taterland, I work at a hospital, and most of the Doctor's I have spoken to not only are pro-healthcare reform, but they also want tort reform more than anything else! In fact, the last rally I went to, about a third of the people present actually worked in the healthcare field! Perhaps you work at a private facility, but those at the public facility I work at want to see reform. Sorry!!

Charlie, I also believe that Congress should have to utilize the same healthcare system that the public does, and I for one am tired of paying for their personal "public option", while they refuse to work together to help Veteran's and their families, amoung the many bills that have been filibustered!

The health insurance scam was poorly conceived, poorly executed, and addresses none of the needs that the Democrats tried to sell it on. It does nothing to reduce costs and already we are seeing that it costs businesses billions of dollars and the general public trillions over the years.

The people on here that say the doctors are FOR this health care reform are crazy. The docs wanted 2 things in the health care reform, tort reform and for Medicare to have a set reimbursement amounts that doesn't go down each year. Have ANY of you heard they cut Medicare and Tricare payments by 20% starting April 1st. I work in the healthcare billing field and we actually had to tell Medicare and Tricare patients, who weren't emergent, to wait for two weeks until congress gets back from vacation because we did the math. We would LOSE money in the day to see Medicare patients. More than 60% of our patients are on Medicare. If they keep this cut permanent, the doctors can't AFFORD to see them. Do any of you KNOW how much Medicare pays for anything? Most of the time we take a LOSS on the chemo drugs we give. Doctor's deserve to be paid for the overwhelming amount of responsibility we hold them to. Being on-call for your whole life and being expected to NEVER make a mistake does warrant more pay. Good luck getting QUALITY health care in the future. And no, it's not only the upper class that's getting screwed over, it's the middle class too. Someone has to pay for all of this "great" healthcare and in the end, it will be the middle class. I already pay my fair share for social security, Medicare and Medicaid. The government should fix the gross neglect of those programs instead of blaming it all on doctors. We're all screwed. Higher premiums and worse medical care. Actually read into this reform before you think it's a good idea. They should've stuck with the public option. Instead, they just voted on some stupid plan just so they could say they passed it. I work as an Executive Assistant, and I have to tell you, it is not all that often that my politics ever come into play at my workplace. And this might surprise you, but I work at a Medical School that is of course attached to a public hospital.

Seriously. What reason would I or anyone one else in my workplace have to let our political affiliation known to anyone? However, when I talk to a woman who is my friend, we often speak of things that are political, and you can bet when I leave the office, my political leanings are often known to other's, especially if I see someone from LaRouche PAC, or if anyone see's my favorite sweatshirt I bought two years ago.

In the office is one thing. Although I am not a medical professional, if I were, the last thing I would be concerned about would be who a patient I was examining voted for!

I have a lot of Dr.'s in my family and circle of friends. I do not know of one who supports the public option. I know my two Dr. Uncles and my to sons in Health Care Professions do not favoe it--they hate it!

My niece is a physician at Mayo. You probably read recently that right after Obama said they are the most efficiently run clinic that gives superior care, they said that they are going broke on Medicare patients because the government won't even allow enough money in payments to cover keeping the lights on and the Dr.'s and staff paid so they have been forced to say they won't treat any medicare patients except on a fee for service (you pay out of your pocket) basis.

That is the way it will go if/when Obamacare goes into full swing. Right now the cost of private insurance has gone up because we are all having to subsidize medicare patients because of the low-balling of the government.

Another well known clinic here in our area, the Everett Clinic, found it went in the hole approximately $3200 per medicare patient last year. That was a cost we all picked up.

So the government advertises they are cutting medical costs by low-balling Dr.'s and clinics with Medicare an Medicaid when all they are doing is fueling the "rising medical care costs" for all the rest of us--costs aren't rising--they are just being shifted from one segment to another an giving that perception.

I want good medical care for myself and family. I have paid and continue to pay premiums for that excellent care. I wouldn't mind helping out the 12% that don't have insurance with a small tax increase, but I will not sit still for having my own health care destroyed.

Again, I work hard every day to provide this for myself and family and now we see that welfare recipients who just sit home and watch Oprah and smoke their bong are entitled to the same care I get for myself and family.

