I feel as do many others in Britain that this MMR problem does exist. That there are many, many more autistic children since the MMR vacine was introduced is a matter of statistical record. I believe that the medical profession has just closed ranks on this issue because any admission that the vaccine was in any way unsafe would leave the drug manufacturers and the entire medical profession in a position of culpability. Why is it wrong for parents to have these vaccines administered singly over a reasonable period of time? I wouldn't subject my dog to an enormous cocktail of simultaneously administered vaccines let alone my child!
I know a lot of people 'feel' this way, but the studies have shown conclusively that there is not relationship and we also know that Wakefield's study is unreliable.
There are two reasons that the 'cocktail' is not split up. 1. Testing shows it to be safe as is. 2. Many parents would not be happy to have to pay for more doctor's visits to have the extra shots. Then, see #1.
This whole issue is just silly, and Wakefield and his ilk should be ashamed of themselves. Even worse, the parents should know better.
Yvonne Aston said: "That there are many, many more autistic children since the MMR vacine was introduced is a matter of statistical record."
Many more studies have been done since Dr. Wakefield did his and all of them disagree with his assessment. Vaccines do NOT cause autism!
Dr. Wakefield should have his license taken away in this country so he can't mislead any more parents.
What he has done is totally unconscionable! I hope one of you parents who has a child that gets polio sues the crap out of him.
By the way, more children are being diagnosed with autism because the doctors are using different diagnostic techniques and are diagnosing children as having autism that would never have been diagnosed that way 30 years ago.
Besides that, not giving vaccines is much more risky!!
If you think that's not true, it's because you have never seen the devastating effects of measles, whooping cough or polio.
A culture that does not accept difference, is a culture in big trouble. Right now that appears to be most of the world.
Vaccines are good for some, deadly for others. Penicillin is great for some, deadly for others. Peanuts, bee stings, tobacco, lots of drugs... It's a never-ending list. We are each different.
There is no one single truth. Adults must be free to make their own decisions, and free to decide for their children.
The issue is that Autism has this shroud around it that its one form of it, usually the non communicative type. The autism spectrum has different branches each with various conditions, you have pdd nos which is mild and does not fit the true criteria of autism but is close enough to fall under the spectrum. You have Asperger syndrome where kids are usually bad with social interactions and reading social cues but incredibly intelligent, I had a co-worker whos son has aspergers and was a freaking genious was a part of Mensa and everything as a tween.
The rise is since we have better screening and definitions of autism(Today versus 20-30+ years ago) as well as a broader spectrum of which varying forms kids have can fall under. What may of been viewed as odd behavior, anti social behavior as developmental disorders now fall under the varying ranges of autism. There is a lot of study's with contradicting answers about what causes autism, and it really rests as where you the parent wish to subscribe. Just take into consideration that foregoing childhood vaccines will inevitably lead to the potential for a rise in outbreaks in once well controlled diseases or conditions as well as the severity of them. Said diseases we are vaccinated against are of the weak variation so they never really gain a foothold in our population to mutate since our body is immune to them. If they did get into our society and had the chance to mutate due to an un-vaccinated population you would see a stronger string form putting the larger population at risk. By no means am I suggesting to have kids vaccinated or against it, but keep in mind the larger repercussions of actions in our lives which can impact others.
Mercury at ANY level in the blood INSTANTLY destroys brain cells. For most people the blood/brain barrier keeps the mercury out... but for the unlucky, the effects are certain.
Why USE mercury at all? Why are tiny levels of Mercury in fish and seafood dangerous for infants while it's OK to inject it directly into their blood stream 2, 3, and 4 shots at a time?
rjkardo not so fast, "studies have shown conclusively that there is not relationship" between vaccines and autism is not true. In fact, it was data assembled by the vaccine industry that showed such a strong link back in the 90's that they had a large scale strategy meeting on how to quash the information. Numerous other studies have shown such a link. They are determined to make Wakefield an example to prevent more studies in the area.
I hate to break it to you but there are no extensive studies saying that all Vaccines are safe. There has only been 1 study done on MMR and that was about it. The issue is this. Before a child is 2 years old they will get a total of about 20 different vaccines Imagine what kind of havoc this is causing on the child's immune system. You factor in the fact that many children are fed formula instead of breast milk (breast milk helps build there immune system) we can start to picture why this is an issue. you must also understand that Vaccine are full of preservatives even vaccine with out mercury are replaced with things like Aluminum WHICH WE KNOW DESTROYS THE BRAIN. A single shot my be harmless but when you get them all it adds up to be a lot of Preservatives. Its silly to think this would not harm a child's brain function.
more children are being diagnosed with autism because the doctors are using different diagnostic techniques
Do some research There are country's that stopped using our Vaccines and there autistic rates have dropped how do you explain that? Just google it and you can see for your self.
unfortunately the way our system is set up drugs and chemicals are considered safe unless proven otherwise. Which is a sham in its self. So the burden of proof is on us if we think its harmful not on the companies that create the product. Of course for every study that is done showing its harmful they just fire back with a study that shows its safe. Basically it goes no where. When it comes to my kids as far as i am concerned its harmful until proven safe. But to each his own.
hakstarr: Please name the countries that have a direct, correlated study(ies) between vaccines & autism!
P.S. for those who insist on using mercury as a "trigger" for autism, it hasn't been used as a perservative for a number of yrs. Something ELSE is causing autism.
Just wait until many find out that 'ethical' research published within The Journal is done by drug companies yet credited to a doctor. In other words, the doctor does not actually do the research yet drug companies use a Dr's name. The best Ghost Writing big pharma can buy.
And BTW, The Journal has admitted to this type of fraud to have been happening for years.
2. Many parents would not be happy to have to pay for more doctor's visits to have the extra shots. Then, see #1.
But many, many parents, whether they are or aren't parents of children with autism would gladly pay for additional visits, especially if separate components (and separate vaxes period, instead of 3-4 in one day) were available because one can then track reactions much better, which ultimately can lead to even safer vaxes. As someone mentioned above, some people react to things that others are never affected by. Some children will never have an issue with a vaccine, others will have mild reactions and still others will have severe ones. Injecting children with multiple viles at one time leaves it virtually impossible to track which one caused the reaction, whatever that reaction may be.
