As hundreds of injured survivors of the Haiti earthquake overwhelmed Florida hospitals in January, state officials pleaded with the federal government for basic information.
Haiti quake victims put strain on Fla. hospitals

Hey, weren't we supposed to be sending medical care to THEM, rather than sacrificing our own?
It's a third world country that has always relied on outside help and will always need it!
"serious flaws in the nation's disaster-response capabilities" ---- I cry BULL! If this was a national disaster the needs would be addressed nationwide instead of just using the resources of Florida. We don't have to take these people in and definitely should NOT do so at the expense of our citizens.
How much would Haiti do for us if the tables were turned? Let them see to their own needs and we'll see to ours.
And don't even start crying to me that I have an obligation to the less fortunate. Tired of hearing it. Don't agree. Never will. I see to my own needs and always have ... get your hand out of my pocket!
Great!!! American citizens can't get healthcare yet a bunch of poor haitians get to get a free flight here and once here get all the free healthcare the American tax payer can pay. WTF is wrong with that picture? I feel bad for them but damn man enough is enough! here we are going underas a country yet we get to bare the brunt of every country that experiences a disaster.
If they can give top notch treatment to these poor broke ass haitians, they can sure give top notch healthcare to the American poor and out of work citizen. But then again they're poor black haitians that don't know what hard work and building a functioning society is. I say we send all the haitians back. let them take care of their own.
Gee whiz, according to BHO, our health care system is such a P of S, why are they being brought here? Why not send them to Canada or Great Britian, since they have such superior health care to ours?
Who is going to make sure they leave??? We don't need any more of our resources going to anyone.
I agree. Why is it OUR responsibility to absorb the costs of caring for hundreds (by now, thousands) of foreigners? We don't even provide decent care for our OWN poor and indigent, and we are arrogantly playing Lord Bountiful for people who were stupid enough to build their houses on top of a known geological fault line? Port-au-Prince should have been relocated decades ago. And how will we ever get all these people back home? Once here, they won't want to go back! We can't continue to absorb the surplus population of the Third World without deteriorating into Third World conditions here at home. We need to help people in their own countries, not bring them here! Haiti was a French colony: let France take the lead on rebuilding Haiti (and let's hope they won't be dumb enough to rebuild on the fault line.)
Yeah not sure why it is the responsibilty of the U.S. to pay for this.....
It's not. But they are black, and if we don't do it, we are racists.
Here in the city of Tampa where I'm at they are turning people away who arrive at the emergency dept. The taxpayer is picking up the bill for these people but we can't even use our own hospital.....There's gonna be big time lawsuits.
What should we expect with a black president? To pay for poor black haitian people who live on handouts.
When all the Somalian entered the US as refugees a few years ago, was a black president in office? Didn't think so. Don't make this a race issue. Humanitarians try to help all people, regardless of color. If you want to lay blame, blame politicians - both white and black.
Stop making assumptions about people because of what you see or read. If an earthquake devastates your area I bet you would be looking for a handout also. I see Hatians doing what they can to help themselves - from going to the countryside to get produce to finding materials to make broom and baskets to sell. Like the USA or any other nation, there are lazy people, but most people are hardworking. I don't think you would have the spirit to survive if a disaster hit because you are too comfortable here in the USA.
PeopleFirst, it seems you believe in everything you see and hear, at least everything you want to see and hear. Get real. Most Haitians wouldn't know an honest days work if it jumped up and slapped them in the face!
Until you visit Haiti or know an Haitian, you cannot judge. I do know Haiti and Haitiana and a whole lot of other nations and their people, so I can tell you first hand that you are wrong. You live in your little cocoon and think you know other people. Have you ever left your backyard? When you live in other cultures, come talk to me.
I bet you didn't give a solitary dime to the Chilean people. Just like the rest of the black people from America. The fact is we don't want to come talk to you because you're too damn selfish.
I have never seen such pure hatred for a fellow man. It doesn't matter if they are black, white, puerto rican, asian or what their skin color is. The simple fact that this country experience a DEVASTATING loss is enough to reach out and help them. They didn't ask for the ground to shake so violently that it KILLED hundreds of thousands of people. They didn't ask to loose limbs. They didn't ask to have many of their family die. They didn't ask to make a energy bar last for days because that was all they had to eat. They didn't ask to be born in to such poverty. In America our situation can NEVER compare to what they go through everyday. Would you have rathered another 100,000 more die because we turned them away from our American hospitals? Our Church has a Haitian congregation and they are an amazing group of people. They are proud, hard working, God loving Christians who in the face of all this tragedy with their family members they have lost they can still sing praises for savings the others. They are thankful that we as a nation have been able to help. It makes me sad, disgusted and ashamed that so many Americans have given our country such grief for helping them. I can only hope that some degree of tragedy never falls upon you and your family or community where you live and you need help. Would you want nobody to help you? Such disgrace.
