Kids today can see through all the lies the church espouses. They are way more intelligent and less fearful of the antiquated Catholic Church. Time for Rome to give up its ghosts. They are xenophobic. For instance, they relentlentleely persecute Gays, but Gay is a gender and not the crime of child molestation. They tried to psychologically disarm the world by blaming child sexual abuse on the Gays --- but it was like a firecracker that blew up in their hand.

Who in the world actually believes that condoms will promote rape and violence. What Italy's like an episode of CSI and they really will catch the bad guy with DNA??? I'm a 60 year old woman and I don't believe I've ever heard of condoms promoting violent behavior.
I don't know about you but I have used a lot of them and some of them are really like using nothing at all. They just keep everybody safe and prevent unwanted pregnancies. However, environmentally speaking, they should not be flused down the toilet afterwards.
If the Catholic Church is so against condoms since it prevents conception, then perhaps they would be willing to foot the bill for all the unwanted pregnancies that culminate in birth.

The only time that the catholic church ever spends any money on unwed mothers or wedded mothers is in their orphanages where the either sell the babies to Catholics that pay a fortune, use them for cheap labor, or play hide the salami with them and use them as semen receptacles.

As a long time resident of Greater Boston, I well remember Cardinal Bernard Law. He could barely bring himself to say the word condom, all the while moving child rapists from one parish to another. Now, instead of being imprisoned for pimping he resides at the Vatican in splendor.
This idea of condom vending machines in schools is great. Kids are going to do it regardless so it is so much better if they do it safely. As to the RCC's objection -- who cares a jot what they think? Time for human beings to live in reality and let the old supernatural junk go. Religion is the biggest con job ever committed on people. Life is to be enjoyed. All you need is the golden rule to structure your one and only short life on this planet. Don't waste it on religion folks.

And if you study the history of serial killers, you will most often find out that they grew up in a religiously puritanical, sex is dirty home. So the natural desire for sex conflicts with the idea that sex is dirty. And for a small number of cases, that dirtyness becomes attached to the object of desire - the woman. Presto - serial killing is simply warped minds trying to rid themselves of desire by killing what they see as dirt.
John, One of the things I see as a possibility is girls getting harassed more by teen boys, but maybe not just teen boys.In past articles, I have also,tried to suggest to people that, the bible has given people morality. I have asked people that if we evolved from animals, their was nothing to suggest those early humans, that having sex with 12 year olds girls was wrong. even if your a teen or adult man. Many, have told me that I was wrong. Some have told me that even primitive man can have values. Ok, fine I am not going to debate that. So tell me, why in the 21st century, those primitive values don't exist? Or did they have a better way of birth control? Or a better way of teaching their kids values?
The hypocricy that really gets to me, is all those priests denouncing condoms for teen-agers...when everyone knows perfectly well that they are against condoms for ANYONE. And saying that educators are more interested in the health and hygiene aspects of sex than the spiritual side...well, I would HOPE so. Good grief, no wonder the priests refuse to allow condoms even to Africans who are dying in droves of AIDS...while going on about the sacredness of all human life. We can't neglect that spiritual side, can we?
Cassandra, Aids is not just an African disease, it's pretty much all over the place. I'm not in the RCC or agree with The RCC on many issues. But just like you don't understand why the RCC can't "see" the whole picture. I ask myself how hard it would be for any person to "see" the benefits of using a condom. When they are having a hard time with putting Aids and death together. One more thing, is it only the RCC Africans that are dieing or spreading Aids?
Gab, I remember that the Pope specifically condemned the use of condoms in Africa, where I believe that the AIDS epidemic was especially severe. However, I am sure he condemns the use of condoms anywhere for any reason.
What just befuddles the @!$%# out of me about that, is that the dumb ass people will not use condoms "because the church prohibits is" but they will have extramarital and/or premarital sex??!! Was the church ok with that? And if it is WTF!? :-s If you're gonna sin, at least don't ruin your life and the life of your innocent spouse (or some other innocent party) in the process.

I think the Africans have other cultural issues that keep them from using condoms. I think we should learn about them, try to fully understand them, respect them, and work with them from there.
Cassandra, How long should the African population use condoms? When will kids be able to stop using them? If you tell them that they can only have sex, if they use a condom. It would take self-control to accomplish that, and it would be needed for a lifetime.

Well, if they don't have THAT much self-control, their lifetimes are likely to be very short. As it is, I read that some Africans have been raping virgins, having heard that sex with virgins can cure AIDS. Clearly, a lot of education is needed...starting with the fact that condoms do NOT lead to AIDS, no matter what the Pope told them.
Cassandra, If they don't find a cure for Aids,the hard cold fact is this. To stop the spread of Aids and death is condoms, but condoms is a means of birth control. No children or grandchildren for these kids. Their blood lines stop. One way or another is death for them. No hope if there is no cure. Drug users, and people that just want to get their kicks off, get it, well, maybe there is a little compassion. But my heart breaks for those that get it without no wrong done by them. Can you imagine if Aids existed 3000 yrs ago? Would people have seen the connection between Aids,sex and death?

