Gee, don't get me wrong, and I've been very vocal about my opposition to this healthcare bill--but imagine being a person in severe distress and knowing that this physician's office is the closest place for urological treatment.

The Obama-care requirement that everyone MUST buy health insurance or be fined and possibly jailed (if they don't pay the fines) sure seems unconstitutional to me. What gives the FEDERAL government the right to force a citizen to buy a product he doesn't want?

And please don't raise the phony car insurance argument. The car insurance requirement is the constitutional responsibility of the various STATE GOVERNMENTS and only applies to those who choose to drive a motor vehicle.

Sorry SWM he is supposed to be a Doctor not a politician. The cardinal rule of the oath he took when he bacame a Doctor is "First do no harm" by turning away patients he is doing harm. Therefore he should have his license pulled.

Political beliefs should NEVER enter in to the practice of medicine under any circumstance. What he does in his off hours is up to him but during office hours he is suppose to be a professional.

I agree, my doctor told me that he is thinking about leaving the office now. He is one of better doctors that I know. I believe that the people that are crying about this are the lazy people that dont like to work. I am sure that some want to work, however I feel the the scales are tipped on the wrong side. All you lazy people get out and do something useful. Maybe if you did you would not have the time to look for ways toi gt things for free.

The Dr. is an Urologist, a specialist. I doubt that anyone with a life or death situation is going to show up at his office. If they did he would call an ambulance and have them delivered to the hospital of his choice. He can pick and choose all of his patients. Just as you can pick and choose your Dr.

You do realize that less than 20% of physicians in this country belong to or even acknowledge the AMA.

Most physicians allegiance to medicine lies in the Hippocratic Oath not some pseudo-affiliation organization like the AMA.

To all those posters claiming this "Doctor" didn't turn anyone away or refuse treatment to anyone, simply because he used a "sign" and "they made a choice" because of his sign: Do you believe the "Whites Only" signs in the south during the 50s and 60s (and earlier) didn't turn people away or discriminate against them either? Yeah... it was their "choice" to not enter a place with such "signage."

I don't know any who oppose offhand. An honest doctor should see an increase in business, wouldn't make any sense to think this is bad unless you were a doctor who billed insurance companies right and left for procedures that were not needed. I could see how they would be upset. I think it's safe to say an increase in business is generally supported, don't you?

1. How about the entire state medical society in PA, backed heartily by their members, as well as many other state societies took issue with the AMA's support of this cow?

2. Increased business accompanied by increased paperwork and costs of compliance and decreased reimbursements (take a look at what's happening with reimbursements in Medicare)? Sounds like a winning combo to me.

I take it you don't know many physicians or the ones you know are institutionally employed and think that their salaries are safe. If so, they're very naive.

I said I didn't know any personally. The ones I do know happen to know the difference between whining over lack of a medicare fix that is likely coming anyway, but even if it didn't wouldn't affect your personal practice at all because you still wouldn't be seeing the medicaid patients that you aren't seeing now. They can also see the increase in business from the untapped uninsured + medicaid members who will be able to take advantage of their employer's insurance now that they can afford it due to subsidies.

The reimbursements in medicare as laid out by the bill alone aren't changed. It's mainly whining over no fix by proxy and assuming the fix won't come separately (it likely will).

Those physicians that you do happen to know but don't know personally are actually very interested in and worried about that fix which is by no means assured. They happen to be caught in a situation where the elderly constitute a vast portion of their practices. This is so because 90% of care is rendered to 10% of the populace, most of whom are elderly and on Medicare. That makes those docs in a way a captive workforce whose "whining" would be charitably construed as worry over wage concessions were they labor union members. The long view of this is that the ultimate outcome will be a single payer, to whose whims and willingness to pay every practioner will be subject. You can imagine what that prospect looks like to a new med school graduate with $200-300K of educational debt.

Internists make about $150K a year.
Urologists, dermatologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists make around $400K a year.
Surgeons make about $500K a year.