Single and Multiples should be made available to every parent for him or her to decide what is best for his/her child.
While I am not a automatic supporter of the vaccine-Autism link there is something causing the increase. The large increase in the number of cases cannot be attributed only to better diagnoses techniques. I would expect to find a combination of factors that causes the increase such as ..........the vaccine plus sugar overload plus food preservatives. Any one of them by itself might not cause problems but in combination could plus as someone else pointed out every ones system is different.
Sounds like a extreme reaction to me. Honestly the people who deny a link between autism vaccines sound much like people in the early days of AIDS who denied there was a new sexually and blood transferable disease. And they said much the same thing about there"not being enough research" to confirm it existed. Well it existed whether people wanted it to or not. And alot of the denial has to do with money. Just look here in the US where it seems about every month there are ads for lawsuits against drug makers for harmful or deadly side effects of popular drugs. And frankly I think the companies know about the harmful side effects but figure that lawsuits will be less than what they make if they rush the drug to market as soon as possible.
1. People were suing based on 1 study and getting away with it?!?!?
2. It took this long to definitely refute the original study?!?
3.Why hasn't the Dr. been brought up on charges for his unethical treatment of children?!?
At the time, Wakefield was working as a gastroenterologist at London's Royal Free Hospital and did not have the ethical approval to conduct the study
4. Why is he studying the vaccines when he is a gastroenterologist?!?
Obviously, this man is interested in fame and money. He is not the type of person that should be making far reaching "assumptions" about the health of others. I am sure there will be thousands that will continue to hold on to Wakefield's study, rather than investigate the results of the credible studies.
As a father of an autistic kid, I am very glad this @!$%# is on his way out.
His "research" was bunk, nobody has ever reproduced his results and the cries over vaccines have stopped progress on finding a cure as money is spent elsewhere.
But people will continue to believe this crap, somehow hold on to the knowledge that this @!$%# was somehow the lone savior for autism. Everybody else is wrong, only he is right, only his research is right.
As the father of an autistic child I'm with Chris in PHX. My daughter is now 6 and WE DID NOT HAVE HER VACCINATED. That's right, she has autism and did not receive any vaccines until we had a clear diagnosis of autism. Tell me how a vaccine she did not get caused her to have a disease caused by vaccines.
The truth is that vaccines do not cause autism. We need to find out what does, but unfortunately the scientific community has been derailed on this matter for 12 years now. 12 YEARS! This is the same doctor who claimed that the cause of vaccine was "leaky bowel syndrome" making parents feel as if they were causing their children's disease by feeding them wheat products. This has also been proven to be complete nonsense.
Time, energy, and lives are being wasted because of this man.
As I said, my daughter is 6 now, had this man never made these outrageous claims for his own profit, chances are that possibly someone would have discovered the true cause of autism and maybe, just maybe, my daughter would be a normal happy little girl right now with a bright future.
Instead I mourn the loss of the daughter who will never have a boyfriend for me to disapprove of, never know the joy and misery of a first love and it's loss, never get married or know the unconditional love a parent can have for their child. Every day I mourn the daughter I have lost and I worry what will happen to her when my wife and I are gone from this Earth.
So all of you hanging on to this notion that vaccines cause autism JUST STOP, what you are doing is delaying the inevitable. Science will find the cause of autism, and when we know the true cause only then can we know how to prevent it or maybe even treat it.
All the time you spend working on your conspiracy theories and forcing science to prove you wrong yet again, is time that could be spent working to find a true cause for autism. And maybe your children's children wont have to go through what my family has to experience every day.
Pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars on vaccines, while Dr. Wakefield has no particular financial interest in his theory, and appears to have done well meaning, if incorrect, research to back it up. In addition, other physicians have made terrible mistakes in the development of vaccines, responsible for the deaths of 100's and sometimes 1000's of children. (See John Kolmer and the history of polio vaccine.) Does anyone find it strange that Dr. Wakefield is being barred from practice, while the other physicians who admitted they were responsible for their patients' deaths receive no punishment whatsoever?
Roy Baby, sorry, you are entirely wrong -- you might want to read a bit about Wakefield first.
Wakefield was being paid by a legal consortium (solicitors) which had a vested interest in proving vaccines were responsible for autism when his first paper came out AND Wakefield had been personally hired by Richard Barr of King's Lynn two years prior to the Lancet paper for a case against drug companies manufacturing MMR vaccines.
Now, here's the BIG kicker, Wakefield sought patents (primarily number 9711663.6) in June of 1997, for a "SAFER" single measles vaccine.
The ONLY way his measles vaccine could have any shot at being competitive would be for the main vaccines to be shown to be doubtful regarding safety or efficacy.
I think you miss understood what i said There has only been 1 study done on a vaccine and thats the MMR vaccine which was done here in the US to show that it is safe. No other vaccine has had a signifcant study done nor has all the vaccines together before that 2 year period have been done. They only did the 1 study on MMR they should have done extensive studies all the vaccines even all 20 doses that are given before the 2 year mark. But they did 1 study on MMR and said all vaccines are safe. That is my point.
I had a book at one time that referenced dozens of studies linking the MMR vaccine to sudden onset Autism. The reason you don't know about them is because there is an active campaign to suppress them as they do not support the medical community leadership's overall position on the matter.
There are many more than "1" study on this issue - on both sides.
P.S. for those who insist on using mercury as a "trigger" for autism, it hasn't been used as a perservative for a number of yrs. Something ELSE is causing autism.
This is a misleading because there are still some vaccines that use mercury as a preservative. Also there is mercury present in the Vitamin K shot that is routinely given children right after birth. If it is below a certin percentage then they are allowed to say it does not have mercury but when you read the ingredients i was surprised to see it was listed.
