New York City's obesity rate has climbed in recent years, but there are large variations across the city's neighborhoods, with lower income areas hit hardest, a new study finds.

Eating healthy is expensive so this is a no brainer.Unfortunately not eating healthy is expensive too in the long run anyways.I am going back to eating right myself to much of the good life is killing me.
I see obesity all around me, Rich, Poor, Or middle class! The problem is we have transferred from a farming society into a sit behind a desk one. We have computers, Mcdonalds, processed foods, more soda, and the list goes on...
These people don't work, they sit on their asses all day long. All they do is eat. And they eat better than those of us who do work, believe me, follow me to a grocery store down here where I live if you don't believe me. These people are fed, clothed, get medicine free, they live better than those of us in the middle class busting our asses every day. No wonder they're obese.
'Fitness centers'? Walking a few blocks is free. Push-ups are free. Crunches are free.
Which is the most expensive; ice cream
potato chips
bag of dried red beans
I'd like to see obesity rates broken down according to food stamp recipients vs. those not on food stamps.
Do you realize that "taking the stairs" isn't possible if the stairwells are dangerous. Often urban people are afraid to take the stairs - with good reason.
And believe me, New Yorkers walk more than people living in any other city in America - and certainly more than anyone living outside an urban center. You can't afford to own a car and taking a taxi is nearly as expensive. People in NY walk to bus stops and subway stations.
Do away with welfare and make people get jobs. Hard work and having to pay for the food they eat will do what government subsidies and food stamps never will.
There are already 6 applicants for every job opening.
What jobs would you like to give them?
Lower income, welfare areas - Real problem is food stamp programs ---- When on food stamps you get an ATM card which you take to the grocery store and get to buy ANY kind of food you want and from personal experience as a cashier in a grocery store I can attest to the fact that the majority of food stamp users in Missouri ate as unhealthly as possible. Enforce strict list of foods you can buy with food stamps easily done through UPC databases and still allowing a person to use an ATM card, problem solved for the most part right there. Second require anyone on food stamps to attend weekly/monthly nutrition meetings/counseling.
"....Poor are more obese"! Sounds like a recipe for a new government funded program that we can't afford. These folks are probably included the "30 million uninsured" that we are all going to pay for if Obama gets his healthcare policy passed.
Fixing food stamp abuse is really simple. Stamps could only be redeemed in "certified" grocery stores that have the check-out computer programmed to accept only real food items. Junk food would be rejected.
This is not a surprise. Lack of fresh and organic grocery stores; expense of fresh foods; lack of education and loss of traditional family knowledge; all these facts contribute to the obesity epidemic.

We have recognized the obvious addictive substances like drugs and alcohol in our society, and one of the most common is food. Most people are obese because they compulsively overeat and poor food choices at that. Educated, more financially well off people have yet to truly recognize food as an addiction so how can people who lack the education and means be expected to deal with food issues. I know this because I am a recovering food addict who lost 150lbs giving up the substances like sugar that were killing me. My heart goes out to all who suffer like I did.