Eric, There are three main forces that are working against each other.. Human nature , Religion/Spirituality and Education. Every single one of those forces, to work well, needs to be balance, Reading some of peoples comments scare me. Comments made supposedly by Adults. There are those that say it is perfectly fine for Kids to have sex as long as it's consensual and not with adults, but do it safely. People fall in love without having sex. How many stories have we heard of woman having children, thinking that their boyfriends will love them more or would not leave them if they have kids? How many guys think that also? Even some go as far as to have sex, so they won't leave them. There was an article last year,about Aids and STD's being spread in the United States by kids "even" the well educated college kids,something to the affect that 1 out of 2 that have it, don't know they have it.It's been around for how many years now? Most high school kids and college kids know about STDs and what affect condoms can have on preventing it. Kids that supposedly have their future planned out. The witch doctor is using natural habits for the cure of Aids. He was there way, before any modern religion. Will Aids and STDs have the last word, On all the theories out there?
I won't argue that even being more educated prevents these things because some people, despite knowing the risks will take that risk regardless. A lot of it especially teenagers has a lot to do with pressure from guys not to use the condom because it doesn't feel as good. Which is why I am so glad to see the news about female condoms. It really is about time. But you can't go into a country that already has a lot of misinformed people and hand out more misinformation and expect the problem to get better.
Education may not prevent everything in the case of people who are just plain stupid or in the case of rapists but it does those who do care enough about themselves to want to protect themselves.
Is it okay for kids to have sex with each other just because they're kids? No it isn't but it is going to happen no matter what anyone says. Just telling them not to, is not going to cut it and denying them education and protection will only increase the amount of issues those sexually active kids will face.

If a man has to explain to his spouse why he is masturbating then I think they have some serious issues that do not apply to condoms. Masturbation is a perfectly normal thing to do and should require no explanation.
And if you're trying to say boys will not use that line you're wrong. I was a teen aged girl once and heard it then and as a woman I hear it now from men who say the same thing. There are those that will not say it but there are plenty that will.
Eris, history has shown that boys/ men will use anything,lies, rape, pills, alcohol, name it. even the kitchen sink if they can. And even girls have done the same thing. Maybe that is why they came up with the idea of chaperons, pretty much a dead profession.

He was content to say that condoms don't always work so total abstinence is better...although, come to think of it, that would prevent all pregnancies, too.However, nowadays there is AIDS testing, to tell couples if they can try to have children without getting AIDS. Will it reduce the number of babies born in Africa? From what I have heard, that would not be the worst thing that could happen there.
Cassandra, it sounds simple, but it's not, you still have those that have Aids that are very young, and if they have superstitions like you mentioned about the virgins, which I think there was an article about that not to long ago and also sex is not the only way to get it. Plus, if the pope tells them they can't use condoms, even if they are married, which that, in itself, is going beyond what the bible teaches. On the flip side, what's the different if you tell them they can't have sex without it? Both ways is intrusion, even if its done with good intent. It's a big mess and not just in Africa.
To prevent STDs they would have to use condoms only if they are not monogamous - so married people shouldn't need to use them unless one already had HIV and the other doesn't.

I'm not following you. Everyone there doesn't have HIV only a whole lot of them.
People who are HIV positive shouldn't get pregnant or impregnate someone, but I think that is a big problem in their culture (as how many children they have is related to their status as a man or woman? or something like that). As for spreading HIV - monogamous couples do not spread it no matter how much unprotected sex they have. So married couples do not need condoms. If they have HIV they should get fixed (tubal ligation or vasectomy) and then have sex with only each other. Then they still don't spread AIDS. But again the problem is that such things carry a cultural taboo.
Sunnybunny, Humans have a history on Earth, a lot of it is not good. The news that has been coming out of Africa in the last two years, the things they are doing to women and children is Sadistic. The news that has been coming out of parts of India is Sadistic. Even the news in the U.S. with whats been happening to woman and children the last two years is Sadistic. The Vatican has big ones!! They need to clean their own house and when that's done begin to re-examine what their place is in society. They have little credibility with developed nations. Undeveloped nations should not be exposed to the teachings that keep women and children down. Men and women are created equally by God and then torn apart by teachings of many religions that tries to keep one above the other, but I am transgressing. I would rather have kids use a condom and have some protection against disease and an unwanted birth than the other way around.
