I concur with the assessment of Mike-501780. Every installation commander since the original discovery of the contaminant should be court-martialed for dereliction of duty (NOT taking care of the troops AND the families) and making false official statements. After being reduced a couple of pay grades effective upon their retirement, the individuals who are culpable should be summarily castrated.
A similar situation developed at a local post. Personnel in on-post housing could literally get the tap water to flame because of the heavy concentration fossil fuels that had contaminated the ground water. The Pentagon did not do a damn thing until the civilians in a housing complex just on the other side of the wire started raising cain about their water. THEN the Pentagon took the reports from the post personnel seriously,
Any Commander and/or Pentagon Brass that knew about the situation not only needs to be stripped of Rank but sent to prison. This is absolute criminal negligence at best!
Bases (and the military) are the dirtiest entities aronud the world. I feel sorry for anyone victimized by our "cover-ups" and "reporting errors".. wow, this is unbelievable. A long time ago i was set to join the marines all i had to do was go back for an eye test for my ASVAB and my dad sat me down an asked me if i ever heard of gulf war syndrome. I said yes and he said well the govt claims it doesnt. He said did you ever hear of the negative effects of aent orange on troops in vietnam. I said yes and he said the govt tried not to. He said to me dont go die for something that not only could give two sh1ts about you, but will use you and throw you away. To choose to be a soldier these days is too choose with full knowledge to put your future cildren and family at risk of retardism and health defects and death all by the hands of the govt and military institution you serve. I thank god i listened to my dad and never went back or i wouldnt be a father of some happy healthy children. Its no longer about not going to war because it s just for oil or for someones revenge for their dad being shot. Its about not joining up to save your children. They KILL your children marines, army navy airforce. With shots full of stuff that is gonna affect tem in the future, with exposure to things they will saydont exist. With exposure to weapons wit dangerous levels of radiation because they are effective against te enemy. Tis story just brings it all home, its a sad horrible fact that you the military grunts should change. If any of my children suffered and died from cancer (a horrible way to die by te way), and i found out it was cause of my superior officers and govt, id put that military training to good use against those responsible and id be at my execution hearing reading invictus
My brother did his basic training there and recently died @ age 50 from bone cancer. I don't know if it was all the cigarettes or alcohol that killed him or a few sips of water from this contamination. Hard to say with any certainty.
Someone ought to have their head on a pole for this one. Its bad enough to know that many people (non-military and government alike) don't give a rats butt about soldiers but to be poisoned by contamination when all they had to do was fix the problem makes this extremely disgusting.
Wow! Pennsylvania, what a state! Two juvenile court judges taking almost $3 million in kickbacks from the company who runs the "kiddie prisons" to keep the places full so they can collect the maximum from the state (taxpayers), and now an environmental company that whitewashed a report for the military about cancer-causing agents in water at a military base.
Gives new meaning to the phrase, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."
I almost made the same comment. I believe screminmimi is referring to the fact that The Baker Corp (the third research firm who shrunk the stats and then let them disappear) is headquartered in Pennsylvania.
BTW - I believe I read that a judge (of course) determined that those damn juvey judges cannot be sued in civil court! Something to do with they were just doing their job - what a farce! Judges, congressmen, CEO's, and now our military leaders - none of them can be trusted to have any morals.
What do you expect? As long as you can perform your job to the military's satisfaction, they could care less. Most people do their enlisted time and get out. Any health problems that come up after you leave the military is your problem, not theirs. Just take a good look at all of the controversy on how the wounded soldiers are treated once back from our wars.
Do a blood test on the commanders of the military base. If they alone do not have the same level of poison in their blood as the Marines and their families, it is proof that they knew the water was contaminated and didn't drink it, but allowed everyone else to.
Too bad for those who have suffered for so many years, or lost their lives due to this terrible travesty. It just goes to show that, to the Military, peoples' lives including their dependents are just a comodity, and that there is an acceptable level of loss.
Haven't you people figured it out yet? Our government views military troops and their families as expendable and replaceable objects. If you die there will always be another unfortunate military family to take your place. Sorry for your loss. Do you think the government is going to admit this mistake and open themselves up to civil and criminal liability? Not on your life. Oh wait...on second thought...it IS on your life. Ha...my bad. Keep paying your taxes folks. There are thousands of government beaurocrats to feed.
