WOW, looks like someone just woke up. We've known pollutants, radiation and chemicals cause cancer for decades. It all started back in the sixties when the government banned DDT and started cleaning up the air. So, why all of a sudden this is news, probably because they have created new chemicals and forms of radiation without long term testing. Let's face it: Lung cancer is not caused from tobacco alone(add air pollution), we have harmless cancer cells in our bodies that can turn cancerous from radiation and DDT still exist in the ground where we grow food. We have been doomed for a long time and the cancer rate will continue to rise. There's no way out.
Yep, Shawn, you are so correct. For many years, pesticides and herbicides have been highly suspect in cancer. And, I remember thirty years ago, the cancer rate was lower. Childhood cancers were considered a 20th century disease. Many say, we are experiencing an epidemic of cancers. And yes, you don't have to smoke to contact lung cancer. And, second hand smoke is so prevalent too.
I have known several people who died in their forties who never touched a cigarette, but died of lung cancer. I am glad the organic food industry is blooming. Nutrients and vitamins are higher in organic produce, and I think the organic fruit is tastier and sweeter; the veggies are fresher and better too.

I'm assuming you will be voting in favor of larger government involvement then, since the only way to fix this is for the government to regulate corporation's unrestricted use of any chemicals they want. Corporations have no interest in anything or anyone except their profit and their shareholders. The government has an interest in its citizens remaining healthy and productive.
The party that nearly always sides with big business under the guise of "anything goes, free market baby!" is the modern Republican party, who also loves to cut funding for the EPA, the government agency that could be keeping an eye on this. Look at the list of banned chemicals in France, where there are strong government regulations, as compared to the U.S., where conservatives mock environmentalists and call thinks like the government banning lead from gasoline, or imposing safety guidelines on coal factory emissions (mercury, sulfur, etc) "government takeover," "job killer," "environmental nazi agenda," etc.

When I was diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma in 1997, the first thing the doctor ask me, was if I was a farmer. Because as a group, they get this more than anyone else. I ask why is that, exposure to chemicals. I said why don't you go public with that, he laughed and said I'd get my pants sued off, by the chemical industry. Years ago, I read about a lady, who lost her entire family to cancer; she was the only survivor, and they lived in an agricutural community. I believe, Drowning G. that not too many years ago, too many children from the central valley contacted leukemia, the rate was very high.
Everyone, eat lost of fruits and veggies as they are high in phytochemicals that fight cancer, like blueberries, all berries and eat a variety of colored fruits because many medicines come from plants, just like the recent cancer drug that came from the yew tree. Spread the color around, and if you can, buy organic produce, grains and even meats. Chemicals and pesticides are stored in the fat of animals. When you eat meat, you are ingesting the chemicals stored in their bodies. Remember, many medicines come from plants, the natural chemicals in them are very good to fight cancer.

No cell phones around back then nor water bottles but pollution is more likely the environmental trigger in my estimation along with the unknown factor of genetic mutations. No family history . Perhaps we will never know why someone gets cancer and the other doesn't. Either way , it is a cruel parasite that forever changes the not only the person but their families as well. Each anniversary of my diagnosis is a day of thanksgiving , each test to make sure it hasn't come back is a reminder , you are forever changed . You never get used to it. Proving environmental risk is a statistic , it never speaks to the impact of this monster. It is a way the government tracks cancer clusters but offers no solutions to the problems. Can I point to a place or exposure that triggered mine? It could be just about anything because we always find out afte the fact. There is no comfort in thinking it cannot happen to me because it can to anyone , anytime , any place. Be diligent , do not take no for an answer , get check up's even if it isn't convenient. Take care of yourself first the rest will follow.

