Germs that make their home in the gut may help cause obesity and a range of health-threatening symptoms that go along with it, researchers reported on Thursday.
Rhonda: I'm not "perfect... in every way", but despite 'genes' that say I should be fat (mother and paternal aunts both in the 200+ lb range), 'thyroid issues' (thyroid removal which means my body doesn't metabolize anything without medication), osteo-arthritis and spine issues (that prevent me from my previously-attended exercise class) and a fairly sedentary job, I am not fat. I'm 55 yo, 5'7", and while I can no longer get into my jeans from high-school, I haven't needed to wear the "X" sizes, either.
My point is that people get fat for a reason, and usually, that reason is preventable. I'm just tired of people excusing their fat because they have "big bones" or because their whole family is, or they were a fat baby, or some other ridiculous excuse like "bacteria in the intestines", which will be the next thing now that this study has been done. People generally get fat because they don't do enough of that exercise where they use their arms to push away from the table.
pkwight- so, is that what you are advocating for obese people? Concentration camps? I've been told that obese people should be used as cannon fodder so it wouldn't shock me....
Makes sense........developed countries have the antibiotics that eventually kill off competeing organisms........................hope they study this more intensely.......I am sure they will........
Nutritional changes have probably contributed towards growth of bad bacteria. There are several changes, but I think the consumption of corn and chicken would be one of the significant ones. I have battled overweight all my life, stopped eating eggs and chicken because of acne and, while still somewhat overweight, I have stabilised my weight at this level for more than 10 years. I never eat any corn/maize stuff.
Americans, listen up....it's 32 oz. Cokes, high fructose corn syrup, fried food, beef, baked goods, in between meal snacks and NO exercise that's making you fat!!!
Stop driving everywhere and try walking or riding a bike. Stop looking for EVERY excuse to avoid any exercise. Use hand tools instead of power tools.
For example, don't use a stupid leaf blower that just increases noise pollution and makes people's allergies worse. A broom and a rake work much better AND give you some exercise.
Hahahaaha!!! We are fat because we are lazy!! We spend all of our time in front of inert objects!.
I am fat. I know it is because I have been lazy. I don't have a germ. I don't have an illness. I have just been way too lazy in the past few years. When I worked in the lube shop, changing oil and stuff, I had a great figure! Nice curves, tight stomach, legs looked great!!! ( yes, girls work there too!). Too bad they paid so crappy. Was a good job otherwise.
No, it's all the food you're shoveling down your face while sitting on your keester not doing anything about it that makes you fat. These kind of articles make me sick.
Please note that this finding was discussed over a year ago on page 175 of my book Stealth Germs in Your Body published by Sterling publishing in 2008.
See the book for many other interesting associations, including the role of adenovirus in obesity.
This is a very good start on a much needed health problem. I think some of the "legal" chemicals hidden in "proprietary" ingredients may be the cause of our health problems with obesity. Great work.
Nothing makes you fat other than ingesting more calories than you burn through physical activity. It's a simple formula; #calories in, minus #calories burned = weight gain.
Did anyone actually read this article, or did you just see the headline and jump in with the same tired old fat-bashing? People generally eat when they are hungry (regardless of the wisdom of their food choices.) If the bacteria in your gut make you hungrier, you are likely to eat more unless you are consciously choosing to restrict your diet. If your insulin response is affected, you are liklier to put on weight when you eat more. If you could change your gut bacteria (very hard to do) maybe it would be easier to lose weight (99% who try gain it back again.) Why is this discovery a bad thing? It could help all of those fatties you hate so much lose that weight. But then who would you bash?
Note to the "concentration camp" idea above (pkwight). I know a gentleman who was a prisoner of war in Germany. One thing he noticed was that while they were there, everyone was very thin. However, after they were freed and all met up again after the war, many were quite plump, although he remained thin. He had always been thin. They were all thin when they were being starved, but when allowed to eat normally some gained weight. Should we all eat like we are in a concentration camp to stay thin? I have seen a few studies on starvation like this, and they all tend to follow a similar line. Seems like the more starvation (dieting) someone is exposed to, the more they tend to get fat (probably in order to save up for the next famine.) It's more complicated than most people realize. But then most people don't want to read this far. They just want a line or two like "stop eating fat pig" and leave it at that.
Dysphoria, perhaps you misunderstood my statement. Thankfully, you affirmed it at the same time.
The point I was making is that if you stop eating, you lose weight.
Along that line of thought, if you eat less than you usually eat, you will gain less weight than you usually do.
Believe me, I know what it is to not have the "I'm full" light go on. When I was on steroids (for medical purposes, not to become a muscleman), I could eat all day every day and never feel full. Instead, I put myself on a very strict eating regimen and did not allow myself to stray from that. I guarantee you those steroids made me want to eat more than this mysterious "I'm going to make you fat" bacteria.
It's not rocket science. It's not germs tricking you into eating more. I have this thing called a brain, I happen to believe that my brain is probably a bigger influence on what I eat and how much I eat than a single-cell organism in my stomach.
Also, I don't care how much any one weighs. I am not a "fat basher". I don't look at people on the street and think, "Wow, that guy is huge, he must be a waste of life." It is a personal choice, just like my smoking cigarettes is a personal and, unfortunately, stupid choice. But don't try and blame it on anything but yourself, because in the end, only you can fix your problems. It takes willpower and a clear goal, and some people just don't have either.
Your point is that if you stop eating, you lose weight. My point is that if you STOP eating, you DIE, of starvation.
If YOU eat less than you usually do, YOU lose weight. If I eat less than I usually do (say, 1200 rather than 1500 calories) I do not lose weight. I am just very, very hungry and cranky. I have actually fainted twice from dieting, once while in a college class, due to lack of caloric intake. This is not an acceptable price I feel I should have to pay for becoming thinner. And this coming from someone who is very conscious of what I eat, and bicycles to work and home every single day, in addition to exercise classes and other physical hobbies. I have personal choice, I have immense willpower, and yet the weight does not drop off like it should. So, I think maybe it is rocket science (actually, I think biochemistry is a lot more complicated than rocket science as there are a lot more interacting factors in biological than mechanical systems.)
So, amazingly, not all fat people are lazy slobs, with no willpower or goals. I am willing to consider the idea that gut bacteria, or hormones in our food, or pesticides or plastic byproducts or WHATEVER could be contributing to obesity in this country, along with other factors such as activity levels and food choices.
Great: another 'good excuse' for fat people to be fat.
Let he who is without any faults of their own cast the first stone........I take it this means you are the perfect person in every way
There weren't any overweight people in concentration camps.
I think that says a lot about why people who can't lose weight can't lose weight.
No offense, of course.