I don't think you CAN sue the Government. Can anyone verify this. I know when you use a military hospital they require the patient to sign a waiver from with regards to being able to sue the Military for negligence.
Follow the money! Someone profited from this! An officer may have been paid off by those who were responsible to fix the problem when it was discovered. The investigation will be a joke. No criminal charges will be brought to bear on those who were responsible for the reports being altered, and why they were! Marines, and their families aren't important enough to those in office until they're called into combat and the politicians get a lot of photo ops, and TV time to spout of their respect and love for the Marine Corps! But hey, Ken Starr had full authority to criminally charge anyone not cooperating with his sixty million dollar investigation that only proved Clinton got some head in the White House! Guess I'll never understand the moral priorities of those in office!
Nothing but the best for our fighting men and women!!(sarcasm) Wouldn't surprise me if it's exempt from their insurance. Some a$$es should swing for this.
WHAT insurance?!? Im not able to get coverage because of pre-exsiting conditions. Guess where the pre-exsitings came from?? *bingo* From me living at CL,NC for close to 10yrs! Before we moved to VA and then back to NC,my mom got pregnant with me there and consumed the water while pregnant with me. Then *I* consumed the water with my formula! We moved back to NC when I was 11. I got a *extra doses*! *YAY*ME!! NOT! *grrrr*
This story makes me very angry, and dumbfounded. THIS is what's wrong with most large institutions - government, big business, religion - where you'd think the average IQ and morality of its members decreases in an inverse-square manner compared to the number of participants.
That's terrible. You know they use Benzene when they are drilling the gas wells. I wonder how many people are drinking this stuff around the country that get their water from wells? If you do a search on it, it looks like there a quite a few instances. I can't believe the govt let's these companies use this chemical.
Did I read the article correctly and they have YET to stop the leaks. Think twice before joining the Marines because it might not be a foreign enemy that kills you.
You got that Right. Witness Agent Orange killing soldiers in Vietnam then and now. Who knows what else is lurking out there killing us and being covered up. I suffer from the effects of agent Orange in my body-Chose not to have children because of the birth defects associated with Agent Orange (AO) and evidenced by the offspring of veterans who served in Nam. And the VA has fought me for years about my condition not being related to AO.
And don't forget the deliberate exposure to radiation and LSD that some sectors of our military were exposed to in the now distant past. You have to love the way that the Pentagon quickly sweeps these annoying little scandals under the rug, then the government grudgingly apologizes for them decades later when most of the people affected are dead.
I'm on my 7th year claiming Agent Orange caused my Leukemia even though it is presumptive and others were approved. I lived in the most sprayed areas in Viet Nam as a grunt. Deny Deny Deny Last letter asked me to prove I had leukemia in Viet Nam. I'm saying WTF?
The Corps fed me mefloquine tablets in the gulf and in Somalia, "magic" innoculations for nerve gas in the gulf, six anthrax shots, and provided me benzene water for my 4 years at Lejeune, so it's no wonder I've got serious nerve damage and also can no longer walk or even stand on my own at the age of 45. VA says I can't prove my condition is service-related but I did get 10% disablility for my knee. I loved the Corps but am beginning to think I paid more than my share of dues to this nation.
Yes thank you mad dog. This is disgusting ignorance at its best and its a shame that you (our fighting men and women) who take all the risks are left with the bill. I'm going to try to go eat dinner now, if I can keep anything down after hearing about this horror.
I served 4 years in the Marine Corps, i was in Lejeune one month for infantry training, after returning from one tour in Nam as a grunt with India 3/9 I spend 5 months in Lejeune and went back for my second tour with my same unit. I spend my last two months with the Marine in Lejeune
On July 2009 I was diognosed with bladder cancer, there is no family history of cancer on both side of my parents.
The VA told me my condition was not related to Camp Lejeune water contaminated.
The only time I used my VA benefits when I put myself through college
MadDog, my hat is off to you sir for your struggle with the Veteran's Administration. Their action plan is to deny, deny, and when all else fails deny help to veterans with service caused disabilities and claims for compensation. Remember that once you have served their purpose in war they are through with you. They will deny and deny claims hoping that the veteran will give up or die. Its all about costs.