What other logical possibilities are we being given to the 6,666% increase in autism in such a short amount of time (a time that the amount of mercury is being injected into our children because of the significant increase in amount of vaccinnes being recommended and/or required)? The government hasn't historically taken the "just deny the problem" approach when it comes to putting them financially liable, or they simply decide for us that the good outweighs the bad. Not like our government denied the very existence of agent orange, or refused to tell our Desert Storm soldiers what they were injected with (to try and protect them from chemical-warfare) now that these people and even people that lived in the same household as these soldiers are not allowed to donate blood for the rest of their lives!
Nonsense. The mercury in the shots was ethylmercury, not methylmercury. They are very different. Not to mention, no tests show any relationship between the shots and autism.
The issue with autism has to do more with diagnoses and not the shots. Besides, autism rates are still high and mercury is not in the vaccinations (except some flu shots).

It's still in more shots than people think. You can find a list online.
Also, a university in Canada recently proved exactly how mercury kills brain cells. It is very interesting.

Interesting link, but pics. are from 1993-1999-definately NOT recent scientific research.
There are people who believe just about anything they can Google on the Internet, and you can 'find' anything you want. To some of these people, whether it's actually 'true' or not only depends on if it fits their particular conspiracy theory'. I once wrote a piece on the Internet about how I discovered a method of time travel and how I actually did it. You would not believe me if I told you how many replies I got from people who really believed it. Ahh, the power of the Internet on the easily baffled among us!
Unfortunately, we live in a physical world where the laws of physics always hold true, and since the laws of physics dictate that scum will always seek to rise to the top, the truth is always lost when people believe what is said by those who have sought out the top positions of power.
There are entire books siting hundreds of studies that link autism to the MMR shot. These doctors may or may not have acted appropriately when gathering data. That should have nothing to do with the study results. These doctors were banned and the others recanted their positions on the papers conclusions because they stood against the "authoritative" medical authority. The same thing has happened here in the United States. Doctors who publish papers questioning the safety of the MMR shot and some other vaccines are persecuted to the Nth degree. This may be because almost every parent of an autistic child whose symptoms developed within a week of getting one of those shots would sue the doctor that administered it, the facility, the AMA and the WHO for supporting it and covering up the research showing the link, and the vaccine manufacturers who fund those organizations. The whole suppression of this link is a massive conflict of interest that puts children at risk. One study I read indicated a link as high as 1/10000. I would not fly on a plane with those odds, why would I put my children at risk? When properly treated, these diseases are rarely fatal and result in a stronger immune system that the shot can provide anyway.
The odds are more likely that your child will die from a disease they were not vaccinated against then they are to get autism from a vaccine. Consider the fact that I have a autistic daughter who never received any vaccines until after she was diagnosed with autism and you'll understand that your logic and the studies it is based off of are wrong.
Consider the fact that I have a autistic daughter who never received any vaccines until after she was diagnosed with autism and you'll understand that your logic and the studies it is based off of are wrong.
Well get her vaccinated and then she'll be protected won't she?
Let's not forget the recent Flu shot that also has a Mercury base. Several people that have received that shot as adults developed or revealed various neurological disorders within hours of the shot. But the "medical" authorities say it is safe? It was produced too fast, was not properly tested, contains organic mercury compounds, and most of the doctors and nurses that I know personally have said you are better off getting the flu. - they did not get the shot themselves.
Netzar, the nurses and doctors telling you that are clearly idiots.
Also, learn about mercury before writing again on the topic. Study the difference between METHYL and ETHYL mercuries and then find out which the body can handle, which pass the blood-brain barrier, which one is in the vaccines and at what amounts.
Several hundred million people got NO neurological disorders within hours of the shot.
You see, that makes the correlation -- around zero.
You mention "citing hundreds of studies"... give us ONE.
Hey idiot. Check your science. The blood brain barrier is not fully developed in infants and young children. Many things that do not cross the adult blood brain barrier do cross into the nervous system of infants and children. The science sheep that are following the herd have not done studies on ETHYL mercury and don't want to. Why don't you inject yourself with ETHYL mercury if you think it is so safe???? It is also possible for one chemical to breakdown or metabolize to another in the body. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want any form of mercury injected into me or anyone I love.
Nice try Liz... already knew about the developmental bio part -- it's part and parcel of any general medical curriculum -- so 'done that'. From my understanding, it's fully formed at around six weeks of age (40-50 days). In young children, barring deformities, it should be wholly intact (well, as intact as the system gets).
Now, which vaccines are given to children in the first six weeks?
Hep B, right? If you get the Recombivax or Engerix (the most popular ones) then there's no thimerosal.
Well, that's it really for the first 40-50 days.
At 60-ish days you could then get the hib, rotavirus, dtap, pcv and polio. Those are all thimerosal-free too.
So, what precisely are your scientific concerns?
It IS safe.. that's why I DO take the vaccines, so, again, nice try.
You acquire MORE mercury than a vaccination every month just driving, or in a week if you eat tuna... Soda, ketchup and even bread have mercury.
Well, if the claim is that accumulation is the problem, and it is, then vaccines would be off the hook, since they don't use much mercury, and are rather rare, especially in comparison to other sources.
Tuna is a great example, if you assume that even 5 percent gets into the blood, then you see that simple dietary and environmental factors out-number vaccines each and every week (depending on whether you eat tuna -- many don't -- me, I gotta totally be in the mood -- rather have salmon or swordfish, about as bad Hg-wise but better flavour IMO).
Further, you'd see a HUGE increases of ASD-like in coastal or places like Japan.
This repeated denial of any connection with Autism Spectrum Disorders being related to Childhood vaccinations and the use of the Themerosal "Batch Preservtive", which is 49% organic mercury -- one of the most toxic substances found in nature proven to negatively effect nurological development -- flys in the face of parent-after-parent discribing the SAME profound change in their childs development at THAT VERY TIME THE DRUG IS GIVEN?!!???!!! I'm with Teressa, and call Me a "Conspiracy Theorist" too! Interestingly -- yet again! -- this subject matter comes on and moments into the discussion My "Digital" TV goes "Weak Signal"...I don't doubt there's any coincidence for Me living near the CDC in Atlanta! This "Connection" needs some REAL "Air-Time" NBC..."Sunshine" is the best dis-infectant ; )
Rjkardo, your post here is extremely misleading. Are you asserting that the organic mercury compound, ethyl mercury, is not toxic?
