No telling what might pop up out of a volcano besides lava now that what's happened in this story has happened...RUN!!

Lets be perfectly clear here; this has nothing to do with man-made causes. Fungi like this multiply and are released, just like a volcano. Once out - good luck. There are thousands like it; just this one happens to affect our respiratory systems more. All the religious and government crap is just that - it is called nature and evolution.

It's not clear yet to any scientists, but I'm likely to side with some that think there was a migration due to man; I understand we can't be isolationistic, but have always felt there's a much greater risk of something like this happening with constant and volumetric international traveling, importation, etc.. .

I also agree that mutations and virulent viruses, spores, etc... have always been and always will be; nature has a way of keeping numbers in check, and that may boil down to little more than timing, but seems it has always accomplished the same.

This warrants more attention than did H1N1, so hopefully it recieves the same attention from science.......

What concerns me is the analog in the reptilian world.

A fungus is now spreading across the globe that is wiping out entire species of frogs.

Could this fungus become the same thing for humans? So far it's only killing ~25% of those infected, but many that don't die are left disabled. This could potentially turn in to something catastrophic in human proportions.

I just hope that it does not have to become an epidemic before the US decides to ramp up research and treatment. How many people have to die before the general population becomes educated and learns how to detect symptoms to treatment can begin as soon as possible.

They are working on it now and that takes time. We need to clean up our air, water and environment. If you believe in the bible it is following through.If you don't the start fallowing through on helping to clean up our world.Just look at the oceans with the trash in it, the rivers and creeks that are polluted, We were given a clean world to live in and we have caused these things to happen.

Where do you get the idea that eucalyptus trees are prevalent in China? They originate in the Australian region, and there are several hundreds of species in tropical and subtropical regions. The article is a bit of a worry for this Australian.

My take on this? Fungus thrives in oxygen starved environments. We burn the oxygen of the athmosphere faster than it can be replenished, which I read some 30 years or so ago. We have more people on this earth every day, and they are all consumers of oxygen. This is simply another event for the term 'told you so!'

Once, the entire planet was thriving with complete, forested ecosystems that have been turned into concrete, parking lots, freeways, houses and skyscrapers. As trees and plants gave way to dead planet products, like concrete, would it come as a surprise that there is less oxygen? How much oxygen can oil, money, concrete, bricks, plaster and metals release?

And, the Earth's ecosystems regulate pathogens in the food chain with man. Animals noted for performing this regulation are amphibians, reptiles and birds, all of which are struggling to remain extant as their habitats have been turned into parking lots, burger joints and freeways. could be ma natures way of defending it's self. everything at somepoint tries to evolve to prevent its kind from being exstinct to adapt to new enviroments. being trees are not close to being exstinct, but there is a growing shortage of land, it is possible this is a defence virus. prevailing winds will allow it to venture rapidly east, as it pollonates, releasing more spores.

With no way to stop it, no way to keep from being infected, will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Sorry Dr. Nu , if you haven't heard of this fungus you never check with CDC, they have had it for a while. Yes you are right about preventive care , but these things need to be known.Especially the doctors need to know.If gets to my state I will wear a mask a good one. when out side. Incidentally, we have been living with this in BC for a few years now, with articles appearing every so often. It's been a reportable disease since 2001. Apparently the vast majority of people exposed (presumably including hikers and campers like me) develop no symptoms, most people having a natural immunity.

Some info: from 1999 - 2006, 165 reported cases, 8 deaths in BC. None of the deaths were attributed to Republicans.

Having said that, those who take doxycycline, as, for example, teenagers with acne, have to be especially careful because fungal diseases can run rampant within the body. I met a woman overseas taking doxycycline for anti-malaria prophylaxis, and her entire body was coated with white fungus like fine baby powder, ... but that's better than getting malaria, I guess.