I hate to quibble, but all the things you listed are technically "elements" rather than "chemicals". It's sort of a semantic thing, but all those elements exist in nature, so therefore they would be considered perfectly "organic" if found in soil. Sure, they're all toxic in too high of concentration, but on the other hand, copper for instance, is necessary in trace amounts in order to be healthy.
When the article speaks of "chemicals" I think we ought to take that to mean artificially created crap with multi-syllabic virtually unpronounceable names like dimethyl dihedral triaptomine, or whatever the heck DDT stands for (I just made that up).
Point being, if you want to eat healthier food, look on the labels of what you buy and try to avoid "chemical' ingrediants. The other stuff, lead and cadmium and such is often present in the environment around us, esecially in paint pigments. Anybody here an artist?
What this article fails to mention which is vitally important is that unless you are a savvy and eco-conscious consumer ( which the majority of people are not ), you are using, consuming and exposing yourself to HUNDREDS of chemicals every single day in everything from your toothpaste and deodorant to hair dyes, shampoos/conditioners, make-up, virtually ALL beauty/personal care products, your PROCESSED Frankenfoods, your laundry products, household cleaning products, lawn and garden products , and the list goes on and on and on and on.
These products are virtual "chemical cocktails" loaded w/carcinogens, immune system toxins, reproductive system disruptors, endocrine system disruptors, organ system toxins, nervous system toxins, allergens and so forth.
THIS is the reason why sustainable agriculture, environmental awareness, organic farming and organic products and natural non-toxic alternatives are IMPERATIVE to our health. If each and every one of you took the products you use every day and looked up EVERY ingredient in the list on the label, you would see that almost every ingredient is a toxin of some kind.
I suggest joining Food and Water Watch, The Organic Consumers Association, The Grist and other organizations which are fighting against companies like MONSANTO, Big Pharma, Factory Farm operations, industries that privatize public resources like water etc and start supporting The Environmental Working Group, The Union of Concerned Scientists and other groups who are looking out for our health and safety because the Gov't and the Capitalists won't.

The only way to prevent cancer is to limit your exposure to toxins and most Americans are oblivious to the dangers of the products they use and the foods they consume on a daily basis. Most of these chemicals react w/other chemicals, many are also bio-accumulative so they build up and store themselves in your tissue over the years. Is there any wonder that CANCER is the 2nd biggest killer when over a person's lifetime they are constantly exposed to 10's of THOUSANDS of deadly chemicals ?

Just like Dioxin that has been banned, but, it has a half life of 5,000 years. So basically what's in the ground is still as potent as the day it was sprayed originally. Not all organics are grown in the ground. Many are grown in above ground enclosed beds using sterilized soil, others are grown by hydroponics which doesn't require soil. Regardless, I'd rather take my chances with Organic than ever eat or use anything conventional. If there are only 2 ways to go... I'll choose Organic.

SMC Somewhere recently I read that housewives have a high rate of cancer. I think it read, a higher rate than women who worked outside the home, and they mentioned cleaning products as the agent. I use only natural household cleaners. Sometimes, I use only white vinegar and baking soda. I purchase a natural glass cleaner and use more natural detergents and soaps.

Every time you turn around they are backpedaling and minimizing the risk of cell phone radiation and then a new study that comes up is "inconclusive' or possibly.. I have a friend who because of his line of work and just the fact that he was a chatty Kathy was on his cell phone constantly. He ended up with a tumor right behind that ear. It was thankfully benign and they removed it. I don't buy2/3 of cancers being preventable with lifestyle choices, the cancer forums are full of people who did everything right, diet, exercise, non-smoking, drinking in moderation if at all.. they still got cancer. My mother was one of those people. I don't think there's any way to avoid it . It's genetics , stress, the luck of the draw in so many instances. I just know it's a horrible disease and we are obviously not winning the War on cancer any more than we are winning the war on terrorism.
ledgeroo, I don't think you realize, how dangerous our world has become. Pesticides only came into usage after WW2. I am elderly, and I remember my family discussing that people didn't contact as many cancers back then. Indeed, childhood cancers is a 20th century disease.
Our foods have been processed, the natural nutrients removed and artificial vitamins, chemicals and food colorings added. Herbicides only appeared on the scene recently. Look what Agent Orange did to the Viet Nam veterans. Even their children are at a greater risk of contacting a multitude of cancers. Pesticides and herbicides are everywhere. I can go to the store and buy an endless amount of them and spray them all over as much as I want, and my drift can even impact my neighbors' properties.
There are no restrictions on these, and they are essentially poisons. For instance, they use cigarette nicotine to euthanize small animals. If an agent will kill a smaller animal, my bet is, it's not very good for humans, and children are small humans. Children's lungs are tinier and more susceptable to poisons and chemicals.
I haven't used a pesticide in over 30 years and will never, even though my neighbors buy barrels of it, spreading it around like it is really good for you. And, think of all the vile stuff in car exhaust!!!! If you close up your car in a garage, it will kill you in just a few minutes. Car exhaust contains many chemicals found in ciggies.
No I do realize it and agree with you.. our world has become a cesspool of poison. Some hidden, some not. We've run out of fresh air, clean water. On the molecular level, cancer is an aberration at the genetic level which causes changes in the delicate regulation of cells so that they divide out of control, along with other aberrations that cause this proliferating mass to survive (such as angiogenesis, inducing blood vessel construction to feed the rapidly growing mass, or metastasis to allow cancer cells to bud off and spread to other regions of the body).
There is no single component to cancer, and thus there will never be a single one-shot cure. It's kind of like a car, to use an analogy. Your car is "sick". You take it into the mechanic. Part X is broken. If it was bad, Part X broke Part Y, and it costs twice as much to fix. Or ten times. Or the car is junked beyond all belief, even though only a handful of parts broke and the rest of the body is otherwise healthy.
There's more than one way to break a car, and sometimes lemons come from the factory broken and predisposed to disaster. How you choose to live is basically up to you. You may assume that cancer is inevitable and do stupid things, or realize that your risks are higher and attempt to live in a lifestyle that puts off the inevitable as long as possible.

