Oh really FDA? Thanks a lot! If you say it's bad it must be bad, and if you say it's good it must be good! Seriously, there are people in the FDA that work for food, pharmacist and other consumption materials that work in the FDA to make sure THEIR products passes through the FDA REGARDLESS of how dangerous it could be to your health. Just look at McDonalds and Hydrocodone...
I have been taken Prilosec OTC daily for over three years since I had two bleeding ulsers repaired, and Prilosec has been prescribed by my physician. I have never had any heartburn and was never told of any bone problems. I'm 57 and work in the paper making industry and have never had any problems. I do have cramps in my legs at night sometimes, but I have stop using salt on my food for years, and I think this is the reason. Is there any other info on this side effect?
I've been taking Protonix or some form of proton pump inhibitor for 10+ years. No broken bones and I'm very active (jog, lift weights, etc). I'd rather have a broken bone than esophageal cancer. Constant heartburn increases your risk of this form of cancer.
I tried Protonix but it gave me migraines. I am now on Zegerid which has worked like a miracle. I am afraid though because I didn't take it for a couple of days and the horrible symptoms came back pretty quickly and I now worry that I will have to be on this stuff forever!
I've taken these PPI's for perhaps 15 years. No broken bones, fractures, etc. What causes this supposed increased vulnerability to broken bones? My DEXA scans are normal...
I took Protonix and then Prilosec for 4 months total, and got vitamin B12 deficiency. The main symptom was neuropathy. It started with tingling in my feet, then spread up from there to my head. It was pretty bad. I kept telling the doctor that this started just a couple weeks after taking the PPI's, but he said they weren't connected. He thought I might have MS or a brain tumor. But later a neurologist diagnosed the B12 deficiency. It took several years of B12 before the neuropathy totally went away. I was in my late 50's.
I have taken Nexium and prilosec otc. Problem is you get hooked once you start because of rebound acid when you try to stop. I do have some hip pain that I never had before. I also take extra calcium and Vit D like we all probably should. Any ideas how to wean off these PPI's??
Wish I knew that answer. I have been taking one form or another for about 15 years and have been on nexium for about 5 years and at times both nexium and zegerid to control the heartburn. It got so bad at one point I could not sleep in anything but a recliner and only about two hours at a time. I went from 210lbs. to 165 lbs. in about a month and a half. I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't got me on Nexium. I also take clonazapam to help calm my stomach and that seems to help a lot. Used to take Zyprexa which helped but seemed to cause weight gain, which also contributed to the acid reflux. For about the last 5 years or so I have been having a lot of trouble with Atrial Fibrillation, that they can't figure out. I think it is attributed to acid reflux, because it seems to kick in about an hour after I go to bed, but the heart doctor has never heard of this so I can't convince him that it is possible. Now they have me wearing a CPAP mask at night to try to control the A fib. I am beginning to think it is just because I have insurance and they want to get the most out of it and if they cure me, they lose a patient and their next car payment.
That's interesting...I have been on Nexium for about a year and had two fractured metatarsals and a fractured heel. Now I am having pain in my knee. Considering how bad my heartburn was, I will talke the broken bones over the high risk of esophogial cancer anyday!!!
The medical establishment is making this connection based upon patients with arthritis who are on heavy doses of NSAIDs who take PPI's in order to minimize the affect of NSAID's on the stomach. Extrapolating these findings to the entire population may or may not be correct.
could the increase in fractures be linked to poor nutrition? Lots and lots of people take heartburn medicine when they really should be counseled to improve their diet
My daughter has Celiac Disease and a problem w/acid reflux and has been using these types of meds for about 5 years. They def. help especially since she is on a limited diet. She also has Down syndrome and her communication is limited but can relay when her stomach hurts, her chest hurts due to heartburn, and recently complaining of foot & knee pain. Nothing shows on any orthopedic tests? How concerned should we be re: the reflux medication, she's been on prilosec and prevacid.
Stick with tried and true Rolaids!

"ANY" medicine that seems too good to be true, always is..........
I have been on it for 4 years. Two years ago, I got a fractured acetabulum (that's deep inside the pelvis socket) from a minor fall.

Thanks for your input. These doctors and so called analysts don't give the total picture. I, too, am afraid of acid reflux.
Seems like your damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Just a thought...
