I seriously question the rate of male/female births in China of 119 males to 100 females in 2009. I saw a 60 minutes episode that covered the topic of Chinese adoptions of female babies. Although the practice of abortion of these female babies is "illegal", vans with ultrasound machines inside are everywhere and the sex of the baby can be determined beforehand. Also, they showed a typical classroom in China and there were row after row after row of males and only two or three females. China is going to have a real problem, soon, with only a population of men walking around.
I would NOT want to be a senior citizen in China. Just think of the percentage of senior care providers that are women. Picture a lack of women care providers combined with a boom in seniors. THAT is another nightmare China faces on top of what to do with all those unattached males.
The 60 Minutes piece also stated that with the lack of females, the males became overly aggressive. This came out in the form of excessive fighting, homicide rates, gangs, etc... and some of that was due to the lack of having sex. I guess nothing else to do.
There may be a lot of (ahem!) importation of females from other lands in the next generation - if some men can get over certain cultural prejudices. But its gonna be ugly. Thanks for the link - I'm teaching demography this week, and the textbook focuses on Italy and the lack of young people. Here's an interesting population pyramid to play with!!!
That makes China the WORLD'S problem, jet. All those freaky teaky men and no women. . .sounds like the plot of a ridiculously predictable horror movie, doesn't it. Look on the bright side. At LEAST the Chinese people understand the economics of raising ONE child versus attempting to raise an entire brood on the same low income. Maybe they could come and teach Family Planning classes here!! We certainly NEED good class in that regard! But seriously, 400 MILLION lives lost to this cruel law. . .so many humans that could have, would have and never will have an opportunity to enjoy life. Very, VERY sad, indeed!
But seriously, 400 MILLION lives lost to this cruel law. . .so many humans that could have, would have and never will have an opportunity to enjoy life.
Noting China's GDP and socioeconomic demographics, a China with 1.8 billion people vs. one with 1.4 billion people is not a recipe for head-in-the-clouds musings about the wonderful lives of those hypothetical 400m.
My question is, Why go outside the United States to adopt? There are real adoptable children that will appreciate the love and family. For that matter if you think you have the Need to travel outside the United States to adopt, which I still do not understand. You can go to places like Israel, Europe, Korea, Japan, or even Mexico or Canada for that matter. I do not understand the mentality of some one that wants to go to some place else to "Help the needy" When here are those in need here in Your United States of America. Help and humanity start at home.........
they have been killing there kids for years. so what do we have to say about it, as we argue abortion? we say "can we borrow some more money, if we do nothing about the killing of kids"
Well, for one thing, children have an absolute right to contact their birth parents at the age of 18, but selfishly adopting outside of the country would make this prohibitively expensive.
I dont see how, travel and contact to other countries is far from being prohibitively expensive.
The only hurdle is if there are official records to find the parents. But that applies even if the child from another country was adopted in or out of that country.
Gee, I'm a middle class woman and I haven't been out of the USA since high school, when my class went to the former USSR. You're lucky you're such a jet setter. It's a very big deal for my family to travel someplace two hours away in our own state. Overseas travel is VERY expensive and most of us don't do it routinely. Most 18 year olds have very little money. The days of backpacking across Europe on a shoe string are gone. I also routinely meet adoptive wannabes saying "We want to go overseas so it's harder for the birth moms to change their minds." As a women who once came very close to being a "birth mom" myself, but who managed to keep my baby, I want to slap their faces! Who do they think they are, stealing a woman's baby just because she is pregnant and poor!
It is very much forced when people lie to you about the availabiltiy of help or the probability of things getting better, which routinely happens to you in the States.
BTW. this has been documented by the Washington Post, hardly a conservative rag. They have admiited that Planned Parenthood pigs lied to women, telling them there was no help available, just so they'd abort.
I do not understand the mentality of some one that wants to go to some place else to "Help the needy"
I agree, you don't understand. Adoption is not always about "helping the needy", many (most) times it's a purely selfish need to want to have children. As a single woman who wanted to have a child, my adoption options, specially for an infant, were severely limited. China gave me the option to adopt a healthy child under 12 months of age. Adoption has no borders or citizenship. My daughters are now 10 and 13 and I don't see two Chinese girls when I look at them - I just see my kids.
Well, for one thing, children have an absolute right to contact their birth parents at the age of 18, but selfishly adopting outside of the country would make this prohibitively expensive
You would actually have to have some form of birth records or know who the parents are. In most international cases abroad, there is no known knowledge of the birth parents, as the children are often times abandoned.