Even active duty personnel are on food stamps. This is a black mark on the honor of America esp. when we spend billions on the defense of other countries and their military while insulting our own good, honorable families serving our nation.
When you were with 3/9 you were exposed to Agent Orange. I was with 3/4 at probably about the same time. One of the many, many illnesses linked to Dioxins like Agent Orange is bladder cancer. Go back to the VA and register under their Agent Orange program. Also Type 2 Diabetes has been linked to the same stuff
My husband was stationed @ LeJeune from Oct 05 - Feb 07. If I remember correctly, it seems he told me one time that he had to sign some sort of waiver releasing liability of the USMC regarding the water situation.
Coincidently, our son was born November 2007 with multiple congenital heart defects that has required two open-heart surgeries on thus far... with more to come.
As like MadDog, my husband has had the same innoculations (several times over due to the USMC losing his medical records that showed that he'd already had all of them once), and can also barely move at the age of 26... yet, the VA says that he cannot prove that his conditions are service related.
Speaking of medical records also, when my husband requested a copy of what medical records they could find for him, when I went thru the file - I found 3 other people's records inside the same folder with my husband's. Record keeping in the military is a GD joke!!
Send a letter each month to your Senator in Washington, D.C. each month. Always type the letter in Size 14 Font Verdanda. Next month send the letter by mail on a different color of paper using Font Size 14 in Times new Roman.
Go to the web site www.whitehouse.gov and voice your complaint every week about the Medical Recrords being lost at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Ask President Obama for help in getting this paperwork.
With everything hitting the news about the lies being told to us by our government, there are still some that doubt they would do anything on purpose to hurt us. I do not feel safe and do not believe a word they say. Makes me wonder if all the lives given for our country was really necessary.
Benzene from leaked gasoline has been a classic problem across the USA. It was "spilled" for years from single-wall steel tanks that were everywhere. The EPA did little, state regulators did little, and oil companies didn't try to stop this because fue was too cheap to bother. Still we drank the bad water. Often it was local agencies, like one courageous commissioner on our City Commission who publicized leaks, spillage and coverups, and finally stopped it by insisting on double-walled gasoline tanks on every corner gas station. You should have head the complaints- she was called everything under the sun!
This will go on for a long time. They have to look at original lab reports, field notes, interviews and depositions. Mucho lawyer time. Note that the benzene results are all just multiples of 10, like 38, 380, and 3,400 ppb - seems like some errors one way or another reading results. If this had been a civilian issue and this many people then $300 million awards would just be a start. Talk about Stimulus Dollars (i.e. tax dollars). I feel for the troops and families that lived there.
Has anyone thought to check why this contractor left this lil' detail out of the report? Has anyone thought to fire this contractor? Are American tax dollars still paying him? Why?
Has anyone contacted each and every Marine who was affected? Or is that another lil' detail?
Anyone connected to this should be ashamed of themselves.
The JAG stands for Judge Advocate General. The JAG is completely subordinate to the military commanders. They are purely an administrative court having none of the powers conveyed by Art.III of the Constitution on the Judiciary. JAG, therefore, has no authority to do anything about this tragedy. Obama, as the C-I-C is the ultimate authority over the military. he appears to be more interested in military homosexuality than the health of ALL persons and families in the military. I served for 8 years in the Corps...only 12 weeks at Lejeune. I once fought with my superiors over an asbestos problem...they never addressed the problem. I truly loved the Corps but I could not stand the pig headed ignorance which they often professed with pride. I saw a young man electrocuted because he was ordered to perform repairs for which he was not trained...I could...cry
My cousin is a Lt Col Jag and you are exactly right.
I did my Boot Camp at San Diego but was only in for 1 year 8 months and 22 days. As a Door Gunner that was long enough to receive two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Medical discharge. They did give me $175.00 per month disability but thanks to the GI bill they also put me through Medical School.
I would say this report is just as much news to Obama as it is us. But now that it is out some heads are going to roll.
Obama can overcome virtually all of the military's questions about him if he comes out swinging on this issue. I did not vote for him but if he truly kicks some butt on this issue I might consider voting for him. Sadly, history does not bode well for those effected by this tragedy.
