Is the difference really sex education in schools which was non-existent in 1960, but widespread in 1991? Or is it something else such as the lack of consequences and permissive societal attitudes towards illegitimate birth? When celebrities, sports figures and even politicians have out-of-wedlock children with impunity, why would teens give it a second thought? Especially when they know government assistance will relieve them of the bother of paying for the child.

Acceptance of teens being moms is much of it. Its grandparents raising so many of these children while the kids go off on their own population explosion. It all comes down to there not being a cost to the wrong behavior on the part of these children. Make these parents work if they are going to take government assistance. While they may have the right to make their own choices, they do not have the right to make me choose to raise and support their children and that is exactly what they are doing! Support your children or take them away. if they keep choosing to have children adn burden the rest of us with their choice, have society as a whole take that choice away from them. I can't tell you how tired I am of going to the grocery store at the beginning of the month and have a 20ish lady in front of me with 2-3 children hanging on her and pregnant again with a basket or two full of groceries and paying $5 for it all and the government, as in you and I, buying the rest.

If you are going to have sex then be careful or accept the consequences don't romanticize them. Don't make the rest of us pay for your choices. For the most part these kids know what they are doing and what will happen if they do.

Sometimes "the piece of trash" father (we really should not compliment them buy calling them a father) shows up and looks for his share of the money at the beginning of the month. It is less prevalent since the Republicans and President Clinton instituted welfare reform, but it will be coming back now that we have the LP's back in control.

In the 50's and 60's if you were pregnant you left school before you were noticably pregnant. In the 70's they moved you to special schools with other pregnant girls. In the 80's we started to accept this more and let them stay mainstream, which encouraged more of the girls to do similar and then we reached the 90's. What are we doing now? Do we have nurseries in High Schools in major cities? I think we have encouraged what is happening.

I am currently a 17 year old and in school, but I would just like to comment on this issue. People are saying there is a stigma on people that have had sex, well that from my observations is not the case. In fact, if you have not had sex, in the public school system you are probably going to get paid out. The lifestyles people adopt now are calling for teenagers to have sex, don't worry about responsibility and self control because either your parents, grandparents or your government will help you. Forget sex education, all that does is allow the kids to make fun of the word "boobies" or "penis" and give the teacher a hell of a time.

Blaming abstinence only or birth control only teaching methods etc is a waste of time as neither make a difference for the majority. Teens aren't having sex to have children most of the time, they are just careless with it and don't bother with birth control. If it is not on them at the time they will do it anyway and just hope all is well.

It is the lifestyle that we grow up with. We live in an over-sexualised society, that is for sure. As teenagers, we can't handle problematic situations involving emotions in an optimum manner. Many of my friends, they will go to under -18 parties, take pills, hook up with strangers, then finish the night off with sex with a stranger. I know a two people who did it when they were 12! I mean it is disgusting what a society we are now. I don't put all the blame on my generation as we grow up spoon fed with pornography and expectations to dress like hookers.

I see it in my other friends, extremely modest girls who won't give underage sex a thought, dress in clothes that send the message "we are available".

It has nothing to do with all this Liberal/Republican BS. It just comes down to the lifestyle and environment we grow up with.

Society is raising the bar with what is acceptable. It is too late now, money practically controls the world and if anything is absolute it is that sex sells.

The problem lies in our attitude of raising children instead of adults. Adults make responsible decisions based on the desires and consequences. Children do not consider consequences. Age does not play much of a role in the difference between adult and child, on an emotional or mental maturity level. I have met many 30 year old children and many 15 year olds that are more mature than the 30 year olds.

Sex education, both at school and at home, has more to do with teaching responsibility earns privilege not age. It means teaching there are consequence to all decisions, some of those consequences are positive some are negative. Maturity is deciding which consequences you are willing to live with as PART of the decision making process, not after.

It really has little to do with actual "sex education" at school or at home. It has to do with wanting your children to grow up to be adults that can make good decisions on their own.