And just one more thing... even if I could have adopted in the U.S. (which was the first option I looked at - international adoption wasn't even a consideration until someone from a domestic adoption agency suggested that to me as my only option)... I talked to quite a few adoptive parents, one of which was in an adoption group with me, and told horror stories of the teenage mom that she had adopted her son from. Turns out the teenage football dad and his family - once they realized it was a big strapping boy - wanted him back (after he was 2 years old already and had been with is adoptive mom since he was a day old). She spent 4 years and over 100,000 in court costs fighting to keep her son. So people who spout the reasons why families should adopt domestically know very little of the risks involved.
The U.S. needs to follow this protocol in their taxation scheme and stop REWARDING non-producers for having children, rather PUNISH THEM punitively for being wastrels and burdens on society and the economy.
Unless you can prove that you have the financially stability to support multiple children (first two, no penalty) and you become pregnant, that child goes to the state and you are chemically sterilized.
I'm sick of welfarism and special entitlements for these useless baby-factories while the rest of us work our tails off to pay the taxes that support these ingrates and leeches.
Ya know, I can't tell if you're a liberal or a conservative. You want the government to fix a problem that was created by (or at the very least encouraged along by)... the government.
Instead of suggesting a Hitleresque 'Final Solution' perhaps you could suggest an elimination of entitlement programs and make yourself not seem like a raging lunatic?
The scum sucking ghetto dwelling, welfare low-life's have been breeding out of control far too long. The only thing slowing them down is the fact most of our states are broke and putting time limits on people who receive welfare entitlements. We could do better by doing away with those same benefits for the 'kids' as well. Let's face it, I live in California (one of the most 'generous' states in the union as far as welfare goes), our time limit is 5 years for the adults and up to 18 (the age of) for the kid, and if you can't get your 's@@t' together in that amount of time, you don't deserve to raise kids, PERIOD! School, babysitting, fixing your car, gas (sometimes), housing, food, utilities (through the utility companies), clothing and all other sort of amenities are either free or greatly reduced. All at taxpayer expense. It's well past time in doing away with this 'gift' from the government...
China is learning the hard way, that you can't get rid of half the population without reaping the consequences...
I want government to stop rewarding familial malfeasance.
I'm not suggesting a final solution which entails murdering living beings. I am talking about preventing useless eaters from producing more useless eaters. It establishes a nearly unbreakable chain of welfarism. There is no motivation to break free.
I am a Constitutionalist. Stop breeding what you cannot feed on your own. It is not our responsibility to support your bastards whelps.
It is absolutely not the responsibility of the productive to support the non-productive, the useless and their useless offspring.
There is nothing progressive about encouraging breeding by those incapable of supporting their own. I am not responsible for your kids and I'll be damned if I want you or anyone else to be responsible for mine.
Once you abrogate that responsibility to someone else, they own you. They rule you. I refuse to be rule or owned... and to that end I have no desire to own or rule anyone else.
You're disgusting. I never got one dime of state money for my children, but I was desperately poor. I could have murdered my baby for the crime of being poor, but I did not.
I'm not suggesting a final solution which entails murdering living beings. I am talking about preventing useless eaters from producing more useless eaters.
So, forced sterilization? Care to cite that Constitutional reference?
bastards whelps.
I see your constitutionalism quite obviously stops at that whole equality of man thing. After all, poor people's kids are "bastards whelps," and I assume your own kids, well, aren't.
China is a foreshadow of things to come in the US under Obama. A future, high-priority step in health care is to control our population. Limited births, forced abortions, and forced sterilizations loom on the horizon.
Limited births is something all nations need to seriously consider and needed to years ago.
The world is in real trouble, one family having ten children does not help the current situation at all. We have children in every nation that live in horrible conditions, given away, sold, and dumped like trash.
Population control is a real need, not a punishment. If one is hell-bent on having more than one child then adoption is a way to go.
well at least chinese women understand the concept of only having children you can afford, if only america could understand this concept of only having what you can afford - the government should not have to pay to raise children you chose to have! also its a shame that americans cannot grasp the concept of 2 kids, that way you and your partner have been replaced when you die but you have not added to the population, only selfish people contribute to the overpopulation of our planet
It's not a problem of too few babies, it's too few girls. For years, the Chinese have aborted fetuses known to be female, as well as disowned or murdered female babies so their one child could be a boy and carry on the family name. In a couple of decades they will be a country of old people and young men. The article states that they face a problem with too few young people to take care of an aging population. No worries there, China was the inventor of euthanasia, once a person got too old to be of benefit to the society, they would walk them out to the woods and leave them there to die. Most likely they will just revert back to that process. Chinese girls in other parts of the wolrd will be able to make a killing in the years to come if they go over there and become baby machines for profit. Otherwise it will be a paradise for any man who is gay and has an asian fetish.
