Wonder if it was the same clinic where octo-mom got pregnant? Women this old should not be having babies. Thats why nature invented menopause. Now there are two kids with no parents.
Agreed... I don't understand the fascination some have with defying mother nature and having babies in retirement age. And worse, it doesn't sound like this woman left a backup plan in the event of her death. She simply relied on the fact that her mother lived a long life, which isn't necessarily the best factor for determining the state of one's health.
I'm not saying take away people's right to be stupid about their own lives, but it's not fair to drag other people down with them.
The clinic and the doctors should be fined heavily.
Kids are probably better off anyway. Can you imagine being in high school and having to come home and change your mother's diaper? Not a good environment to willingly put your child into.
Sad and sick!! She sold her house for the IVT; what did she plant on doing to raise the kids.....she was already retired???? Sad for the kids!! Just like Kate & John and octomom - the clinics and the doctors should be charged and thrown in jail!!! How sad!!!!
Kuskus: I'm in complete agreement. Retirement age is not supposed to be the time to raise a family--it's a time to revel in the accomplishment of the family you already had and the wonder that are your children (and if you didn't have one, to revel in the magnificence of your choice to remain childless--because for many, it is the absolutely right choice).
And I agree with your criticism that she didn't have a back-up plan, and simply thought that because her mother lived to 101 that she would, too. Outrageous, really.
how sad. does anyone (potential moms, clinics, etc) ever consider the babies??? chances are her brother is too old to care for them as well. the toddlers will be devastated with this loss! mommy was retired so a full-time mom...toddlers seldom like to be away from mommy even to go to day care or pre school. how sad...this made me cry! i pray someone gives the babies the love and comfort they will need. they must be scared knowing mommy is in heaven. kids need tow parents anyway! they just do. i don't give a damn if it's one mom and one dad or two the same sex they just need two! if for no other reason as a "back-up" plan should something happen. yes, i know a set of parents could go out for a night in the town and be in an accident or held up and shot, etc. but cut the odds anyway you can if only for the children!
that's what happens when you mess with natural Mother Nature..come on now, this is ridiculous to think, that things can be normal for birth at 66 years of age..chalk that one up for her stupidity..I feel for her babies though, and hope they have normal lives and are healthy..another whacko octomom here...
We need to stop allowing people from bringing babies into the world if they are financially unable to raise them, or they have no education or stable job.
Its sad that these two kids are about 4 now, without a mom, not able to understand what has happened to them.
Octomom needs to be neutered.
Spay and Netuer Animals, us humans are part of that animal chain!
So we should start spaying and neutering people that are junkies, alcoholics, homeless, carrying diseases (cancer, aids), and those that did not graduate high-school or at least have an AA degree or higher.
Just because people CAN be impregnated in their golden years, or have multiples, multiple times, doesn't mean they SHOULD. Some things should just be chalked up under the heading, "Bad Idea".
I just think it's extremely selfish. This woman probably had all hopes that she would live to be 101 years old, but with any life, there are no guarantees. Now, there are two more children left to cope and deal with selfish decision making.
Children are not pets or the latest fashion accessory. Just because medical science makes it possible, does mean that it should be done. People will debate the social and medical ethics of the practice or procedure, but as usual, the children are the ones that pay the ultimate price.
What I find rediculous about this whole thing, is that she wouldn't be able to have a baby naturally. At 66 I can only assume she'd been through menopause already. Not to mention the developmental risks to the babies while she was carrying them. I feel for the kids here.
I hate to say it but, she probably had dollar sighs in her eyes. She probably thought that the tabloids and other magazines would pay her big bucks for pics and story.
tywht63: maybe we can expand the sterilization to people that post stupid responses on Newsvine.
You know. Like someone that doesn't understand the diffrence between spaying and neutering. Which would include someone that thinks you can neuter a female.
I agree w/ CAA Illustration ~ so selfish.....mother nature happens for a reason and adoption is also there for a reason, there are plenty of kids in the world that need homes.
tywht63 - Can you honestly say that all of your ancestors had more than a high school education? Because if that's the case, I'd sure like to meet YOU! Education does not neccessarily feed into intelligence! And yes, she was stupid to think that having babies at her age was a bright idea. And I feel horrible for those babies.
Ok, I try to have a sense of humor, but with my rowdy 2 year old climbing the walls behind me, I have to wonder if the twins aren't what sent her to an early grave? The drugs from the IVF surely may have contributed to the tumor, and the exhaustion of raising twins in your late 60's could have been the last nails in the coffing.....I have 4 kids, they range in age from 21 to 2.....and I hate to admit I may be getting old, but handling a 2 year old at 22 is alot easier than at 41....I can't imagine twins in my 60's!