Then, are you willing to be injected with 1,000 mcg of ethyl mercury (adjusted for weight) in the form of thimerosal in a saline solution on four ocassions spread out every two months?
Methylmercury (MeHg) the kind of mercury found in some kinds of fish (tuna, swordfish), and ethylmercury (EtHg) the kind of mercury found in thimerosal are different compounds (just as are ethanol and methanol), although the compounds are “close chemical cousins.” Still, the toxicokinetics of methylmercury and ethylmercury are different. None of this means that ethylmercury is a benign substance. In fact, ethyl mercury -like all mercury compounds- is highly toxic (and in extremely low doses). Because “dose makes the poison,” at what dose is injected ethyl mercury “safe” for (a) neonates and infants or (b) adults? That has never been determined. No safe limit for the exposure to ethyl mercury via injection has ever been established by the EPA (or any other agency).
“What are the neurotoxic effects of Mercury? This depends on a number of factors. The easy answer is that it depends on: species of mercury, route of exposure, and dose (e.g., acute dose, subacute dose).
The more sophisticated answer is that it depends on: species of mercury, route of exposure (oral ingestion, vapor inhalation, injection, etc.), dose (acute dose, subacute dose), dose frequency; age of person who is exposed (this is critical, the developing CNS of an neonate or infant is more vulnerable); and every child’s or person’s individual ability to excrete heavy metals.
A persons’ individual ability to excrete heavy metals can be profoundly effected by stress, illness, concurrent exposure to other toxins, total body exposure (the excretion capacity is not infinite), and genetic factors. With regard to the latter, for example, there is a growing body of medical research indicating that a subset of the pediatric population exists who have a reduced ability to excrete heavy metals due to less efficient methylation cycle and glutathione production due to genetic factors.
Thimerosal injected into the body is metabolized or degraded into ethyl mercury (and thiosalicylate). Some of the ethyl mercury is then partially excreted from the body and some of the ethyl mercury is degraded into inorganic mercury where it is deposited in various organs, including the kidney and the brain. Inorganic mercury is highly toxic to the brain.
Yes RJ Kardo, while Burbacher (2005) demonstrated that methylmercury clears from the blood faster than ethylmercury, this does --not-- mean that it is leaving the body. It is, in fact partially being deposited in the brain and other tissues. Burbacher et al also demonstrated that EtHg converts into inorganic mercury in the body much more readily than MeHg. This is critical because inorganic mercury is deposited in the brain, where it is effectively trapped. It take years to be excreted, if it is in fact ever removed. The accumulation of inorganic mercury in the brain is associated with increased numbers of microglia, decreased numbers of astrocytes (brain/neuroglial cells), and higher risk of autoimmune reactions.
According to Clarkson (2007), “methylmercury and ethylmercury distributes to all body tissues, crossing the blood-brain barrier and the placental barrier, and ethylmercury also moves freely throughout the body.”
Burbacher (2005) found that thimerosal is distributed to the brain much more readily than methyl mercury. Burbacher determined that injected ethyl mercury cleared from the bloodstream much more rapidly than ingested methylmercury. However, his study also found that a larger fraction of the ethyl mercury remained in the brains of the macaques, where it was converted to more harmful inorganic mercury.

I would add this study by a Canadian University that shows the first ever actual breakdown of brain cells after exposure to very small amounts of mercury.
There are very few drugs that I can tolorate I have adverse reaction to just about all drugs. My Doctor has made the statement that the very drugs that are supposed to keep me alive are killing me. Hence I don't take drugs of any sort. Having said that I know that I am not unique and there must be several thousand possibily millions others like me in the world and is added to every day especially children. My Father-In-Law had to take blood pressure pills which in turn reduced his production of insulin turning him into a diabetic. The side effects of the insulin required additional pills and those pills required another set of pills and all this just to keep him "Alive?"
My biggest fear is that the Pharmist are trying to get the population of the world hooked on "Legal" drugs so that they can control the population and they have the Governments backing hence the attacks on those questioning the drugs ability to cure.
Yvonne...We tried to NOT DO JUST THAT by insisiting he be administered "Individual Vaccines" vs. such "Cocktails" as you discribe...thus perhaps subjecting Him to even MORE Themerisol for it's use as a "Batch Preservative" in child vaccines? The marked-change in what was otherwise "within the 90th percentile" of his development began to occour within 18 hours of the MMR Vaccine being administered...the fever, the shrill crying, the listlessness, etc. But how can one account for the (Scoff!!!) relative fact that only 1 in 175 will develop an ASD? It's my belief that some -- for fundamental DNA or metabolic differences perhaps? -- are more succeptable to being impacted by this literal poison being used -- FORCED upon Us, really! -- to "Preserve" the shelf-life of Batch Vaccine...and I strongly believe there need be a study of THAT for what can then be gleaned of this malaise on -- for the most part Our "Male" children.
i think its safer to do single doses because of the space between each dose. Plus MMR has to have a whole lot more preservative then single doses because of the way its put together to have all 3 in 1 shot. I have also noticed a connection with celiac and gluten intolerance and Autism. If you notice most children who are autistic and go to a gluten free diet seem to start doing better. My youngest has the celiac gene and her immune system is very sensitive. its possible that people who carry this gene are more prone to having more harmful side effects by things that effect there immune system like vaccines.
I am a physician with two children with an autistic spectrum disorder. I will continue to believe that THIMEROSOL caused this disorder until the CDC, AMA and US government give me conclusive evidence that something else in the environment caused this neurologic condition. These groups are unable and unwilling to propose another cause for this epidemic because they know what caused it. They have removed THIMEROSOL from almost all vaccines. They just want all of us who have been devastated from this condition to accept their lame denials of the obvious. They all demanded that we inject ourselves and our infants with one of the most deadly neurotoxins known to mankind in doses hundreds of times above safe levels and now want to deny any wrongdoing. Shame on the US medical establishment.
I agree 100%, My now 18 year old autistic son was developing fine, within the 90% of development and then just stopped at 18 months. No one will ever get me to believe that the MMR shot did not do something to him or trigger something in him.
