Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers said. The comments that could ignite heated discussions among victims and advocates who may think blaming overweight people for getting a disease is unfair.

Already have. Stopped eating processed food and anything "made by man". Added more fruit & vegetables to the diet. Exercise 4 Xs a week - vigourously. I"m 46 and feel better than I did in my 30s.
I am a breast cancer survivor, and have dropped 60 pounds, exercise regularly, eat like you, and reduced alcohol considerably. Regardless of effects on breast cancer, folks could improve their lifestyle considerably by doing what you say - no or little processed food, fresh fruits and veggies, hormone free meat, etc. It will help your heart, reduce risks of diabetes, and you will just plain feel better. As a friend of mine said last night in a Weight Watcher's meeting to a woman who had just lost 20 pounds - go to the grocery and lug around a 20 pound bag of dog food for a while - you will see how hard it is!!
Good job Suzanne & tj! I am 47 and being diagnosed with Diabetes and then the scare of a heart attack was enough to make me realize that i had to make some changes. I have lost 87 lbs in the past 2 years with no drugs or diet plan to follow, except what i made up myself. After struggling with my weight all my life, I now look and feel better than ever and have reversed several health problems such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and my diabetes meds have been cut from 4 down to 1 pill a day. If I can do it, anyone can. Though I don't believe being over weight is the cause of all diseases, it can certainly add to it, and better to do what we can to try to avoid cancer and other diseases. Breat cancer is in my family nd i don't know if I have lessened my chances of getting it, but I know I will be stronger to fight it now.
This is just another jump-on-the-bandwagon thing. My sister had breast cancer and she was a size 8, slim and trim. My mother was a size 16 and she didn't get breast cancer. I think certain people don't want to deal with the complexities of getting breast cancer and would rather be superior and condescending to the victims. I mean, are they saying don't eat GMO food? Are they saying don't work in or near a dry cleaning establishment? (Does drycleaning your clothes expose you to perc?) Are they saying don't breathe polluted air or drink city water with all the hormones released and concentrated in it? Don't drink coffee? Don't eat chicken or eggs or any other animals reared with mega hormones? Those industries would go ape - lawsuits up the whatnot. Come, on folks.... Is the health insurance industry going to use this new 'info' (read opinion) to deny women coverage or treatment because they are overweight? Talk about yelling fire.
Well, the article said reducing occurrence by one third, not 100%. There are many causes of breast cancer, including genetics, etc. Just because eating well and exercising doesn't give you a free pass on breast cancer doesn't mean it isn't a smart thing to do.
Citing one example of a thin woman getting cancer while an overweight person did not is ridiculous. I am a size 2, exercise regularly, eat whole foods, don't smoke, had my first child at age 20, and guess what?! Breast cancer.
If a person can reduce their chance of getting cancer, and feel better at the same time, then why not? The study doesn't say that you won't get cancer because you are thin, but that you can reduce your risk factors. I agree with tjcumming. And for those who are working on eating better and losing weight...CONGRATULATIONS! I know how difficult it is now that I haven't been able to exercise as much, the pounds are creeping on. Must..go..to..gym!
I have already lost 40 pounds and have 30 or 40 more to go. I have stopped eating fast food and have switched to a healthier lifestyle, including exercise and haven't felt this good in twenty years. It really makes a difference. Being fat is not healthy nor is it good for you in any way. Lose weight and you will feel great.
Any new information is valuable in the fight against such diseases. It is the way the information is used that can be hurtful or harmful especially in regards to health insurance. No one should be blamed for having breast cancer, prostate cancer or any other disease--no one wants to be sick or go through chemo/radiation. Certainly, we don't want information for a healthier lifestyle kept quiet, when it might make the difference between disease and health. I always want to know.
You need to avoid as many environmental hazards as you can; eating natural foods, exercising, and staying away from drive thru lanes, highways, drycleaning, any cleaning or home products that are toxic (paint, polyurethane, even laundry and cleaning supplies, the pans you cook with, microwaves...), filtering your water....the list goes on. Americans have lived the "fat" life in their cars, eating garbage, and polluting our planet with nary a thought to the consequences. I am trim, have always been active, but I am a cancer survivor and mine is not estrogen-based. I believe the cause of so much cancer is my generation's exposure to all of the carcinogens that were not present in my parents' generation. If you care, be aware!!
Air fresheners and scented candles can be added to that list; microwave in glass, not plastic (no matter the number) or ceramic (paint).
Anyone else have something to add? I'm sure there's much I hadn't considered!
I am 47, slim, pretty fit. BRCA postitive with a breast lump. If changing my diet, continuing to exercise and increasing it even, will help me to be a healthy grandma one day then why wouldn't I? How selfish would it be for me to only consider my wants instead of being able to be alive and healthy for my own grown kids and theirs? Sounds like a no-brainer to me!
