Everybody in the pool: Mandating insurance

As health care reform gains steam in the United States, it's clear that a key part of any change will be to require nearly everyone in the country to have health insurance. Whether it's provided by employers or the government, or purchased privately, so-called insurance "mandates" will affect most families in America.

Did anyone else think this was a little creepy? And by the way. . .the opening line "as healthcare reform gains steam in the United States." Do these people belong to the same planet as I do???? This debaucle of legislation is not gaining steam but the air is being let out. . .that is why they have to rush everything and not let anyone read the bill!!!! Does the media believe we are total idiots??? I long for the day when the media was government watchdogs instead they are sipping from the progressive kool-aid.

Amen, Chuck!

Q: When can a FREE country make it "mandatory" for someone to pay for health insurance you NEVER voted on?

A: They can't! It must be a Socialist/Fascist/Communist Nation in order for that to be true.

Hey! I'll pay for it in wooden nickles. That ought to be fair, right? Useless money for useless care!

the same approach was used in the mandatory mandate for purchasing auto insurance.when i resided in new jersey from 86 to 97 they created the "joint underwriting pool" which was a surcharge on law abiding citizens who played by the rules and carried insurance.

the purpose of assesing a surcharge on all policies written was to pay for the monetary damages inflicted by those who chose to operate a vehicle without insurance.this was a much smaller portion of one's assets so if the same basic form of human nature unfolds then the results should be quite disastrous.

all those pesky unintended consequences keep rearing their ugly little heads........look how well the dispersal of the h1n1 virus is going.and the thought of these self-loving idiots taking over the health care industry just curls my toes.....

yea thats how i feel Richie

I or my family and friends should not be FORCED to by a service from others like health insurance. that car insurance analogy is nonsense even that makes it hard for many to drive and if you have no car you don't need too. I would be eligible for free health care should they pass this but i feel and know with all my heart it wrong to force citizens to do it. there are better ways and if its good folks will be begging to get in .

If you all allow a Government to Dictate to you without you putting them in check they will rule all aspects of your life.

when it was income tax they only did it for the war effort and said it would be stopped, But never did now you have NO right to your paychecks without the government 1st taking what they feel you "owe" them. that goes for gifts interest earned money you are trying to save so as it grows they chop it down with taxes.

Here's the problem with not wanting to pay for "crap" you don't need: someday you will need it and then who will pay your bills? You? Not likely. People that actually use the health care system a lot will never be able to actually pay for their own care. So why should people be able to get insurance only when they need it? Can anyone imagine people opting out of social security and then whining to get back in when they get old and need it? I don't necessarily think the govt should be in the business of health care, considering what a bang up job (sarcasm) it does with medicare but I actually don't have a problem with some type of mandated insurance, depending on the details, which I guess is always where the Devil is..... Somebody's got to pay the bills, whether it's govt or insurance and everybody benefits from "socialism" whether it's your grandma that's on medicare

You can't live on social security anyway. I hope your planning for your retirement. S.S. will probably be broke when I retire, so my money is wasted. I want it back!! I can manage my money and my retirement better than the government can. I can manage my health and health care better than government can. MANDATORY health insurance - without a choice in the matter - is intolerable and unacceptable. I do not intend to play - but it remains to be seen if I can avoid it.

Comparison to mandatory auto insurance isn't a good fit: you can own a car without insurance, you can choose not to use public roads - but drive your car on public roads and you must have it. The mandatory requirement still chafes - I believe insurance is a good idea, but being mandatory is not necessarily a good law - but there are choices that include not getting insurance.

        This measure goes too far.

On top of that, there are no guarantees that employer subsidies (whole, or in part) will be continued. The incentives are more conducive (cost effective) to dropping the benefit. Along that same line, the incentive is also in favor of government; they get steady revenue from the "penalty tax", PLUS the increased burden on the People will have a large portion clamoring for relief, aka public option. The next inevitable step, when costs and accountability suffer (regardless of reason) will be to institute a single-payer system.

There is also no guarantee of 100% coverage (80% of reasonable and customary, anyone?), nor that your "necessary" treatment will be covered, or your "new" prescription is covered 100%. Co-pays are not eliminated.

In fact, you will get basic coverage at a higher price, with the option of purchasing greater coverage. Some folk will need to do just that, to get close to what they are getting now.