Some of the so-called 'medical experts' who piously deny any link between mercury, squalene, adjuvants, and autism (because that's what we're really talking about) say these conditions have "always been with us". They retort that it has simply been better diagnosis in recent years that has led to the startling rise in autistic children. Baloney. If this were the case, where are all the 40, 50, or 60 year-old autistic people? The unfortunate truth is corporate and government leaders do not care about you. They do not care about your family. And they most certainly do not care if any highly profitable business they run has a deleterious effect on your child's health. They will continue to lie about the link between these known toxins, and vilify any ethical medical professional who points such out, until the checks from big pharma stop coming.
In a highly telling and ironic development, Dr. Julie Gerberding, the former head of the Center for Disease Control, the same outfit that tried to scare you into getting a swine flu shot this past year, recently took a lucrative position with Merck heading their-- wait for it-- vaccine division! Heckuva job, Julie.
By the way, when was the last time the government or a major corporation told the truth about anything important?
You are so right on; you've done your homework. Only Big Pharma is allowed to do the test research. And wait, aren't they on the controlling staff of CDC and WHO?
Sorry Sitcom, actually everyone is allowed to do the research. Big Pharma does provide some funding, but in other countries, where a great deal of the research is also done, there is almost no such influence - and it's not astonishing that the results are the same as the US studies.
Sorry, H5 -- you apparently ask questions, but don't want the answers, or you'd have found them already.
The incidence of adult autism is the same as that in children. So, where are the adults in the 30s, 40s, and so on with autism? Gee, if only there was a study like that... Oh wait -- googling adult autism shows about nine of them.
Here's a summary finding "Using the recommended threshold of a score of 10 or more on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 1.0 per cent of the adult population had ASD. Published childhood population studies show the prevalence rate among children is also approximately 1.0 per cent."
They even break it down into decades, ie., adults in their 30s, 40s and so on.
Like every real study done by actual scientists, this debunks the autism-vaccine myth - again.

Way to go man great information i had no idea! here is the link! No freaken conflict of interest here!!!!
Why dont someone do a study to first pretend there is a link between the vaccine and the austistic kids, and then use same statistics to find a link in the austistic kids to help identify new at risk kids. Then use these findings to separate at risk kids and just administer vaccine to the rest whom are not at risk.
It may sound crude and cruel but if it saves millions this method is the best short term solution until a link between the vaccine and autism can be confirm with a scientific process.
1) Dr. Wakefield (MB BS FRCS FRCPath) was a research gastroenterologist from the UK.
2) Dr. Wakefield is a husband, a father, and interestingly the son of two physicians himself. His mother was a GP and his father was a neurologist.
3) Andrew Wakefield’s training in medicine was solid.
Wakefield graduated in 1981 with a degree in Medicine from St. Mary's Hospital, part of the University of London, one of the finest medical schools in Europe. He then trained as a surgeon and qualified as Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1985. His specialized training and residency in GI surgery lasted seven years. He eventually developed as a specialist in inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn’s disease. At the prominent Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London, Wakefield was a Senior Lecturer in Medicine and Histopathology and served as a key member on the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Study Group, University Departments of Medicine and Histopathology. Approximately two years after the 1998 Lancet paper, Wakefield was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2001 in recognition of his published research.
4) Dr. Wakefield is (in)famously the lead author of an “early case series report” (not a study) published in The Lancet in 1988 that reported that Lymphoid Nodular Hyperplasia (LNH) and enterocolitis were found in 12 ASD children.
5) There were two key co-authors of the 1998 Lancet paper. Professor John Walker-Smith and Dr. Simon Murch. Walker Smith acted as “Senior Clinical Investigator” during the generation of this case series report. He also served as a “Senior Author” of this paper.
6) Dr. Simon Murch was at the time of the 1998 Lancet study, Senior Lecturer in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Royal Free and University College School of Medicine. Dr. Murch is now Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at Warwick Medical School.
7) Professor John Walker-Smith served as “Senior Clinical Investigator” on the 1998 Lancet paper. His reputation is even more impressive. Walker-Smith, Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Gastroenterology, is perhaps the most eminent pediatric gastroenterologist in the world. He is essentially the founding father of the discipline of Pediatric Gastroenterology worldwide. Go ahead. Google this guy.
8) Professors Walker-Smith and Murch are obviously eminently qualified pediatric gastroenterologists. Personally, I find it unlikely that they participated in malfeasance during the generation of this case series report. In addition, personally, I find it unlikely that Professor Walker-Smith, as Senior Clinical Investigator, would participate with Dr. Wakefield in egregious misconduct during the execution of this case series. .
9) ALL the parents of the children who were the subjects of the report published in 1998 in The Lancet support Andrew Wakefield and have called him a kind and caring physician.
10) Isn’t it interesting that the sole source of the complaint that led to the GMC proceeding against Drs. Wakefield, Walker-Smith, and Murch was by Brian Deer. Who is Brian Deer? What are his medical qualifications? Who does Brian Deer work for? Has Brian Deer ever written articles in The Sunday Times advocating for the pharmaceutical industry before? I’ll let you go look for yourself and reach you own conclusions.
There are two sides to the Dr. Andrew Wakefield story, and our major media isn't giving us both. If you want to know the other side, go to www.cryshame.co.uk
Let us pay attention to what happened in the UK with Dr. Wakefield. If scientific inquiry must proceed along politically correct boundaries or be censored--if the media thinks it is doing us a favor by only telling us what it thinks is in our best interests, a free society is in jeopardy, in my opinion.
No. My name really is John, though actually spelled Jon. And I really am a life long resident of Calif (near Sacramento). I have worked in the medical field at the masters level for 20+ years (in a primary care clinical setting). I am a parent. I have no child with autism. So, I have no horse in this race.
