Why? Because of the tobacco lobby in Washington... so the best we can do is either outlaw lobbyists, vote out incumbents every election, tax tobacco to $20 a pack.
If it wasnt for tobacco, the United States wouldnt be a country. Tobacco, and the US being the sole provider of it during the beginning of our country, gave us a huge source of income since Europe was hooked already on it.
Reggie - And what happened several hundred years ago has some impact on the here and now? "When you know better, you do better" is also a very old saying only it has merit today. I believe several hundred years ago, women were chattel. Would you like to revert to that as well?
I am not a smoker. I do not believe that the tobacco companies are the evil empire as portrayed. I think it is sad that we think that women and girls around the world are more stupid than their male counterparts to make choices for themselves. Tobacco is a legal product that should be allowed to market its product.
I find too much protectionism truly discriminatory. Women are grown ups with minds and the ability to reason for themselves.
It's not whether or not tobacco should be legal, it's the fact that nicotine is added to it.
I quit about a year ago, and man, it was awful. And yes, you do hear quite a bit how it's harder to quit than heroin, and I believe it.
What's amazing, is it's 2010 and it's still legal to add an extremely addictive chemical to a product to not only encourage people to buy it, but to addict them to it.
Imagine if say...Poptarts, started adding cocaine to their product, people would freak. Actually, wait, Coke already did that in the 30s...
Picture all the outrage after 9/11 when we lost 3,000 people and how it changed the world. Now truly think about how American companies are knowingly killing 100 fold that amount a year, legally.
It's all about money. The government makes billions upon billions off of tobacco taxes, it's not like they're going to outright ban nicotine/tobacco products anytime soon. It justs comes down to taking individual responsibility for yourself and your kids. If we start banning everything that's bad for you, I think it's the beginning of an Orwellian society, which is even scarier.
According to the ad, smoking makes you look sexy . You also smell wonderful and have men falling all over themselves to light you up. (sigh)
Truth is, you look like the addict you are, you smell like an ashtray, and the only men who are falling all over you are those looking to bum a ciggie or a light.
It's too bad smoking takes so long to make you sick.
Freedom of Choice - What a person does with their body is their choice. For every person that puts down a smoker they themselves are doing something harmful to their own body. Alcohol, pain pills, polluting the environment with chemicals, driving to fast, get the point. YE without sin cast the first stone!!!!!!!
Money is more important than people's lives. That is big business attitude. I would love to see CEO's and board of directors go to jail for 10-20 years for every death they cause ( That includes Pharma). Maybe that would cut down on the crap they pull. Folks, we have to start VOTING all our corrupt officials out of office. Maybe the we'll start protecting the public.
WHY DO WE ALLOW THIS POISON TO BE SOLD LEGALLY?
It's harder to kick than heroin.

I have two dead parents. You're not terribly bright, are you?

But it's okay to take away freedom of choice as long as its not a choice I would have made.
Screw Tobacco firms..do what I did...go to an electronic, non-toxic form or smoking.
