Why doesn't she just donate that money to a worthy cause?
Who gives a rats ass? Can anyone imagine running out to a Gene Counselor to see if their ancestors were crazy! Would that has stopped Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot, I don't think so! Now there will be criminals whose lawyers will say that their mothers should have went to gene counselors! And the list goes on and on and on!
If you had children and mental illness runs in your family wouldn't you want to know if there is a possibility that your child may come down with schizophrenia? You probably don't know anyone who has it but it is an illness that is not curable and the people who have it live a hellish life.
Mapping genes may further science and help give thought to whether parents want to have a child biologically or adopt a child instead. Carrying genes for debilitating illnesses should give one pause when they are looking to have a baby. Who in their right mind would want to pass on these things to an innocent child and then to have to watch that child descend into hell because of a defect on a gene?
This is about the last piece of information I'd want my health insurance carrier to get their hands on! If the price comes down to something reasonable, I would think that many insurers would use the information to pick and choose their "risk". What better way to prove pre-existing condition?
The science is fascinating though, and I'm sure this will help a lot of people who feel they are at risk for passing on bad genes.
I was wondering the same thing. Will this kind of information end up being used to screen people for jobs, insurance, lending, used in courts and by law enforcement. Will it be used by landlords? After all when it comes to cost control and profit risk management is often part of the equation. The past may be a sign of what is to come. In history every technical advance seems to end up used for two purposes. One to help people and another to oppress or harm them. The inventor of dynamite did not intend it to blow people up. The inventors of the combustion engine and autombiles probably never dreamed of using them as tanks in warfare. The invention of some drugs was not intended for abuse. The list goes on for ever. Will this latest new science/technology also be misused some how?

I would think that all these celebrities that are doing this are probaly using thier money to change thier family history so they are tied to someone famous at sometime in history they are using the genome sequence to give them confirmation on thier finds but I would have to belive most of these finds are manipulated in the stars favor no one wants to come from a drunk but they all claim they did at one time or another. what a bunch of phonies

What does it matter if you find a genetic cause for a disease if you have no health care to pay for treatment?