These clinics should send potenitial parents home with those dolls that cry all night....or foster babies....before they commit, so they know what they are really getting into...and it is a shame they don't screen patients better.....similar to adoption agencies.....and limit the number of embryos they implant....the industy really owes those children some responsibility for their future well being.....I think octomom and this ladie's family should sue the clinics for childcare expenses.....the clinics in both cases have acted irresponsibly.
Add worlds most selfish woman to her "other title"! I am curious to know whether the children were born without birth defects as the risks grow enormously with age. If she wanted kids so badly, she should have adopted, preferably at a younger age. Too bad for the kids.
To have a baby at age 66 was very selfish. I do understand that probably every woman wants a child but at 66 that was way to late in life. My mom had me at age 43 and now that I am 40 I just got the news that I will be a mother again before I turn 41. I was hoping for 10 years, but now I find myself asking the question: "Is 40 maybe already to old to have another baby?"
I hope and pray these kids will be raised by good parent who can give them everything they need. You do have more money at an older age.
selfish broad, though for sure she was american. guess stupidity is universal. since they're not american kids maybe some hollywood moron will adopt them.
My son was born when I was 43. He is my only child. He was a wonderful surprise. But I often wonder if I was too old to have him. I worry that I could die while he is still in school. I worry that I could get sick while he is so young and what would we do? I am 55 now he is starting junior high. I don't regret for a second having him, I have enjoyed every second of his life, that also comes with being a mature mom. I was never in a hurry for the night time feedings to be over, I never wished him to hurry with crawling or walking, or first words. A lot of younger moms wish for there babies to hurry with some milestones because they think life will get easier. I simply enjoy every day of his life. But I still worry what his future holds as far as how long I will get to enjoy him.
Same question I was going to ask. What the heck is going on with the California medical board??? And a lack of funds is not an acceptable answer, just a cop out. This is the same state that wants to legalize pot-right?? God help us all.
The life expectancy for women in Spain is 84 years old. It might be the stress of raising the children during the "terrible two's" might have been too stressful for her. She would probably be alive right now sipping a glass of red wine if she hadn't brought the stress of raising young kids into her life at such an age. Also, it appears that she may have put herself into financial distress in order to conceive the children, which certainly compounded the stress in her life. Word to the wise, one must know there are certain limitations in life.
When we think of ourselves and ignore the established norms we take a huge risk. These poor kids are already in the spotlight because of their mother and will probably have quite a time adjusting to the facts of their birth. There is a reason for the natural order of things and we should take thatinto account as we try to manipulate the world to fit our wishes. Everything isn't about us at this moment in time and unfortunately we cant have it all no matter how much we wish we could.
I've read all the previous posts and I think fewer than half of you ACTUALLY READ the article. The children are a little over 3 and a half and there are two as in twins!!!
All in such a hurry to excoriate that poor dead woman. Cary Grant had his ONLY child about her age and many less wealthy or famous men do as well.
And none of you must ever seek medical treatment because, after all, it was God who created disease. And you don't believe people should take advantage of scientific advances, including yourselves, of course.
How could they not know how old this woman was when they treated her? The story reported the clinic doesn't ask to see Birth Certificates. Well all the doctor offices I have been to lately require me to produce a picture ID. Unless she falsified her ID they had to know her age whe they did the IVF.
I agree. This clinic deflects responsibility by saying they didn't require their patients to prove their age. Well, maybe they should ask for a birth certificate! How could someone be so selfish? While I agree that women should wait until they are ready to have children, once you have reached 40, many problems can arise from even being pregnant.
At age 66, what did this woman expect? You can't just have children and hope for the best. You have to make educated decisions. This woman was clearly only thinking about her own selfish desire to have children and not what was in their best interest. The article seemed to portray the idea that she didn't even make arrangements for these babies if something did happen to her. Just because one of your parents lives for a really long time doesn't mean you will.
In the instance that someone should get pregnant naturally at such an age, which is very unlikely, a "backup" family should be put in place immediately. I am just appalled by this woman and women like her.
Usually picture ID's are only required if you are using insurance at doctor's offices because they're worried about insurance fraud, but yeah I guess this woman thought she'd live to raise them. You can't count on a long life because one or even both parents lived to a very old age. I can see how she'd want to be a mother though it may have been a selfish wish. Also Deb, you were NOT too old to have him or he wouldn't be here. Even 20 year old new mothers can't be sure they'll live to raise their children.
Yes, Yes, Yes. I think she was out of her mind and selfish. She thought only of her desire to have children, not the consequences for the children. I am in my early sixties and would never contemplate such an action. My sister had children in her early forties and realized how difficult it would be. She said she disagrees with older women bearing children.
If it's just about the children left behind, then nobody should be having children at any age...since people die all the time and leave children behind! That's life! Just ask folks in the military...we don't have ANY guarantees! So I think people should live the way they want to live.