Instead of sarcasm, why don't you do a little research into who Dr Wakefield, Prof Walker-Smith, and Dr Murch are. You might be surprised.
as aparent whose son was killed by another "safe vaccine" the whooping cough or pertussis vaccine, i can uneqiviqually say that the mmr is the cause of this huge spike in autism.unfortunetly in the vaccine buisness is much more cost effective for the drug companies producing the vaccines to fight the obvious by lobbying lawmakers for more mandated vaccines and providing their own doctors with(studies) money reassuring parents that the mmr is safe and there is no correlation between autism and the vaccine. nothing could be more outrageous.they did the same thing with the pertussis vaccine for forty years and the relationship to suddden infant death syndrome.since the implementation of the far safer acelluar pertussis in 1998 sids has fallen off the charts-but of course were told there was no correlation.well it killed my son and thats a fact. and if your child recieved mmr and developed autism than the vaccine caused it.lets not sugarcoat the obvious-the federal government is to blame as much as the drug manufactures producing the vaccines-they can not be trusted-and thats not to surprizing isit..? were on our own when it comes to vacccines and our childrens safety. be diligent and be careful.
as aparent whose son was killed by another "safe vaccine" the whooping cough or pertussis vaccine, i can uneqiviqually say that the mmr is the cause of this huge spike in autism.
Sorry about your son, but I can also unequivocally say that you are a misguided idiot.
There are NO STUDIES out there that conclusively proves vaccines are safe. Maybe a couple solely on the MMR, or maybe selectively on Thimersol. There are none out there done on the entire recommended vaccine schedule. NOT EVEN HALF.
We have all been duped into Herd Immunity to which Loius Pasteur even admitted is WRONG.
What's even worse, some of the current vaccines are old and antiquated. No longer needed. But hey, they make big Pharm richer.
So you really trust the FDA and influenced American Assoc of Pediatrics to really take care of your child over their own pockets and prestige?
Last year there were a comparable number of deaths from Toyota owners (52) than those killed by Hep B vaccines (46) given at birth. So you can chase Toyota into congressional hearings, but you can't chase down Merck. Guess there's no reason why since they are protected by our government from being sued. Who's safer now, them or us?
18 deaths in the UK in the 10 year vaccinating period after Dr. Wakefields paper. 10 deaths in from 1999-2008. Less measles deaths AFTER Dr. Wakefield's paper.
I will add… large groups of under or un-vaccinated children exist in various well-educated, progressive demographic communities in California such as Marin County, Berkeley, Sebastopol, Westside of Los Angeles; and the outcome has been zero epidemics or unusual outbreaks of measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria or pertussis in those areas in the last 10 years. And absolutely zero deaths. Zero.
In addition, large numbers of under or un-vaccinated children also exist in the large, well-known Homefirst medical practice in Chicago; and in home school, Waldorf School, and Christian Science communities across America. Ditto for the Amish (they vaccinate at a much lower rate than the general population).
Again, the outcome has been zero epidemics or unusual outbreaks of measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria or pertussis in those communities in the last 10 (or 20) years. And absolutely zero deaths.
Now, let's look at the incidence of Autism in those communities -- it's the same! The Amish, have ASD occurrence rates at the same as the general public. And with the benefit of outbreaks of things like pertusis. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17133167 or http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/296/16/1960. Their rates of vaccine uptake is generally 80% at present with certain areas far more compliant.
Did you read the article? Major cause was low vaccination rates in index-patient exposure locale (UK) during an active outbreak (7400 infected). Contributing factors are large families in smaller "packed-households, and children seating arrangements at school (makes sense since most of the Rockland infected were around the age of 14, and most of the others were 14-18 ).
The vaccination rates were below "herd-immunity" and below statewide uptake rates.
Why this country is in decline. Too many of these people who say "I know better than scientists! What I "feel"is ALWAYS right. Scientists and experts are ALWAYS wrong". People who refuse the vaccines for their kids are guilty of child endangerment!
Bartman, but that's just it. Not everyone agrees about vaccine safety in medical science. I have worked in the medical field all my life, I know this first hand. Vaccine safety is one of the most controversial issues in medicine of the last 50 years.
It is a simple fact that further studies investigating vaccines as a causal agent in the etiology of autism are supported by many prominent autism and medical experts such as Bernadine Healy MD (former head of the NIH); Irva Hertz-Picciotto PhD, MPH (UC Davis MIND institute); Michael Cuccaro PhD (associate professor of human genetics at the University of Miami); Jon S. Poling PhD MD (board-certified neurologist, Johns Hopkins); and Thomas Insel MD (the nation's top autism research coordinator, Chair of the federal government's Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) ---not just Jenny McCarthy.
In addition, all of the following prominent mainstream-trained MDs, MPHs, and PhDs have expressed concern about vaccine safety. And they have all strongly advocated pursuing research that investigates possible environmental triggers for autism --including-- vaccines.
Epidemiologist Craig J. Newschaffer PhD (Harvard/Johns Hopkins); epidemiologist W. Ian Lipkin MD (John Snow Professor of Epidemiology, and Professor of Neurology and Pathology at Columbia University); epidemiologist Robert Byrd MPH PhD (UC Davis MIND Institute); Michael Cuccaro PhD (associate professor of human genetics at the University of Miami); Dave Weldon MD FACP (and former congressman, R-FL); Judy Converse MPH RD LD; Lauren Feder MD; board-certified pediatrician Paul Thomas MD FAAP; board-certified pediatrician Jerry Kartzinel MD FAAP; and board-certified pediatrician Robert "Bob" Sears MD FAAP.
Why this country is in decline. Too many of these people who say "I know better than scientists! What I "feel"is ALWAYS right. Scientists and experts are ALWAYS wrong". People who refuse the vaccines for their kids are guilty of child endangerment!
Don't worry about Bartman too much. He's just an old angry crusty fellar. He has too much time invested in his life to do any real self reflection. Don't go messin around with his views and changin thangs. Dern kids these days.
Bernadine Healy is one of the most prominent women in medicine in the US. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar (summa cum laude). She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School (with honors); performed her residency at world-renowned Johns Hopkins; is a full professor of medicine; is the former Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and currently serves on the advisory committee to the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Dr Healy is certainly --not-- anti-vaccine. She is saying that there may be a subset of the pediatric population who are genetically more susceptible to neurodevelopmental insult from vaccination for reasons not fully understood (though less efficient glutathione and methylation cycle is a leading hypothesis). Anyway, many prominent in medicine including Healy believe this needs to be investigated further.