WOW! I need to order a 90 day supply via mail prescription. LOL.
Seriously, it's what you eat, in moderation, and exercise that affects weight. Everyone should know that by now.
Of course germs can make you fat. That's why I only eat Little Debbie snack cakes
in sealed packages. I also wash it down with a safely capped liter bottle of Mountain Dew.
I'm avoiding those pesky fatso germs.
Please don't call me overweight....I'm just big boned.....and no wisecracks about never seeing
a fat skeleton either ; )
Craig
goooood job man.
Germs are making me fat....yea, that's the ticket.
I can hear my wife now; "Do these germs make me look fat?"
Nutritional changes have probably contributed towards growth of bad bacteria. There are several changes, but I think the consumption of corn and chicken would be one of the significant ones. Oh Yeah!! GERMS! That's the ticket! (Sorry JA, I was thinking the same thing!)
Hey, fat pigs!!! It's not your fault. The government says so.
Americans, listen up....it's 32 oz. Cokes, high fructose corn syrup, fried food, beef, baked goods, in between meal snacks and NO exercise that's making you fat!!!

Why is it ok for "fat people" to be the last acceptable thing for people to make fun of?
Let's see now. Would that be the Glazed Donut germ or the Double Cheeseburger with Super Sauce germ?
I suspect that extended horizontal body alignment in front of a glowing screen will be found to accelerate the negative effect of these "germs".
This is a very good start on a much needed health problem. I think some of the "legal" chemicals hidden in "proprietary" ingredients may be the cause of our health problems with obesity. Great work.
Socialist. What color is your food? Green? Or was it plain chicken breast with white bread.
Oh yeah, It is intended to provoke a response.

Maybe you should smoke more and eat less. Oops that one is already taken.
As I have said in previous posts. You opened the door- you are the next big tax source. Get used to it.
If "germs" is another term for triple cheesburgers then I agree with the headline.
The only thing that makes people over weight is hand to mouth and not enough exercise. Just think about it.
This is a great way not to over eat: before your meal, drink a glass of water.
The germs are just another poor excuse.
With all the odds stacked against us, how anyone manages to stay skinny, is beyond my understanding!