Physicians refer to the middle set as "The Cartel" because they are "fee for service" and make outrageous money for what they do. All they have to do is show up. It's not harder work, it's just that the payment business model for "The Cartels" set fees and run patients through fast. With the new health care "Obamacare" those fees are going to go down. Those docs are going to see their incomes cut in half so that they are more like internists. Isn't that just too bad?

Nobody grudges the surgeons their money. Surgeons work like plow horses and it is hard work. They have to be full-on when they work and if they screw up it has serious consequences.

As a Vascular Surgeon I will state that this individual is an exception to the rule. Most believe in the Oath they took to become a Physician above all.

As odd as it may sound the insurance companies he has contracts with may be the very people that bring him to his knees. When you sign a contract with the insurance company to provide services you are responsible to honor that contract. If he chooses to refuse patients that belong to that contract he more than likely will not have it renewed.

Patients can and do contact the insurance companies about certain Physicians. Rather than lose a large group the insurance companies will eliminate the Physicians from their network.

Like I said in another post, if even one person turns away after reading the sign on the office door, then the doctor effectively discouraged patients or potential patients from being treated by him(without ever talking to the doctor).

It's discrimination based on politics, nothing more or less.

If I put a sign on a store I owned saying: "We won't be serving black/white/asian/brown people". Then when I am asked about it, I could say: "I wasn't really going to not serve those people, but if they believed the sign and left, then that's their problem".

Would that argument work? I think not.

However, they DO seem to be experts at tax fraud, insurance fraud/intentional misdiagnosis (often putting people on disability who don't need to be no less), real estate vulturing, etc. That sort of thing isn't hard work by anybody's definition. I'm never impressed by anybody who responds to "their" money being stolen. This is because, while not generalized to everybody, in MY experience, this simply means they don't care that investing in those who MAKE them money is investing in themselves too. Saying they don't want "their hard earned money stolen" usually means "I don't want anything fixed so that I can continue my exploitation that got me here by not working very hard." The actual hard working well to do that I meet don't seem to auto dismiss like that.

If you are a cop going into a bad area, do you wait to be shot to put on a vest? Maybe the doctor read the bill and knows how it will affect him; forcing him to have even more Medicaid patients who will not pay the full bill leaving him with the choice to raise the bill for all his other patients or go out of business even more so than he is probably already doing. Medicaid that in his field which is usually "not crisis oriented" probably already causes him to choose care that is not the best option for care that is the cheapest. I could be wrong but it seems to me he has serious concerns with the bill as do most doctors. It is not like he is actually refusing patients he is just making a statement that he is seriously against this bill like the majority of Americans. I am not sure which one said it but recently a Congressman was quoted as saying we shouldn't take the health care bill personally...........really you idiot it is very personal. The Congress/Senate don't care because they all made sure they are exempt from it and the 40% excise tax on the portion of your premium that your employer pays. If your premiums for the year come to more than 10,200 you will pay a 40% excise tax on every cent over that amount. If you are fortunate and your employer pays a large chunk of your insurance you will be taxed at this rate.......while Congress, the Senate and the President who definitely get benefits that cost the American taxpayer far more than 10,200 per year in premiums are exempt from the tax. The Congress and Senate got rid of the cost of living increase for those on Social Security for the next 2 years yet just voted themselves another fat raise. It seems to me they forgot who they work for. It seems to me come November we need to remind every single one of them......by handing them a 'pink slip' and voting them out. It seems inconceivable that they would give themselves a raise and tell the elderly to 'suck it'. On top of stealing more from Medicare to pay for this ridiculous health reform....Just remember Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd.......November cometh. Obama, don't get too comfortable.......2012 isn't too far away. On top of that the lawsuits from the states suing for this reform being unconstitutional are just getting under way. Some have tried to compare it to auto insurance which is stupid because you don't have to DRIVE. Why will you have to switch in five years? There is nothing in the New Law that would require you to have to change a plan. Also, it won't be that long. Doesn't your current insurance plan have to be renewed every year? Yes. And that's just so the Insurance Company can raise the rates yet again.

Your rates, if the Insurance Company "played fair," would actually decrease. With more healthy people in the insurance pool, the risk is less, so payments would be less. Again, IF the Insurance Companies went by their own "rules." I disagree with the "must buy" option, but it was introduced as an alternative to the Public Option so many Cons cried about. (They don't seem to actually grasp the meaning of the term "option") It is at the core of reducing premiums.

