If the cardiologist's warnings do not scare you, consider this: Controlling blood pressure just might be the best protection yet known against dementia.

it took this long to find this correlation? why not breakthrough studies showing that running red lights causes more accidents? i wonder if natural normal blood pressure works better than the drug induced variety.
I am in my mid thirties...I used to have 150-105 average blood pressure, not terrible, but still too high ( stage 1 hypertension). I weighed 192 lbs on a 5'9" frame. SO... I quit drinking alcohol altogether, I quit smoking marijuana, I quit drinking soda completely, I quit meat (red or white) altogether and cut way back on salt and sugar... I ALSO started exercising nearly daily. As a result I lost over 30 lbs and I now weigh below 160 lbs. My blood pressure dropped to BELOW 120-80 at all times (I was able to stop my 2 medications) and stayed that way for the last two years. Now my blood pressure is up where it used to be again (@#%&*%##) and it is very stressful to me considering the HUGE lifestyle changes I have made...
Does anyone have any helpful input?

Yes, stop watching the mainstream media.
You have not mentioned caffeine intake, coke, coffee, mate tea, guarana etc. = big no nos. I only drink coffee for breakfast nowadays. I think that is important, but it will probably take a while to produce an effect. Drink green tea and plenty of filtered water and see what happens. I also believe that eating potatoes, not fries, without or very little salt reduces blood pressure, but that may just be me.

Sounds like you've done everything you can but you still need the meds. If the meds you are using don't lower the pressure enough, try others.
A few years back, a 48 year old friend of mine had hypertension and ignored it. He was in great physical condition but dropped dead one day after work on the basketball court. Didn't have to happen.

Ally - I don't have any caffeine either...
As far as the meds go... I hate their side effects, I am in top physical shape, taking the meds slows me down and I feel tired and can do only 20% of what I normally do. There is also sexual side effects, E.D. that is. They also give me indigestion and nausea. Lipitor and Lotrel do...
? ? ?
This is not exactly a high traffic vine, not like gay marriage or abortion... I would really appreciate more input though...
Wow, the traffic on this sight is dizzying!
One comment every 6 hours!
If this was about "Gay" anything... then we would have 600 comments an hour and we'd be on page 16!
Don't any "Gays" have hypertension?
High blood pressure runs in my family, so i've been taking meds for the last 15 years to keep it normal. I try and do a lot of quite meditation to drop it even lower if possible. Mother has full blown Alzheimers and don't have a clue who anybody is and i'm not to excited to be following in her footsteps. And i watch my diet like a hawk, i plan on doing everything right to keep those brain cells working properly.
....well maybe if my frikkin' medical bills weren't so high my blood pressure wouldn't spike too...and...and....
.....now what was I saying? <wink>

Fergit it. I forgot what I was going to say.
this is no big discovery. this has been suspected for years.they write like it's the first time they are hearing about it.my grandmother had high blood pressure years ago, and was told by a doctor then that it could lead to dementia. they didn't use the word alzheimers way back then.the only thing new is they can see images of it now.nothing new!
The cardiologists are so afraid of being sued that they were willing to prescribe beta blockers to patients who need something else to provide relief from anxiety disorder. The Anxiety Disorder is in itself alone
, a cause of high blood pressure.
Reading some of this research gives me high blood pressure. I've read so much about this and every now and then another study comes up in a variance of the other. Are they truly doing more research or was this a doctor trying to get published in a hurry?
Forgot to say that living and/or working in an environment of air pollution from diesel and other vehicles is known to raise blood pressure.

What were we talking about?? Just, kidding!
I had really high blood pressure for two years; new Doc. comes to town; one visit - no more HBP. Don't want to be advertising; new med. sounds like Klon-a-deen (ntm) - It does interact with a couple of meds. so ask your doctor or pharmacist. Or does i spel that Farm-assist? (not going to use the spellchecker on this one).
Hope, this was helpful?
P.S. Ally clicked on your invitation pending; got an oops!, like a dozen times??
Now we know what is wrong with Cheney and the other Neocons.