Gonna have to disagree with you there. Yes, a parent can die very young but the odds are much better wit a young parent living long enough to see her children grown than a woman who is already in advanced years to do so. Sure, there are no guarentees about how long we get in life, but is it right to stack the deck against these children having any living parent to see to their upbringing?
They should live the way they want to live IF they abide buy laws and pay taxes AND can afford it. She couldn't; if you have to sell your home for IVF, you can't afford it. If these children become wards of the state, they become the taxpayer's burden, and that's not OK. If she wanted to become a mom, she could have arranged surrogacy or private adoption.
Then why did she feel like she had to lie to the clinic about her age? She knew what she was doing was wrong, but the clinic certainly has fault here since they did not ask her for identification (so she says). I think this woman had a few brain cells missing, and now those poor kids have no mom, and it appears she did not leave any instructions for their care since she thought she would live much longer. Again, she was not thinking clearly at all. Sad story no matter how you look at it.
To say live and let live is fine for those who don't care and tend to be irresponsible anyway. But sometimes you have to just give up the ghost. Your time is over,no time to have babies past 50 years old.You don't or shouldn't get what you want. Get a puppy, or take in foster children.
How about everyone use the word "person" instead of woman, because men should not be fathering children at advanced age either then. Children deserve a Father as much as they deserve a Mother. Viagra and the like should only be dispensed to men who have had a vasectomy.
You are absolutely right, FmntGirl. That's what I thought while reading the above comments. If it's wrong for a 66-year old woman to be having babies (and I agree it's not a good idea), then it's just as wrong for a man that age to be fathering children.
Children born to young parents not only have a better chance of the parent living until they are adults but they also usually have grandparents that could help with raising them if the parents do die. And yes FmntGirl I also agree that you need to look at the age of both parents not just the mother!! Just as a woman's eggs are not as viable as she ages the same goes for a males sperm and this is something that is just coming out in science. I am a grandparent and my husband is in his 60's and believe me when the grandchildren spend a day at our house he is totally wiped out and stressed. Young children are wonderful but they take more energy than you realize they are not just cute little angels that sleep and are well behaved without a lot of work. Discipline takes energy and is necessary to raise children that are not problems when older. As you might be able to tell by my response, I would not allow my grandchildren to go to a foster home but the grandparents are not neccessarily the best option for raising a child especially after 60 as the children do not need to risk loosing a second set of parents.
Actually you'd be about 4 times LESS likely to die in Iraq as a servicemember as you would be an average 65-74 year old living in the USA. (maybe Spain is different)
One can tell this was just a case of a really selfish woman by her quote:
"Often circumstances put you between a rock and a hard place, and maybe things shouldn't have been done in the way they were done, but that was the only way to achieve the thing I had always dreamed of, and I did it," she said.
Did it? Did what? People have kids all the time, raising them (well) is the hard part.
It's her own business? Is she taking care of where these babies are going to live and who's going to take care of them? It seemed as though the brother didn't even know what was going to happen to them. It sounds as though they may be headed for foster care, and become the taxpayers' responsibility. Therefore, it is not just her business.
There is a cosmic reason why these women, sometimes couples (like Kate and Jon Gosselin) are not meant to bear children. This woman didn't have children because she didn't feel ready until the age of 66...sadly she was shown it wasn't meant to be her destiny by her death...Jon and Kate should never have procreated because they weren't destined to be together long enough to raise their children in a healthy environment....octomom well we all know why she should never have been a mother...defying what's meant to be kicks you in the butt later...
It sucks but if you follow your intended path, your life will turn out fuller in other ways than satisfying your ego...
Really? How validating. The universe must approve of me then. It doesn't take much more than a friendly glance to get me pregnant.
Makes one wonder though... I'm kind of a B****. Come to think of it I can think of plenty of lousy people that seem to be able to pop kids out like pez. Junkies, and criminals, and and wife beaters, and child molesters... Far, far nastier propositions than Kate or 'Octomom', or that old woman that just wanted a child. Wierd.
So how do you explain all the women who pop out one baby after another and don't do @!$%# to take care of them? I've seen plenty of crappy mothers who have no problem getting pregnant. I think you have a major flaw in your reasoning here.
Look unfortunately the young women of today and the mothers who raised them won't use contraception, or have no shame about birthing out of wedlock. Society rewards these 'breeders' for bad behavior. Many women just find it easier to be lazy about how to keep from getting pregnant, after all there are the free winter coats give aways, free food from food banks, and subsidised housing, its a big ol freebie out there for all those heffers, and the boys they get knocked up by. Here in Oregon in my small town there are 4 girls walking pushing state of the art strollers, one is expecting again and not a wedding ring in the bunch. Sad thing though this is our future :(
I think the whole point of the post is to learn to be happy with the life you are given, it has nothing to do with how good or bad a person you are. If you couldn't have children for whatever reason when you were of child bearing age, as much as it hurts to accept, maybe instead of selling your home to have babies in retirement, accept that you are childless. Become a foster parent or foster grandparent, volunteer at a childcare center or hospital. Somebody needs to be around for the babies born into bad situations.