You may find this hard to believe but, Conservatives who are tired of paying for services for ALL actually get their rights from the same constitution as you do. Intelligent people that are truly paying attention may make some adjustments to the process this November. They certainly will have the opportunity. This Doctor is not running an emergency room ... I suspect his basic oath is to provide for his family and treat the patients he chooses appropiately. Based on his rights as a citizen under the same constitution as the rest of us.

Take a deep breath ... and realize ... many of these services will just go away when these professionals are mandated and regulated beyond what may be reasonable. They may find they're better off (financially) just pumping gas or turning burgers ... they would have a lot less to worry about.

Actually I am an ER Nurse and I see CA care, Dialysis and critical care for FREE every day I work. Get your facts straight...people come to the ED and simply state that they are not going to pay while they are talking on Iphones and have espensive jewelry and clothing on. I don't get it. People have learned to live off of others and the government rather than supporting themselves. This is what the healthcare reform continues to breed - dependence on others. Great...just great.

This is ridiculous. Sure, it's a free country and all, but that's horribly unprofessional and it smacks of breaking the Hippocratic Oath. A doctor's duty is to heal and help people, not give them a political lecture--it almost harkens back to the days when doctors wouldn't treat black people, or Jewish people, or Insert Group Here. A physician's personal opinions on something like politics have no place in their professional life.

The real effects of the plan will have to be seen over time. My whole problem with the reform is that no one was allowed to actually read it unless they guaranteed their vote for it. And, what happened to the "5 Day Clause" Obama promised?

Democrat or Republican matters not. The real issue is WE have to suffer through this while the elected officials continue to get their health care for free.

For the record, I think this whole reform deal is a big sham that was ramrodded through to further personal agendas.

I have several Professional Doctors as friends and every one of them as a whole are against this "reform" The AMA directorate did not get a consensus of their members before getting behind this bill. The administration Has promised to increase the AMA's powers immensly, so sure they are for it. Just another crooked back room deal. You need to know the facts--The AMA does NOT, repeat does NOT represent most physicians. Currently it represents only 20% , repeat 20% of physicians--that is 80% of physicians in the US are NOT members of the AMA. The AMA does want you to know this fact.

Reimbursement from Medicare was reduced by approximately 21% as of April 1--unless there has been another delay. What if you employer told you today that he was cutting your paycheck 21%!. Do you think physicians will be able to keep employees if they receive a zero increase in their paycheck, much less if their paycheck is reduced 21% !! This does not include the costs of increased lease cost for their office, increased costs for office supplies & equipment, and Electronic Medical Records (EMR's) for physician offices, which is being mandated by the Feds in the next several years at a huge cost per MD--with NO evidence of improved medical care or outcomes and ZERO ability to communicate with other EMR's--another fallacy by the Federal government.

Ask Pres. Obama why his health care bill has no legislation pertaining to tort reform--the tort attorneys select ONLY the cases that they know have a very high likelihood of winning ( the insurance companies are chastised for cherry- picking healthy patients--what's the difference?? )and only if that case will be for a very large sum-- ask them why the attorney receives 40%--and the patient 60% MINUS EXPENSES. This attorney may make you feel that he is really concerned about your welfare--WRONG --he cares only about his contingency fee. I understand that a woman CANNOT find an obstetrician ]in Nevada to deliver her baby. Just remember your chance of winning a huge amount in a malpractice case is slim to none--buy you and I are paying for it directly and indirectly--ER docs will order CT scans to protect their asses. How about the contingency fee dropping to 10%--the patients will receive their RIGHTFUL share and the attorneys will still take the cases, as they will make only $2 million per year instead of $6-8 million. ASk Pres. Obama how much HRE received in these "POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS"-- these attorneys expect FAVORS later on for their donation--an excellent return on their investment--like buying Microsoft stock on its very first day of issue--its the MONEY--get it!!

