I agree, strokes are horrible things, no one ever fully recovers.
In a related story; President Obama is recommending that treatment for strokes not be covered in his health care plan,
"Let me be perfectly clear, you may be better off just taking a pill and going home, you're going to die anyway and ACORN needs the money more than you need the treatment."
Wake up James, Obama already advised just such a thing to the daughter of a an elderly woman.
Our society is cheapening life, the unborn get aborted simply because they might be an inconvenience, the elderly are told to consider suicide to lessen the burden they may place on their families and society.
The state of Oregon made doctor assisted suicide legal, this may seem like a gift to some, but remember, what a government can make legal it can make mandatory.
my dad has had 3 strokes, each one taking a little bit more of his ability. Tough to see a man who once could carry an ox now barely able to lift his own hand.
Stroke will cost the US $74 Billion in 2010 alone. This is just one disease and that's just the estimated dollar amount without counting the human suffering it causes. We need strong and unbiased advice regarding preventative behaviors and medicine in this country. We need advice that is untainted by special interest groups. I am so tired of hearing conflicting information on these topics and the classic "there is no scientific data that supports that conclusion" . Well damnit, get the data, get the best information and research possible, and keep up a presistant investigation in to what does work to lower the prevalence of these and other debilitating diseases. And lets not wait to develop some magic pill, that's not always the answer.
Can you say, fried food and a high meat diet? "He said they are not sure of the underlying reasons behind the high risks in South Carolina, in the heart of the U.S. "stroke belt" — a dozen states in the southeast with high stroke rates, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." Lots of people think that traditional southern food has to be fried. They should try Kenyan food, which is much lower in fat, and also has healthy spices such as tumeric which help protect the liver. This study is important, but what they ate should have been noted as well.
diet can be a factor but so can common medications.
Drugs that soften tissues to reduce blood pressure can also lead to strokes, but drugs that fight anemia can also lead to strokes. The body requires a balance, when drugs are introduced for whatever reason the balance is lost.
question ever medication that your doctor prescribes, learn why and what its long term impact may be. The average doctor's appt lasts just 5 minutes, your paying, get your money's worth, ask questions and don't leave until you get answers.
My mother passed away from a stroke within 6 months. She had a mild stroke, but the quack doctor sent her home and refused to thin her blood before they could get her heart in rhythm again. As a result, she suffered a major stroke. She wanted to get up and move around, but she could not move without falling. So one day she fell at the nursing home and developed MRSA. To be honest, I was glad she went to join my father because she would not have been happy in her present condition. I am posting this so if one of your loved ones has a stroke and their heart is out of rhythm, have their blood thinned and their heart beat restored. If the doctor will not do it, go to another hospital, immediately. I know we should have sued, but it simply was not worth it.
Had 3 strokes due to a heretery desease called Catasil ? I'm only 46, lest the left side, just lost my job and am very challenged, Hope the next one hits me good, I love my wife and son.
I had one on Jan 6, 2009 and it's true you will never be the same, I cannot walk very far now without rest, in 2008 I could walk miles and be fine. So you can tell its killing you slowly each month it's seems something else will break on the body soon.I say fast food was a big help, but I knew it going in the door, so no one to blame but myself
my oldest brother had a stroke when he was only 14 yrs of age. he was at school at the time in gym class and they had to run around the 1/4 mike track. he had told his teacher that he wasn't feeling well but the teach insisted that he run. he collapsed a short time later and died 3 days later. my parents were devastated. i, being 9 yrs old at the time didn't fully understand what was going on. this was 1964 and nobody sued anyone then. if it happened now my father would probably be a VERY rich man. i would venture to say that the entire incident affected my family ever since.
The article failed to mention the night mare a stroke can be. My uncle was paralyzed on one side and could not talk. This was permanent.

Remember in November.
Always the slam against the President, sick.

My worst fear is living forever.
My second worst fear is NOT living forever.
Living with a stroke sucks, My son doesn't comprehend what the bodily loss really is,I'm half dead.

I was going to say the same thing. I live in the south and frying food is really big down here. Lots of cholesterol too.

My husband died one year and one month after having a stroke. It has been a year since he passed away, and I'm still devastated. He was only 48.
terrible loss, Della. No patronizing comments, that just really sucks. I hope you can still find some joy on occasion.
I am so sorry for your loss Della. ((hugs)).

blah blah blah Obama, blah blah blah Mexicans, blah blah blah kool-aid.
j/k, but I seriously can't stand when people add their political jabs at every opportunity, whatever your leaning.
It's called freedom!!!!!