I always wanted more children. My husband and I have a wonderful almost 20 year old son that we couldn't be more proud of. We tried to have another baby for years and even went the way of naturpathy and fertility drugs. When none of that worked, we tried adoption. After 4 miscarriages and over 10 failed adoption attempts (we tried through the state, not private adoptions), I had to accept that we were only supposed to raise one child. It hurt, it was hard, and I shed a lot of tears, but, I got over it. Now, at 44, I realize that I just wouldn't be up to the task of having a baby full time. It's a lot of work! I will now gladly take my beautiful 21 month old Godson and spoil him rotten, then give him back to his parents, and then I'll wait for grandchildren, in both cases, all of the fun, not near the responsibility.
Hmmm... Maybe. But whenever I start seeing the words and phrases like 'cosmic', 'destiny', 'not meant to' and 'should' together it starts to smell pretty darn sanctimonious and judgemental.
There certainly seemed to be an effort to qualify certain things or aspects of people as 'good' or 'bad' without actually saying it. But, perhaps I misunderstood.
3.4;Look unfortunately the young women of today and the mothers who raised them won't use contraception, or have no shame about birthing out of wedlock.
If that were true, then there would be no reason for the rabid religionists to argue against birth control, would there? Birth control is the most prescribed medication in this nation. Most of those who don't use it can't afford it. There were more teen births (by percentage) in the 1950s than there are now. So let's not pretend the present generation is irresponsible.
Society rewards these 'breeders' for bad behavior....,its a big ol freebie out there for all those heffers, and the boys they get knocked up by.
I guess that pretty much sums up how little you think of women. Per your terminolgy, they're just animals -- nothing more than broodmares. Funny how that aligns itself to patriarchal beliefs about women not being worth anything except bearing children.
Martin Luther (1483 to 1546): "If [women] become tired or even die, that does not matter. Let them die in childbirth, that's why they are there."
Just breeders...no more than animals...as you referred to them.
Who's to say that John and Kate were not "destined" to stay together. That's ridiculous. I'm sure the stresses and strains of the children are partly what caused the fracture of their marriage. Sure, Kate is a b itch, but it's hard raising one or two children, let alone 8! They are both responsible, perhaps of John "grew a pair" he'd have been the "man of the house" and not a whipping board. THOSE are probably the reasons for their break-up, not "destiny"! Did you read that in your crystal ball?
I'm married with 3 children. I lost my health insurance a while back and could not afford to get birth control. After spending days calling around to clinics who supposedly handed out free birth control, I got the impression that I might have gotten help if I was 15.
To Linda Tedder, not all young mothers are bad mothers. I got married at 18, and had my first child at 19. I got a job and we made a life for ourselves. While I understand what you mean about some young women continuing to go from boyfriend to boyfriend and making babies, and refusing to take birth control, I do not appreciate being thrown into the "irresponsible young mother" category.
My husband's cousin recently gave birth to her 5th child. It is financially impossible for her to take care of them all without the help of food stamps and medicaid. Yet she claims she doesn't believe in birth control. I am certain she will eventually lose her children, as she has already had child services called on her twice. But to put me into the same group with her, just because we both had children early in life is ridiculous.
As always, the children will have to pay for the selfish idiocy of their parents. These two little boys are now completely alone in the world because this foolish woman deluded herself into thinking that she could be a mother at an extemely advanced age.
Folks, there is a reason why our fertility rates drop dramatically (and end at some point) as we age - the sad fact is that the older we get, the more likely even the healthiest of us develop illnesses that may preclude us for caring for children into adulthood. Our hearts give out, we develop cancers and other possibly terminal illnesses. The reality is that most of us won't live to see 80, let alone the 101 this woman thought she might live to. I think that it's lousy when eldery men (who can father children at an older age) sometimes have kids with much younger women and will never live long enough to see their children grown. But at least then the child has one parent who will be there for them.
I have no sympathy for this idiot woman who thought only of herself and not the fate of her babies. I can only hope that there is someone caring who will step up and raise these children like their own.
I don't get this fascination for kids. We have no shortage of human beings on this planet, in fact our population has overcome the entire population of rats on this planet. I probably can't pregnant and that's great. I don't need to be ruining my life, the kid's life, and that of the taxpayers because of some biological clock. I do believe that sterilizing people should be manditory until the human population is at least halved.
Further proof that many people never bother to think and are purely selfish, and that businesses (including fertility clinics) are only in it for the money.
Exactly. Is anyone really surprised by this. Basically confirms and validates the objections that alot of people had with this whole thing to begin with. Sad for the little ones....