Also how about personal responsibility--the costs for smoking and obesity related illness is huge, and for obesity when these patients develop Diabetes, Hypertension and Lipid abnormalities, not to mention the many complications that each of these diagnoses can cause, you are only seeing the tip of a huge iceberg for medical costs in the future. Many feel since these were personal choices, these patients should pay substantially more for their insurance premiums--just like your teen-age son pays more than you do for yourself--even if that son never had an accident. The cost for the latest jet fighter has nearly tripled from the original bid--ask your Congressman to require the contractor to be build the plane at the original bid--he won't--he or she receives "political contributions" from these corporations and their lobbyists--and later become consultants for these same corporations. Illegal aliens cost the US $87 BILLION PER YEAR more than the taxes, etc that they pay--for medical care, education, translators--do you know that physician offices are required by law to pay for a translator--costing at least $50--this is a huge drain on our system for ILLEGAL action

I see you accept the liberal party line. Anyone who thinks the AMA represents the majority of docs thinks wrong. They (the upper echelons) sold out docs years ago to keep their nice, safe multibucks jobs away from the trenches in the rural areas where making a living, not huge bucks, but enough to pay off loans and pay bills has gotten increasing harder with every Medicare and Medicaid cut. That's why I haven't been in the AMA for almost 20 years (they supported a pay hold to docs for the last 3 months of year for a commercial insurance to get get their act together, while expenses to the docs certainly weren't put on hold, and I haven't seen them screaming about pay cuts to docs from the M&M's, followed by commercial insurance). And I don't know ANY docs who supported OBAMACARE. Health reform is needed, almost all docs agree, but thhis is a mess that willl encourage substandared treatment, if by no other reason than by the simple fact that the gold standard of care will be denied and although the line is "We don't tell you how to practice medicine, we only tell you what treatments and drugs we will pay for", 99.9% of patients can't afford to say, "I'll just pay for it myself then.". THAT'S been a problem already for years and if you think otherwise, you are a fool. I fought with Medicare and Medicaid for the last 5 years I was in practice over these things. All I can say is if you are in favor of OBAMACARE, then may God have mercy on you as youu pray for your miracle cure when you get really sick, especially if you are over 50-55.

OBAMACARE is such a joke it only took 36 hours after it was passed for loopholes to be found in the immediately-to-be-enacted portion of it citing there will be no children not treated because of existing conditions.

I am now disabled and unable to continue physically practicing as a physician, and I thank God for it since OBAMACARE got passed. I really miss seeing and helping my patients, but not under these rules.

Last year my wife went on Medicare. She had to switch drs. because the one she had for 20 years does not treat patients on medicare. Her first medicare doc. performed breast and pelvic exams every time she saw him which included one visit when she had the flu. The second dr. wouldn't refill prescriptions which caused her to go into insulin shock. On the third attempt she found a dr. that at least appears to care about his patients. Medicare for her has been a nightmare- God only knows what Obamacare will bring.

I have worked in family medicine as a Physician Assistant for 7 yrs and let me tell you, you leave your politics and religion and anything else you hold dear at home. Your there to help people with their medical needs, whatever and whoever they are....period. I see patients every day who can't afford the meds or care they get but they are still sick. I have seen insurance companys deny a drug to a child even though it was the only drug avalable for his condition. Do you really think that Medicare is going to be there for you when YOU retire? Do you think the insurance plans that you pay for now are going to be cheaper in 10 or 20 years? And do you think you will be able to pay for them when Medicare is not there anymore? I have friends who are in generally good health but need some surgery to repair an injury but can't get insurance because of a pre-existing condition so they try to live with it. I don't think that this new health bill is perfect, but changes need to be started...and soon. Of course it will be expensive, but that has been the excuse for decades. Even the last Admistraton complained about it but did not think twice about the expense of a long war. They had eight years to try to come up with something and the best they could do was "Medicare Part D" which is a joke. I disagree. My doctor says single payer would be a bigger disaster. He also said he will no longer take on any more Medicare or Medicaid patients. This is the third doctor in the area I've heard this from. Seems to be a trend. When Obama dumps 30 million more Medicaid patients on the system, there will be no doctors to treat them. I agree with both free speech but refusing care to those who needs it based on political reasons is another thing. If a hospital can't make money off of providing care for the elderly and disabled in this country, then they should go strictly for profit, and give up their tax breaks and subsidies. I work in the health care field and see all kinds of patients in the hospital I work at. No one can be refused care. All people get care who come whether you are here legally or illegally in the U.S. You will also get FREE treatments for Cancer, or whatever else ails you, because it is a charity hospital. I know because I work there and have treated all kinds of people from all walks of life. So, in response, we already have socialized health care. No one can tell me that people are turned away from getting health care, this is just not the case. period. We need Health Insurance reform!!! Health Insurance does not equal Health Care! There are sliding-scale clinics, free programs for the indigent, prescription assistance programs based on sliding scale per income by the drug companies if you do not have health insurance. I know because I've had to use these programs in the past. Granted, nothing is perfect, but we need to take a hard look at the Insurance Companies that are manipulating the politicians in office! This doctor seems to be simply looking at the Health Care Reform Law and making the decision that it is bad for his business. If this was an anti-Obama, anti-black president, stand he would have done this over a year ago. This is a reaction to a law that the majority of America did not want and only a minority of doctors/health care workers supported.