And there's the proof of you being gullible and believing in the "death panel," even though it has been renounced again and again. The ONLY thing being referenced to as such was a provision requiring the Insurance Companies to pay for end-of-life counseling sessions. It was based, almost word-for-word, on a proposal by Georgia's Republican senator Johnny Isakson. It simply requires that such a question and answer session be considered as a part of treatment and covered as such.

Your problem? Pay into your current Insurance plan all you want. Have another stroke or heart attack and they can then deny you coverage as a pre-existing condition. You can be treated for high-blood pressure, change jobs (and of course forced into another insurance company's plan) and you could be denied coverage of HPB, a stroke, or a hearty attack as a pre-existing condition. THIS is the type of restructuring the New Law addresses, NOT whether or not to treat you for a cold if you're 105 years old.

What's funny is, if I lived in that area and needed to see a urologist, I would seek him out specifically. He might think he's altering my health care in some way, but in reality it would be I who was altering his ability to practice what he preaches. I would candidly volunteer my political opinion to him, in explicit detail. He would have to treat me anyway, or suffer the legal consequences, and that would make my day.

I can't believe someone would think the Doctor will make more money once Healthcare reform is in effect. Not true! They will make less... The system will be floooded with millions of new medicaid patients and the Goverment only pays 16.00 per visit, that is why a lot of Doctors will not take Medicaid. If you are a family of 4 making 88,000 your eligible for medicaid. Just think how many people fall into the medicaid group.

Income limits depend on the state and in Fl they are waaay lower than that. Not even the kids will qualify here with that much income.

I am a registered nurse and have been for many years. I can tell you first hand I have seen the negative effects of Obama's bill already, and my elder patients are suffering. I can also tell you that doctors also have the right to refuse service to clients as long as it is not based on prejudices. Every one has the right to free speech and this doctor was voicing his opinion regarding a situation that doesn't settle well with him... just like everyone of us that spent time typing a response. If you were in his place and not going to get paid for seeing medicare patients...you might feel the same. Being in health care one has a unique inside view. With regards to the nasty phone call the resident received.....lets hear it! all I saw was crappy reporting and no proof as is with many news entities today and with our current administration. You'll think piss-poor attitude when these doctors quit in mass and go into politics instead. Ron Paul is just the first of many doctors that are going to be giving up their bedside manner. They are not slaves, and we have no right to treat them like slaves. If they don't like you, I would suggest that you really don't want them as your doctors. So, maybe medical care is not equitable no matter what you do (why should it be, worse, it cannot be because there is only one best brain surgeon, and he cannot do all of the brain surgeries.) No matter what you do you cannot make it fair, because medicine really cannot do that much for you. Life and death from disease is primarily a matter of genetics, and there is not much doctors can do for inferior genetics. If you are bred to certain diseases, then you will die from those diseases, and no amount of spending on medical care can save you. And, if it is something that won't kill you, your body will mostly cure itself. Most of what urologists can do for their patients, I could do for myself if I had access to a pharmacy. Under Obama's plan most of the genetic cures that were coming up the pipeline from the pharmas will never occur because the drug companies would not be allowed to profit from these discoveries under the law. I hope they burn the research too, that led to these drug developments so they cannot be stolen by the fascists in the government. By the way, my wife is a doctor, no longer practicing in the US, and she never had a student loan. And, most government universities get most of their money from tuition, government and private research grants, and from gifts and contributions. Government contributions to universities are only one component of the funding mix, and cannot sustain the government institutions without private support. And, private schools actually pay into the inferior public system and carry the inferior institutions academically like a huge ball around their neck. Without the innovation and direction from private universities, the public universities would be completely irrelevant. So this doctor owes you or me nothing, has every right to chose who he works for (who he treats), and it would be unwise to accept his services if you oppose his interests and act to make his life more difficult. Go find another doctor, or better yet, drink plenty of water, and have a cranberry cocktail every night to calm you down.

