Guess what america - you are!! I was in the States last year and actually saw a number of people doing this in various states. In Utah, in phoenix and in nevada. The one in phoenix was the best one - a very old woman driving a huge cadillac driving around a GATED COMMUNITY pulling a little dog on a lease. This was actually pointed out to me and had I seen it right away I would have yelled at the old woman to STOP and taken the poor little dog OFF of the lease. Why are people so stupid??? Have we lost the ability to think of the outcome of what we do? It just goes to show though - it is not limited to one area of the world. There are "stupids" everywhere. I feel sorry for the poor animals that cannot defend themselves
You are correct. Have seen it here in the States myself and it IS INDEED cruel. Leash gets tangled on something in road, dog spooked and runs under car, etc. just plain STUPID. The golf course folks use their GOLF CARTS to sit in and ride while they walk their dogs. Not quite as bad as an auto but still STUPID. One hopes they wouldn't walk their grandchild that way. WHY?
What I dislike seeing is parents driving their vehicles slowly on or very near the sidewalks while their little 'trick-or-treaters' go from door to door. I don't believe that is very smart or safe as someone could come up and grab their little ones while they're still wrestling with their seatbelt. This just seems too lazy to me!
Besides, half the fun is (or 'was' since mine are grown) parading around the neighborhood showing off your cute little 'goblins'.
I do too and it disturbs me because dogs are not made to run in a straight line continuously for miles. I can see going a few blocks but I've seen people dragging their dogs behind them on a bike in hot weather. The dogs look fatigued and worn out. Usualy I see this being done to pit bulls.
Utty - it is really awful to see. Or, the bicyclist will stop on a dime and the poor dog almost chokes itself as it keeps running, or gets tangled up in the front spokes. Very dangerous for both. I don't have a dog so I am unsure, but there has to be laws against this because it seems abusive to me.
I really want to say something to the bicyclist whenever I see this, but I have no doubt they'll say or do something rude/vulgar and ride off with the poor dog dragging along.
And people wonder why some otherwise good family dogs, attack.
Yeah, you yanks like to yank YOUR dog on a lease while riding a bike. I cannot believe how many people I saw doing this in Utah. I know it happens everywhere BUT the sport fiends in Utah seem to think that this is good exercise for their dogs. Crazies.
you MUST have family there. otherwise foreigners wouldn't even know where that IS! New York, Disney, L.A., Las Vegas, that is more of the foreign tourist destination.
My neighbor used to 'walk' the dog tied to the back of the pick-up, driving around the block twice. He must have gotten some comments, cause now the dog's not walked at all...
My dog used to be able to run faster than I could bike. I'd take her to open lots and we'd "race". She was off the leash and ran freely. I'd inevitably fall over because she'd get in front of me and stop abruptly. I'd have to swerve to get out of her way. We had some good times. I clocked her at about 35 mph. She used to run along side rabbits for sport. She'd never catch them or anything. Just ran next to them. She's old now and can't run like that anymore. But I would never leash my dog and make her run beside me while in a car or on a bike.
At the end of the story, I translated that to: He was also famed by the police for attempted murder. That is all the pigs got, to give him a ticket for improper driving.
bahaha! I love how they threw in the bit about a murder at the end so casually. "Oh yeah, by the way he was involved in a murder last year BUT ANYWAYS..."
What's the saying..."If your dog is fat, you're not getting enough exercise?" I'm guessing he's a bit portly, too...
Why on earth would you do that to your dog!
Not really. He can buy an inexpensive automatic fish or bird feeder. However, he will have to get up to change the batteries at least once every three or four months.
Why did he bother with a leash? He could have simply drove away and the dog would have chased the car. Ah, but then he'd be fined for letting a stray dog run the streets.
Not so strange----I remember in the 1940's in England seeing an "upper class" lady riding in the back of a limo with the door slightly open and a long leach in her hand with her dog trotting alongside---her "man" was driving very slowly---------a picture of affluence!!
In this case he was fined for driving---if someone else had been doing the driving it would have been accepted.
I did this on a remote logging road with my Dalmation when he was young. I got tired of being pulled when I walked him and yes I know all the dog training guide lines. Dalmations are running dogs and like to lead, especially the males. I ended up getting a goat leash with a swivel and pulled his collar up under his ears like the professional dog show people do. He died in January 13 years old, fat and lazy. No I did not strangle him either.
how ridiculous that he was charged let alone that it should be newsworthy, let alone that people should agree with british justice, obviously flawed. After my mom got old and couldnt walk well anymore she still exercised her dog in exactly this manner, tied to the back of her pick up and if anyone had cried about it the country boys back home would have kicked their asses. The dog got his exercise, there are plenty of roads that are isolated enough to pose no vehicular hazard, and people need to mind their own business more and others business less. What a stupid case.
He obviously wasn't handicapped, and walking a dog that way is a hazard for other cars in the street. You don't know if where this man lived that it would be okay to do this, and if your mother needed a dog walker she could have gotten a neighborhood kid to do it for her.
Not stupid at all. Consider the poor dog, having to walk beside a moving vehicle which could have accelerated suddenly for any number of reasons. Plus, when you drive a car, you drive a car. You don't also text messages, brush your teeth, get dressed, or walk your dog. Some idiots have been caught doing all these things and more while driving. I once saw a man riding his bicycle on a busy sidewalk, while simultaneously walking his leashed dog. Dog and bike were on opposite sides of the sidewalk, which made for "interesting" interaction with pedestrians.
I had a scumbag, wife-beater wearing, trailer trash type neighbor who would run his doberman up and down the street like this. This was about 8 years ago in Black Rock, CT, on Wilson Street. I added the location so if he reads it he'll know what all the neighbors thought of him. He's probably dead by now anyway because he was a smelly, fly-ridden, fat slob who couldn't muster enough strength to stand up on his spindly, hair infested legs and take his dog for an honorable walk. The doberman was a beautiful dog though. (:oD
I lived in alaska and let my golden retriever run next to my truck on a forest service road. I am not lazy, I just can't run 20 miles an hour like my dog liked to. He is dead now RIP BoBo! It is better than the millions of people who get a dog and never take him for a walk, or run for that matter! I guess you will have to turn me in...
My daughter and son in law saved a dog from impound that turned out to be a lost sled dog. He is a sprinter and makes me run him at least three times a week. I inherited the guy when my daughter and husband were transfered to Arizona. Because of his heavy undercoat and a no pet policy where they moved, I wound up keeping him for them. It took several months before he accepted me as family but over the years that has changed. He has never lost his need to pull and run. his favorite thing is getting loose and rubbing his shoulders in the worse smelling slime he can find then coming home for a bath. His second choice is getting impounded and costing us over a hundred bucks to retrieve. Since I am handicaped and unable to hang onto his leash at full pull, we tried him running alongside the vehicle. Instant success and best of both worlds for him. He loves the initial sprint where I rush the vehicle into his top speed range and he keeps watch on the front wheel to see how fast or when to turn. We knew from the few times we walked him that he knew how to keep the lease untangled which amazed me to no end. I had never had a dog that knew how to watch for signage, trees, bushes and such. Over the years, we developed a routine where I would take him to work and let him run in the parking lot. He is a little vain as well. After a few laps he will drop into the dog trot/gait that sled dogs use to conserve energy. Whenever he notices someone watching, he will break into a canter, lope or full run for a short distance and look up at me and grin. After several laps, he will begin watching me closely and that is my cue that he has broken a sweat and ready to go back home. I stop, load him, scoop the poop and pick up some jerky treats for the ride home where he drinks the bowl dry. There is no doubt in my mind that he enjoys his runs and will talk back to me if he can't go during a rainy day or if it is too late and there isn't a safe place to let him run. I have to watch him carefully and allow for frequent stops to mark or sniff up the scents that I can only imagine could be. I can understand people with safety concerns but would invite you to walk a mile in our shoes before passing judgement. Until then, we enjoy a truely wonderful relationship. oldnslow1
And we think Americans are fat and lazy.
We are fat and lazy in America, but we may not be the only ones.
we may be fat and lazy, but at least we don't walk our dogs from our cars..
I can't believe the BCLU wasn't defending this guys right to walk his dog.

