a third world health services system like Mexico.
Out of those 150 from 2400 that died so far, how many of them didn't receive medical treatment or were in poverty stricken areas where nothing was done until it was already too late?
So far the death toll in the US is 1. Possibly one or two more depending upon autopsies. I don't want to sound callous here, but they were also babies who haven't really developed their immune system and weren't able to take care of themselves or realize they were sick and get help until it was possibly too late.
News Update.
The child was not a U.S. Citizen. He was actually from Mexico City and his parents brought him into Texas to visit family and he was already sick.
http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2009/04/29/2748561-mexican-boy-visiting-texas-1st-us-swine-flu-death
And...according to the WHO...there has been only 7 confirmed deaths from Swine Flu...
http://www.smh.com.au/world/only-7-swine-flu-deaths-not-152-says-who-20090429-aml1.html
Any human being dying before their time is sad, especially for a baby, but jumping the gun and trying to make this look like a deadly pandemic that could devastate the U.S. when there is no basis for that is irrational.

GFON 1.25, +0.11, +9.7%) , an emerging pharmaceutical cannabis company, reported today on the current state of development of its whole-cannabis lozenge in response to Homeland Security Administration Secretary Janet Napolitano's declaration of a public health emergency to deal with the emerging Swine Flu pandemic. The Company's non-toxic lozenge has properties that could alleviate many of the symptoms and harmful effects of the H5N1 bird flu and H1N1 swine flu viruses, and has offered its assistance to HSA today in a letter to Secretary Napolitano. The Company has offered to produce up to 1 million doses of its whole-cannabis lozenge, and provide them to HSA for distribution at cost.
Cannabis Science Inc., President & CEO, Steven W. Kubby said, "We have the science and preliminary anecdotal results confirming the anti-inflammatory properties of our new lozenges and indicating they may present an effective and non-toxic treatment for minimizing the symptoms and harm from influenza infections. Our lozenges appear to down-regulate the body's excessive inflammatory response to the influenza virus, which could reduce the deadly consequences of an infection into something that is more like a common cold. Because of my cancer and diminished auto-immune functions, even common influenza is a deadly threat, and I've had incredible symptomatic relief with the lozenge."
Dr. Robert J. Melamede, Director and Chief Science Officer, stated, "The influenza virus has a unique genetic make up that, in combination with its replicative machinery, has an extraordinary capacity to mutate. As a result, the high lethality of some strains can be attributed to the resulting adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is caused by an excessive immune inflammatory response driven by Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) that leads to the death of respiratory epithelial cells and resulting organ failure. Endocannabinoids are nature's way of controlling TNF activity. Existing peer reviewed publications have shown that phytocannabinoids can prevent this cell death by mimicking the endocannabinoids that nature has selected to prevent excessive inflammatory immune responses."
Dr. Melamede, who is also a researcher and past Chairman of the Biology Department at the University of Colorado Springs (UCCS), cautioned, "Smoked marijuana will not effectively prevent the excessive inflammatory response, despite delivering the beneficial pharmacological agents, due to the irritating, pro-inflammatory nature of smoke. In fact, I believe it will make things worse and should be avoided by infected individuals."
Mr. Kubby added, "If a swine or bird flu pandemic emerges -- and everyone seems to think that it is just a matter of when, not if --, there is simply no time for the usual bureaucratic process. With emergency government approval, we can legally access the huge supply of medical cannabis available in California to produce millions of life saving doses within a relatively short period of time."
Dr. Melamede furthermore stated, "Based upon recent discoveries regarding the role that endocannabinoid system plays in maintaining human health, we have a unique solution to the looming threat posed by deadly influenza strains that we believe, if implemented, could save millions of lives. We will strive for an emergency review of our cannabis extract-based lozenge because we believe its availability will prevent many of the deaths associated with the hyper-inflammatory response associated with known lethal strains of the influenza virus. Current anti-influenza medications have a demonstrated decreased effectiveness against some of these lethal variants. Mankind cannot wait for the emergency situation to materialize. We must be proactive in gaining the necessary governmental approvals to test, and pending the outcome of our studies, produce our lozenge."
Mr. Richard Cowan, Director and CFO, who recently spoke in Mexico City to a conference sponsored by the Mexican Congress, stated, "I believe the Mexican Congress recognizes that doctors should be able to prescribe medical cannabis. We are prepared to work with the government of Mexico to produce similar medical cannabis products to help fight the outbreak there. We look forward to working with Government officials, including Homeland Security, to help advance our treatments for these outbreaks in Mexico, Canada, the USA, and around the world."
About the H5N1 Bird Flu and H1N1 Swine Flu Strains
The H5N1 bird flu currently has 63% lethality. A swine-derived H1N1 strain was responsible for 20,000,000 influenza associated deaths in 1918 (more than killed by World War I). The current lethal outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) in Mexico has killed over 80 people and infected more than 1,400 others. There are 20 confirmed cases in the United States, with reports of infections in Texas, New York, Ohio, California and Kansas. Additional reports identify possible cases in New Zealand, Canada, Spain, France and Israel. The H1N1 Swine flu is a porcine respiratory disease caused by type A flu viruses. Human cases occur in people who are around pigs, but an infected person can transmit the disease to another person. Symptoms include a high fever, body aches, coughing, sore throat and respiratory congestion.