The more control we can retain over scary, unpredictable things, like ilnesses (esp. cancer) the better we feel as individuals and as a whole. Cancer is a very complex disease with many factors that are uncontrolable, some factors that may be manageable, and other factors that may never seem to have any rhyme or reason. As our knowledge increases regarding specific contributing elements I definitely think we should change behavior accordingly. Especially those of us who have chosen to bring children into this world. Why wouldn't someone take all the credible facts and do whatever is possible to increase their odds of health and decrease their risk factors? Its almost irresponsible not to do so. But its a very fragile construct to praise health and diet reform as a preventive tool without, on the other hand, dishing out blame or a 'unhealthy/uncaring' stigma to those unfortunate people with breast cancer.
Absolutely. I have several friends who are survivors, but they had a heck of a bad time. We (my husband and I) are slim, eat mostly veggies from our garden, wild-caught salmon, and chicken and eggs not shot up with hormones and all that junk, and walk so I feel we are pretty healthy in our 70's. We try, and not having to take meds is a great thing also. We are very thankful, and wish the best for those with problems. None of our friends were overweight but cancer ran in their families.
I am 68 walk briskly 3.6 3mph at least 4 times a week eat plenty of fruit and stay away from fried foods. When I can walk outside 2-6 miles everyday/ Feel great don't look my age or so I am told and also play golf in the summer 5 days a week. I agree not only will you feel better but you are lowering your chances of breast cancer. Not a bad way to go about it This makes me even more motivated to continue my life style.
I would and I did. Besides diet and exercise, I am 100% positive that my breast cancer episode 15 years ago was caused largely by sleep deprivation including a 3 hour daily commute.
I would never subject myself to that again, and urge others who are deliberately depriving themselves of sleep reconsider!
I'm stunned at the ignorance of the MSNBC article about avoiding up to a third of all breast cancer cases.
Has anyone been reading lately?
Breast cancer is a vitamin D deficiency disease and up to 80% of all cases can be avoided by maintaining healthy levels. Read the information at Grassroots Health and show it to your doctors. If they have not informed you of this then you better think about finding one who knows.
Vitamin D supplementation will reduce overall cancer rates by at least half- and probably much more. This isn't some johnny come lately vitamin claim- "vitamin D" is a steroid and has nothing to do with the former.
Read up on it at: Vitamin D Council and for god's sake get your serum D level to at least 50 ng/ml- and keep it there- year round!
To read a major article(s) that speak of breast cancer and say NOTHING of vitamin D supplementation to avoid it borders on negligence. Get the facts and become healthy because you CAN NOT be healthy without natural, healthy levels of vitamin D.
In the end, NOTHING matters as much as being replete with vitamin D! The rest of the stuff just kind of' falls into place.

I haven't read up on it, but it would make sense that being truly healthy would entail more than the proper level of Vitamin D.
this article is the first i have heard that the fat harbers estrogen. I am HER2 sensitive and have had all the chemo/radiation and now on femara for the next 4 years. and yes, i'm over weight. i have 2 sisters and neither of them or my mother have had any kind of cancer. of course it is not a one size fits all. just because you are a size 8 dosent mean you won't get it but.... Maybe if i knew before, seeing that there is no history in my family, i may not have heeded the advise. But, since i've been back on my feet i have not been overly agressive toward keeping my weight off...well, i am now..no one can tell you what it's like to go thru the treatment, side effects and the lingering after effects.
I have high cholesterol no matter what I eat or how I exercise or what medicines I take. It's genetic. I had quintuple by-pass surgery and still eat what I want, just not as much. I don't exercise either. It all seems useless when one by-pass is already completely clogged desipite changes to lifestyle.
Do you realise that cancer is programmed into your genes? That even if you take immaculate care of yourself and do everything your suppose to that you may still get what ever cancer is already there waiting to be triggered? That a virus is most likely the culprit in bringing that cancer out? Even now, they are finding people who are questioning why they have lung cancer when they were never a smoker and were never exposed to cigarettes? Hmmm. Read more about it. You may feel better for the extra effort but it doesn't preclude you from this disease.
being FAT is a choice.. I am thin because how and what I eat ( choice ) my mother looks like a balloon.. my father is pregnant. his gut is bigger than my entire body. (choice) how people eat and how they look. Eating healthy, exercising is a (choice) America in general is FAT.. its dusgusting to look at the fat man / woman in a grocery store and you look in their cart to see why. 9-10 times their kids look like they do.. We drive Suv's Minivan's because a subcompact or mini is too small for their large rear ends.. rofl.. I have no pitty for FAT people. (my choice)
my 11 year old is the same as me thin and healthy. She loves greens & fruits vs chips and icecream, would rather have subway than Mcy D's or Blimpy King.. (choice)
Some studies have shown that a high acid diet allows for yeast and other undesirable organisms to form within the body tissues. If a person changes their body PH to a positive PH, Yeast and other undesirable cells cant form. We were never meant to eat flesh. We are meant for greens, nuts and fruits.. untill you can move your body from a acid state, you will continue to be FAT and have medical issues pop up such as cancer.
(by choice) I eat and am healthy, so much that I have not been ill with the yearly flu or minor cold for several years. I dont take medications for ailments such as headaches. common cold and flu. I feel and look great.. and will continue (by choice)
