To John 537378 - Money doesn't matter. My Dad, age 78, went to local Kroger Pharmacy for the H1N1 vaccination since he has COPD, and Kroger pharmacist turned him away saying he was not eligible for the shot since he was over 65! He is very upset.

A big reason there is not as much vaccine as had been promised by the administration is that the administration wanted the vaccine made in single doses rather than multiple dose units. So while they are filling single vials and shipping them, in basically the same amount of time, they could have been packaging at least FIVE times as much. It isn't that they didn't have the actual vaccine, it is that they couldn't get it bottled and shipped! There was NO reason for the single dose only stipulation, not from a medical standpoint. Most vaccines are put into multi dose units and some in single dose units as well. So the rationale behind this decision is suspect at best.

Single dose units do not contain the "suspect" preservative Thimerosal. Multi dose units contain this preservative to keep it fresh after initial opening. The last shot in the unit will contain a higher concentration. You are correct in that it is offered in both sized units for those who request a single dose.

Actually in Tarrant County Texas money didn't get the H1N1 vaccine. They decided to let the county do the shots. No private doctors so there was no charge, but there was a catch to it. If your child was insured no shot. Only the illegal immigrants and deadbeat families got it. Sad state of affairs when a working parent with insurance can't protect their child. Anyone over 60 is probably immune from the H1 strain. However, those with severe health issues need to go directly to their Doctor (NOT a clinic) and get their shot - or a note telling the clinic why they must have it.

I am not a candidate for H1 but DO need the seasonal vaccine since I am a caregiver for an ill person. There is NONE around, and I am living in Rochester MN - home of the Mayo clinic !

Actually, you're wrong. It isn't available to me where I live (New Mexico) even for any money, and I'm in a priority group because I had a splenectomy (spleen removed) as a teenager. While I'm no more likely to get the flu than anyone else, the risk of a secondary infection like pneumonia is much greater for me.

Interestingly, for those bashing government-run health care, my 71 year old father in Canada has been able to get the vaccine. Yes, there have been shortages there as well, but Canada has more vaccines per capita than any country on Earth. When I live in Canada I never had trouble getting my flu shot. Only in the USA has it been a problem.

How about first fixing the production and prompt delivery of vaccines before massive exposures. The CDC and Feds fail again. Most everyone I know has already had the H1N1 flu.

Geezus people are stupid. There is no squalene used in any U.S. vaccine formulation. The nasal spray and single dose vials do not contain thimerosal, only the multi-dose vials. The nasal vaccine uses an attenuated virus that has a temperature-sensitive replication deficit. It cannot grow in a human and will not spread (it is not infectious). Rumsfeld had stock in the company that makes Tamiflu, not the H1N1 vaccine. The vaccine is not to sterilize the public (common! Are you really that stupid?) They ordered flu vaccine to be designed and manufactured FROM PRIVATE INDUSTRY. Private industry has not been able to produce at the rate at which they claimed. The request was made for single does units and that is why there is slower production. Flu vaccine is produced in multi dose units as well as single dose. when your main production is single dose units, you are not going to be able to ship nearly as many patient doses. It isn't the private industry's fault, it was another example of lousy projections by admins. (This phenomena is not unique to the current administration by any stretch of the imagination.)

Get some Mucinex. One major complicationfrom the H1N1 flu is congestion in the lungs. Your mother should, of course, have the H1N1 vaccine. She should also get a pneumovax shot(a yeary pneumonia vaccine. If you cannot get her the H1N1 vaccine, you can help her by having the Mucinex on hand...it breaks up congestion in the lungs better than any other over the counter product. Buy the one that has PE after the name for best results. Adults who have major respiratory or heart health conditions(no matter what their age)should be able to get the H1N1 vaccine. If she has a regular doctor make an appointment and get her the regular flu vaccine and the pneumovax shot. If the doctor has H1N1 get that. Failing your medical person having the vaccine try to go on the internet and type in H1N1 Vaccine Available and your zip code. There are several drug stores who are getting the vaccine in Philadelphia area and other medical service companies who will have it available. Sign your mother up for a spot and for notification. The cost is anywhere from $15.00 to $39.00. NEVER mind the idiots who think she shouldn't get the vaccine. If you have young children, she will be exposed. You probably cannot get Tamiflu or the other prescription treatments at this point. So stock a bag with the Musinex along with other cold/flu type products. If you mother is on oxygen already make sure she has a supply. If she is on a breathing medication do the same. While I am not advising you to do this; some COPD patients experience some clearing of mucous from a breathing treatment of regular Saline(the kind that comes in the little clear tubes)which is sometimes used in conjuction with other breathing treatments. The problem with most breathing treatments is that they should only be used a certain number of times per day because they increase pulse rate, etc. I have successfully used just the saline. Anyway, don't listen to these idiots who don't care about anything but telling others what they should do. Get the mucinex(just get your drug store's brand to save money)and look for the H1N1 vaccine availability online. Any adult with medical complications has the right to get the vaccine. Also any adult in a job or household with the sick or young children. Good luck. Just so you know, I am a nurse.

