Bullies choose their victims wisely, targeting kids who are unpopular and less likely to be defended by their peers, a new study finds.
A NEW study? You mean they actually threw money away on something as common sense as knowing who the bullies picked on, something we have known for AGES? Give me a break.
Back in the day, the way to deal with a bully was for either the victim to fight back, or a "hero" to come to his or her rescue. It is part of our genetically induced behavior to sort out our rank in a group. Now, thanks to "Zero tolerance", even defending yourself or someone else will get you expelled, while those truly prone to violence among us learn how to get away with it.
It's all part of the liberal plan to turn us into taxpaying sheep to pay for more intellectual studies, and depend on the "authorities" to fix everything.
In regards to when another kid gets physically abusive (notice I said PHYSICALLY), I've always told my boys (1st and 2nd grade) they have the right to defend themselves REGARDLESS of what a school rule about physical fighting might dictate. You DON'T go around starting sh$$, but you sure as Hell can finish it if need be! And you only exert just the amount of force it takes to get them to back off. If they get sent to the office for defending themselves, then Mom and Dad will handle it. You don't just stand there and let someone beat you because you are afraid of some school punishment. You don't put up with that anywhere else in life and that does not change just because you're on school grounds. I'm sure lots of you will disagree with me, but that's just the way it is.
Back in time, my son [the only Asian [among all white] at that school] always came back from school crying and miserable. When asked as why, he said a certain boys, one in particular, were really mean to him and got physical onto him on a consistent basis...although he has many times reported but nothing has been done to stop. He added: "I do not want to get in trouble; that's why I don't fight back".
I told my him: "Son, you're already in trouble...Although you did not looked for trouble, it has looked for and got you; don't cry! stop be victim! Next time that bully hit you, tell him to stop; if he ignores and persists, no second warning...do not and never offer your second cheek; swing back and let him taste some good punches...and make sure he got what he is looking for."
A couple days later, my son reported to me that that bully looked for trouble again, and he got humiliated in front of all the students. The bully was told to stop once, but did not consider; he was then fought and thrown to the ground once...twice, three times [by that little 'chin' as he called my son] to the laugh of all present.
From that day on, my son never again came back from school crying. He did not look for a fight, but when trouble came, he did not run, but faced it instead...and knew how to use his brain and limbs whenever need was.
Just another example of how the media really really really doesn't have the power to post NEW stories that are actually RELEVANT anymore to anyone who actually is searching for news or new facts. Can you win a prize for spouting common sense?
After reading the article my first immediate reaction was annoyed mixed with a little
How did this study get funded? It's a waste of money and time. I suppose I could go look up the funding source in the literature, but at least it wasn't based in the US. Psychologists are truly poor scientists for the most part, it seems. Although it may have been good to have hard data to back up the anecdotal evidence, the method and interpretation are poor. They make the assumption that human 'bullies' lack the brain power of the typical human, or even many other species. I think many of these traits have been observed and documented in other primates. This was a waste of time. I wish I hadn't written this response, in fact.
dan42day - Why is it that almost every article has to be turned in to comments about liberals vs. conservatives. Please! The study was done by: University of Groningen in the Netherlands - none of our tax dollars contributed to this research. Not all research is publically funded. And fighting back - from personal expericence only causes the bully to continue his or her behavior. The reaction is part of the thrill of being a bully.
As far as the study goes:
Have any of these researchers gone to an elementary school or middle school in the last 40 years. Tell us something we don't already know!!!!
The solution to bullying is very simple. The bully is taken aside by a person or persons of considerable fighting ability and gets the s--t kicked out of him. Ever watch Bully Beat Down? Problem solved.Bully again, beat down again. Why is everything so difficult?
As a young apprentice in England I stopped a physical bully by telling him that if he continued --one day I would be behind him with a hammer in my hand---so if he wished to take that chance then "go ahead."----no more bullying!!!
I'm surprised that there are any bullies in the Netherlands... that's the home of the Olweus anti-bullying program. So, I guess that we can forget all the hype - because it does not work.
The only real bullying solution is for parents to bully-proof their own kids at an early age. A lot of families are having success with The Total Bully Solution http://www.totalbullysolution.com
And please, people. This isn't a gay and lesbian issue.
When my kids were in school, my son who is the younger would would be picked on, our daughter, who is older, would beat the snot out of the bullys. It also helped that we had two overly protective dogs, one of which went thru a glass storm door and chased the SOB for blocks.
I think I remember the students who perpetrated the Columbine High School shootings were victims of bullying. They fought back with violence and it did end the bullying for them. Tragic.
Well I think schools need to be a little more stricter on bullies, Detention!
There's nothing 'strategic' about going after the easiest target that will result in the least amount of backlash. It just makes you a coward.

This may be the stupidest study of all time. Yes, our tax money was spent to figure out that the weak and helpless are targeted by dicks.
How many NERDS were involved in this study anyway?

I agree - who needed a "study" to "find out" this information???? sheesh...
sjb I have a child going to 1 st grade next year and i'm going to take your approach, thanks for the advice.

DUH!
This doesn't only apply to kids. Adults seem to follow this selection process, as well.

No one used OURĀ tax money. This was done in the Netherlands.