Unbelievable. The Public Health Trust in Dade County, which operates the Jackson Memorial Hospital system, announced last week that due to budget shortfalls and fiscal mismanagement it is closing two major regional hospitals. With Jackson as the hospital-of-last-resort for most county residents, the strain of delivering costly health care without getting paid by the consumer has created a $230 MILLION disaster. Now, the influx of Haitian earthquake victims who are unable to contribute a penny to the cost of their treatment is placing an incredible burden on an already overburdened system. Hospitals are closing as the need for care increases. Hospitals are laying off workers as the demand for health care employees is rising nationwide. Unbelievable.
Can't Haiti take care of their own? Or are we still the hospital of the world. Hell we can't even take care of our own....
Unless you don't care how much it costs then you just pay and relax....they rest are just nervous all the time.
There ya go Florida. Trying to depend on the Federal Government to provide any assistance and over site. Wonder how that whole massive take over of Health Care is going to go...Hmmm....
I am not saying we should refuse to help the Haitian people, mind you. I am just saying we should help them in Haiti. And we should be sure the help DOES get to the people...not the corrupt and greedy rulers.
This is ridiculous. mrtvtteacher got's it right. Why in hell does the US, I mean us, have to pay for something in some other dam country. It's their problem not ours so let them deal with it. Not to be a dick or anything, but we got our own dam problems. And they say they want to enact a 'National ...', can't quite remember it, but it's not a NATIONAL problem. It's an INTERNATIONAL problem. Let the UN or NATO deal with this problem. We are in debt as is, the government spends more as I write this, and we continue to spend like it's going out of style. Plus, have yall heard about the $5.4million being spent by Hillary Clinton on WINE glasses? OMG this is incredible. This government is OUT OF CONTROL! Us Americans need salvation from our greedy politicians. I smell a Rebellion in the works. We need a direct democracy, this is the only way to have EVERYBODYS voice heard.
OOPS, sorry folks! This just in:
Jackson Health System is still in critical condition, but at least it's not closing down hospitals - yet.
Miami-Dade's largest public hospital system announced Monday a new plan that scraps the idea of closing two community hospitals and laying off 4,500 employees.
Our disaster capabilities are quite sufficient, thank you. When we start "IMPORTING", then it's a different story. Has the Federal Government ever come through with REAL assistance for these hospitals, or has that been another empty promise?
We should not have taken them in, in my opinion, without guarantees from the UN that these hospitals would receive financial assistance from the International community. Charity begins at home, Mr. Obama.
The end result will be that Floridians will lose hospitals and good medical care because the hospitals will be broke. How sad is that?
Who will foot the billed to send them back? They best send them back! As I can't pay to fund their needs.
I do not think they are going back....by now they have a nice apartment, welfare checks and all the free medical they need..
After reading the article, I wondered how many of them will actually go back and how many will stay here illegally (and live off the taxpayers, of course). This is ridiculous. We can't afford to take care of our own people, medical-wise, and yet we just import in thousands more? Who is paying for this, Mr. Obama?
Send them back??? you must be dreaming.. I'm sure that now they're here they'll claim they need ongoing care or political asylum.
Yeah and they get to vote Obama in for his second term. Because he paid for all their health care and gave them a place to live and nice chlothes OH yeah and free heath care for life because of course they are all disabled now. So you know they are not going back to Haiti because they are lawful voting members of the US.
jbird, those wine glasses were purchased for American embassies, which was a valid expense.. The equally valid criticism was that the money went to a factory in Switzerland.
Let them drink from a D%^m Dixie Cup. IT is not a valid expense. Sorry are all the people who lost thier jobs are they drinking wine from nice wine cups I think not. I suppose you think they retards from AIG need a couple extra billion apiece for the stand up job they did.
You are going to need those "french wine glasses" to keep a rosy outlook!
the state blaming the feds.....the feds blaming the state.......it's Bush's fault.......why isn't the press blaring this outrage for all to read?
I have no job or health insurance. I messed up my knee to the point I believe I will need a surgery to repair my knee. Yet all these Hatians are getting free health care. Where can I go to have my knee reparied for free? Anyone?
Haiti? or maybe Cuba.
yeppi , I agree , no mention of them going back to haiti , abama made sure of that , each will have their own welfare worker , caregiver , apt , food , meds ,schooling's pd for by Americans while we rebuild an make their homes better than before for even others , cripes .
we wont ever know the true number of them sent here either .
Impeach the fool ,
Keep in mind that the order of succession goes Biden then Pelosi. Obama may be bad but those two would make him look like a saint!
The US has been helping other nations since forever. If that's the case, every president ever elected to office would be impeached.
I understand the anger over this issue. However, instead of blaming the president or the people getting our help, how about blaming the big business medicine has become. We have enough to help ourselves, but because of greed, many are going without.