Agree! This clinic should bear some of the responsibility as well. Sure they have an age-limit "policy"; but it doesn't work if NO ONE CHECKS!!!! The clinic is only here to collect on idiotic women's money! They should fork over some of those Euros' for the kids that THEY brought into this world as well.
One would think that the clinic's policy would be to get copies of the woman's medical records before this procedure is done. There could be a lot of reasons other than age why a woman should not have a child. Had they got her records, her real age would have been quite apparent.
Shame on the clinic for their incompetence and shame on the woman for her complete selfishness.
To base her decision on a mother who lived to 101 is ludicrous. My husband's grandfather died at 95. None of his seven children will live that long, only two made it past 80 and my father-in-law, the last living child will not make it much past his current 86 years. Had he made the decision this woman did, he'd now have two 20 yo children. He certainly would not have been able to raise children for the last 10+ years. Just being alive doesn't mean you can raise children.
Self-centered greediness leads to downfall and pain for those that are close to the individual that possesses those traits. What a shame for the little ones, but.....their lives will go on just the same, to hell w/the consequences, the woman fulfilled her desire to give birth.
I was 44 when my last child was born, my hubby was 53...She was a natural surprise and is 17 1/2 years younger then the next youngest...That said we have very specific plans for what will happen if something happens to both of us before she is grown up. The plans are by necessity both financial and family (who will raise her) as well as educational and religious.
At some point the fertility industry needs to be controlled...and IVF needs to stop being glorified. The risk of cancer increase greatly for women going through the process because of the levels of hormones that are used to create these children and the risk increases as the age of the mom increases.
My grand daughter was born through IVF.. She is a healthy wonderful,smart,girl...My daughter and son-In-law paid nearly $100,000 before my daughter became pregnant...It was worth ever penny... They are wonderful parents and provide a great life for her.... She is 4 and just came over a few hours ago so we could go berry picking behind my house...I would give up my life in a second for her....
Yes, by all means the woman should have made very specific arrangements for an unforeseen, but predictable event (death). As we all should.
However, it's her own damn business. Someone should tell this to the men who become fathers in the prime of senescence.
The wrath people have against women.
Makes me glad that I never wanted any children! I'm smart enough to make an intelligent decision, something that people don't seem to do anymore where children are concerned.
I didn't say that IVF should not exist...it should be controlled to avoid 66 yr olds having babies and situations like Octo-mom. I am glad your daughter had $100,000 extra to pay for the treatments...most people don't.
It is not "wrath people have against women" it wrath people have against an industry gone nuts for the almighty dollar, selfishness of women who think only of themselves, and doctors who think they are God. Since when are ethics and morals just "her own damn business"?
I think there's a lot of discrimination and "wrath" against women but IMO this is not really one of those cases. An elderly man who wants to become a new father has to either get a young-enough partner or would have to secure a surrogate. He can't just sneak into some clinic, no questions asked, and get pregnant.
"He can't just sneak into some clinic, no questions asked, and get pregnant."
Neither can the women who utilize fertility treatments. Despite anomalies like the "world's oldest mom" and Octomom, there are age limits and other restrictions in place at the vast majority of clinics, not to mention the extensive medical workup done as part of the treatment process. Octomom had a maverick reproductive endocrinologist who crossed many ethical boundaries, and the woman in this case lied about her age.
i'm sure there are family members to take the kids. the bigger issue should be the irresponsibility of these doctors who implanted the woman. i think ultimately they should help pay for the upbringing of these children just as a biological father would be liable. why? they performed an act that was irresponsible to say the least. 66 years old and a new mother. the only motivation for their actions would be notoriety of the pregnancy and financial gain. there was absolutely no medical precedence for helping to create life in a mother who statistics overwhelming show this woman's life expectancy is short due to age.
in other words you do the crime you do the time. the tine in this case should be monetary.
friend of mine has a much older mom.Mom was 54 when she was conceived. She would always joke about being 'young at heart' the dad died from a heart attack. The young at heart mom suffered early onset of dementia, and hardly remembered her late in life daughter. When the daughter graduated from HS in 2 years her mom was totaly out of it,couldn't remember a thing except she wanted her deceased husband. My friend only asks 'why she was born to begin with'.
Linda, your friends example is why there is abortion. Also, to the men, if you have had enough kids get a vasectomy!!!! The sex is better, there are no surprises and anxiety.
Linda: I am very sorry for your friend. I had a mircle baby 20 years after the doctors told me I would never have any children. She is truely a blessing and I spend every moment I can with her. Just be there for your friend, I wish I could hug her. I am much younger than your friends mom. I wish I could think of something profound and wise to say, but I hope she has other family to help her. I hope she is ok. and pray for her.
Mrussell24, wow are you mean....maybe your the reason for abortion or vasectomy....That statement you made works both ways.
