Federal regulators announced another recall of children's jewelry with high levels of the toxic metal cadmium Monday, also saying they've expanded their investigation in an effort to keep dangerous items off store shelves in the first place.
More toxic jewelry for kids recalled

Best Friends is a very popular item. I am trying to encourage my granddaughters to like the more expensive jewelry. Cheap isn't worth it.
I know girls/women like jewelry, but it is only worth something because somebody else tells you it is. If you were alone on an island, what is worth more. A thousand pounds of gold or a thousand pounds of food? In this economy jewelry should be at the bottom of the list of things to buy. Just my opinion.
When will our Government ever shutdown Imports from CHINA down...Jewelry, children's toys, other products...I thinks the Chinese do this crap on purpose to try to kill us off!!!!!!!!!
I don't trust the Chinese as far as I could throw them!!!!!!!!!!
"Michael Gale, the executive director of the Fashion Jewelry and Accessories Trade Association, has told several state legislatures that are considering strict limits on cadmium in jewelry that if those laws pass, it might be impossible to put any lower-priced children's jewelry on stores shelves where those laws apply."
Oh my, the horror. Our poor children won't be able to wear cheap toxic jewlery. Why even bother going on living?
Beware of the 3 Cs;
I agree with you Snuffy. I do have a bigger concern though. Why isn't the World Trade Organization doing anything about the fact that this kind of thing is going on? China is a part of the WTO. It should be held accountable to following the standards of trade, etc., that other member countries are.
I hadn't even read the story yet, just the headline--my first thought? Made In China? Big surprise. And no, madam, I'm not psychic.
"it might be impossible to put any lower-priced children's jewelry on stores shelves where those laws apply". So these monkey business men would rather poison our children !
Retailers should be held liable at this point. They should have their items tested prior to putting them on the shelf. That would solve the issue because they could not claim they did not know.
Hold importers responsible and make them pay for the testing. If they want to buy cheap toxic stuff to save dollars, then maybe making them pay for all the testing will cut their ugly profit just enough.
"...the chain released a statement saying the items were safe,.."
Safe why? Because Claire's said so? Oh that's reassuring. Let me run out and buy a hundred Best Friends bracelets.
Kids chew on jewelry. They put it in their mouths. They suck on them. They could easily swallow loose pieces. Bottom line...cheap crap jewelry made in China (ok, almost anything made in China) is probably toxic for kids and if you include toothpaste and drywall, it's toxic for adults as well. But here's the problem most Americans have. They buy this useless crap for their spoiled kids because it's cheap. Americans love cheap goods made in third world countries. But we also love to say 'buy American.' Ok, you can't have it both ways. If your flyswatter is made in China, it'll cost you 3 bucks and it might last a couple months, a year if you don't swat too many flies. If you want a quality fly swatter made by an 'American' (i.e., an illegal alien working in an American factory or a union worker from Fly Swatter's Local #309, who has full benefits and a pension plan) you're gonna pay $50 bucks for your fly swatter. So, if you're tired of China trying to poison your little darlings then stop buying cheap crap. If everyone stopped buying cheap crap, the cheap crap factories would eventually stop making it. I admit, they shouldn't be putting toxic metals into kids' jewelry, but hey people....China poisons their own children with melamine adulturated milk. You think they're gonna stop and think twice about poisoning some rich Americans who can afford to throw away money on cadmium laced crappy bracelets? Get a life.
It's comes to this point: When it comes to our children all products made for them should only be made in the US. Haven't we had enough of these product recalls by now?
China and toxic chemicals shipping to the u.s. no way, i'm beyound words, I just can't believe that items coming in from china would have toxic chemicals on them, just keep these words in mind "never fear while obama is here". need I say anything else.....lmao!
Why does everyone blame China? Claire's and every other American company that outsources or moves their operations to China knows exactly what they are putting on their store shelves - and only after a problem is brought to the public's attention will they care because by then, the ends have already justified the means.
In the current system where businesses are shut when shareholders don't make MORE than they did last quarter, this will only continue to happen and will only get worse. Parents will continue to purchase poison baby formula because it's cheaper and companies will continue selling it because they can get away with it. But regardless, we're nearing the breaking point, and I'm going to have a good laugh when this system collapses on itself due to the incredible amount of greed fueling it.
Cases like these are a prime example of how our leaders don't care about our safety and only care about helping multinational companies make huge profits. Yeah I know we like to bash China for their toxic products but this is happening in our own country too with our own products, worse still with the food we eat that is grown HERE!! I suggest americans research why there are salmonella or e-coli outbreaks almost all the time, why the FDA has less power than ever, why cigarette manufacturers don't need an ingredient label, why the government subsidizes soft drink companies so that now a 2 liter bottle of soda is 4 times cheaper than the same amount of fresh orange juice. Anything that comes from overseas should be inspected anyway, where are the inspectors??? Our leaders are the cause of this, not China. Open your eyes people!! Time to wake up!
Both the US government and China are to blame. Don't let China off the hook. At this point, everything from China should be suspect. "Let's see, should we introduce poisonous lead and cadmium into children's jewelry? Sure, why not?" Not to mention pet food, milk for their own children, drywall, etc. They make choices about what to put in their products and at some point you have to admit it looks deliberate. At least some of these choices must be under the radar and the US government has to play catch-up after the damage is done.
Oh no, it wasn't my intention to let China off the hook, since they also agreed to bend the rules just as the American executives they do business with, to sell us their toxic crap. I just really hope EVERY american wakes up to this issue and severely limits on buying these types of products to send a message to these a - holes.
"CHINA AGAIN?" No correction, China still, when will America quit importing their garbage? Before world war two it was the Japanese, now another trying to kill our children!
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the Headlines.. China .. oh those Chinese are so naughty. Snap, they got us again. Eh.. yeah we need to make sure this cr*p isn't hitting the shelves . Kids buy cheap jewelry and as parent, I never would have thought to buy my kids expensive stuff when they were young because they'd probably end up losing it. In fact, whatever happened to those friendship bracelets they used to make out of yarn. or plastic canvas... did the kids get too fat and lazy for that. For that matter, whatever happened to gum wrapper chains... and macrame.. remember macrame...
Is China doing this on purpose?
Ah, my finger is turning green, maybe I better check my wedding ring to see if it was made in China.
It's simple for me and my family - we will NOT go into a Claires store again. I've always wondered about their products but I usually give in to a couple pairs earrings, etc. Claires hasn't done enough to stop this from being in their products, this has been going on for awhile now. It's not worth the risk.
I don't allow my children to buy stuff at the Dollar type stores, either; those places are full of China made crap.
Hummm more worthless crap from china, kinda makes one wonder how many politicians have "MADE IN CHINA" stamped on their worthless backsides.
Dae Yeon is actually a Korean company. Ironic, asian companies outsourcing to Asian countries. I guess Koreans are too good to poison with cadmium.
What in the world do children need jewelry for, anyway? Does jewelry make them more popular or acceptable or worth more as a human being? If it take crappy chinese jewelry to make a kid feel better abotu themselves, it's too late. Besides, what do you EXPECT from the @!$%#ing chinese? People who buy their cheapo crap (usually from WalMart) get what they deserve.
Some kids, you know, MAY ACTUALLY LIKE JEWELRY. People have been wearing jewelry for centuries, just not toxic crap.
everything that comes out of china headed to the united states is poisened. its no secret.
But, if we stopped getting junk from China, were else will our cheap stuff come from?
The CPSC identified the manufacturer as Dae Yeon Industries Corp., of China.
the only thing worse than an American corporation is a Chinese one!! ba$tard$