Hello Kitty - If your Mom is elderly or even over 60 she is most likely fine.  H1N1 doesn't seem to be infecting older folks - perhaps because we got it when we were young.  Young people seem to be the most vulnerable.

Not many or certain few of the older persons gets the swine flu shot.

That was a very cruel thing to say about the lady that has the health problems. She does have one form of protection that I am sure you are upset about she took the pneumonia shot. That will help prevent some complication of the H1N1.

Let's hope you never have poor health, someone may wish harm on you and not want you to get medical treatment.

Just be ready. When government health care passes (if it does) the government will decide your mother's worth to society and determine what medications and care she gets by that. Nice thought isn't it?

Pneumovax is not an annual vaccine. It is given once age 65 and up. If a patient had it before age 65 for whatever reason, a booster is given in 5 years. Your medical advice is very dangerous. PE is pseudoephedrine - how do you know that Hello Kitty's mother can safely take this medication? It is quite dangerous in those with hypertension, and it only relieves nasal congestion (i.e. it doesn't help the lungs). You are correct that she should try to get the pandemic H1N1 vaccine (barring allergy to eggs or other vaccine components) - while elderly tend to have some immunity, you cannot guarantee that, and mortality rate for influenza is very high in elderly with COPD. Hello Kitty's mom should get advice from her doc.

FYI, so far this flu season, the seasonal vaccine is next to worthless. While time will tell, so far over 99% of influenza strains subtyped by labs in the U.S. are the novel pandemic strain, and less than 0.1% are a seasonal H1N1 or H3N2. About 0.3% are influenza B. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/

Goldman Sachs received 200 shots out of 5400 requested. They are free to divide them among their employees or administrators as they see fit, but are encouraged to target their high-risk people first. Quit whining. Frankly, I like it when people can get the shot at work - less overtime pay for my staff. We don't get reimbursed by almost all ins companies for the administration charge, tiny reimbursement by Medicare, zero from Medicaid - office loses money overall by giving out flu shots.

Add to the list incarcerated criminals. This is a good policy to immunize them. I'd hate to be the doctor on call at a community hospital who has to hospitalized a criminal for influenza (handcuffed to the bed), taking up a bed (esp. ICU) from a regular law-abiding citizen (i.e. your loved ones). I would expect our president, staff, Congress, etc. to be vaccinated. Also, health care workers, law enforcement, military (yes, they are getting shots). Even GITMO detainees and the military personnel there should get the shot. You want them getting ill, with the ensuing international political ramifications? It's only a few hundred out of millions of shots. And Goldman Sachs only got 200 out of 5400 shots requested.

You do realize that nearly all deaths from seasonal flu occur in January and February, right? It's only November.

So, I get the flu.....so what? It's not the worst thing that could happen to me and chances are, it won't kill me. I have never had a flu shot, I've only contracted the flu twice in my lifetime. People get sick, it's a fact of life. It's actually good to be exposed to some things, it raises our immunity. If the media didn't make such a hype out of it, people wouldn't be so upset about not getting their flu shot.

It's amazing to me what lengths people will go through to get a shot that will protect them against something that won't hurt them.....then that very same person will not take other steps to keep and stay healthy through proper diet and exercise.

And by the way, the H1N1 virus was already widespread before the vaccines even became available, so just how are these people volunteering to be viral incubators?