Passage of this healthcare/insurance "reform" puts us squarely on this path - and at no point does it show solid savings. Nor does it show better coverage. Nor improved efficiencies.

It shows - in effect - nothing significantly different than now, save the redistribution of monies so as to include "everyone" - whether they want it, or not.

If the People allow the government to mandate to individuals in this fashion, they had better get used to doing as they are told.

This is the path that passage will set for us. It will be much easier to avoid this path altogether, than attemt to change farther along.

Can somebody pinch me because I must be dreaming.

My Congressman thinks this is A OK and refused to answer my question as to why Congress wants this - in a telephone town hall. My Congressman said - hey - you have to buy car insurance.

I am NOT a car. I DO NOT want to be forced to acquire health insurance. I get it from my job now and if I need a new job, I don't want the expense of health insurance to tie me down, especially since I take care of my health UNLIKE most Americans.

All right all you Chicken Littles, calm down and smooth your feathers. The sky is not falling anytime soon.

The system can only work if everyone is signed up. What if you find yourself seriously ill, or in need of an operation? Is it fair that you can sign up the day before a doctor's visit to take advantage of the coverage, then drop it when you're cured?

              I don't think so.

Try to get private insurance to agree to something like that. Good luck.

There could be a proviso for those who are seriously against signing up for insurance that they are left to their own devices should they require medical care. Do you feel confident enough about your health to risk everything you own on that? Think about it.

Liz, I won't pay in even if you do mandate it. I value my spare time just about as much as I value money, so if it is mandated, I will just cut my work time down to the level where the government (you guys) pays instead of me. I will spend my freed up time doing art (painting) and fishing, and you guys will go to work to pay my medical. I will never pay for this and I cannot be forced to. I think it is time for many of us to take nice long vacations (without retraining other people to do our jobs) and see how the socialist economy does without us pulling our weight.

They have to choose the appropriate candidates in order to sufficiently write the proper fluff piece. It's important in today's world of journalism to make sure you highlight all of the good parts of any legislation coming out of this administration and disregard anything that be viewed as undesirable. If there is nothing good, feel free to make something up. MSNBC has a penchant or a knack if you will, for living up to the modern definition of journalism. If I know MSNBC, they'll be able to conclude definitively that this stipulation won't even affect 105% of the population.

It will be the death of liberty. If Congress can mandate that you buy health insurance -- that is, force you to contract with another private party upon penalty of stiff fines for failure to comply -- simply because you have a pulse, it will mean Congress can do anything, to anyone, at any time, "because it is good for you." It will mean big government has taken over. It will mean that personal freedom and individual responsibility have been supplanted by Big Brother who will take care of all your needs in exchange for unwavering fealty and obedience. Stop dreaming, stop breathing free air, and get in line with the rest of the drones.

There is no way that I will ever purchase health insurance. I've never had any for my 60 years on the planet, never needed it because I'm healthy and take care of myself and I'll never buy any. If they want to fine me, then they can, but I'll NEVER buy health insurance.

I believe that there will be a class action suit brought against the government if they try something as moronic as this.

If there's a way to reduce the cost, then that's fine for the people who want it. Personally, I wouldn't give two cents for the best coverage on earth.

So when you get cancer, or get in a car wreck that puts you in the hospital for years.... I am supposed to pay for your medical bills right? Don't say no, because that is exactly what happens. We pick up the tab. It is nice that you are healthy, but there are other things that can happen.

So basically verno, you're just wanting to make it official. I agree with pooch for the most part on this. I have health insurance and I'm glad that I have health insurance but I really don't think that the government should be forcing the people to buy anything. Also, pooch never said he/she would not pay the hospital bills.

It means a lawsuit to get the federal government out of individual rights. The constitution severely limits government powers for a reason. We fought one revolutionary war over this kind of oppression. This power grab will bring problems and conditions America has not seen to date. This must be Obama's intention, or he isn't as bright as he seems.

As a single female unemployed adult with no income at this time, (profession; business & financial analyst of 20+ years) living on my life's savings where I lost 50% of asset value, I have limited funds to last me while I seek work.

To be FORCED by law to pay for such health insurance, to which obviously I cannot afford right now would cause me to become delinquent to the United States Federal Government and would therefore make me a criminal subject to fines and imprisonment because of something that was out of my control and a result of something I do not support in the first place, (being FORCED to pay for something I can NOT afford).