If you want to talk about society, its safe to say that in itself, its at the lowest its ever been at, morally speaking for America in general. I struggled with the issue of pre-marital sex as a teen, I still struggle with abortion, and same-sex relationships. Tolerance is acceptance no matter if I say I am against abortion or homosexuality. If as you claim morality is steadily declining, is that a reflection of living in a country where people are free to express themselves and fight for their individual rights and self interest in the pursuit of happiness?

Have we become so self-indulgent seeking our individual pleasure that we have forgot that pleasure might not equate to happiness? And that the relentless gratification of pleasure blinds us of greater needs surrounding us?

How should we pursue a moral compass that is acceptable across all cultures, races, and religions, sexual preferences and reverse the moral decline you describe.

I think we share the same frustration. And while I espouse a philosophy of believe and let believe, think and let think; the reality of that tolerant thought process does not make a firm stand on some moral issues facing our society.

Are you implying that those that don't share your religious beliefs are less capable or prone to moral behavior? As an atheist I have to take exception to this. It is 5 times a day and I do not respect a commitment to anything that promotes the random killing of men, women, and children. I think this is the epitome of immorality and is graphic proof that morality and religion do not have any relation to one another. Another example are people like Pat Robertson with his assessment of the aftermath of Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. He has to be among the most immoral people on earth, right up there with Stalin.

Tim S 56036 Thank you for pointing out my errors. I think your corrections underscore the difficulty to establish common morals shared by faith and non-faith. As long as we preserve individual rights, your and my moral values may and probably will differ to a degree.

Also while I do know about the unfair treatment of women, and capital punishment in Muslim societies, I purposely deleted that from my initial comment. I just wanted to suggest that I envy their commitment to prayer. It is one of the few faith based cultures that support the prayer practice.

And for the record - while I declare I am a Christian - I have a lot of work to do to truely practice Christianity. I have known people of no faith with stronger a stronger moral code than I have. It had to do more with how, when, and where we were raised, but the difference were notable, and refreshing.

Thanks and I enjoyed reading and discussing the topic with you. I don't think we need to agree 100%, in fact that would be boring and stagnating to society. We should all have our differences with any important concepts. This is how we improve our practices. I want accepted morals to be a living thing, always open for debate and modification.

Part of my comment about the violence in Muslim culture had to do with suicide bombers more than penal code, though I agree with you on that. I don't necessarily agree with honoring someone based on their commitment to an idea or practice for its own sake. Many at Jonestown willingly took the KoolAid and Heavensgate followers are now dead because of their commitment to catch a ride on comet Hale-Bopp. Hitler and Po Pot had committed followers and I do not admire any of them.

I don't think it was a result of your teachers talking about sex that there was a mattress at your track. I think that has more to do with the atmosphere of the students at your school. I graduated HS in 2004 and we had the same kind of things happening at our school. And I am from a conservative suburb of Indianapolis, not a liberal place like CA. Abstinence is a valid option, but is not effective when you are "in love" and have found the one. It is childishly immature to expect abstinence to work for all children let alone the majority. Teaching responsibility and logical reasoning is the most effective way. That and keeping the lines of communication open so the teen feels comfortable seeking advice and support. Dictating behavior almost never works.

Agreed about building upon education. Adult sexual behavior and alcohol behavior are subjects that need continuous education and reinforcement when the child is developing. The emphasis for the child, both boys and girls need to understand how to deal with internal urges and the seemingly relentless pressure to experience the pleasure. We somehow build up the intensity of being an adult flonting the pleasures in front of our young while they are dealing with the changes in their physical and mental development. Yet while we flont the pleasures, we don't distinguish between pleasure and happiness. Yet there is no outlet to release those pent up changes other than heavy petting, self control, or self pleasure or teen sex. There has to be a way to have the continuing conversation to discuss choices and engage in the discussion about pleasure and happiness so that the day the barrier is lifted, and the child legally becomes an adult or married, the choice is not about the fact the new adult can have sex or drink. The choice is responsible and appropriate to the situation or relationship.