You're full of crap somewhere along the line or you are making some poor decisions. You claim to have had a stroke and also a heart attack while in the military. If that is so, then your care is covered by the Veterans Administration, now called the Department of Veterans Affairs or more commonly, the VA. Your words "serving my country" specifically imply military service, not clerk-jerking in the Patent Office. If the heart attack or the stroke left you with permanent or long lasting medical problems then you are eligible for treatment. You are also entitled to compensation for those disabilities and any other problems brought on by the heart attack and stroke. Believe me. I am a disabled veteran rated at 100%. I also had a heart attack in 2006 but was already at the 100% level so it was pointless for me to apply for more disability due to that. I'm also the Commander of my local Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans so I know the VA system a bit and am not talking out of my posterior. I've been through their process myself time and time again through the years as my original service-connected disabilities worsened.

With the VA and it's hospitals and pharmacies where you can get your treatment for free,, why are you messing around outside of the system and bringing headaches upon yourself? In spite of the horror stories you sometimes hear about the VA hospitals, by and large the treatment is excellent and at most you will have to pay a minimum co-payment for your medications. The quality of care has improved greatly since after the Vietnam War when the VA was greatly underfunded and the buildings were run down.

Your worries about being denied care and being killed off that way are sort of silly. The only time people don't recieve additional treatments at ANY hospital are when the doctors agree that any more treatments will be pointless and probably do more harm than good. No doctor worth his diploma denies needed medical treatment to anyone on account of money. I've never seen the VA do anything less than the best for their patients, limited only by the availability of medications or equipment. If you stay in a system that would kill you off through negligence when another system is available then it is on your own head. By the way, I think that the claims about death panels are just so much BS. Citizens would riot the first time they applied the policy. Anyways. go to your closest VA hospital and get enrolled. Save yourself these unnecessary worries. If you have any problems the seek help from a Service Officer from an organization like the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, or the American Legion. They'll assist you for free and most have an office at VA hospitals.

Now, on the matter of the doctor with his sign. He has every right to post it and snicker behind his officce door. Saying that, I would also say that this man is an a$$hole of the 1st degree. I didn't vote for Obama or McCain. My " man"was Cynthia MacKinney as a write in. Since I'm already covered for my medical this issue diidn't much matter to me personally. But any doctor that would post a sign such as that and feel justified in making anyone that is needful of his services feel anything less than fully confident of his best efforts has abandoned the ethics of his profession and become a party shill. He has made himself a republican doctor instead of a doctor. I think that he has broken the limits of professional ethics by doing this . I support Dr. Cassell's decision. He and other doctors are being provoked through this form of government coercion disguised as health reform, and he's voicing his contempt for it.

Dr. Cassell doesn't have to wait until Obama's health care reform bill negatively affects him to know that his ability to practice medicine will be adversely hindered. That's like saying you have to wait for the bullet to hit you before you can know that the loaded gun being fired at you is going to cause injury. It's going to!

Doctors everywhere are going to see this legislation cause an influx of patients with national "health" coverage whose payments to the physician won't be anywhere near his actual fees to stay in operation. Doctors all over the country may have to lay off nurses, close down an extra day or two, and downsize in other ways just to keep their practices running. That means LESS income. Also, more people to see means less quality time spent diagnosing and treating patients.

Could restaurants stay in business if the government said to restaurant owners, "You have to serve all of the hungry people in the US. We will pay for it through tax revenues, but you will be getting less money for each meal you serve than what you would get from out-of-pocket customers"? No, they could not stay in business. The government would only be increasing customers and paying for them at a reduced rate. The government would not pay for the extra cooks, servers, dining space, and inventory that would be needed to make it all happen. Same thing in medicine.

I love the idea of access to medicine for all people, but this line of action WILL hurt everyone in the long run. It's only a matter of time.

(Except maybe a notice of the Insurance Companies' "rules.") So you Cons can't understand the number of healthy people out there not currently enrolled in insurance plans? That's the argument of your beloved big-business insurance companies. Too many healthy people not being insured. Do a little research into it. Learn something new today.