@!$%#ing Brits... Believe me, I know... I used to be one!
Maybe The Republican party can take a lesson from this man. lazy or not he got the job done.
I do too and it disturbs me because dogs are not made to run in a straight line continuously for miles. I can see going a few blocks but I've seen people dragging their dogs behind them on a bike in hot weather. The dogs look fatigued and worn out. Usualy I see this being done to pit bulls.

Blimey what a silly Bloke.. such goings on in the Mother country. This makes me laugh my arse off.. Perhaps us Yanks aren't so bad after all..
Ummmm, that cat got out of the bag the first time I saw Chubby Brown. Any country that births such has no right to look down their nose......
Yeah, you yanks like to yank YOUR dog on a lease while riding a bike. I cannot believe how many people I saw doing this in Utah. I know it happens everywhere BUT the sport fiends in Utah seem to think that this is good exercise for their dogs. Crazies.
so you come to america-- and you go to Utah??
you MUST have family there. otherwise foreigners wouldn't even know where that IS! New York, Disney, L.A., Las Vegas, that is more of the foreign tourist destination.
have a great day!
Grey Mare
Where in Utah did you see this?
My neighbor used to 'walk' the dog tied to the back of the pick-up, driving around the block twice. He must have gotten some comments, cause now the dog's not walked at all...
Damn do gooders screwing the world up. I bet that dog didn't even noticed.
My dog used to be able to run faster than I could bike. I'd take her to open lots and we'd "race". She was off the leash and ran freely. I bet the dog was thinking WTF. Maybe I can drive and the man can walk along side, see how he likes it.
Walking the dog takes on a whole new meaning.
Wow, what a moron!
What's the saying..."If your dog is fat, you're not getting enough exercise?" I'm guessing he's a bit portly, too...
Why on earth would you do that to your dog!
Watched too many car dog walking movies.........but he learned from "Murder she wrote".
Why did he get a dog if he finds it too bothersome to walk the poor animal? He should have gotten himself a fish or a bird.
Well, he'd have to get up off the couch to feed the fish or the bird. I know, he could train the bird to feed itself and the fish!
Not really. He can buy an inexpensive automatic fish or bird feeder. However, he will have to get up to change the batteries at least once every three or four months.
This guy attracts bad luck.
total IDIOT! Got what he deserved.
Why did he bother with a leash? He could have simply drove away and the dog would have chased the car. Ah, but then he'd be fined for letting a stray dog run the streets.
But he'd still have his driver's license....
Probably figured if he drove the pigs wouldn't notice him!
I have to think of Aunt Edna's dog in "National Lampoon's Vacation".
LMAO I love that movie!
I just snorted my water! That hurt!!!
LMAO: Has your father ever killed anyone?
Just a dog. Oh and my Aunt Edna.
Hey you can't prove that Russ.
LOL Draven.....damn it now I want to watch that film!!
"Is this your idea of a good restaurant, DOG KILLER?!!"

I've seen several people doing this in my very neighborhood.
