So we got this wonderful law that is destroying the US toy manufacturers because the expence of testing every iteration the toy may be produced in has to be tested, instead of just testing the materials that would be used to make them. And it still allows metal toxins through from China. Smooth move Congress, you've destroyed US small time operators and done nothing to prevent toxic crap from being foisted on our markets. Woo Hoo!
So how much longer is our government going to allow China to export its poison to the US. It seems that nearly everything coming out of China today has some toxic substance in it, but nobody at the federal level is willing to do anything that might hurt relations with China.
What relations? Them killing us slowly and buying up what's left of the American dream. Are we so afraid of offending Chine over an obvious terrorist tactic (yes, I believe they are knowingly exporting known poisonous products) that we are willing to allow it to continue unchecked.
Quit buying anything made in China until they get the message, or the importers who knowingly distribute these poisonous products are finally brought up on charges. And yes I mean the Wal-Marts and Targets, et-al, of the US.
That's how they make them cheap. No wasting money on toxicity test. It allows Wal-Mart to roll back the price. But American made products have to go through all kinds of test before being sold to the public, therefore you pay more.
If people are worried about this then they should be really worried about other more common things like driving a car or eating a hamburger which are much more likely to cause death or injury.
Obviously you're not a parent. No one cares whether or not you feel the article is worth worrying about.
Let's see how you'd feel if your child was one that was sickened because our idiot Congress has made such horrible decisions regarding this country that it basically allows China to conduct chemical warfare against the citizens of the world.
Right on Brandon!! Not only is China blasting us with chemical warfare, but they own America. There will never be a war with China, they have already won it! Yes, thanks to the baffoons sitting in and around the capitol working, governing, ruling, protecting "for the people by the people"....but "the people" are themselves and everything and everyone foreign.
Stop shopping there, and this will fix itself.
Love the Chinese. I wish there were billions of them, hey wait. I think there almost are. . .
I don't think the Chinese own Walmart. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Love the Chinese! Wish there were billions of them. Hey! Wait, there might already be.
cut off all imports from china is the best solution. If the chinese do not care about thier own people you know they sertainly do not care about Americans.
Now we know what they're doing with all the "recycled" NiCad batteries they get from us! Where are Al and Hillary? Can't their indignation get these people to behave?
I agree, bring manufacturing jobs back to the US.. creating jobs and using our own safety measures and standards. ( although not perfect, seems alot better than China lately)
I thought WalMart once touted itself as a place for American-made products. I guess the quest for money won out over loyalty to the USA. I agree with a previous poster: quit shopping there. I cannot support a company that doesn't treat its employees in a fair manner and I cannot support a company that doesn't support American-made products.
That made in America went out when the founder died. My sister tells me he was all for helping American companies stay open by selling their products. When he died so did the ethics that was Wall Mart and Sam Club.
Gee I wonder which American company was buying this stuff at the cheapest price possible to make the most profit? Why is anyone surprised at the sheer greed of American business?
I'm sorry, but we have outsourced to China and India which has caused part of our high unemployment rate. When are they going to wake up and see the price that is being paid for this! Bring the work back to the US.
I doubt if you will see American companies putting the good of the public ahead of their personal greed anytime soon.
True, Merle, but there are some very small industries out there and little mom & pop shops that are making made in US goods. We need to seek them out and create demand for their products.
Thank You Disney for poisoning America's youth. You get a black princess and this is how things go.
wut????
I can't tell if that's a racial slur or sarcasm.
Talk about throwing your weight around!
Well, it's good that Disney is looking out for the children by forcing people to investigate this toxin further.
But it's not just China, it's worldwide issues going on here.
Regulations on ALOT of things are pretty lax.
Let's stop bashing the Chinese so much, eh?
It really destroys the validity of your opinion if you sound like a racist @!$%#.