No doctor, employer or government bureaucrat has any right to ask who we voted for. Period. If this doctor receives (or received) Federal funds for his practice, he should have those funds taken back. His practice should be closed until he gives back all Federal funds he used.

Race has nothing to do with this. I know this is hard to believe but not all doctors like government interference in the healthcare system. This program is going to be like medicare/ medicaid and when the reinbursements are eastablished they will be below the amount needed to cover expenses but once everyone is on the government plan there will not be a way to shift the cost to other patients. He needs to get the money from those who can pay the highest rate for his services (that is basic profit motive) and if he has committed to too many government insurance plan holders it will be hard to ethically kick them to the curb later. Unfortunately it is the American way to want to make the highest wage for our work.

Let's be straight here. The doctor still has his freedom of speech and a freedom to his own apinion. Atleast for now. He is not breaking any oathe that he took as a physician, because he is not refusing to treat anyone; he is merely leaving it to their discretion. He is letting them know where he stands and if they also feel as strongly abou the matter then they have the option to go elsewhere. And besides doctors have been refusing to treat people who do not have health insurance, for years. And I am a mother of four in which Mr. Obama's plan only hurts and not helps. I cannot afford health insurance, but appearently, under his plan, he feels that those of us who cannot afford health insurance can afford a hefty fine for not obtaining it. So, again those of us who are below middle class are being punished by the government for being poor. Go figure, and this from a man whose roots are suppose to be bound to sufferage.

This has to do with the doctor's opinion of the health care bill, which Obama pushed to pass. He's simply saying he's taking no more Medicaid or Medicare patients and why. Sounds like a sound business decision to me. They will ruin his practice. Every doctor I know is doing the same. This one is just honest enough to tell folks why and to do something about it in November.

The racecard is been thrown around way too often since we elected our President. Obviously, people of all races voted for President Obama and even a lot of Republicans voted for him because of the chance at real change. I think most of us blacks realize that many of these people are not racist, but just don't like the Presidents policies. Many of the people that are accusing everyone of being racist are WHITE Democrats, and all they all they are doing is lessening the importance of real racism when it occurs. These people make me sick and should be ashamed of themselves for spitting on the graves of so many civil rights leaders. There are, of course, some real racists out there and those people need to have hunting accidents. Not everyone that is against any one thing or group of things that the President says is a racist, though. I don't like this law, but I think that the President is trying his best and wish him the best of luck, he will need it.

Probably the best way for docs to drive the point home is to simply say we don't accept this type of insurance, I will still treat you if you like, give the patient an estimate and let them decide.

And BTW some doctors do refuse patients, based on the type of health insurance or lack thereof ask your local senior citezens group ;D This is really no different then some hospital or doctor moving a patient out of their care because they have medicare or the insurance coverage is not good enough. I'm 50-50 on the mandate. Without a public option, I don't know if the costs will be driven down enough to justify it. The comparison with auto insurance doesn't really fly because that goes along with being a responsible driver. Health insurance mandates, under the new system, are imposed merely for being born into modern society. Of course, the idea in a democratic system is to take advantage of numbers as much as possible...tough call.

I believe that there is a right to health care. This right however applies to the availability of being treated and not to having everyone else pay for it. I'm not sure where you are trying to go with this. Do you disagree with subsidies for people who earn $88K or less per year to help cover the cost of health insurance. Those who make below a certain % above poverty are added onto Medicaid (the Bud-Lite of health care plans), those who make more than that get subsidies or tax breaks up to the 88K per year limit. Is that what you are talking about.

