The rate of severe poisonings from battery ingestion among U.S. children has risen in the past 25 years, along with the growing use of lithium "button" batteries in a wide range of consumer products, new research shows.
Battery ingestion a rising risk for kids

It's only a problem when the battery gets lodged in the esophagus and the electrical current burns surrounding tissue. So, it's apparently o.k. if the kid swallows a *dead* battery, right?
No. It's a chemical injury, not electric, when the sealant between the two metal components dissolves and the reactive lithium salts are exposed.
Try again.
Besides, how long does it need to stay lodged in the esophagus for the sealant to dissolve? The kid would be dead from starvation long before then and the mucous would stop flowing and the dissolving would cease.
No wonder these kids have so much energy! :)
Parents, please coat all button batteries in extra hot tabasco sause.
That never stopped me.
Great article! Without this research, most of us would never have known not to feed button batteries to our children.
Nobel prize, anyone?
You are missing the point entirely. Congratulations.
It is as laudable an effort as what his name, you know - Motormouth, the perpetual campaigner.
Don’t these idiots have anything better to write about?
Yet, you're here to comment on it.
That’s right as one has to actually read an article before one can comment on it unlike some who comment on or criticize articles/legislation without bothering to read them.
As a generally nervous father of three, I have recently found music-playing birthday or Christmas cards, or musical buttons or ornaments, have these lithium cells just falling out the back of them. Usually my three year old is too busy yelling to eat anything but candy, but these things scare me as a dumb design.
So I will assume it may be time to start hording them before the liberal extremist try banning them as they do anything else they think is potentially harmful or God-forbid we may enjoy... If they can't tax it or regulate it they will ban it.
Seems to me the strong tape would better serve if placed over the child's mouth. It could be removed for feedings, but otherwise it would stop the child from swallowing things which might harm it. It would also serve to keep noise emissions down, a blessing to all non-parents who have to be in the vicinity of one of these little terrors.
"In contrast, batteries that make it through the esophagus usually move harmlessly through the digestive tract until they are passed."
And the kids keep going and going and going...
They taste just like chicken.
Its called "Survival of the fittest". Combine a dumb kid with an irresponsible parent and the world is saved from supporting another idiot. We should remove bicycle helmets and cabinet locks to.
I like the comment, "put strong tape over the battery compartment of household products." Yeah right, as though that would really help. My five year old grandson got up one morning and went to the garage and decided to "fix" the hot water tank!! He got a screw driver and removed the valve at the base of the tank and politely let the water out!! When the water began to run he decided he was done and went back to bed. The more startling "help" by this five year old was to help daddy fix the car. He went over to the bench and got the DeWalt drill and commenced to drill holes in the rear fender of the car!!!
Kids are more observant than adults realize. They love to mimic adults actions, so covering battery compartments with strong tape is pretty laughable because to a kid that's the sign to "open here!"
This is a pointless article. Billions of these cells have been sold in the US in the last 40 years and around one death per year. Is there ANY other product as safe?
a Kid I know just did swallow a battery it was in him for a hour and then choked it out. The short time it was in him it burned a holes all over and he was not expected to live for more that 2 weeks. He is doing amazimg but he will have pain for the rest of his life. And for all the comments about Parents not watching there kids all I have to say is that this happened at school and even if it happened at work. Kids swallow things stick things up there noes they fall they break things. EVEN THE BEST PARENTS IN THE WORLD (there is no such thing but I know there are people out there that think they are) have children that have jumped on the bed and fell and bashed there head. IT HAPPENES!!!! Up to the age 13 kids can be stupid. the little boy I know was only 6 and he wanted to light up like a flash light. The reason why this is so important so the parents that didnt know about this have an idea how just a little battery can take your whole world away.