You are right that there are some racist comments against the Chinese above. I work in a university and have many Chinese colleagues and friends, have great respect for their culture, and I can in completely good conscience say that I am not a racist. However, my stance on products made in China remains firm, and I think that although they do make some quality products, many of their goods remain questionable at best. They have clearly demonstrated that they have a long, outstanding track record in making dangerous, inferior products that have in multiple incidents been laced with toxic lead, melamine, etc. You are correct that there are worldwide issues going on such as sweatshop labor etc., and that there are competitors from Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. etc. but thus far I have never heard of a toy recall from any other country for these types of toxins. So I think the argument against Chinese-made goods is extremely valid when it comes to product inferiority. I personally have nothing against the Chinese people, and I will stand up to racism against them. However, I do have a big beef against Chinese manufacturing practices (particularly when it comes to health and safety of our children) and their government's acceptance of this and promotion of unfair trade practices, and I will continue to deride their products, where warranted, as "crap".
How much more will the people stand for? The childrens toys, jewelery, babies milk, animal food etc, all poison and still we import this S@@#t! America became a world power building things better, not building things cheaper! It is time to look more closely to the country of manufacture and "MADE IN AMERICA" is still out there if you look! Let the greedy "UNAMERICAN MOGULS" enjoy their bailing out on us and going offshore for obscene profits while we buy elsewhere!
You're absolutely right, Norm. See my posts below; we need to be diligent and take the time and effort to seek out those few "Made in USA" items still out there. I was in one of the "Dollar Tree" (or something like that) stores the other day, and while most of the stuff in there was Made in China, I was very pleasantly surprised to see a good number of Made in USA goods, of good quality and very economical. There are internet sites you can google for stuff that is still made in US also.
Thanks, China! Thanks, Walmart! With "friends" like you, who needs enemies? And a big, fat thanks to the American rich and American government for exporting our manufacturing and making us a debt-slave to China!
What do you think the Walmart priority is?
Total for just these 4 Walton's $79,300,000,000. Combined the Walton family is worth more than Bill Gates at 50,000,000,000.
Walmart..Spend less, live better, DIE sooner!!
Foundryman...LOL...now there is an answer to all our problems.
For the love of Pete when are we as a country going to demand a stop to this madness? Poisoned dogfood, toothpaste, leadbased paint in baby toys, cheap junk tools, appliances that burn up, now this, and it's not just China, Japan with their deathtrap toyotas and coverup are killing Americans!!
Common sense had better return and Americans had better start buying Made in the USA or we not only going to lose all of our manufacturing base, we are going to see increase in child mortality and premature death to many thousands!!
With you 100%, Foundryman. See my other posts on this page, and vote with your $$ and with your feet. Diligence and patience will turn up some good "still made in US" stuff; it's a matter of us as consumers having a choice and creating demand for stuff other than the tainted junk made in China... the more demand we create, the more American will have work making these few items still made in the US. We need to write letters to corporate leadership of Disney, Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us, etc. to let them know how we feel. God knows the Democrats and the Republicans don't give a crap, but once the fat cat CEOs start seeing their stock prices slip a bit and their bonuses go down just an incremental tad bit, they might start to give us a tiny amount of made in USA goods.
Speaking of toothpaste, check out Aquafresh. Still made in USA and distributed out of Moon Township, PA (I don't work for them or have any financial interests in the company).
I am reading the posts ripping into Wal-Mart for selling toxic Chinese items, and posts ripping China for making the toxic crap to begin with. Not one post mentions the distributor in Rhode Island who recalled the items. Do they not have some responsibility in making sure the items they import are safe?
Should we rally to shut Wal-Mart down and create massive unemployment numbers and more foreclosures/starvation/suicides/ economic disaster? Would you go work in a factory so we know the products we buy are safe? Do you think Jessie and Al will be hollering because this was a toy for black kids? Will be lowering test requirements yet again? I can just hear some large, twinkie eating, ale swigging diabetic mom screaming about the poison necklace that Wal-Mart sold her. Somehow I doubt that this toxin is the biggest threat to most kids' safety and health these days, especially for that particular target market.
I agree Linny, and I would also blame DISNEY for their long history of selling our kids this crap!
Why was Wal-Mart's name in the headline instead of the distributor or China? Alternative headlines:
China Sends US More Crap
R.I. Distributor Imports Toxic Toys
White Owned Business Buys Toxic Toys for Black Kids.
(I do not work for Wal-Mart, or any of its successors and/or assigns. I shop there but I always look to see where the item was manufactured.)