Mandating the purchase of health insurance expands the risk pool and helps reduce cost because of the reduced risk in the total population of insurance purchasers. Eventually all (or nearly all) Americans will require health care at some point in their life. That care is not free. It must be paid for in order to have a health care system in place when you get older and sicker, just like every other normal person. Getting old and getting sick is a given, unless you die first. Hopefully people will live long and mostly healthy lives, the mandatory coverage aspect helps maintain the system should indeed survive to middle age and beyond.

I prefer to have more purchasing options such as the Public Option to help control costs.

History has shown that Republics, such as the Roman Empire, outlast all other forms of government. This was no healthcare bill, it was a power and redistribution of wealth bill. The taxes on it are outrageous. Everything under the sun is taxed. Obama said anyone making under $250,000.00 would not be taxed...that is wrong, everyone will be taxed on this because new taxes have been put on everything associated with the medical profession including tanning salons. Student loans were on the bill, too, but got X'ed off. Go figure. How were students loans associated with medical care.

Unless a patient presents to a physician with life threatening symtoms, EVERY physician has a right to refuse to provide treatment to a patient. A physician has the right to terminate his/her relationship with an existing patient, as long as the patient receives appropriate notification.

Angie: Actually, there is a growing trend in America of doctors doing just that: treating only those patients who are able and willing to pay cash for services rendered. And contrary to your assumption, they're not going out of business. If they're good enough to attract wealthy patients in the first place, they end up doing quite well financially, and, due to smaller patient case loads, they are able to provide better care and usually are able to work fewer hours. It is, however, a dangerous trend that will make physician care even scarcer for the non-wealthy, as well as reducing the quality of that care.

Thank you, Mauime. I used to work in the health insurance field and I KNOW you are right. (Our job was to make sure the docs in our HMO used proper procedures when they "fired" a patient, but they most definitely had the right to do so, as well as to choose who they will take on as a new patient.) When people talk about their oath, that just about makes me sick, because the Hippocratic Oath ALSO contains an antiabortion clause, and nobody holds doctors to THAT. In any case, not all medical schools even require that oath. Albert Einstein Medical College, for one, does not. Instead, the students take an oath promising not to participate in genocide.

I think the doctor had the right to put anything he wanted on HIS door. i have read thru the comments, the police officer about the whole oath thing, and what if he decieded not to help someone when he was off duty, as to that i say that is your choice, u dont get paid for that, u r just a good decent human being who cares about people to put urself at risk when ur off duty. i dont believe u can in no way compare ur job and oath to that of this particular doctor, first because he is a urologist, a specialist in the medical field of urology, and while he knows first aid and all that i doubt he is specialized in trauma like what u r refering to. and the comment from the patient of this particular doctor, or former patient as she said, i would hope that u made this decision to protest against this doctor based on the medical services he has provided to you and not on some sign he posted int he window. if however u have become a former patient and bad mouthed this doctor for u and ur family to ban urselves against him solely because of his personal opinion, then to that i say shame on u, if u did it for this reason u r just as evil and spiteful as the rest of the world. everyone is entitled to their opinions, just because they r a public figure or a doctor or a police officer doesnt give them a different set of rights to follow and live by. the only difference between them and us is their occupation. im quite sure that doctor was simply trying to express his feelings about the healthcare reform, i dont imagine he thought he would create such a frenzy by posting a sign on his door and i am quite sure he wasnt trying to run off his patients. if anything he was probly trying to educate his patients on how this health bill is going to effect them. and isnt it odd how a reform takes 4 years to see the changes? sounds like the length of a presidential term to me.

I am a Primary Care Physician in the greater New Orleans area, and I hear this kind of hatred and ignorance all the time. #1, it makes me embarrassed to live in the South; #2, it makes me embarrassed to live in this country, when selfish jerks like this get this kind of publicity! If the media would spend a little more time explaining the FACTS of the bill, instead of the sensationalist "backlash" that surrounds it, perhaps we would all be better for it. If you opposed the facts of the bill/law, instead of just jumping on the political bandwagon (either party), then fine, oppose it. And I have heard some rational arguments against the actual bill. But unfortunately, more frequently I hear uninformed hatred & venom spewed from the conservative side.

