Two county hospital workers were placed on paid leave after anonymous complaints that they set up a makeshift beauty salon for fellow employees in an intensive care ward for newborns, authorities said.
Investigators probe beauty salon in baby ICU

they shouldn't just be on paid leave they should be fired! An ICU NICU is absolutely no place to be setting up a salon... outrageous! why weren't they tending to the newborns?
...unless you are black, an illegal mexican alien, or muslim
And these people are suppose to be intelligent????
Something tells me somebody or 2 didn't get invited to have a French Manicure.
I don't understand the concept of paid leave. Yes, you should receive the salary if you are innocent, so first complete the investigation and then pay them retroactively. As of now, the person gets paid to take time off even if he/she is guilty. Just plain stupid!
Not enough info on this story....how long was this "salon" in business in the NICU? It sure doesn't leave me with much confidence in regards to this hospital! And surely there must have been other staff that knew this was going on?? And with the cost of medical care that they charge patients?? How could a physician partake of the offered services, too??
So much for the Hippocratic Oath, when doctors are participating in releasing toxic fumes from acetone around babies who are in intensive care, huh?
Wow Paid leave! This means they get paid not to go to work. Sweet deal. Maybe they can run their salon now full time since they don't have work getting in the way. Also I would like to see if after they get fired, if they have to give back their salaries since they were not doing their jobs and supplementing their incomes on top of it!
Maybe some community service would be in order, perhaps providing services like manscaping to prison inmates! Maybe some of the prison bitches need to have their nails done.
I am an ICU Nurse. They should all be fired. Licenses revoked. permanently. no second chances for these a- holes. also no help of any sort from the unions on this one.
I AGREE 100%
They had time for manicures and waxings? I'm working at the wrong hospital. Though rarely happens,I have pulled 12 hour shifts with no meal or potty break.
If my child were staying at that hospital, I'd pull him/her out immediately and put him/her in a hospital where babies are actually being monitored and corruption does not run rampant. If no child has died as of yet, it'd be a miracle under these irresponsible peoples' watch. Paid leave for people proven to not be doing their job? Good lord, the people who decided to give them paid leave are just as moronic as the ones operating the salon, the ones attending the salon, and the ones turning a blind eye to it and not reporting it to the authorities.
How WOULD we know that no one had died? Think about this, WHO is going to fill out the death certificate? Does the term "cover your own ass" mean anything?
What the HELL were these people thinking? The chemicals used in manicures and eyebrow waxes can have a bad effect on healthy adults, let alone on newborns with compromised immune systems. I agree with monkeyonatypewriter - the two employees who "ran" the salon should be fired and never allowed to work in a hospital again. However, there should ALSO be severe punishment for the doctors and nurses who took advantage of the services.
At our hospital, staff are texting and surfing every free second. It bothers me.
I have thought that a performance based system might weed out the duds. Lotta people getting paid well to be lazy in this world.
There are plenty of good hard working people who are out of a job that would be happy to replace them.
..
This is seriously MESSED UP.
These people are so stupid. Honestly, it's beyond words.
I can't figure out when these people would have the time to do this. What happens if a child starts crumping??? Sorry, my nails are wet???!!!!
The story claims that they are understaffed. Obviously, understaffed from a legitimate stance. I've worked in hospitals for 16 years - most of it in ICU's - I have NEVER seen anything like this go on anywhere. If they want to play "beauty saloon", (and yes i meant to say saloon) stay home and stop putting patients at risk. The fumes from nail products make adults sick. I can only imagine what risk that garbage would pose for a newborn, let alone a compromised one.
And MD's were involved in this as well??? I hope it is Bye Bye to all of you slugs involved!!! You're all a disgrace to the medical profession.
"The first concern of the hospital is always patient safety and quality of care," she said.
A Hhospital, Company or any organization is made up with the human factor.
All the goals and mission statements in the world are meaningless unless you have the full commitment of people. People are emotional, self centered but mostly, greedy. Just like a company. We all want to get the biggest bang for our buck with the least amount of effort.
America has been complacent, fat dumb and happy for many years now. Even in the good times we got away with as much as possible. Now that our economy sucks we can use it as an excuse for our behaviour.
Continue to articulate all the Mission Statements and political promises you want. Many of us think its all BS anyway.
Have a good day.
I had to laugh when I read your thoughts about mission statements. I was just thinking the same thing recently. TOTAL BS. Just something to keep the executives busy and appear to be productive so that they can justify their fat checks. Nothing more than lame, embellished poetry.
I use to work at H.P. when they said they said the company was going "green". They made everyone in the building have a trashcan side saddle to collect all types of paper, to be recycled.
One night, I noticed the cleaning crew (not H.P. employees) dumping not only the trashcan, but the side saddle collection box, into the same large trash can. I asked them if they fish out the collected paper for recycling and was told NO!. They thought it was pretty funny that for 6 months, all us H.P. goons were running around, sorting our own as well as the next guys trash, in a feebly attempt to recycle HUGE amounts of paper. When their instructions were, "it all goes into the dumpster!."
In my opinion the words "Mission Statements" is a politically correct phrase for "BLOW JOB"
Outrageous!
This is an investigation? It's more like 'We've got the answer', and the investigation will prove we're right. No harm, no foul.
No wonder the employees behave like morons, the Administrators are morons.

maybe what goes on in a lot of NICUs would surprise people. at my daughter's, while i was there- in a very prosperous philadelphia suburb, the nurses ignored babies crying for 10 minutes plus, while they shopped for christmas presents online- all while i was watching them. one said- i wonder what's bothering him (a baby who weighed about 2.5 pounds and was crying very strongly for what felt like forever). there was no possibility of me staying there with my daughter and i got the impression they didn't even like me visiting so i'd go home every night knowing that she was being left to cry while they sought bargains on macy's website...
the answer to what did these people do if their nails were wet and a baby started crying? i'd be willing to bet serious money that they just let it cry until it stopped. who cares that such behavior is known to contribute to failure to thrive and the babies you're dealing with need to "thrive" so much more efficiently than most.... at the end of the experience, one said to me, "now she's your baby."
