EXCESSIVE Salt,Sugar & Corn Syrup,Saturated & Trans-Fats,Chemical Additives & Fillers, etc --- With ALL the Concoctions & Chemical Combinations the Food Conglomerates put into our Processed Fast & Junk foods, I can't but BELIEVE there is SOME ADDICTIVE DEPENDENCY taking place. I Myself don't eat Junk food,I'm on a Strict Mediterranean Diet, NOT Obese, get a LOT of Exercise & get complimented for looking younger than my 55 years. If McDonalds went out of Business along with the rest of the "Fast Food" companies, It would do 2 positive things: Obesity would Drop & they would have to Radically Restructure a "Mickey D" Economy !!!!!
Let's all say this together- DUH! How stupid are people that they need scientific research to not only tell them that junk food will make them fat but that it is also addictive?! Hello! Sadly, I have a friend who eats out on a daily basis - mostly fast food - and wonders why she can't lose weight even though she goes to the gym everyday. Carbs, sugar, and grease make you fat. Get a clue, America.
Well, let's see. People read food labels. People let the government tell them what's good to eat and what's not. People read articles like this one. People generally don't listen to people who's contribution to the discussion is "DUH!"
That's right up there with that study they had that proved if you drink too much beer, you get a beer belly! Seriously, I think that one was performed 8 years ago or so. They call this research??!!
I said after the tobacco settlement that food was next. And now that the government is taking over health care (eventually), it has to go after any and all behaviors, of which one is food choices. It HAS to classify these things as addictive so that they can regulate it even more, and ban products completely.
Is this the world you want? I certainly see that there is a weight problem - I fight the battle of the bulge myself. But the "cure" of government intervention is worse than the disease. Cradle to the Grave intervention is simply going to be a life not worth living, as far as I am concerned. The State that tries to give you everything is the one who will have to take everything away. That which is not forbidden is mandatory.
I do not intend to live in a fascist society that dictates every last decision I can make for myself. This is exactly what we are creating for ourselves. This isn't being hyperbolic for effect, THIS IS exactly what fascism is - the Centalized State making economic decisions for the benefit of the collective. It has no room of any kind for individualism. Centralized health care inexorably will lead to centralized food regulation. Just as the beginnings of State supported health care gave rise to the attack on tobacco to refill the coffers (of course the loot was diverted to huge spending splurges by the various States creating an expansion that now cannot be afforded).
Intervention will always lead to more intervention until every waking second of your life is carrying around the Two Lists - Forbidden and Mandatory.
Truly FREE Individuals DISCIPLINE their OWN DESIRES, Individuals who Don't OR WON'T are Merely Slaves to theirs --- So WHY would Society Tolerate the Selfish,Irresponsible,Willfully Ignorant & Recalcitrant ??? I Don't WANT to SUPPORT your Obesity that turns into Medical BURDENS for the rest of us when Healthier Lifestyle/Eating CHOICES are Obvious to any one who is awake ??? !!! It's Easier to Impose Discipline on Oneself than for it to be imposed from an External source --- But Discipline WILL come !
All they had to do was rent Supersize Me. Morgan Spurlock's doctor told him his body was reacting like an addict's . . . they could've saved a few thousand dollars.
Oh please, what a nonsensical study. More proof you can prove anything you want just like the tobacco companies used to have studies saying smoking wasn't bad for you. I suspect the high calorie food did not taste exactly like the low calorie food in this study, it tasted better. Cocaine is an actual chemical addiction. At best junk food junkies have a mental addiction. Mental and physical addictions are not the same at all. Anyone who has ever known a coke junkie can tell you this.
Watch Supersize Me - even the doctor monitoring the subject of the documentary told him his body was reacting just like drug addicts do when they don't get their fix. Considering all the chemicals in fast food (fat food, as we call it around my house, but that doesn't mean we never partake - I'm all about moderation), I'm not in the least bit surprised at these findings.
Are you a scientific expert, Jangocat, or are you just THINKING you know everything????!!! Are you also denying that smoking is not addictive? Only cocaine? Hmmm.....
If Obese Rats didn't respond to electric shocks from eating "Junk Food", Then i don't think a Junk food TAX would DETER Obese people from consuming this crap either --- These companies MUST come up with a better/Healthy MENU instead.
Addiction is just an excuse for people who can't bring themselves to get over a bad habit to continue rotting away. Junk food tastes better (depending on who you're asking), it's more convenient, it requires almost no preparation--I don't think this has anything to do with addiction, personally, I think it has to do with laziness.
I quit smoking cold turkey after having a pack a day for almost five years - not much compared to many smokers, I know, but by that time I should have been "addicted" to nicotine. I never thought of cigarettes as addictive, and I think that's why it was so easy for me to stop. I am not obese, nor overweight (if anything, borderline underweight), but if I can stop smoking without any assistance, I'm pretty sure a person who eats three bags of potato chips can cut it back with relative ease. It's willpower, people, and we are being conditioned not to have any.
No kidding, you mean foods people eat for enjoyment and not nourishment may become addictive when offered in unlimited quantities?! As some one who has struggled with binge eating, it's a no duh concept. I could have saved our government thousands of dollars that was given to this lab to tell them that myself. Having grown up in a household with horrible eating habits and unlimited junk food, fast food and etc. It became pretty obvious to me when I changed to healthier eating habits how addictive certain foods can be.
You mean foods that are formulated to be the most appealing to our pallets in both texture and taste using chemicals and other additives has a similar response as drugs do on the brain? Any one who has taken basic psychology in college could have told you that.
Oh wait, it's a whole new concept, over eating fatty, sugary and processed food makes you fat. I really wish some one had told me this before.
Come on guys, quit waisting our money on things people are aware of and lets figure out how we can encourage and promote personal responsibility and we won't need labs to tell us what is making us fat.
I completely agree!!! I can be balanced and follow the PCOS system 29 out of 30 days but that one day where I give in is all about SUGAR. I just don't know how to completely kick the candy/chocolate addiction that I have and yes...sometimes it feels like I'm doing drugs because I know for my condition I am absolutely not supposed to eat 5 candy bars in a day. I just can't seem to stay strong for 30 out of 30 days. I binge and then I can refocus for the next 29 days. How can I stop the cycle??????? Any suggestions?

Wow, I did not know this! You mean that stuff can add weight to you!

To prove something is addictive is actually scientifically very difficult.
This is not a DUH study.
The rats ignored the light - that would not happen with "normal" enjoyment factors. There are chemical changes occuring in the brain.
Well, let's see. People read food labels. People let the government tell them what's good to eat and what's not. People read articles like this one. People generally don't listen to people who's contribution to the discussion is "DUH!"
To those morons who performed this study: "DUH UH!"

raymond- depressed much? Can't imagine the misery a life such as yours would bring- do you find ANY joy in ANYTHING??????
People pay to figure this out. Wow.