I must acknowledge R. C. Sproul in his book "Knowing Scripture" for the concept of pleasure and happiness. The direct quote from page 29 reads like this: "...the ruthless reality of the difference between happiness and pleasure. How easy it is to confues the two! The pursuit of happiness is regarded as our "unalienable right." But happiness and pleasure are not the same thing. Both of them feel good, but only one endures."

The emphasis for the child, both boys and girls need to understand how to deal with internal urges and the seemingly relentless pressure to experience the pleasure.

And how to deal with the new desires and urges for expressing strong emotions. The "problem" extends well beyond sex and pregnancy. It includes anger and joy, responsibility and privileges. The child is rapidly becoming an adult in body and privilege. Have we taught them how to be adults or are we still trying to keep them as preteens. Do we make their decisions for them and come to their rescue every time they have to face the consequences of their behavior? Or do we stand by them and guide them as they learn to deal with these consequences?

That is a great question that I have been exploring for a long time through practice and discussion. Learning from consequence is probably one of the best teachers we have. But do we need to burn a child's hand to teach them not to play with matches? I know from my experience the relationship needs to grow as the child grows - it grows from nurturing parent to teaching parent, to supporting parent, to guide, mentor, and accepting. Not sure I have that right, but far too often I don't see the relationship changing beyond nurturing and teaching parent.

I understand and respect what you say United and agree with most of it. However to say that young girls are not mentally ready to deal with sex and pregnancy is not 100% true. The recent case of Jaycee Dugard points this out. This girl was kidnapped at the age of 11, raped, abused, and bore two children with her captor over the span of 18 years. She gave birth the first time at 14 with no medical assistance of any kind and quite probably all by herself. Her second child was born when she was 18 under similar circumstances.

Her two daughters were healthy and when tested were found to be at or above their expected grade level. These are two young girls whose mother was a child and who raised them with more care, love, and responsibility than many adult mothers would today. No. You simply cannot put all young women in a box and classify them as immature and mentally unfit. Mother Nature dictates when we are physically ready to reproduce and circumstances and our own make up determines whether or not we carry out our responsibilities properly and successfully.

BS Commenter - having sex in the 50's was just as bad but the consequences were either the girl left school or had a back alley abortion. Rural or urban - it didn't matter. Another response was to send the girl away to a distant relative's home to have the baby and give the baby up for adoption. Finally teen marriages by "shotgun" at the time were well known throughout the south. Remember the term? Shotgun weddings? The fact is the problem contines through the ages.

I've noticed, too, how often babies are dressed like teenagers in jeans, t-shirts and tennis shoes when only months old, instead of onesies, jammies, etc. Then when they are teenagers, they dress like street walkers or other ladies looking for the wrong kind of attention. What's wrong with dressing babies in jammies? What's wrong with teenagers dressing in a way that keeps them from looking as though they want to get laid? Why aren't parents insisting their children dress appropriately? Why aren't parents dressing their children appropriately?

I wouldn't call myself an Obama supporter, but how can he be to blame for something that's been going on for this long? He's been president for a year. Guess what. There were pregnant teens in 2008 too. And all the years before that.

It's a cultural thing. We are either trying to stop teen sex, which a lot of cases, is going to happen regardless, or we're taking sex and glorifying it. Is it bad, or is it the best thing ever? Now, (in my twenties) I'm very glad my mom talked to me and provided me with birth control. I made it into adulthood without and STDs or babies. And, if it makes you feel better, I was a virgin when I first started taking birth control, and didn't lose my virginity for over a year after that. And I'm sure that would have happened anyway.

I think we to go back to the era where you were shunned from society if you do get pregnant.  Back then if you got pregnant, you were removed from school, sent to a home for pregnant mothers.  We glorify it.  It is a common occurrence and therefore has become acceptable therefore teenagers don't care one way or another.

Whatever happened to not dating until you are 16.  Back in the day, boys and girls were not allowed to socialize without constant adult supervision.  Even when they started dating at 16 parents required a chaperon.

Children are not mature enough to make these type of decisions so they should not even be given the option....plain and simple.

Your kids may hate you now but they will thank you when they are older.  You may even find they use the same parenting tactics.