Garry Minor, thank you for posting this information. You taught me alot about a product that I didn't know existed, and I'm sure many millions of others know nothing about, too. I hope our government will give serious scientific consideration to all products available to help with illness, and more specifically, with the immediate needs of swine flu victims.
It has been very easy for the prejudice ones to point the finger at Mexico and the inmigrants, especially the Mexicans, information is surfacing that most likely this viral infection began in the USA or somewhere in Asia. I feel sorry for those that have to suffer the racial prejudice day after day in the richest country in the world.
Jose, Tracking the origin of a epidemic is not racial profiling. It´s science. Get off the inferiority complex bit.
No matter where it originated, the most severe outbreak at this time is in mexico. The more people that have it the fast it is going to spread.
Jose, why are YOU being prejudiced and blaming this on Asia or America?? How is that any better?
It is a tragedy for the family that this baby died. There's nothing worse than this kind of loss. My heart goes out to them.
Closing the borders will not stop anything. Microorganisms travel by air, in airplanes, land vehicles, seaborne ships, goods, etc...It could come from anywhere, not just Mexico, some people really are narrow minded and prejudice. Do you know how may people travel daily from one country to another, within countries, including the USA military. Who knows what conditions or diseases these troops are taking to the USA.
It was just a matter of time before an illness was brought into the U.S. through our porous borders. Even if this swine flu did not originate in Mexico, we must not fool ourselves that our porous borders is the perfect opportunity for terrorists to use bioterroism. Who knows but that this is just that??!! or a practice run?? People in the U.S. border towns of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California are especially vulnerable and are starting to express their concerns on this subject. I don't blame them at all. We never anticipated airplanes would be deliberately crashed into buildings, either. I don't think we can dismiss a scenario that would be so easy to implement, especially with people who already cherish the martydom of suicide bombings. Yes, this idea is alarming, but please, people, don't allow the fact that it's so scarey to be the reason for it being dismissed as a possibility. To win any war, it is necessary to anticipate the moves of your opponent, and it's better to be on the offensive once a war has been started that to just be on the defensive (reactionary). We're already using precious resources to combat the drug trafficking coming from Mexico. We need to work with Mexico to secure our borders for our continuing safety.
Marty, I do not have an inferiority complex, I do not have that problem where I live, do not live in the states. I am comenting based on the prejudice sayings of people that write on this forum. I have an education in biology, aviation and government service ,have travelled extensively through the USA and abroad. Understand perfectly about science and other matters. Take the veil off your eyes and read the comments on this forum, you might be to see the ignorance of some folks.

Jose, No one is being prejudiced against mexicans...there was a report released this morning that stated that the first person to get the swine flue was in mexico...get your facts together before you play the race card....
Misspelled flu...sorry
This is the article that I was referring to
As more people in more countries become infected with this virus and as the death toll slowly continues to increase, it matters little where it started, be it Mexico, the United States of America or anywhere else. This is NOT the time to point fingers or lay blame.
As far as the "Cannabis Science Inc. Report" (posted above), I read this as nothing more than an advertisement for a small start-up company trying to make a little money by catering to the fears of people concerned about a potential pandemic. I have nothing against this company, cannabis, or even capitalism, but it does seem a little 'tacky' to me, in light of the current circumstances.
My condolances not only to the family of the child that has died in the US but also to the families of all that have died or have been sickened by H1N1.
Wait until you add MRSA/VRE to the mix, it will be toxic, our very own health care system is killing us by spreading it. http://www.wisecountyissues.com/?p=62 In East Tennessee, profit care comes ahead of patient care.