“I don’t think you should ever turn your back on any scientific hypothesis because you are afraid of what it might show.”
Bernadine Healy MD. See one of the most prominent members of medicine in the United States state that the autism population has --not-- been properly studied. Dr. Healy supports research into environmental causes of autism ---including vaccines---
“I don’t think you should ever turn your back on any scientific hypothesis because you are afraid of what it might show.”
Bartmann...did you miss the part that I am a board-certified physician? I am a member of mensa and AOA (those that graduate at the top ten percent of their medical school class.) I, also, graduated from one of the top residencies in the country.
My question to you is what research have you come across that proposes a viable reason for the epidemic in autism in this and other developed nations? And don't hand me "the increase in diagnosis" ridiculous arguement.
Second question, would you be willing to inject your infant or new grandchild with the now well-documented amount of mercury that our children received in the 90's while you call us "guilty of child endangerment?" I think all of the medical researchers, polititians and drug company executives that have vehemently denied the relationship between thimerosol and autism should be made to line up and have all of their off-spring injected with the same amount of thimerosol injected into our children. Maybe they could do this on national television while telling us how safe it is.
My question to you is what research have you come across that proposes a viable reason for the epidemic in autism in this and other developed nations? And don't hand me "the increase in diagnosis" ridiculous arguement.
I don't think the increase in diagnosis argument is ridiculous. It is still a possibility. The bigger question is why do you feel so strongly about vaccines? What studies are there that show a causation between vaccines and autism? And why, if it was the older vaccines, is the rate of autism diagnosis still going up?
How apropos that a doctor who has been discredited in another country takes up residence and practice in a country that wants to install tort reform. Doctors of Andrew Wakefield's reputation are the very reason why Americans need open-ended legal recourse for shoddy, despicable practice since there are no judicial overviews conducted by the feds, state gov'ts. nor the AMA. Without legal recourse, there would be little ramifications placed upon these sleazeballs.
In addition to "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses ..." on the Statue of Liberty, we should add " ... and your doctors of ill repute ..."
I don't trust everything the government, big companies, the pharmaceutical companies, and some doctors say. That being said, I don't believe they would administer vaccinations knowing they could cause autism. There are a lot more children being diagnosed with autism today, but we must take into account that the methods of diagnosis have changed over the years. Autism is a disorder measured on a spectrum. A lot of kids on the high-functioning end of the spectrum today would not have been diagnosed years ago. They would have been seen as "oddball" children. Thankfully, there is more help available to high functioning autistic children because of our increased understanding of the disorder. We still have a long way to go. To all parents of children with autism, I deeply admire and respect you for the strength you have.
Thank you for the treatise on "autism spectrum disorder." Unfortunately, the number of severely autistic children, not just the "oddball" children has increased dramatically. Try another argument.
The government and pharmacutical companies didn't know that they were injecting children with overdoses of one of the most toxic heavy metals known to man, it was an oversite. When thimerosol was first approved, there were very few vaccinations available and the feeling was that such a low dose of this preservative would be unlikely to cause problems. Unfortunately, no one added the cumulative dose of mercury when they began to bombard our children with more and more vaccinations. When the huge surge in neurologic deficits began to be recognized, they added the cumulative dose of mercury and realized that it was more than 300 times the level of safety. The mercury was then removed from most vaccines but it was too late. Ergo, inject infants with huge amounts of a neurotoxin and see a rise in neurodevelopmental disorders....it isn't rocket science.
I'll admit I'm not an expert. We could hope that if there was any correlation between the vaccines and the disorder that the problem has been remedied and we'll see a drop in autism in the coming years. Time will tell. Autism is very mysterious, and we still have a lot to learn.
I'll admit I'm not an expert. We could hope that if there was any correlation between the vaccines and the disorder that the problem has been remedied and we'll see a drop in autism in the coming years.
That is if we took less vaccines. But No! There only more in the pipeline that you'll be expected to take because the "science" says so. And who are you to argue with the god of "science".
Wow.. It is amazing how those who want to stand with the pro-shot side of the argument make lots of accusations and call a lot of names, and attempt to smear reputation as their primary argument. Yet, those against the shots as unsafe have quoted studies, reports, and personal experience... Plus the additional Doctors and scientists that are standing against the shots too... This makes me wonder who is paying the pro-shot people to post... Because their debate skills are dubious at best. For those that believe them are putting their children and grandchildren at risk to something that could be prevented and once done can NEVER be undone.
Point for consideration since the effects where severe. How many cases are there now and when do you stop? Much like the Hep B, Measles, Chicken Pox, there is no end game being considered, and it's way past due. Instead we just keep on injecting and expect those immune systems to never crumble.
Never undone, your right. Ever tried to undo the effects of polio?
The old comparing measles and chickenpox to polio and small pox. It's an illusion and poor argument to get people comply with the vaccine schedule. It's deceptive. This doesn't work on people who keep asking questions and demanding real answers.
Its all risk/benifit now. Those posters that are providers should be well aware of this, and properly inform patients on it. Patients are free to make their choice. Many may claim one would be selfish in not vaccinating by endangering their child or benifiting from herd vaccination, but its a free country. Parents are free to parent right or wrong. Personally, i view the benifit is strong than the risk. Research on this matter shouldn't be condemned, however, it needs to be conducted properly unlike the poor excuse for a provider and researcher that the article discussed.
That's an easy one. Money. Oh, and "we don't want to subject our poor children to more needle pokes than necessary."
Vaccinate your children!!
They are determined to make Wakefield an example to prevent more studies in the area.
getalifevirginia-892326
RJkardo,
This entire affair is ridiculous.
1. People were suing based on 1 study and getting away with it?!?!?
2. It took this long to definitely refute the original study?!?
3.Why hasn't the Dr. been brought up on charges for his unethical treatment of children?!?
Yeah right.
The next year, he did the study.
V. Bevis
V. Bevis
Also it was present in at least one of the widely distributed flu vaccines this last year.

@V. Bevis. Jonas Salks polio vaccine was created in the 50's. That's not recent but does it make it any less scientific research?