I was a change of life "surprise" baby, my mom was 49, not really sure exactly how old my dad was....he died...young for the time, I guess....when I was 5, so no dad for me...boo hoo, really sucked, and although my mom lived until 80, and quite healthy for most of those years, in my late 20's I was part of a care-taking team, and had to help her dress, change her diaper, all while doing the same to take care of my own babies....
after she died from an autoimmune disease similar to Lou Gerig's, I had nightmares she was alive again and I had to take care of her again, I loved her, but it was exhausting....so hard....for all care givers in such situations, really.......
....and to be 30 with small children it would have been wonderful for all of us to still have her.....my kids could have had grandparents who would cherish them, I wish I could call my mom for some great advice when things get rough.....
It is what it is, and yes young parents die to, but to have both of your parents gone before 30 stinks, and even though you are and adult, you still feel a little lost, like an orphan.
mrussel24, my mom got pregnant with me at an older age, while on the pill. I for one am glad she did not have an abortion! She did however make as many plans as possible in case something happened to her before I was grown.
Charge the clinic whatever the kids need to be taken care of until they are 18 years old. Monitor the clinic for any other violations until that day and then put them out of business and take the licenses away from the doctors who performed this atrocious act. The mother was obviously insane and the kids are better off without her. Fertility clinics don't make sense - if you are not physically able to have children - adopt them. The idea that passing on your gene's is the most important part (why else would someone not take a child that needs a family) of being invetroed strikes me of vanity and stupidity. There are too many people in the world right now anyway.
Nothing wrong with adoption if it is done within an ethical and legal framework, but it is not always as straightforward as the general public likes to believe. For some couples, fertility treatments may be easier, cheaper, faster, and involve fewer concerns that conflict with their personal value systems. Both options should be respected and available.
These people will have help... Have you ever heard the term "Nanny?" They don't think they are young enough to rear 3 children...You must be on another planet... They are not poor people. Those children will be just fine... I guess you reared perfect children...
Great...I want kids at age 66! Yet another brilliant idea down the tubes! Did someone think to mention that it was not a good idea?? Is the word "no" no longer in our lexicon? Does anyone have any sense of right and wrong anymore??? She just had to have kids at 66 because her mother lived to 101, so obviously that was a guarantee that she would too!!!! But she didn't get that book or movie deal and now her two kids are parentless, devestated at the loss of their mother, and who will now have the financial responsibility to raise them...yes, the same state that is broke and on the verge of bankruptcy...Cali-fornia! This society is heading down the tubes into oblivion so quickly one can almost feel the vacuum it is creating as it heads towards its demise!
I agree with almost everything you said. Except that this woman was in Spain, not California. And despite people like this lady and Octomom, I still think theres hope for humanity. Not quite ready to give in to the vacuum yet.
If you read the article, it makes it quite clear that she was living in Spain at the time of her death. It's possible that she was not able to have IVF done in Spain - with it being a predominantly Catholic country, it may be illegal or hard to obtain there.
The selfishness of some just amazes me. That she lied to get in vitro, so she could have kids, proves what a selfish pig she was. If she really wanted kids, she should have adopted. Couldn't get one through the system you say? Mmmmm. Perhaps there is a reason for that.
Pure selfishness! She ranks right up there with Octomom, in a different age category of course. Lying about invitro..........hmmmmm sounds familiar. And now her children have lost their mother. It's a horrible situation. Children are resilliant, so they should bounce back, and (here's being optimistic of course) maybe a much younger family will take them in, giving them a more stable homelife. How stable could she possibly keep up with the 3 yr olds in the first place in her condition, with the tumor?
But come on...66 years old? What age did she tell the fertility clinic? They can't tell by her ovaries that she may be a little older than 40? My wife and I are going through this process now and we're in our mid 30's....and at times we feel we may be being selfish, but obviously the fertility clinic is at fault too. Why would a US fertility clinic service a person from Spain who more than likely produced no proof who she was? Oh I forgot...the almighty dollar....
One selfish woman who will not be around to watch her twins suffer without a Mom. It is tough enough to be raised by just one parent, now they are orphans. Being a responsible parent is also planning your child's future, both emotionally and financially. Also, an example of science gone wild. Next will be a 75 year old woman wanting to have kids.
okay, I've read all your remarks, at least all I could stand, but I will have my say.
To captain marvelous, I'm glad I'm not your mother.
To LKessler, "retirement age not a time to be a mother" you are unaware of how many grandparent who were ready to retire and have some private time after raising their children......how many are raising their grandchildren because their young children were deemed unfit parents or the kids just dropped off the kids one day and never came back........watch the news when their is a story on neighborhood tragedy, who's out there talking to the news, grandparents raising another family
To Tywh63...with your (-) spay and neuter and your other (-) about the college degree requirement for not neutering.......I am a 63yr senior who retired once,,,but life has too much left for me to do..so I a college student..so I can help troubled youth...hopefully I'll never see you or have to help you...I would though
To just my opinion..that she did this for the money$$$. Is that what you would do it for.
