Yep, parents need to know. Not only to confront their newly adult children about whats been going on in their lives, but hey, are the parents footing the bill of these "adults"? In that case they definatly need to know. Their money, they get to know. If you are footing the bill on your own, then you can do what you will.

It doesn't matter that kids become legal adults at 18, it's still ILLEGAL to drink until you are 21.

Either a person is an adult at 18 or theyre not. If they ARE adults at 18, then a school really has no right to inform the parents of anything. In fact, regardless of who is paying the bill, schools are not allowed to release grades to parents. How is this different? Now, if they are NOT adults at 18, then 18 year old children have no business being sent to foreign nations to die for our country.

You can't have it both ways. They are either adults or children. They can't be both, even if they act like it.

No way! Most of the people I went to college with paid their own tuition and bills with loans and by working, like I myself did. Are things that different 10 years later? Although, in the same vein, if they get caught underaging or doing something stupid, then I wouldn't expect Mommy and Daddy to bail them out. If parents are responsible, they would've talked to their kids about the dangers of underage drinking well before they went off to college anyway, like my parents did. How else are kids going to learn if colleges are going to insist M&D being underfoot?

I would want to know, if I were paying for their education.

If we can send our children to war at 18, the least we can do is to respect their judgement enough to let them have a drink at that age. And that is the problem: we do not have that trust in them and if we gave them that trust, they might become more responsible because of it. It speaks volumes for our American society!

All students should be following the laws of the state regarding allowable age for drinking. most say no one under 21 can drink. If I were paying the cost of college for my son/daughter and they were drinking instead of studying or doing community or volunteer work I would no longer foot the bill.

We call them too young on the one hand, yet, we are willing to send them off to war and take a bullet in the head for our freedom. Seems to be a moral dilemma there.

I say only if they are paying the bills. Otherwise, its none of their business. I moved out at 19 and moved to another state. Went to college and paid for it myself. I don't see how it would have been any of my parents business?

I am a thirty-something who works at a college. I identify as a "Gen Xer" and went to college before the change to the federal privacy law that protected students from being "snitched on" by the their college was modified. I appreciate that my parents asked how things were going and took an interest in my college education; however, they did not meddle, they did not tell me what to do, and they did not try to fix my problems. They knew I needed to learn how to be responsible adult and suffer the real consequences of my screw-ups. To parents of Millenials, I have to tell you, from working with your kids, some of you are delaying their growing-up with your overly hands-on approach and its damaging them in a variety of ways. Some aren't doing as well in the job market or understanding how to work with a supervisor, some aren't having authentic relationships, some can't stick-up for themselves. It's time to give up the soccer-mom-and-dad lifestyle and rediscover your own interests and passions. Your kids aren't going to be very good at taking care of you when the tables are turned if they are still ignorant of the way the real world works in their late twenties because you do almost *everything* for them. Back off and give them a chance to figure out life on their own. Didn't your Mom and Dad do that for you?

Let me give you the perspective if a person with a few years' experience working on a college campus.

The student in the story said, "We are adults. Treat us like adults." Well, that's all well and good, but there is a problem. Students want to be treated as adults when it's CONVENIENT to them to be treated like adults. They also want to be coddled and treated like children - when it's CONVENIENT for them to be treated like children. For the college administration, it's a constant battle.

Should we notify parents? Yes. Sometimes, it's the best and only way to get a student's attention ("Do ANYTHING to me, just don't call my parents..."). On the flipside, sometimes it does nothing. When boomers and X'ers went to college and got in trouble, we were in even more trouble at home. When millenials get in trouble, the first thing THEIR parents do is come to their defense and threaten to sue everything that ain't holding still. The one lesson our students are NOT getting in college is personal accountability (but then look at our country as a whole...but I digress).

There is a pretty constant pattern though. When a student is standing in front of my desk and that student is an idiot - and then I speak with the parents - I usually find out that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Are you in the dark, she doesn't know what her kids are doing, she's too busy trying the scam money off the american people. Not to mention other people watch her kids! Absolutely I'd want to know if you child was drinking underage.

We have such an awful relationship with alcohol in this country. I would have LOVED for there to be less binge drinking when I was in college - that lifestyle just doesn't appeal to me, the whole frat party/get wasted every weekend/you're a loser if you don't drink. I didn't make many friends in my first college because of it, and that atmosphere was a large contributor to my transferring. If something... ANYthing...could have curbed that atmosphere, I'd be all for it.

However, I don't see what's so wrong about having a beer or two to relax and unwind. Or a margarita out at dinner. Something responsible, even under 21. Why can't we create that sort of atmosphere? It's healthy all around.

Since in many cases the parents are footing the bill or are guaranteeing the loans, if the kid is found to be drunk... absolutely notify the parents.

As a recent graduate, the idea of notifying parents is absurd, 90% of students drink, and a lot... Parents are getting far too overprotective. What's next, notifying your parents when you find a condom on the floor?

The drinking age in most states is 21, not 18. If a student is 21 and self-supporting what she does is her business only.