To me, this is what England did to the American Colonists which resulted in the American Revolution of 1776. A revolution can be a healthy thing now and then, don't you agree?

Now if everyone would think back in History. Remember one of the most important events that took place that your teacher spent a lot of time on that helped start the American Revolution. It was the Boston Tea Party. This was caused by England wanting to raise revenue by taxing the colonists for one of their staple drinks - "Tea"

Now fast forward to this Administration. You do know they are hell bent on taxing our Carbonated Beverages to help pay for this Health Care Bill? This should be shocking and send the hair on the necks of all Americans standing on end!

Mr. Obama promised that no one in America making less than 250K per year would see one sent in increased taxes for this bill. We should all feel lucky only people making over 250K per year drink sodas!

Excuse me. A simple question: We know the price is $1 Trillion. What do we get for that. When I buy health insurance, there is a menu of coverages, co pays, and limits. With this Government Option, do I get "everything covered"? If I don't, then it's just the same old game of some not being insured.

Do I get medical, latest operation techniques, drugs coverage, eye glasses, dentist? What are we talking about? Anybody.

                                                          Well - I don't recall dental coverage

                                                          or catastrophic illness

                                                          cancer

                                                          well visits

                                                          short-term disability

or anything so specific; just that there must be "coverage" - - but we WILL be able to purchase additional coverage.

We will also get to pay the additional administrative overhead for all this: increased costs to insurance companies will add a little (while they still offer health insurance, anyway), but the numbers of new government employees required to handle regulation and compliance should be impressive - and grow even moreso over the years.

OK, let's turn it around. "They" say there will be a penalty for not getting coverage. There are so many plans - what is the minimum "they" will accept? That might give us an idea of what must be covered.

Just seems so weird everyone is so concerned about getting insurance - They don't care what insurance. Maybe I could start an insurance company charging $100 a year that covers some kinds of hangnails. Fine print applies. Would that meet a persons " social obligation" to get health insurance - and me a few bucks!

Tell me, what happens if I don't pay the fine for not having health insurance? If this happens, I'll rebel against this oppressive mandate and live what I want. This country is going down the toilet with this health care "reform". It's a sham and it will please the insurance companies and Big Pharma by putting our tax dollars in their coffers while we see higher premiums in our taxes and seeing more unemployment rising and more outsourcing of our jobs because employers of all sizes cannot afford to provide coverage to their employees. This will lead to the fall of America.

Heatlhcare premiums are 40.00 a month higher on my company plan for smokers than non-smokers. coverage is lowered if you take their healthcare surveys and pass healthy lifestyles analysis.  We already pay for the millions that don't have or can't afford  healthcare.  These things will not change.  The only difference is you'll lose your freedom to  be  able  to drop your coverage  with no penalty and  start a future  of losing more and more of those  freedoms. If this debacle passes  then the cap and trade deal will be rammed down our throats and  the proposed tax increases there on everything you use  in daily life will  make your head spin. The show must be stopped here. Congress and the gov are out of control and about to destroy the country. Write ,call, or e-mail your Congressman today and promise if this crapped isn't stopped now it will be the end of their political careers starting the next election and carry out on that threat.

A law requiring that everyone purchase health insurance would be rather difficult to enforce, especially if one does not have the money to pay the premiums. there are many in this nation who are struggling to put food on the table at home, if they still have one (a table and a home to put it in). What good will it do if one spends all that he/she has to pay health insurance premiums and as a result cannot afford food and/or a place to live. Wouldn't it be rather stupid for someone to pay their health insurance premiums and starve to death. Of course, the politicos of both parties woldn't be concerned about that since they make fat salaries and the public pays for ALL of their healthcare. When one makes $130 a week, as I and many others do, both healthcare and the insurance to cover healthcare are luxuries that one must do without. I must assume that if this requirement becomes law then I shall have to violate that law and I guess that I will end up in prison as a result. Will we get healthcare should that happen or will we have to become ill and die in prison, because we cannot afford to purchase healthcare insurance? Who knows, maybe the compassionate conservatives will decide that we do not deserve to live and just shoot us. That is what the Nazis did in Germany to those that they deemed to be subhuman trash. Enough said!!