I am an asthmatic. I am concerned. There was little or no mention of household chemicals. Billions of gallons of toxic chemicals are washed down the collective drains of households across the globe and adversely affecting the ground that grows our food and the water supply. Many of the household chemicals designed to kill germs are in fact toxic. For decades environmental groups have pointed out the dangers of the formaldehyde, phosphates, ammonias, bleaches etc in these widely advertised cleaning products. When my routine mammogram produced less than desirable results, I was counseled to remove toxic chemicals from my home. I took the advice, somewhat leery of the dangers but it was all confirmed by the garbage collectors. When I put out the huge box of cleaners and household toiletries, I thought they would consider it a bonus pack to take home to the wife. NOT so! A note was attached to the box stating that they would NOT pick it up. It was Hazardous Material and had to be taken to a Toxic Waste Dump! I know that the world has evolved in a way that our exposure to what may be harmful, but I look at what rarely existed 40-50 years ago. S.I.D.S., Cancer in babies, Chemical disorders in children, the type II diabetes. Depression back then, was, "It's raining outside and can't go our and play".
As I'm writing this response, I'm having doubts as to whether it will get posted because much of what we hear in the media is filtered through the guys that finance everything; the advertisers. It is my "Leading Amateur Opinion" that the majority of household product companies are swiftly” going-green" to stay ahead of the rapid increase of public's awareness.
The dangers of the toxins found in most of the products that we as consumers know and trust have been battled for decades. For every lobbyist in Washington, there is a Mega Manufacturer spending millions of dollars fighting against the change. Since we voluntarily buy the product and do not ingest household cleaning products, it's low on the list of concerns. Thank you for forums like this.

Asthma has been on the rise, up and up, especially in urban areas and cities. An asthmatic reacts to certain chemicals. While others develop cancers and other diseases, the asthmatic is the canary in the coal mind. Great Post, Sharon, very recently I read something that homemakers had a higher rate of cancer because of cleaning products. I buy only natural products [the others give me asthma]. Actually, white vinegar and baking soda are pretty good, natural cleaners. I use natural laundry soaps and detergents.
Other good naturals are lemon, salt.

There are a number of states that DO NOT require the person who is taking your xrays to be licensed. They can be of great harm to a patient. Either through of providing a lack of shielding, not using the correct techniques and giving a person too much radiation, or improper positioning - requiring films to be repeated and giving the patient addditional dose.
Often in those states the person who cuts your hair is better regulated.

Cancer has only been an issue for the past 30-40 years. In my grandparents' day cancer was not a major killer or concern like it is today.
Back in the "Old Days" a lot of death certificates merely read "Natural Causes", because we didn't have the technology to pinpoint things like we can now. So I'm sure a lot of people died of cancer and didn't even know it.
Old, well, in my lifetime, I witnessed the cancer rate climb. It has increased dramatically in my lifetime.