This is why. If the mercury can enter your brain, you are toast...
You should inject a can of tuna into your arm.
Any way you want to put it, injecting mercury into your body is not nutritious.
Nonsense. Look up the difference between methy and ethyl mercury.
You have your facts wrong.

Where do you live, so I can know not to be one of your patients.
Only if and when the truth could make them money.
The most famous and recent study was : http://www.ic.nhs.uk/statistics-and-data-collections/mental-health/mental-health-surveys/autism-spectrum-disorders-in-adults-living-in-households-throughout-england--report-from-the-adult-psychiatric-morbidity-survey-2007
(darned, that was a HUGE URL)
Here's a summary finding "Using the recommended threshold of a score of 10 or more on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 1.0 per cent of the adult population had ASD. Published childhood population studies show the prevalence rate among children is also approximately 1.0 per cent."
They even break it down into decades, ie., adults in their 30s, 40s and so on.
Like every real study done by actual scientists, this debunks the autism-vaccine myth - again.
h5mindmentality
Way to go man great information i had no idea! here is the link! No freaken conflict of interest here!!!!
http://www.merck.com/newsroom/news-release-archive/corporate/2009_1221.html
Why dont someone do a study to first pretend there is a link between the vaccine and the austistic kids, and then use same statistics to find a link in the austistic kids to help identify new at risk kids. Then use these findings to separate at risk kids and just administer vaccine to the rest whom are not at risk.
It may sound crude and cruel but if it saves millions this method is the best short term solution until a link between the vaccine and autism can be confirm with a scientific process.
Who is Dr. Andrew Wakefield?
Hi Andrew, did you change your name when you moved from Texas to California???
You might be surprised.
www.cryshame.co.uk
as aparent whose son was killed by another "safe vaccine" the whooping cough or pertussis vaccine, i can uneqiviqually say that the mmr is the cause of this huge spike in autism.unfortunetly in the vaccine buisness is much more cost effective for the drug companies producing the vaccines to fight the obvious by lobbying lawmakers for more mandated vaccines and providing their own doctors with(studies) money reassuring parents that the mmr is safe and there is no correlation between autism and the vaccine. nothing could be more outrageous.they did the same thing with the pertussis vaccine for forty years and the relationship to suddden infant death syndrome.since the implementation of the far safer acelluar pertussis in 1998 sids has fallen off the charts-but of course were told there was no correlation.well it killed my son and thats a fact. and if your child recieved mmr and developed autism than the vaccine caused it.lets not sugarcoat the obvious-the federal government is to blame as much as the drug manufactures producing the vaccines-they can not be trusted-and thats not to surprizing isit..? were on our own when it comes to vacccines and our childrens safety. be diligent and be careful.
as aparent whose son was killed by another "safe vaccine" the whooping cough or pertussis vaccine, i can uneqiviqually say that the mmr is the cause of this huge spike in autism.
Sorry about your son, but I can also unequivocally say that you are a misguided idiot.
Really? Your argument is that Jack is an "Idiot"? Excellent debate technique, that always works well...
This quack has increased deaths from measles, mumps and rubella. Deport him to Gitmo.
And how many deaths, exactly, have occured from measles, mumps and rubella in the entire United States in the last 10 years?
Or... in the UK?
18 deaths in the UK in the 10 year vaccinating period after Dr. Wakefields paper. 10 deaths in from 1999-2008. Less measles deaths AFTER Dr. Wakefield's paper.
That should read 18 deaths before Dr. Wakefield's paper. 10 after.
How many cases of measles were there?
per Merck Manual, measles is a mild viral disease of childhood.
The number of cases do not matter in this instance. The claim is:
Excellent posts Robert.
John, there have been numerous outbreaks, and those are (in every case that I can find ) linked to cohorts of unvaccinated.
Try : http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5708a3.htm (index patient (patient 0) was unvaccinated 7 year-old).
Or this : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1022280/, where the outbreak was 16.400 cases in TWO years, major cause, low immunization.
Olmstead has been thoroughly debunked.
Mumps outbreak in N.Y., N.J. tops 1,500 cases
major cause; high vaccination rate
Did you read the article? Major cause was low vaccination rates in index-patient exposure locale (UK) during an active outbreak (7400 infected). Contributing factors are large families in smaller "packed-households, and children seating arrangements at school (makes sense since most of the Rockland infected were around the age of 14, and most of the others were 14-18 ).
The vaccination rates were below "herd-immunity" and below statewide uptake rates.
I was kidding about the "high vaccination rate cause". It was a play on your "cause".
The issue is the vaccine failed. It gave false security.

I don't think the increase in diagnosis argument is ridiculous. It is still a possibility. The bigger question is why do you feel so strongly about vaccines? What studies are there that show a causation between vaccines and autism? And why, if it was the older vaccines, is the rate of autism diagnosis still going up?
Elizabeth, try doing some research -- for a board-cert physician, that would be referred to as boning-the-CMEs or examining the literature.
Where is this famous epidemic increase?
Wouldn't a survey showing the rates to have been the same for the last 30 years rather debunk your assertion? See the http://www.ic.nhs.uk/statistics-and-data-collections/mental-health/mental-health-surveys/autism-spectrum-disorders-in-adults-living-in-households-throughout-england--report-from-the-adult-psychiatric-morbidity-survey-2007 NHS (UK) study showing that the present rate of about 1 percent is the same as the rate of 30-year olds, 40 year olds and even 50 year olds. And that the gender bias (toward males) is identical as well.
What Board Certified you - The Texas Board of Education (Half of whose members believe in Creationism)??
That is if we took less vaccines. But No! There only more in the pipeline that you'll be expected to take because the "science" says so. And who are you to argue with the god of "science".
Dave-in-Conyers, let me guess...you are a personal injury lawyer?????
Never undone, your right. Ever tried to undo the effects of polio?
Point for consideration since the effects where severe. How many cases are there now and when do you stop? Much like the Hep B, Measles, Chicken Pox, there is no end game being considered, and it's way past due. Instead we just keep on injecting and expect those immune systems to never crumble.