My thoughts-this woman spent her whole life caring for her mother....I did not see anywhere where it talked of the son's caring for the mother though...I don't care what this woman did...while she was having babies I had to justify---how dare I take up a spot at a very prestige school--I was supposed to just go off somewhere and (-). My inspiration was a woman in school in my much earlier days of college, about 1970, who was a classmate of mine, and we asked her why?? "of course to better help others"
stop being so nasty,,That could have been your mother. Remember, we as children do not get to choose our parents.!!
I know, stop using bold, but what would you have done if you just spent time listening to most people making such rotten statements when they know nothing about the woman other than what the ""news"" has said....Think, Think
This is like humanbeings, are ,someone thinking and acting in a bizzare way at any stage of life. Thus the time-old myths are shattered. In 20th century ,hardly anybody would imagine a lady over 60 giving birth to new babies or even ever desiring to do so. Now we have a lady 66 yrs ,all the way from Spain, given birth to twins at the cost of her house, wished and hoped to live like her mother over 100 but died at 69 when babies were just 3 years old and her brother has contrived to cater for their future by selling her story to some media giant.
forget a higher power, its your aging body's way of screaming it from the hilltops. while its not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination, a little humor goes a long way to get through less than pleasant times, at least in my opinion. my aunts "own private summer" is her phrase for hot flashes.
What about the FREEDOM you all are pricing in this country? FREEDOM, but not for gays, not for women, not for un-faithful, not for retired woman. Instead, FREEDOM to carry a gun in restaurants, to leave your fortune to dogs and cats, freedom to president to break the Constitution.
Does that Freedom include the freedom to burden society with having to raise two kids for the next 15 years just because some goofy woman wanted to get her name in the Guinness Book of Records??? Well, along with the freedoms guaranteed by our glorious Constitution comes a responsibility to act and behave in a responsible manner as an American and as a basic human being. That's why you can't yell fire in a crowded theater and claim it's your right to free speech! Your idea of Freedom is that it's some absolute right to do anything you want at any time without regards to the implication of what you do...sounds to me that you are a civil libertarian and as such anything goes. I guess that's why Your Guy didn't become president...
What in hell are you ranting about? Gays have the same rights as anyone else. Ok, well maybe marriage for gays is only allowed in some states.
Right to carry a gun? Well, if we look at a gun as a form of life insurance, given the number of baddies out there. . . what's wrong with that?
Freedom but not for women? Not for "unfaithful?" You might care to elaborate on those two points. I am unaware of any "freedom" women can claim to be lacking. Unfaithful? When was the last time we still stoned adulterers in the village square?
As to your claim of leaving one's 'fortune' to one's beloved pets? It's that person's money. his or her right to decide who gets it upon that person's death. If cats or dogs gave a person love and companionship for years, why shouldn't a caring person want to provide for his four-legged children? I can think of human parasites that did far less for generous people, and never stop holding their hands out, demanding, clamoring for still MORE!
Well, I guess that if that woman would have left a pile of money nobody would react. Seams more acceptable to most to have a woman forced to let the embryo come to light and then to "society", than to have "society" taking care of 2 kids that came out of desire and love for them. Not that is anything wrong with that! Also, I didn't have a "guy" but an judgment of the options, and my selection is President.
So that Spaniard's act to having a child is stupidity to lead to "tragedy", where one's act of improperly invading a country leading to a real tragedy in so many American families is wise? Maybe instituting a "petition to having a child for poeple over 60" will do it.
This is why older women should not do this. At best they can expect to be wheeled into their child's graduation and, at worst, we have this. These kids now have no mother.
There is a reason why all women sooner or later cant have kids naturally anymore...nobody likes getting older ... but thats the way it goes...just today my 90 yrs old father i am visiting thinks i will let him drive on the hiway for 60 miles into a major city and let him drive home even after he has eye surgery .. poor kids here, i hope she made some arrangements for them, we all think were not going to die anytime soon ... seems we think that up to the day we die
I agree. My mother is 60 and I can see her driving abilities deteriorating already. She gets irritated by very small things. But she won't admit these things are happening because of her age. I myself decided to have my children early. I know I could die at a young age, but let's face it, the older you get, the closer you get to dying. I have already decided I will not have any more children once I am 30. As it is now, I will only be 42 when my youngest child turns 18. Some say young people should not have children. I say it is just as disastrous to have children when you're too old.
There are crazy people everywhere. In this case, there was a crazy person in Spain. How about the poor kid, no parents.
Another publicity stunt gone wrong.
