Don't laugh at the others...how about us? anyone knows about the rate of our own country? Look at our young generations, eating junk foods, drinking sodas, playing video games or on internet for hours...that is something we should learn from the news and think aabout our sons and daughters...I see so many fat boys and fat girls, fat men, fat women around me...focus on the issues...find out why and deal with it...what's your weight..? Are youu over your weight? Is your blood sugar normal? Under 130???? Think more...
I'm not surprised. Have been going to China for the past 20 years now and I've noticed more and more young people moving to the big cities to find work. As they find work they also make more money and thus eat more. They are also more stressed out. Also, fewer young people ride bikes and now own a car or take public transit. They have become very sedentary, on their Blackberries, cell phones, internet cafes, eating fast foods and less healthy. The amount of rice they eat is negligible which can cause your A1C to skyrocket if you eat too much or don't burn it off. A normal balanced meal of chinese greens, fish, sauteed pork or chicken with a 1/2 cup of steamed rice will not cause overweight. But too many burgers, fries, cokes, pies, ice cream etc., well I'm not surprised.
See, panicked conservatives, you can still get fat and eat crappy food with Socialism, you have to admit, its starting to look like a better option than it used to.
I'm in China now so I decided to ask my wife and her best friend about the matter. Her best friend works for the Chinese government. One of her previous government jobs was selling insurance.
This is my understanding of the system: If theyyou work for bus companies, utility companies, cell phone companies, banks or a host of other companies that are government owned the company gives them a certain amount of money to help pay for insurance. This money is incorporated into the amount of money they get paid for working. Chinese workers get paid monthly, not weekly. If you don't work for the government or a state owned company, or if you have your own private business, you must purchase your health insurance from the government or insurance companies, the government and insurance companies each offering different plans. They can buy a year's worth of insurance, two years, five years, etc, etc, etc. It's my understanding that the insurance companies are owned by the government.
The Chinese people are savers. They don't buy things they don't need. It's my understanding they save approximately one third of their salaries. Chinese people don't get paid by the hour. They pay for their insurance out of these savings. If you don't have insurance you're out of luck unless you have cash to pay the doctor or the hospital. No cash, no health care.
I have a garbage back and neck. When I arrived in China the first of March I paid 600 RMB to a local doctor, which is approximately $85.00 U.S. money, for ten treatments of back and neck traction, acupuncture, massage, heat therapy and moxibustion. Each treatment lasts about seventy to eighty minutes. That's so cheap it's laughable.
Medical care after retirement, which is age 60 for men, works like this. If they want a pension after retirement, they must pay 2,000 RMB or more to the government each year they are working. I am assuming that figure is for those at a younger age and I imagine the payments would be higher if they started working at a later age. Upon retirement, the government pays them so much money a year. They use part of this retirement money to pay for health insurance. If they don't purchase health insurance after they are retired they have no insurance and then must pay cash if they want medical treatment. There is no social system such as Medicare and Medicaid. There are no government payments for nursing homes.
That's my understanding from the horse's mouth. You must also realize that Chinese families take care of each other. Most of them, at retirement, have already paid off their homes. The children take care of their parents financial needs. Siblings take care of siblings. Grandparents take care of the grandchildren while the parents are working. Working children of working parents give a sizable portion of their earnings to their parents for the parents' needs.
In China, if you are too lazy to work you get nothing from the government. There are no programs for food stamps, housing assistance, welfare, etc, etc, etc. If you are too physically or mentally handicapped to work it's my understanding the government will provide for your care if and when your parents or grandparents are incapable of doing so.
I don't believe this article. I've been to all parts of China, Sichuan Provice, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Kaiping, Toishan, up the Yangtze, etc. The Chinese have something to fall back on, that is, their traditional Chinese diet of rice, veggies, meats, seafood, herbs, etc. They see KFC and McDonald's as something exciting, western and they feel cool when they eat it. When they realize how uncool it is to eat western they can fall back to the traditional diet. We, in the USA, have no traditional diet. We're being beaten over the heads by companies putting out false food labels to make a quick buck. I would seriously question this "study" and the 14 cities where they did the study. Just goto Beijing and Shanghai and count the number of fat people you see on the street and that will tell you how accurate this "study" is.
Stop picking on China! America has been doing the same thing that China has been doing for the last 10 years, on many aspects. Including trying to make each other look bad. Stop it media!!
Unfortunately, now greedy, heartless multinational corporations like Abbott Labs, Bayer, Schering-Plough and others who manufacture blood glucose meters have now found a NEW FRONTIER to conquer. Believe me, they will exploit every last dollar of profit out of the huge Chinese market.
Just think of all the BILLIONS of meters, test strips, glucose tablets, and other supplies that diabetics need that are soon going to be sold in China.
Schering Plough is no longer there, it was sold to Merck. :-(
I am just pondering how true this article really is. I toured China last year to Beijing, Xian and some other cities. I never saw a single fat Chinese.
Anyone here know what a C.A.F.O. is? A concentrated animal feeding operation. Thanks to Monsanto and big Ag who claim to feed the world, are really killing us for a profit.
Mega dairies, mega hog farms, poultry.............
Anyone watch Food Inc.?
Find out what pink slime is and I promise you will never eat McDonalds, Burger King and you will not allow your kids to eat a school lunch ever again.
In Beijing Airport, while I was waiting, I went upstairs to the food court, I had choices such as, Mac, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC, etc, I got so confused and I thought that I was in the US. Nevertheless I ordered an ice cream cone, full of the "healthy" transfat & cholesterol and when I gulped it down, it felt so yummy and I felt so good........
China and the US, two evil twins not only economically conjoined but also have the same disease. Marvelous and Congratulations to both.
I'm a Type II diabetic and it sucks. I have to think about everything I eat. I take meds 2x a day and a shot at bedtime. I'll have it for the rest of my life and I have to worry about complications the main one is blindness. The problem with diabetes is that there are really no symptoms. The bottom of my feet get a little numb often but other than that there aren't any other indications. Sticking my fingers 3x a day sucks too. I only test once a day now. When I get up in the morning. Since I'm taking meds weather my sugar is high or low doesn't matter as I don't change the pills. It's just the shot at night that gets varied. I love cake too.
Holy cow! I never thought I'd live to see Chinese "balloon" babies. I thought they were all short and thin and ate mostly fish and veggies. I guess McDonald's is on the menu these days...
Maybe it's all that white rice they accompany with their meals? Rice has a high glycemic index, and is something that diabetics are told to eat in very small quantities.
That is a suprise to me! I don't see to many large chinese people + they eat a lot of rice. I guess they are starting to eat more fast food..
White rice is pretty much a refined sugar. I guess the real difference between the past and today is portion size.
Do you live in China? This study was about Chinese adults in China, not Asians in America who you assume are Chinese.
more bounce to the ounce..perhaps, they'll end up in high places like the Old Chinese Emperor's of Greatness...
Affluence'll do that. They keep going out for American.
YES!!!!!! Now maybe their gymnasts will be fat and we can beat them!!!!!

What you have seen in Chinese just provies China are getting more affluent. So anyone still suggesting Chinese live on $2 a day is in his dream.
See, panicked conservatives, you can still get fat and eat crappy food with Socialism, you have to admit, its starting to look like a better option than it used to.
LOL.
hey maybe its something in the air.
Does China have national health care? Just wondering?