Why? Because Wal-Mart panders most of the Chinese-made crap to most of the masses, under the ruse of selling American-made good (which in their defense probably comprises maybe 1% of the offerings in their stores). Merely an example, and "Wal-Mart" is a metaphor for "Toys-R-Us", "Pottery Barn", you name it. So Linny63, I agree with you 100% about almost all of your points above, particularly the topmost one, although I don't think white-owned businesses are buying toxic toys for black kids... that's a tad bit racist and I find that mildly offensive. On that latter point, I would say "corporate American greed is buying toxic toys and cheapest-manufactured Chinese goods for anyone white, black, latino, asian, you name it who doesn't have: A) the guts to demand better; B) the inclination or motivation to turn an item over and examine and identify its country of manufacture; C) the $$ to afford better. My point A is the most important - we must collectively move our $$ away from stores that pander us this crap. Point C is the least important - don't buy cheap crap for your kids if you cannot afford it, better to not buy at all or alternatively save up a bit more to buy something of better quality that is not made in China.
Finally, WE NEED TO TAKE THE ISSUE TO DISNEY!! They are the ones who have the choice whether to manufacture a quality product for our kids, or to make huge amounts of $$ from lowest-bid manufacturers in China who spike in lead and melamine to "thin out" their more expensive components. WRITE DISNEY CORPORATE LEADERSHIP, LOOK UP DISNEY'S EXECS ON THE INTERNET, DEMAND BETTER FOR YOUR KIDS!!!!
Yes, I would much rather have 10 smaller vendors competing for business then one Super Walmart that under cuts the locals until they shut down and then charge you what ever they want.
It would just redistribute the employees, as a matter of fact 10 smaller stores would probably employee more.
Big overgrown companies, cities and government is what is wrong with America. Puts to much control in one hand.
It may be racially motivated. A black movie with tainted products aimed at the black youth. Hmmmmm....taps pointer finger on chin.
I honestly don't believe so at all. It is GREED MOTIVATED. Disney has a long history pandering this cheap junk, whether in partnership with Wal-Mart or Toys-R-Us or whatever, or in their own stores. If people would campaign to write Disney corporate leadership and demand better, and those with financial holdings in Disney would voice their opinion in shareholder votes, they might start listening to the masses. Buy one share of stock in Disney, get your vote on the ballot. Why should our kids have to play with tainted, inferior-grade toys made in China?
There is a huge myth that products made in the USA had a higher selling price. But that is false. When things were made here in the USA they were much better quality and were priced LESS than things made in China. Shareholder profits went up when manufacturing moved overseas. Selling prices also went up.
We are paying more for products made overseas not only in selling prices, but also with our children's health & safety being put at high risk.
You're absolutely right, and if you look very carefully, you can get some awesome deals on US-made items in some of the dollar stores. My wife picked up a great clear glass bowl made by Anchor-Hocking in the USA for $1 just last weekend.
When Sam Walton was alive back in the 1980's I remember that Wal Mart proudly pointed out things made in the USA. Since his death that all changed.
No...all the Walton money was made in the U.S.A. Says so right on the face of each one.
Raj-
Did you ever shop at Wal Mart in the 1980's? If you had you would know what I mean. All through the store were signage touting products made in the USA.
I just wonder if the Walton's buy their clothes from Walmart?
CommonSenseOR, you are absolutely right, I remember when they prided themselves on this. Now things have gone completely about face there. In their defense, I have found a couple items here and there in Wal-Mart that are made in USA. But the vast majority of items are Chinese-made.
I have been really exercising discretion in looking at tags stating country of manufacture. The Made in USA stuff is out there, and can be found in quite some quantities in some of the "dollar store" type places. People would be very pleasantly surprised if they had the ambition to just seek out and find Made in USA goods in stores and on the internet -- it isn't easy, and takes time, but when you find them, please patronize! In my opinion, much of this debate is about the laws of supply and demand. If we create demand for American made goods, then more of it will be sold and inventories will have to be replaced, generating more American jobs. If we create demand for more Made in China goods, more Chinese jobs will be created at the expense of American workers. It's our choice, scrutinize the label on every purchase, and vote with your dollars and your feet (i.e., walk away from the stores that do not provide at least some US made goods).
what unpatriotic americans are buying thigns at walmart?
all they sell is chinese junk and walmart is a threat to national security.
boycott walmart and china