Although I can appreciate the content of what you are trying to say, might I add that it was also during that era where women were dying, bleeding to death in 'back alleys' after botched illegal abortions because it was so socially unacceptable to be sexually active , let alone unmarried and pregnant. Sex between teens is going to occur whether it is socially acceptable or not. As parents and guardians, we need to provide support, education and the tools necessary to enable our children to make the best decisions possible.

You are an excellent parent and I plan to do the same with my daughter when the time comes. I don't believe my daughter would interpret birth control as a license to have promiscuous sex. Regardless, I would rather her have protected promiscuous sex than unprotected sex of any kind.

It is a proven scientific fact that the part of the brain that controls impulse has not yet fully developed in a teenager. If teenagers were taught where their brains are at biologically, they would at least have a good reason not to put themselves in the position of having to make the choice of having sex or not. Teenagers are intelligent enough to respect science, and smart enough to use it to "save face" and as the reason to not "go along with crowd".

KUDOS to you! You are doing exactly what every parent should be doing. You have decidied to not put your head in the sand or cover your ears where your daughter and her boyfriend are concerned. You are able to see the larger picture which is teenagers will have sex whether we want them to or not. So you provide her with an open line of information and communication and a means to control the outcome should she decide to engage in sexual activity. Even if you did not provide her with the information and support...she would as many other teens...go ahead and have sex. So why not help her make an informed decision and encourage responsibility. hmm. Providing birth control before the fact. I had been thinking of doing this for my 16 year old. I'm glad to hear from someone who has done this. A bonus is that the pill would probably clear up her acne, too.

I don't think it's an issue of condemning the child, or even the unwed mother; rather, it's the idea that a 16 year old is not emotionally or financially ready to be a parent, and they need to understand the ramifications.

Too many young girls out there are getting pregnant simply to have another human being to love and be loved by in return. Too many young girls are having sex simply to feel loved, perhaps because they're not getting that emotional need met by their parents.

We as parents need to be teaching our children to understand not only the "how", but the "why" of sex. It's one thing to tell your child that it's natural to have sex, and here's how to do it safely. It's another thing to say, "These are the consequences of sex, and I want you to make choices that are good for you in the long run, which means waiting until you're ready for those consequences".

I taught my children that ALL choices create consequences. However, some choices create consequences that last a life time. Becoming a teen parent is one of those choices. I also took the responsibility as a parent to lay down rules that would decrease the likihood of pregnancy: Look to me for birth control if you decide to become sexually active. No member of the opposite sex is allowed in the home without a parent present. A few rules that have BIG consequences if broken worked for my family. Perhaps it could work for others, too.

I LOVE this! Its so true! They need a parent, not a friend. They have plenty of friends at school, trust me. Because your really not doing your children any favors by being their friend. If they view you as a friend, you have ultimately failed at being their parent because

A: They won't view you as the respectable parent you need to be viewed as

B: They won't be as comfortable talking to you about certain subjects, certainly not about sex!

and C: After some time, if they feel that they just can't talk with you about ANYTHING, they will lose all respect for YOU period.

(Take it from someone who knew 1 too many pregnant teenagers in high school. Almost all of them dropped out stifling their chances of a good career.)

I'm in my 40's, and truly believe today's kids have it much harder than I did. I don't remember being bombarded, 24-7, on what the 'ideal' man or woman was, that if you weren't the ideal man or woman, you were a loser. Nor do I remember the amount of advertising geared towards "sex sells"; that if you drink this brand of soda, girls will fall at your feet, if you wear this particular brand of clothing, boys will swoon in your wake. Thus, the most important need for us to drill home to our kids the importance of self-respect and self-esteem. All the more reason why today's parents need to stay a step ahead of their kids, so they can give proper, informative instruction. Sadly, many parents fall into the same trap their kids do.

And, one needn't be religious to be moral - in my mind, it's just basic common sense. However, substituting religion for common sense does our kids a major disservice.

That's quite possibly the best method of birth control there is. I applaud your son's response as well.