It's the insurance companies' claim that with more of these healthy people paying into the system, their risks are reduced enough to allow them to lower their premiums to everyone. The larger and healthier the risk pool, the lower their costs.

Again, this part was only implemented as a way to reduce costs because the Cons complained so much about the proposed Public Option. (Again, with absolutely no understanding of the term "option.") This was a compromise made to the Cons, who simply wanted to weaken the proposed bill. The Insurance Companies enjoy an exception to the anti-trust laws. This allows them to "price-fix" their way to huge profits.

A true Public Option would have allowed people a Choice (look up that word for clarification please) of keeping their own expensive insurance plan or going with a much more reasonable government sponsored plan. Many more people would then be insured. Why? Because they could actually afford it.

And when the big insurance companies lost a few customers and didn't gain that many new ones, they would reconsider how much actual profit was necessary. Would they be forced into bankruptcy? No. They would most likely have a slightly more expensive plan with a lower deductible and copay than the government option plan. Because of the lower price (from their current rates) more people could afford their plans and many would opt for them. Why would their plans be lower priced? Because of true competition, outside of their monopoly world.

The truly ironic thing? If they did have true competition, and were "forced" into lowering their rates... they'd probably generate more profit anyway. Make a little less per customer, while adding many more customers. That's capitalism at its finest.

Last, but certainly not least, I can easily come up from under the water, but I'll bet you'll have a much harder time getting your head out of your ass. Maybe your local proctologist won't discriminate against Cons. Talk about a volume business: Removing Cons' heads from asses.

The doctor certainly has the right to express his opinion; good for him for exercising it. But the manner in which he did it was extremely unprofessional.

Actually Alan, no it is not refusal of treatment. Regardless of what you may believe, the doctor can only be charged with refusing treatment if a patient actually comes into the office and the doctor tells them he won't treat them. That is the law. You can make the argument that it may cause some people to seek treatment elsewhere, but the sign itself is not an outright refusal. A good lawyer could easily argue that the sign is merely a request, not an outright refusal of service.

I can tell you why the Indians make it. Just yesterday I stopped at a RaceTrack gas station to fuel up. There were six islands and not one paper towel in any of dispensers. They put out of order signs on their restrooms to save on the water bill and don't ring up a lot of items in the cash register. They come over here tax free, take over our gas stations and then are not even thankful enough to provide services for their customers. It has got so bad that I will go in to see if indians(NOT AMERICAN INDIANS) are operating the store, or AMERICANS. If it is not AMERICANS I will go on down the road. I refuse to spend my money with them. AMERICANS are over here supporting them, spending our money with them, all the while they would just as soon kill you as look at you, if they could. I spent my entire life struggling to make ends meet. We DO NOT have equal opportunity to live our dreams in this country any more than any other country. The rich do everything in their power (and they control the power structure) to keep the "less fortunate" down. I watched a major corporation use a government agency (CPSC) destroy an entire industry that I was part of, just because our industry was cutting into their "profits" by offering a much better product. (Owens Corning Fiberglas vs. UF Foam Insulation....the better insulator, 1981.) The only doctor's who this does not effect are the one's who not only became doctor's for money but actually desire to help the unfortunate (i.e. those on medicare/medicaid).

My doctor has told me that accepting Medicare and Medicaid has made him have to take more patients and therefore spend less time with any individual. He didn't add anything about quality of care suffering because of it, but that would go without saying.

I don't think this hybrid solution is a good one. But I do believe everyone should get health care. Other countries can do it, and do it right. Why can't we?

And here I was believing that the majority of the fraud problem was (but not restricted to) the people setting up fake businesses and billing Medicare for expensive items not needed, delivered, or purchased. Those that can get away with it because people want investigators to catch these defrauders, but don't want to have a .0005th of a cent increase in their annual taxes to pay for the investigators. The only difference is in whether they will bother covering a service at all. In fact there is no such thing as a medicare salary... there is no such thing as any insurance specific salary for a doctor. In fact under the current system if there WERE insurance specific salaries... a medical professional would be just as angry at the denial of service for prior conditions as the sick. That would mean you wouldn't get paid at all!

