Hey Bill - How about spending some money right here in the good ole USA? What about our poor and our under nourished and our sick. I am sick and tired of the USA being the watchdog of the world. Who helps us when we experience a catastrophic event - NOBODY!! Lets take care of our own for once.

It's his money and he gets to spend it where he wants.

It's interesting to me that churches give to countries all over the world and noone gripes to them to "spent it here...waaaah". Yet Bill Gates does it and he's bad.

Bush sent 30 billion to Africa over a 5 year period, but that was ok by the conservatives.

My question would not be the money itself. I would question him spending it on vaccines in a futile attempt to control microorganism spread. It's a futile attempt.

Malnutrition is a much bigger issue to infectious disease than vaccines. All of the vaccines in the world will not work until the conditions change.

Second question, is the money his already or is he raising this money through his charity?

You know, by vaccinating all of these Africans and Asians all you will do is save them from smaller diseases so that they can live long enough to reproduce and pass on the more deadly afflictions like AIDS that we can't cure. They are all sick and riddled with viruses and will die eventually. The only question is how fast they can spread it and take the rest of us with them in varying slow and painful forms. Instead he should spend the money on a people who have a future. I have been to those third world countries on several humanitarian efforts and their cultures and governments will never let them leave the self destructive life styles they have. With their rape, murder, and bastard child rates, illness will never be stopped. Like I said before, 10 billion dollars will only let them live long enough to pass the worst on even more.

I care because I care for where my money goes and what it supports. If I can help it I do not contribute to anything that goes against my beliefs and values. If Bill Gates is trying to RAISE money for this cause that is very different than writing a check from his personal account.

Also, what part did pharmaceutical companies play in this role? He's obviously making a rather large purchase order from them. What is Bill Gate's worldview/philosophy? What is his idea of a better world? What does he believe in terms of population control?

These are just some of the answers I would want to know before I ever supported his foundation.

I'm sick of this Gates couple. Why are they "saving" these poor kids? Saving them from diseases so they can die of starvation, dysentery (the most common cause of death of children 5 years and younger across the entire globe), or live and be sold into slavery by their own parents?

Wouldn't it make more sense to use that money for birth control in those countries, or better yet, use the Gates money and influence to effect real change in the governments of these poor countries?

Even the poor in this country have one thing that most countries around the world do not have: the ability to become anything they want to be. There are so many resources around here in the US that people can take advantage of to help themselves achieve educational and business related goals.

Bill has set up a foundation that works not only overseas but here at home as well. The World helped make Bill one of the richest men in history and he is giving back, globally.

He is also the biggest sponsor of H1B visas while our young graduates stand with their diploma and a hefty school loan and no job. Everyone see things differently but charity starts at home for me. I agree he has the right to do whatever he wants with his money but there is no law that says I have to applaud.

maggie: Believe me, I am the first to say "Hire our own citizens first, give them a shot". But I work in an industry that is similar to his. Industries sponsor H1B Visa's for the simple fact that those candidates bring talents and skills not learned by our own universities. Which again, I think sucks, but that's the truth. Schools in India, Japan and China are crowded with people studying electronic and transportation engineering. The same is not true for the schools here. Therefore, tech companies and engineering firms consistently have to hire from the outside. But that is also why there are caps on the amounts of H1's that are allowed every year. But until our own citizens want and earn these degrees and skills, companies will be forced to go outside. They can not be blamed for that. Our students tend to want to earn $75K or more immediately upon graduation. These kinds of positions do not pay like that, so they are not the priority among our young. And yet they should be, as these are the jobs that are stable and will drive our country forward and allow us to regain our leadership in these industries.