When I was stationed atthe air base at Tustin, Ca I was told that a similar situation exist there. Prime O.C. real estate was turned into a Park? Really? They knew better than to build homes over that Superfund waste site.
I'll be honest...Jag and NCIS have a bad rep in the Military..and a great rep on TV..the last erpson anyone wants to see or be near in any branch of service is one of these jack offs. More known for witch hunts than any real fact finding. Sorry if your the one good NCIS or JAggy...but I've seen first hand what you guys do and many others....I don't think anyone in the NAvy will forget what you guys did with the U.S.S. Iowa incident.
Disgusting to say the least and it goes along with other health care issues veterans have to cope with through the VA which is a bureaucratic failure that practices denial of health problems that troops are service connected.
It took the VA years to acknowledge the damage done by agent orange and now the practice of denial and coverup is brought home in the way of toxic drinking water and who knows what else. Some heads need to roll for this.
At the present time, this current elected People don't care about the older Marines ( having health problems) who were at Camp Lejune, N.C. because the Congressman or Senator in 2010 worries about people who never served in the U.S. Military.
This next Election I won't vote for Congressman Hare (17th District) in Illinois because he won't submit a Bill into the 109th and 110th Congress for the 'Cold War' passed in the 104th Congress to be inserted into the Title 38, United States Code ( Laws used by the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Offices). It is time for another person to be the Congressman of the 17th District of Illinois.
No problems here folks---we'll make sure we manipulate the "rules of war" to ensure we don't offend Muslim sensibilities and this pesky benzene "thingey"...well, we can always find more Marines.
In summary.....I'm tired of us getting f---d whether we're USMC or USN or USA. I'm glad I ended my career several months ago as an USAR officer....stuff I'm reading would make me do something treasonous.
The Government does not care about you and me. This is just another example to prove that all those things the politicians say is just positive sounding spin; they will say anything to get re-elected. The politicians will also bash the other party in everything they say, but once they get elected, they are all the same self-serving pigs at the trough.
And the base commanders should be shot if their blood samples show a lower level of these chemicals than the enlisted people - they knew but did nothing to stop the poisoning of enlisted people.
It's nut-cuttin' time.
Let's hope that someone is made to pay for a change. But, based on past experience, it's not gonna happen...

ck2k11 has been drinking something worse than Camp Lejeune water.
So, if they don't get cancer in Basic the Depleted Uranium munitions will get them in the field, way to look after the troops Uncle Sugar.
Sorry to get Legeune and Paris Island confused, I was a prop top.
Why were environmental contractors doing this? Every base has the EPA doing tests on who knows what.

This is how our military takes care of military families. It's disgusting.
It's not just the military. Nearly 40% of military families are eligible for food stamps.
What do you expect? As long as you can perform your job to the military's satisfaction, they could care less. Most people do their enlisted time and get out.
I have heard this also..but I can't verify either. My husband had to sign waivers @ LeJeune. Go figure.
Has anyone ever heard of the JAG? Can we be apprised of their involvement and their findings?
One day there will be justice done.
Gunny, Semper Fi
Thank you for your service. I am sorry that our government allowed something like this to happen rather than showing you respect and gratitude.
My son, an Iraq War vet, would agree with you.
Thank you so much for all you've given for our country.
Semper Fi MadDog,
Gunny
MadDog e-mail me @ glrobinson@cox.net and i can help help get that increase from 10%.. Im a 100% disable combat veteran
Is this how we repay the men and women who serve our country? Disgraceful.
Greed takes its toll again
My son did boot camp there.
Your son did NOT attend boot camp at camp Lejeune. Parris Island S.C. is the East Coast boot camp. Lejuene is in N.C.
esi,
You beat me to it.lol
You guys impressing yourselves? Check your facts before you tell people what they know...
One more time ---Has anyone ever heard of the JAG? Can we be apprised of their involvement and their findings? Stop waiting for the press.
I saw a young man electrocuted because he was ordered to perform repairs for which he was not trained...I could...cry
esi,
My cousin is a Lt Col Jag and you are exactly right.
It's all about Money!!!! Screw everything and everyone else lets just go for the Buck.
Bet you anything the higher ups never went near tap water but never said a word to anyone about the dangers.
