I've had hypertension for about a dozen years - when it started to go up even on medication, I made a commitment to running 4 miles 3 x a week and doing exercise classes involving weights, pilates, yoga, etc. I average about 5 hours of exercise per week. i have not had to increase my medication since I made that commitment. It really made a huge difference for me at least. I was only 40 when I developed hypertension, normal weight, so guess it's a genetic thing. Exercise helps!! Writing exercise into your appointment books and making a commitment is possible even while working.
Great job l-morse. Nutritional supplements, balanced diet and low salt should help.
l-morse,
Your story is my story; however, because I'm also a type II diabetic, I exercise 7 days a week averaging 7/8 hrs a week. My meds for both diabetes and blood pressure were just reduced: Diabetes drugs from three prescriptions to one; high blood pressure meds-from two meds that both included diuretics to one diuretic and one that is now given to all diabetics because it protects the kidneys.
As you become more fit, have your doctor keep an eye on your bp meds because you may find he/she will have to change them. Recently my blood pressure began spiking upward and it was because I needed to come off of one of the diuretics.
Keep on moving and improving your health.

Diuretics worsens diabetes.
If your don't have severe renal failure, I recommend a combination of Angiotensin II receptor antagonist and Amlodipine(a long-acting Ca channel blocker).
That will be better than diuretics for diabetes.
A renin inhibitor, Aliskiren also has a protective effect on kidneys.
If you stop diuretics, your HbA1c will go down.
Rye bread is better than wheat bread.
Glucose from rye bread is absorbed slowly, and lighten the load of the pancreatic islets.
Dr. Lecter I don't have renal failure and my blood pressure regime was started BEFORE I was diagnosed as a Type II (I now know that high blood pressure is one of the pre-cursors to type II). Unfortunately I didn't begin my "intentional" aerobic walking/exercise/strength program until Feb of 2006, I was diagnosed a type II in 2000 and high blood pressure in 1995. Everything when discovered was over-the-top high. My last three A1c have been 5.8 and I put in at least 8 hours a week of exercise (7 days a week, 3 days of circuit training, 3 days of intervals and one day, my "rest" day of 30 to 45 minutes of moderate walking. I've lost 35 pounds (I'm now @ 135/38 pounds 5' 3") and four dress sizes.
Thanks for the advise - I'm always doing my own research reading on type II and I even have, The Handbook of Exercise in Diabetes. My blood sugar will soar when I worked out and my former Edo couldn't tell me why. All he said was, "Your eating too much carbs," which wasn't true, so I purchased the book, began plowing through it 'cause I have no medical or biology training - looked up everything, got a new doctor who knew exactly what was wrong with me or how my body worked. She took me off of Actos, Glyburide and left me on Metformin only. Best thing that ever happened to me. She does research and has a degree in Nutrition and also specialized in Metabolism.
I wish patients, family, friends and aquaintaces would be more responsible for themselves and get a grip. Exasperation is my middle name in dealing with either the noncompliant chronically ill and /or the meagerly compliant younsters (<30). The gene pool will certainly be thinned if this problem keeps up. As costs soar! UGH!!!!!!
No surprise here.
Folks, our crappy food is what is killing us. Do the research and learn the truth. GMO's (genetically modified organisms) and drug filled meat is BAD for you. They did a study where a calf was fed the milk you buy from the store and the calf died. That should be a huge clue that MAN is goofing everything nature wants to give us.
Drug companies know this, the big four food companies know this (Cargill, Monsanto, Tyson ect) and they don't give a flying rip.
Here is how you fix hypertension, and this will save you thousands of dollars in drug and doctor bills. Eat raw foods, stay away from anything with GMO soy and GMO corn. Coffee and soda are so acidic it's not funny. Acid damages the arteries, veins and heart which leads to heart disease.
Drinking 1 soda takes 33 glasses of water to get the body back to the proper PH from that 1 can.
The AMA states that cancer and other diseases can't live in a PH balanced body. Raw foods and certain herbs can make the body back to alkaline. You just have to do what's best for YOU and dont' count on the drug companies and the FDA (the FDA is all Monsanto former employees and officers), see the move FOOD INC and you will understand the fight to be healthy doesn't rely with anyone but YOU.
Do the reaserch, understand you are being led to the slaughterhouse and drug companies are more than happy to feed you drugs on your way there.
Think I am nuts? Think again... do the research and learn the truth...
I have high blood pressure and I am 5'7" at 127 lbs. I am in good shape always have been but I was diagnosised at age 45, I am 60 now. The only thing that kinda works is exercise and eating right. It keeps it around 130-145 over 90-95. Still too high. I have healthcare insurance and I make about 30,000.00 a year. By the time all the taxes are taken out, and I pay my stupid insurance of 150.00 per month I still have a deductable of 4500.00 per year here in Misery with their stupid non-HMO Blue Cross.. I can't afford meds, however I am happy to report that I pay taxes, get zip for tax breaks and those too lazy to work are getting my tax money so they can afford their meds. I do not mind paying taxes for those who can't, but not for others. Also, my wages have lost purchasing power and my increases of 3-5 % are joke, but bonus and profits are way up.. Killing off the working class ...