Well, DUH!! My blood pressure is currently 210/120 and because of the fact that I'm laid off work and have no insurance I no longer have access to my b.p. meds. I just turned 49 years old and can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday! I'm hoping a year from now, if I'm still alive, that I'll remember the name of my only Grandson who's just about to turn 7 months old! My b.p. is high because of my family history, not because I'm grossly obese and not taking care of myself. I'm a lady who's 5'5" and weighs 140 lbs.-yes, a bit chubby, but not nasty-fat. Isn't life great??
Diane - Your excuses are a cop out. It doesn't matter if your bp is family history or not, it is way too high. Your "laid off, no insurance" doesn't fly either. I can buy a 90 day supply of bp medicine at Costco for about $10. (You don't have to be a Costco member to use their pharmacy.)
If you think you are down and out now, wait until you have a heart attack or stroke and see how bleak things look.

Many stores such as Walmart and around the Pittsburgh area, Giant Eagle, have lists of commonly prescribed drugs for $4.00. At Giant Eagle, most antibiotics are free. If not, contact the manufacturer of your particular drug, and in many cases you will be provided with the drug for free, or at greatly reduced cost.Call your doctors office, they can give you leads and phone numbers. Just call them, there is help out there.
Also, you sound very angry, that alone can raise BP. Good luck.
....of course...my grandmother had dementia.....and never had high blood-pressure
....and my grandfather's high-blood-pressure was off the charts....and he was completely lucid until his death.
.....so....until the medical community can come out...and say...THIS....causes dementia....and THIS is the cure / preventative.....then anything they say can be taken with a huge grain of salt (preferably on watermelon or Granny Smith Apples)

Opus, I have faithfully taken my drugs for high blood pressure. With that said I feel that there is a bit of grasping at straws to find causes for many conditions afflicting the elderly. I also believe that many are done by conjuncture and not with any long term studies done over a long period of time. We've always had dementia and it can come from many causes. I know one person in particular who checked out early as she never had a thought or a word of her own and was controlled by her intense and abusive husband for years. In her dementia she was very happy and joyful. I felt the escape was a good one for her.
I'm sorry...this may not be a brand new discovery but it IS news that should be spread high and wide. My husband and I, in our late 50's, both have been taking blood pressure medication for many years...in a laxadaisical fashion. Knowing better, as far as heart attacks and strokes go, we weren't worried if we missed a day or two here and there. Then my mother was diagnosed with dementia...her behavior having become very erratic, moody, paranoic, confused and violent at times. A timely car accident caused us to have a CAT scan done of her brain and what a shock! The report stated clearly that intensive brain damage had been caused directly from hypertension. My husband and I, being very intensive readers, HAD NEVER HEARD of this connection nor had we EVER BEEN TOLD by any of our doctors treating our hypertension that dementia was in any way connected. My husband and I now take our medications religiously...because the pain my mother's dementia has caused our family is not something I would knowingly inflict on my children. Spread the word...blood pressure now has another glaring reason for being watched closely...EVERY SINGLE PERSON I have spoken with in the last six months has someone in their family who is fighting the horror of dementia and now we are told the majority of cases might have been prevented. It is clear to us now where these multitude of dementia cases are stemming from...because high blood pressure has been slapped in our faces for generations now. Shame on the medical profession for not spreading the word sooner about this connection, because, believe me, dementia is more devastating than a heart attack or stroke BECAUSE THERE IS NO RETURN. God bless us all!
All we have is our health, if that changes our life changes. There is no warning, but there are clues, that is what tests are for. See dementia/Alzheimer's possible warning signs.
Yea, everytime Obama pisses me off my blood pressure goes thru the roof and later dementia kicks in and I cant remember why I was mad in the first place, then it starts all over the next day.
Oh so this is why i keep forgetting to take my bp medication and..... What was i saying?