What did they think would happen
how sad. does anyone (potential moms, clinics, etc) ever consider the babies??? chances are her brother is too old to care for them as well. the toddlers will be devastated with this loss! mommy was retired so a full-time mom...toddlers seldom like to be away from mommy even to go to day care or pre school. how sad...this made me cry! i pray someone gives the babies the love and comfort they will need. they must be scared knowing mommy is in heaven. kids need tow parents anyway! they just do. i don't give a damn if it's one mom and one dad or two the same sex they just need two! if for no other reason as a "back-up" plan should something happen. yes, i know a set of parents could go out for a night in the town and be in an accident or held up and shot, etc. but cut the odds anyway you can if only for the children!
that's what happens when you mess with natural Mother Nature..come on now, this is ridiculous to think, that things can be normal for birth at 66 years of age..chalk that one up for her stupidity..I feel for her babies though, and hope they have normal lives and are healthy..another whacko octomom here...
Move the toddlers to Africa- there's a good chance that Madonna will adopt them!
This is tragic. I hope relatives end up with the kids.
Just an idea.
And I feel horrible for those babies.
...and the kids had nothing to do with it, yet, they are the ones orphaned.
What a selfish, blooming IDIOT this woman was!
Let's not lose sight of that - this woman is an IDIOT! And now 2-kids are motherless because of her poor, selfish decision.
God help us all.
there must be easier ways to get on Oprah
They had young "trophy" wives to raise the children after they died. Do the math...the twins are not yet 3.
Mia:
Um...that means they are still 2. Did you read the article?
Excuse me! Don't put this irresponsibly breeding idiot on the same level of a person who serves our country. There is NO comparison.
Guess what? You're wrong.
This women based her longevity on her mom's long life. She was selfish and an idiot.
I can't wait for the first 80 year old to have a child.
Did it? Did what? People have kids all the time, raising them (well) is the hard part.
You are correct--not one single life comes with a guarantee of longevity. Statistically there are some trends, but that's it.
You people need to lighten up. It's her own damn business.
Nicely stated Stacy. There is a plan, albeit not our own, that is perfect for our lives.
Stacy-
If a woman (or couple) can't afford birth control, she/they can't afford to have children, either.
A good example of what happens when people become parents at that age. It's totally selfish. No thought for the children.
I guess she miscalculated? Oops!
I do not think that Octo-moms "doctor" knew or knows what ethics are...neither does the "doctor" that impregnated a 66 yr old
Nice. Chalk another one up for the "me" generation.
"Damned the consequences just give me what I want."
"Oh, and don't expect anything in return."
I think she must the first person of the "me" generation
This lady was too old to be considered a baby boomer, so leave her out, please.
i'm sure there are family members to take the kids. the bigger issue should be the irresponsibility of these doctors who implanted the woman. i think ultimately they should help pay for the upbringing of these children just as a biological father would be liable. why? they performed an act that was irresponsible to say the least.
In an article about in vitro fertilization I thought it classic that the author would actually use the expression "she hatched her plan". Priceless!
LOL. I thought that was interesting wording when I read it but didn't catch the connotation. Didn't have my coffee this morning. Good eyes, Leo!
There are too many people in the world right now anyway.
geez, how many kids did you adopt? Huh?
Guess your advice is for other "infertile people". those that can conceive naturally can have as many kids as they want?
Nothing wrong with adoption if it is done within an ethical and legal framework, but it is not always as straightforward as the general public likes to believe. For some couples, fertility treatments may be easier, cheaper, faster, and involve fewer concerns that conflict with their personal value systems. Both options should be respected and available.

Look at the bright side, Joe and Katherine Jackson think they are young enough to raise Michael Jackson's kids.....
These folks just don't have a clue what is necessary in child rearing.....quality time spent!!
When you have children, it is no longer about you, they should always come first......
She is from Spain. The vitro fertilization was done in LA. Just to set the record straight. :)
Or what about foster care, then she wouldn't have to put out so much money. Just have to give some time and love.
"She" can't put out anything any more, she's dead, it's just not her problem!!!
At least octomom is still alive...
Well, she had a few good months with them. (Insert ironic laugh)
Look unless you have lived with menopause please don't comment about it. It is not a joke nor is it funny to anyone.
Menopause is God's way of saying you don't get to have any (or more) kids.
forget a higher power, its your aging body's way of screaming it from the hilltops. while its not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination, a little humor goes a long way to get through less than pleasant times, at least in my opinion. my aunts "own private summer" is her phrase for hot flashes.
crazy.Poor kids
What about the FREEDOM you all are pricing in this country? FREEDOM, but not for gays, not for women, not for un-faithful, not for retired woman. Instead, FREEDOM to carry a gun in restaurants, to leave your fortune to dogs and cats, freedom to president to break the Constitution.
How do you call this FREEDOM?
This is a question of stupidity, not freedom. Freedom is what led to this tragedy.
"Seeking Only Truth" . . . :)
