Moviegoers say they would buy healthy snacks

Going to the movies is not about yogurt, apples, and health food! It's about buttered popcorn and soda. Police the schools and everywhere else, But leave the movie theatres out of it! It is my only place I go to eat junk..
Unless I misread the article I don't think they are going to remove the junk food. They are just going to start offering healthy options too.
Overall I think it's a great idea...I personally enjoy munching on carrots while watching a movie...however I can't imagine the prices will be reasonable. I can imagine paying 4 bucks and ending up with 10 carrot sticks and some dip...even if the junk food prices aren't reasonable either I at least get a tub of popcorn the size of my head for 5 bucks.
I agree with "Dave" - it's all about the smell of the popcorn. However, I would buy snacks at the theatre if they were CHEAPER and SMALLER. The "small" popcorn and "small" soda together are now too big for one person to carry, and each costs $4.00. Who needs that much?!
I don't go to the movies at all anymore. I bought a big screen tv, I have netflix and so endith the waste of money to run down to pay about $50 for the 3 of us to go watch a movie, get some drinks, just to hear some idiot whispering, or some kid banging the back of my chair. Nope, movie theaters are a thing of the past for us. They are like Block Buster, dinosaurs to me. We, as a family have a much better time watching movies together on our new TV. Also, for the times our tastes are different, we each have a cheap, but efficient dvr player in each of our rooms for solitude too. The other thing about theaters, most of the newer ones are like climbing Mt Everest to get a seat. Quite dangerous in the dark if you happen to be late. Plus with a DVR, you can fast forward through all the junk. At a theater, you can't.
Sounds like you'vve never turned around and threatened the kid kicking on the back of your chair....try it sometime. It's fun.
Don't forget the hot dogs...between Costco hot dogs and chili dogs at home, they're almost neccessary at the movies if you haven't eaten anything for four hours and are about to sit through two hours of previews/movie. Movie popcorn is good, but then you get that whole dry-mouth feeling....so you have to go get another gallon of soda.
I'm never getting a big screen tv, because I don't want tv/ dvd watching to be my entire life, along with sitting in front of a computer. So, I am grateful to be able to go to a theater and experience a movie that way. However, it is true that 10 dollars for a ticket alone is no joke, if you want some popcorn and a soda with that. So I make it a point that as long as I am paying for myself, I will only see movies that are worth seeing in a theater for the special effects. "Chick flicks" and the like can be watched later on.
I think movie ticket prices have made many of us stay at home movie watchers. Maybe they will price trhemselves out of business someday. Matinees can help us who can't afford the $10 tickets : )
I'd like more choices at the theater for snacks as long as their not priced out of the range of most people which they more than likely will be. But, honestly, I've had a few "new" experiences at theaters that has made me sit up and take notice... Went to an older theater, had been renovated, had a few seats taken out and table tops put in so that 2 people could sit on either side of it. The snack bar had popcorn, pop & candy but, they also had pizzas (not just a slice) that two people could split. Wine by the bottle, beer, hot dogs and a mini veggie tray or a meat and cheese tray!!! It was a second run theater...so, we saw a great movie, had pizza and beer, and the entire night only cost about $30 for 2 people. Not bad for a date night and all you had to do was throw the pizza box and the plastic beer cups in the trash on your way out! I can wait a couple of weeks for a movie to hit the second run theater, pay the reduced price and have the big screen experience for that kind of a place!!! It was great! Went to another theater, again, second run. It had dogs, hamburgers, burritos, nachos, french fries, and salads. No wine or beer but, any kind of possible soft drink or coffee drink you can imagine, plus juice for a very reasonable price. If you went to that theater for a "Tuesday Date Night" you got 2 tickets, 2 pops, 1 tub of popcorn & one box of candy for $10! How you gonna beat that? There are cheaper ways to see a movie than in an over priced first run theater with outrageously over priced concessions. Theaters would make a lot more on concessions and ticket buyers if they would lower the price and think VOLUME sales instead of trying to make all the money off of one family going to see the movie. It's really gotten out of control. Hollywood ISN'T helping, either. Higher costs, actors demanding higher contracts, and the studios wanting to make sure they make a profit on every movie is what is really pricing tickets out of everyman's hands. I have friends and family members who will NOT go to a theater to see a film because of the overpriced tickets to begin with, makes no difference what they sell inside. My sister, who used to go to see a film at the theater at least once a week hadn't been to a movie in a theater for 12 years when I drug her to see The Dark Knight with me instead of going alone. She told me that theaters were just priced out of her budget. She can buy 3 movies on DVD or rent 15 for the price she was paying to take herself and her 2 daughter so a film... Movies used to be cheap entertainment for the masses. Now, movies in a theater with the big screen, special effects, 3-D glasses, and of course, concessions are now for only a priviledged few. Especially if you have no second run theater in your community. Most of the average Americans cannot afford to pay $50 for 3 people to go to a film once a month, let alone, once a week! It's just gotten out of control, just like tickets to a sporting event or a concert. The average fan will never see any of those things in their lifetime more than once, if even then. Sad state of affairs when only the rich can afford to be entertained. Doesn't say much for the "entertainment" industry, no matter what kinds of foods/snacks they sell.
There are much healthier ways to pop popcorn than the way movie theatres do. Movie theatres use popcorn that is of very low grade, has been actually crossed with cattle corn or field corn to make it pop very large but the hulls are very thick and tough. The hulls split in half and become wedged in your teeth and are very rough on the digestive system. The popcorn varieties contain GMO's. Why not go back to the heirloom varieties of popcorn that are tender, pop it in a healthy oil like grape seed or sunflower oil and let the true flavor of the corn come through.
Air popped popcorn generally is very tough and results in many "old maids". By the time the kernel becomes hot enough to pop, too much moisture has been extracted from the kernel.
Just an idea of how theatre goers could still enjoy the smells and taste of real popcorn without the health risks.