As a doctor, what it comes down to is one simple question: why did you get into medicine in the first place? To treat the sick? Or to make money? Unfortunately, I find far too many doctors have chosen the latter. And if this bill forces the money-hungry fools like the one from the article out of the practice of medicine, then I say, AMEN! (note: being 56 years old, this just may be his way of retiring soon, and phasing out patients).

Another point is that most of the comments made on this board are written by folks who obviously have no clue of what's actually in the bill, but rather only know what Fox News & Rush tells them. Know the facts of what's in the bill before you make comments about it. The strangest part of this entire debate is that this law will most likely benefit the very people who so vehemently oppose it. I might point out that the Canadian doctors I have spoken to say that the Government in Canada does not allow the doctor to make all the decisions about what is best for their patients. To the Canadians credit they have done something about the Tort Laws that greatly reduce that problem and which the Democrats refused to address in this Health care reform bill.

You tend to think all doctors are out just for the money. I work for a Urologist in a rural area with more than 1/2 of our patients being on Medicare. We don't even get reimbursed the amount we pay for chemo drugs because Medicare won't allow it. And NOW (you probably haven't cared to look) they are cut another 21% by Medicare. You expect them to be Gods (wrongful death suits...you wonder why they have to order so many expensive tests that really arn't all necessary and malpractice insurance is more than you could imagine) but pay them minimum wage? You have no clue what a doctor's expenses are and how much they give back. Research what this will do to physicians and then tell me they're the ones that are evil for denying people. You should be looking congress' way for screwing us ALL over, income isn't a factor.

My doctors do have humanity. They take cuts every day to help out patients in need. You may not see it but if you wanted me to I would LOVE to tell you how much they actually do for free, or at a loss. My guess is, you're not going to listen. You didn't listen when I said they pay for a portion of chemo drugs for our Medicare patients, since Medicare won't cover the whole cost. (wow, real freakin jerks) It's not black and white at all like you would like to see it.

The lawyers, insurance companies, and congress made this into a money thing. So instead of just blaming doctors, why don't you look at the reason WHY they have to charge these prices. (look up how much medical malpractice insurance is a month) And that's funny, because they also have to charge higher prices because medicine is one of the only industries where the consumer receives services first and then refuses to pay the bill. Oh, and then after they haven't paid for their previous services, the doctor's still REQUIRED to see them whenever they have a problem. Well, they can actually fire them as a patient legally but that almost never happens since everyone seems to assume the docs should just continue to not be paid when they leave their familes on Christmas for someone elses' problems.

So, holier than thou, teacher of humanity, go ahead and tell me when you're going to go to school for years, have student loans, have the threat of being sued for any mistake, be on call, not get paid, take a cut in pay to barely make more than a nurse for "humanity". Readin2010, I can name more liberals on Fox news as regulars than you can on MSNBC, NBC, ABC, and CBS all combined. The same kind of world we see in Washington. I have actually read the health care bill. It is underfunded, poorly written, and full of loopholes. Doctors have been turning down Medicare and Medicaid patients for quite some time (unless it is an emergency) because the reimbursement is so low and not even across state lines.

It will only get worse. Many more doctors will leave healthcare by 2020. Why go to school for 11-16 years after high school with $150,000 in loans to make 1/2 of what docs were making 20 years ago?

Just that it is a shame that we have come to this. It is all about the dollar - most of these posts are about his right to an opinion - which he has, but not about whether it is right to post a sign telling people that a doctor cares more about their politics than their health. He has so many ways other than this one to stand up for what he believes, so many, but he chose to tell people to leave before he ever even saw them. Doing what is right may not feel as satisfying as getting your rights - but the one is the basis, the true basis for being able to keep the other. So, we agree that abortion and murdering doctors are both wrong, cheating a customer is wrong, even if not illegal, and in my view posting a sign turning people away from medical carefor their political views is wrong and is the kind of thing that will bring this country down.

I suspect that they will allow more people to study to become physicians. If I am right I believe I read that there is only so many people allowed to study and become physicians so I guess they will have to open that field up and probably will offer incentives to those that chose to be a general physician instead of specialising. I believe we are in for some big changes in the medical field.