You either work for the insurance industry who wants you to think doctors lose out, or you are just in some other field and they already have.

1st of all, the bill doesn't tell any doctor how to run his business. 2nd, do you realize that if a lot of hard working people came down with cancer they don't even have health insurance to get treatment? I would very much rather wait in line for treatment than not be able to afford treatment at all after working so hard for my stuff.

There's a reason they pay more in New York opposed to Iowa...........It's called cost of living. I agree with your comment on the box of tissues. Oh, and how about the cost of those meds in hospitals............three and four times the cost of the local pharmacy. Or, $1000.00/day for 1/2 a room.

No, they have to make up for all of the UNINSURED/Non-Medicare/Non-Medicaid patients who can't pay the bill at the emergency rooms. Too often, these people get turned out after ER treatment IF they can't show proof of ability to pay for admitted care. Hospitals only have to administer ER treatment to all patients.

I agree with dam tired of this. Many of the doctors in my home town (Missouri) have bypassed insurance companies alltogether, and have gone to cash- only transactions. Customers who don't have insurance pay a flat rate for a doctor's visit, usually around $15-$20. If they can't pay the cash, some docs will allow them to work off the visit with manual labor (painting, repairs around the doctor's office, etc.) The docs are actually making MORE money this way and opening up the door for more people to afford regular doctor's visits.

But, then they'll have to get a job & all most ,if not all. know how to do is write where no one can read it Pompous @!$%#s...The whole lot of them

$15 - $20 for a Dr. visit? That is a good thing for the patients, but I wonder how it is really measuring up for the Drs. I do have insurance, and my copay is $20 to $30, and sometimes more. So even if the Dr. wouldn't receive ANYTHING from my insurance, he or she would still get paid more by filing it. Also, for a very brief NURSING visit (cpt code 99211), Medicaid pays $34.16. Notice that is just for seeing a nurse--the Dr. doesn't even have to use his or her time to see the patient, just reviews the chart later.

Like most everyone else, I am wondering how these healthcare reforms will affect me and others. I have tried to read what I can, but most articles seem to be heavily slanted, in one direction or the other. It is hard to get straightforward facts without a lot of hysteria.

That being said, I cannot agree with what this Dr. in the article has done. It is one thing to have a strong opinion, politically or otherwise, but it is a different thing altogether to allow it to interfere with the treatment of patients when you have taken an oath to be a healer. How could a patient who knew they were not welcome at this office possibly come in for help and feel comfortable and safe there? Perhaps this is just an attention-getter to bring a needed spotlight to his wife's political aspirations, but I believe it is beneath anyone in the health profession. That is like denying medical care because someone doesn't go to the same church as he does. It is about beliefs. What kind of outcry would be raised if the sign had said "If you DID NOT vote for Obama, seek urological care elsewhere"? Bet it would be loud.

I wouldn't go to this doctor if you paid me. Its all about the fricken money. Maybe one day we will actually get more doctors who see it as a calling. F him.

If this doctor refuse to treat ALL patients he will not be reimbused by medicare because of patient discrimination. This doctor could chose to treat only cash paying patients, but he would be competion with other cash only doctors. In the end this doctor wouldn't make $hit because of his very few cash only patients. He won't be able to afford to pay his nurse(s), laboratory technicians/laboratory technologists and receptionist(s). His clinic is headed for bankruptcy!!

I wish people would get their facts straight. The PRESIDENT does not, and has not for decades, been covered under the same healthcare as Congress or Federal Employees (they WERE both under the same plan....Congress did NOT have their own special plan.) The president has his own medical staff right at the White House for some care and Walter Reed Hospital for other care. He also has a traveling medical team. MOST staff members of both the Congressional and Executive branches WILL be moved from the Federal Employees insurance pool to the "public" pool from what I understand of the bill/fixes.

Dam, last time I checked, the constitution made sure if people didnt like something, they could actually do something about changing it. The constitution itself is a good symbol of that: If we feel it lacks something (like the fourteenth amendment) then we can change that and put it in. Telling someone to leave just because they want to change something goes against the very idea the founding fathers had. AND that applies to people who dont want change. No one should be telling them to leave either.