Do you honestly think you can just move to China? Most countries actually enforce their immigration policy.
I know you can as long as you go thru the proper channels.
I have personally know many people that have gone to China for work given the downturn here. I am talking born and raised in America people, not just returns or people of Chinese decent.
Plus future wives of nationals will have no problem either, China is well aware of the imbalance and doesn't work against "bringing in" potential wives.
I have personally know many people that have gone to China for work given the downturn here. I am talking born and raised in America people, not just returns or people of Chinese decent.
Yep, there are vibrant US expat communities in Beijing, Shanghai, and most second-tier Chinese cities (and I don't just mean the "English teacher" backpackers).
Okay, please explain how I, a college graduate with multiple skills, although I admit I don't speak Mandarin, can go to China and work?
Apply for a work visa. I know that some people consider such an act to be tantamount to black magic, but such avenues exist. Of course, it depends on what those "multiple skills." I somewhat doubt the financial success of an expat with training in animal husbandry or kinesiology, for example.
I have degrees in Biology and accounting, and I know Latin, which is after all a useful language. I have had many math courses and I've tutored math, biology, and chemistry.
I wish Americans would only have as many children as their income level can support. We make it too easy, as well as encourage people to have too many children so we can implement more programs to take tax dollars and support them; instead of being able to use tax dollars for infrastructure issues. We should not provide financial support for more than the national family average.
ALL societies have encouraged people to have children, as children are useful for all societies. They aren't a private indulgence, like a pet! Who do you imagine will pay your social security?
Not all of the babies are aborted. While it is also illegal, many babies are abandoned & therefore put up for adoption. My husband & I are in the process of adopting a Chinese baby. Due to the low income of many families, along with the 1-child law, many families can't keep even their male children due to some type of "special need" (many of which we don't consider a special need here). It's sad - these families truly want & love thier children, but just don't have the means to raise them. Also, what wasn't said in the article is one of the reasons these families prefer the boys - there is no medicare/social security in China. They depend on their sons to take care of them into old age. The girls are married off & therefore take care of their husbands' parents. That's a custom we don't necessarily agree with, but one of the reasons they are "cheap labor." We take for granted the programs we have here, and how much they affect our lives (& our childrens' lives).
When a child says "abandoned" that is stealing, if the child feel he or she has no child. I've been there, and you're a jerk to feel otherwise. Ever been desperately poor and pregnant, you creep?
Abandon means the parents dumped the child and that child is all alone now. Would you have children stuck forever on the street or in government systems?
Abandon means the parents no longer take care of or support the child.
Obviously adoption is better than abandonment but from a child's POV it seems the same. They can't really understand why they are being given up. A friend of mine stopped me from adoption for this reason, and I'm glad, particularly because I ended up marrying my child's father and giving that child everything the typical "planned" child within marriage has. He is about to spend the next month with his paternal grandparents in Hawaii after having graduated from a good private high school that his maternal grandparents paid for. Yet I almost gave him up to total strangers 19 years ago--would that really have been the right thing to do? What stopped me is that my Lebanese best friend slapped me into the middle of next week when I mentioned the word "adoption". (She backed this up with a promise to care for my baby while I got on my feet, a promise she kept.) Now, I'm less sure that adoption is really the best thing in most cases. I have relatively little sympathy for infertile couples since so many got that way by waiting too long because they were obsessed with career and/or having fun. You get zero sympathy from me that way. You also get zero sympathy if you lost your fertility due to multiple abortions or STDs.
And it's very obvious you have NO idea what it's like to be desperate. I live in a country (the USA) where in every state your child can be taken merely because you are poor. Before you say I'm lying, I worked for a child protective agency for three years. Most infertile people got that way due to multiple abortions, STDs, and/or simply waiting too long, so why do they deserve our pity?
I often bash China but...hey...that one child policy was the one thing that the Chinese government got right. If it hadn`t been for the insufferable bias that they have towards favouring males over females the policy would have been exemplary in it`s concept, design and execution. But because of the archaic bias that many Chinese have toward the female gender we have a male/female ratio that is decidedly out of proper proportion. What is wrong with the constipated Chinese thinking and why are they so brain dead? I really believe that a female is capable of ministering to aging parents just as well,if not better, than any male.
