Although not a constitutional expert, I think the law violates the commerce clause. the mandates are not a tax (permitted under article 1, section 8 and the 16th amendment) which is legal as it applies to all; it is not social security as one can not help being born and growing older hence it applies to all. this is a mandate to purchase which is beyond the powers granted to the federal government
This completely violates our freedoms as Americans. This isn't land of the everyone-should-have-the-exact-same, it's the land of the FREE. There's a difference.
This "I want" because "I don't have" is getting old. It's one thing to help the poor. But it's not the government's job to make sure everyone has the exact same things as everyone else.
WEW, Thankgoodness Minnesota is not one of the nutty states. It is kind of like the stimulus money and some govenors were going to refuse it. Now, that is totally insane. And trying to block health care from coming to their state is just about as nutty. If only people would do a little book work, reading, adding and subtracting they would find these bills are not going to ruin their lives, but rather perahps bring them out of the brink of disaster.

We have been required to purchase a federal retirement plan (social security) for years. It is legal and it is right.

From your post it is apparent that if you are relying on Social Security for your retirement it is clear why you would want the government to control your health care.... you can't provide for yourself and you need to leach off of others!!!
Please God, let them win this case! Fast-track it to the SCOTUS while they are still pi$$ed about being slammed by Obama at the State of the Union Address

If this is illegal because it mandates the purchase of insurance or pay a penalty, then Social Security is also illegal. All employees and employers must pay for the Social Security with the FICA tax. If the FICA tax is not paid, penalty is assessed. The Republicans are just sore losers.
Let me get this straight......we're passing a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president who also hasn't read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke.
What could possibly go wrong????
