My daughter was hurt with a severe concussion in her 8th grade basketball game. This happened last February. She was cleared to play on her club volleyball team in the summer, she still didn't feel normal. She is a great young lady very active in sports and school, but she started making some wrong choices unlike her. We thought she needed some therapy so we got her with a neuropsychotherapist. He has done some testing and found that her brain is not functioning like it should be. She has now since been set up for physical therapy as well as, we as parents are learning how to help her get her skills back that she has lost with thinking and strategies on how to make choices. She has alot of work ahead of her! I only wish we had been told of different things to watch for. We look back now and realize that her changing has all been due to this head injury.
The schools need to get mats across the gym walls and get educated about how serious these head injuries really can be.
My grandson was hit in the back of the head with a soccer ball. It knocked him out, and I was not sure what to do I really expected the couch to check on him and I did nothing because I did't what the other kids to pick on him or call him a sissy. The couch never asked if he was alright. The next day in school the school nurse called to have him taken to the doctor he had a concusion. THere were very important things that should have been done at the time of ilmpact. The couch should have put ice on the back of his head he should have been given Motren to prevent swelling. I think that the couches need to be more aggressive when one to there team members are hit in the head. My grandson was out for about 5 seconds. no one went to his aid form the team not even the couch and not even me. That was then but it wouldn't be now.