But because of the archaic bias that many Chinese have toward the female gender we have a male/female ratio that is decidedly out of proper proportion.
Archaic? Please remind the class as to when women's suffrage passed in the US, mmmkay?
What is wrong with the constipated Chinese thinking and why are they so brain dead?
Cute. It's the same fundamental reason women in most Western countries take the family names of their husbands upon marriage. But hey, don't let rational thinking get in the way of your China-bashing.
Are you too much of an a-hole to post a decent and civilized response? Also, a one-child rule in America won't impact "social security" or make it "unsustainable."
[[Immigration can always be increased to offset any dangerous trends and social taxes can be increased.]]
Are you a complete idiot? Who would want to immigrate to China, a totalitarian, Communist country where they shoot you for disagreeing with the government? Also, just how much do you imagine they can increase taxes without distroying incentives?
Are you a complete idiot? Who would want to immigrate to China, a totalitarian, Communist country where they shoot you for disagreeing with the government?
Pot, meet kettle. China's economic growth means that, for the last 5 years, it's been a top immigration destination for the business-minded. And by the way, nice hyperbole, but Ai Wei-wei is still very much alive (and very well for himself), assuming that you, in your worldly knowledge of Chinese politics, have even heard of the guy.
Next time, read more than mainstream US punditry for knowledge on geopolitics. You might actually learn something.
What we can't survive is a DECLINING population. Mathus was wrong. This has been proven.
So Japan has completely imploded already? News to me.

Do not apply your cultural reference to other cultures. In China, the son is expected and do take care of the parents in their old age.

It's a novel thought, isn't it? Common sense can do wonders for an individual, a family and a country.
I wonder how many anti-abortion people support the Chinese by going to Walmart and buying everything they make?

Hardly, and I say this as someone whose spent his high school years learning Latin. Especially in China, nobody gives a s--- about Latin.
You can probably do something with your accounting degree, and depending on your pedigree/inclination, do something pharma-related with bio & chem.
I'm glad we got past the "Chinese immigration policies won't let me in!" BS.
Actually, our local newspaper (a big city rag) just ran a story about the crying need for Latin teachers where I live.

So I guess stealing their children makes you feel better? Because isn't that exactly what you're doing, by your own admission?
Mayeb you missed the part of where aleigh stated "abandoned" children. That is hardly stealing and is very noble and kind thing to do.
When a child says "abandoned" that is stealing, if the child feel he or she has no child. I've been there, and you're a jerk to feel otherwise. Ever been desperately poor and pregnant, you creep?
No it is not.
Abandon means the parents dumped the child and that child is all alone now. Would you have children stuck forever on the street or in government systems?
Abandon means the parents no longer take care of or support the child.
So adoption for that child is a very GOOD thing.
Good for you. That's still different from "abandoned."
That being said, there are growing accounts in China of child kidnappers who sell bought-to-order kids to thusly inclined Chinese families.
Archaic? Please remind the class as to when women's suffrage passed in the US, mmmkay?
Cute. It's the same fundamental reason women in most Western countries take the family names of their husbands upon marriage. But hey, don't let rational thinking get in the way of your China-bashing.
America needs a one-child rule. One biological child, the rest should be adopted.
Are you too dumb to understand that this would halve our population in one generation, making social security unsustainable?
Are you too much of an a-hole to post a decent and civilized response? Also, a one-child rule in America won't impact "social security" or make it "unsustainable."
well, obviously it would.
Not even close to true anyways.
Immigration can always be increased to offset any dangerous trends and social taxes can be increased.
Of course American, like the world, still needs lower populations.
Ask the Italians or the Japanese how they feel about negative population growth. The answers you may get would probably shock you....
Italians and Japanese are just worried about their cultures changing.
America doesn't have that problem since we have NO set culture.
The planet can not a continuously growing population. There are already too many people on earth.
[[The planet can not a continuously growing population. There are already too many people on earth.]]
No there aren't. What we can't survive is a DECLINING population. Mathus was wrong. This has been proven.
Oh you were so close Oom, now try to post something that doesn't involve you calling names and making exaggerated baseless claims.
Prove I'm wrong.
Prove that you're not. I'm off to go make a sandwich.
So Japan has completely imploded already? News to me.
