How is ground beef safe to begin with? So now kids have a 10% less chance of getting sick by E Coli or salmonella? What's wrong with feeding kids more grains, veggies and fruits instead? Why do we need to fatten them up?
Yeah, they can stop buying sick dairy cow meat from Chino CA, one of 100 best places in the US to raise your kiddies, as long as they stay out of the barrio, (stay north of D St.)
The school lunch program has been used by the meat and agricultural industry to get rid of their excess products they could not sell in the market. The food the children eat in school is sub-standard, are GMO (genetically modified organisms), and do not offer healthy alternatives. In France, the food is required to be organic and locally grown (which benefits the local economy), and a professional chef cooks the food. Unlike the states, where anyone can work regardless of experience. What children eat in comparison to food, is disgusting. I remember the disgusting cardboard pizza, the horrible tasting hot dogs, but I the banana and apples were 1 dollar in my school. In this country, "mystery meat" is just another thing that will "build character" and truly shows the negligence children face. Ofcourse serving children organic food, locally grown, and hiring real chefs to make real meals and not high-fat, genetically modified, microwaved food with e-coli and salmonella would require taxes to raise, but most people would prefer to pay for taxes for drones, military, Haliburton, but our kids,,, no!
Sounds like a German plot to me. Can you say Hitler? I knew ya could. You're just another disgusting reason why the US should never model itself after the EU. So we're feeding our children genetically modified meat? Wow. Unlike the rest of the world, the US is feeding "mystery meat" to our children. Listen German, I recommend you get some help. Professional, that is. If you recall, the US defeated Germany back in the day. Perhaps you should explore YOUR roots before you make asinine comments about mine. Haben Sie einen großen Tag dumm!
Actually, you ignorant fool, The name German is not used in Germany, or Deutschland, its a Spanish name! If i'm going anywhere you should say go back to Mexico! Ignorante. Yes, GMO are backed by the US agricultural industry alongside the chemical companies with intense use of herbicides by the Monsanto corporation.
The food system in the US and the conditions of the meat factories are deplorable. Mostly illegal immigrants work in the sub-standard meat factories, and its not only their legality that is ignored, health hazards are plentiful and horrible sanitary conditions are a root of the constant salmonella and e-coli outbreaks and recalls in the meat markets. Even more disturbing is that rats, cockroaches and even human parts, are grounded through the meat. Sadly, the government subsidizes these meat corporations to the extent that a pound of meat is cheaper then fruits and vegetables!
You can hire real chefs and have the best ingredients and in America the kids will still throw it all away and oink out on the cookies and ice cream. That is simply how American kids are. It is real easy for you armchair cooks to think it is easy but you have not been in a school kitchen have you? Try it for a couple years and then tell me what you think! I worked in one for a couple years and yes, I have training. Dealing with the back stabbing from all the employees and the ones who refuse to do certain jobs because "they aren't slaves" is a real pain. Move on to antiquated equipment that there are no funds to replace. Little money to buy good food and it will give you an idea what you are up against. The very limited amount of time you have to cook good food that the kids throw down the garbage disposal anyway. Or decide to get into food fights with..... Most of YOUR kids aren't interested in eating good healthy food. Because YOU parents send them to school with a wad of cash and tell them to buy something good. And what they buy is hamburgers and pizza and ice cream and junk food. If we don't have it, they don't eat. Then we hear about it that we are not doing our job because the kids come home hungry. We can't do a salad bar because there is simply no time. Most of the time the kids rarely get more than 10 minutes to eat, sometimes less.
Organic isn't necessarily better either.... if you use real organic fertilizers, they often have e coli bacteria in them. Animal waste is used for organic farming. You have to really wash all fruits and veggies well if you use organics. Where is the time for that in the school kitchen? And if you want such good food there, try paying the staff more than minimum wage! You are getting what you pay for..........
Definitely a great perspective from a person inside the school cafeterias. Its true, that the minimum wage workers are given there is little incentive for some. Also its true that children do not decide to eats what is best, since sugar and salt is so addicting. However, since schools are controlled environments, if the schools only provided healthy alternatives, forget the cookies, then the students will not have an option. For example, there is large movements for all schools to get rid of sodas and instead provide more healthier drinking alternatives, such as juices and water. These schools do not provide soda as an option, and consumption of healthier drinks has increased. Lastly the Center for Disease Control and Prevention studies have found that the likely hood of e-coli does not increase with organic or conventionally grown meat, fruits and vegetables. However, the problem with foods not grown organically are the hazardous chemicals used as herbicides, insecticides, and the use of human growth hormones which are harmful to the animals grown, to humans, and the environment.
German, you are right. Kids are fed whatever slop the meat and dairy industries can unload on the schools and the taxpayers foot the bill. I substitute teach a few days a month and 90% of this food ends up in the trash anyway. The kids drink the milk or tea and pick at their trays for 30 minutes and then empty everything into the garbage cans on their way out of the cafeteria.
As a vegetarian, I am horrified by the suffering of the animals which are killed so their bodies end up in a landfill. The animals suffer, the environment suffers and no one except the meat and dairy industries profit from this waste.
Dear God.. how bad were the standards to begin with and what is that about "Certain trimmings" will not be used.. Well great, the beef is a little safer, bully for our kids.
Perhaps the parents should just pack Junior’s lunch for him since our government is doing such a questionable job providing free and reduced price lunches.
German, no debe luchar en el lodo. Deje les en el lodo.
Why do they feed kids ground beef anyway? What's wrong with a healthier diet? I really question these nutritionists that work at schools. Do they know anything? Americans eat too much meat to begin with, why isn't there more grains, fruits and salads? Why don't they just feed them a big hunk of a t-bone for lunch.........
Why don't parents LEARN take the time to pack a wholesome, healthier lunch for their kids rather than rely on the crap served in school cafeterias? I have made lunch-to-go every day for six years for my children - organic & completely vegetarian. My kids love the food & rarely ever have they come home with remnants of their lunch, tell me that they couldn't eat it and they are not allowed to trade foods, etc. Good eating habits including learned tastes for the healthy foods start early with the PARENT.
As a career teacher, I packed my lunch daily. When I had cafeteria duty, I was surprised how many of the kids actually cleaned their plates and went back for seconds. I was also surprised at how many of my colleagues bought the school lunches nearly daily. The meals must not have tasted too bad, but I'm picky. That said, yes, more money in districts will have to be funneled into food services now, shorting other areas of need. Either taxes will eventually be increased to pay for the higher food standards or other programs will be cut.
Here goes the federal government messing around with our kids again.

Hmmm... Gee.... Illegals? Maybe? Naw? Couldnt be...
Wow, didn't realize how bad the country was during the Bush and Reagan years.
Nothing has changed for you has it?!
And we all wonder why we are dying, this is disgusting.
Food Inc, a documentary that came out last fall discusses how our food is grown, processed and affects society in many ways.
So who/what is gonna make schools safer for ground beef this fall? Just askin'......

jeep: Instead of calling German names, why don't you rebut his arguments, preferably with facts.

Why not better ground beef standards for all of the country. Not just kids.