No I blame obama for digging in my pocket and every other working american. All the hosp. bills and the trans. cost for 30+thousand haitians is going to be exspensive. I feel being the disaster never happened in America the only money the USA should give is DONATED money from we the people. Obama is turning into a dictator hmmm another hitler.
You are a fool to think this won't happen if there was a white president in office. My state is full of Somalians and it wasn't a black president in office when that happened!
Do you really know how our democracy work? You need to take a history/civic lesson. Obama cannot do anything by himself. This country have laws that eveyone have to abide by. Our constitution built in checks and balances to make sure that no one has that ultimate power to ruin this economy. We all contributed to it with our greed and lavish lifestyle, living beyond our means. Our greed have not affected Americans, but others worldwide who were robbed blind by greedy Americans. I don't have anything against Bush, be he wanted everyone to have a piece of the American pie and people got in over their heads to enjoy a piece of that pie. Let's blame our own stupidity for being led astray. You should all watch the documentary "House of Cards" to see how we have affected the world economy.
Then why did he promise everyone "change we can believe in"? You're just biased because you're black. You know you never lifted a finger to help the Chileans. Everyone knows why.
ForwardObserver--you blame Obama digging into your pocket???? How about a useless war in Iraq that has cost $20billion a DAY since its inception? How many years has it been going on now? Did Obama start that one, dummy? If it weren't for that ridiculous fiasco there, we would NOT be in the shape we are today. Thank you, Georgie---is what you should be saying.
And "why" is the the American taxpayers problem? Let Haiti deal with their own problems. We have enough problems with health care as it is, just ask Odumba.
A strain you say......? No, that can't be. This would not portend what will be the case (on just the volume factor alone) should the Marxist Totalitarians who are attempting to destroy the USA violate the Constitution and pass the "health care" bill. Or would it?
Hey, why not free "health care" for all 3rd worlders? Their racist brutha would approve.
Heil Maobama.
Ha it is Bush's fault. This is a picture of Obamacare. How does it look?
"Haiti quake victims put strain on Fla. hospitals"
If we end up with ObamaCare we can balance it out by straining the Haitian hospitals.
What Haitian hospitals? The ones we will build there with taxpayer money?
It is quite interesting that, after all the help they gave, and were expected to give, the state of Florida got hammered for not doing enough! What a typical response from people who were not on the ground and having to pay the bills.
Wonder if the ones who are so upset about this are going to send money to help pay for all of these needy people.
I knew this article would bring out all of you racist Obama haters. I do agree though that it should NOT be the responsibility of any local, state, or federal agency to cover the cost of treating any foreigner (disaster or not.) And you do notice that these earthquake victims were apparently only taken to public owned hospitals, where the taxpayers have to foot the bill. Did not see any mention in the article of any PRIVATE hospitals accepting any of these "victims." We can't afford to provide universal health care to our own taxpaying citizens, but we can afford to bring in disaster victims from other countries and treat them at our expense? Being a humanitarian is one thing, but as an old saying goes, charity begins at home.
Dude I don't have to be racist to hate someone. I am an equal opportunity hater of stupidity which goes across all races.
Why don't we send the Haiti quake victims to Military hospitals instead of burdening the states. After all, there are plenty of Air Force, Army, and Navy bases in the US. This is a federal decision, not a state. Let all of the US taxpayers foot the bill.
Why doesn't other countries take in the Haitians, why does it always have to be the United States?
Somebody sent a fleet to Haiti, took control of the airport, deployed thousands of soldiers, claimed an "all-out effort" to help, airlifted thousands more to Florida, and promised 100 million as an initial gift for Haiti
then all the other countries learnt that the U.S. would handle all this mess, and they returned home happily appreciating the value of a Nobel-prize winner.
That's it~
I am amazed how egotistical we Americans can be. It is obvious that the US media will not tell us about what other countries are doing to help Haiti - this just makes us look like the golden child. If you don't have access to international news that is not US-biased, do some research of your own. For example, Canada pledge $12 million to build temporary homes in Haiti and Haitian orphans are being adopted by Canadian families. We are whining about helping others and the Canadians are urging their government to do more for Haiti. Go figure.
Is there any one in government that reads this.THAT CARES AT ALL WHAT THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY THINK.
No, there isn't.
LOL what a question!.
The US has become the dumping ground for the unwanted garbage of the world. I am so frustrated that we can take the whole world in, but we cannot take care of our own people. We will be dealing with the scum of Haiti for many years to come.
The usa sent freed slaves to haiti so in other words we have been dealing with them here for a long time. I don't know who takes after who however there is no difference between the blacks here and the ones in haiti they all contribute nothing Now distribution is another story as finding a city block that don't have crips or bloods slinging crack is hard to find.
