I used to have strep throat at least once a year and I cannot see wanting steroids for the pain. And I can't imagine a doctor that would offer it unless someone was almost dead. Gargling, antibiotics, tea with honey and rest has always gotten me through it. I've had some very bad cases and here I am, alive at 67.

Steroids for sore throats? I think not. Sprays of an OTC cherry-flavored numbing medicine would seem to work faster and have fewer side effects.
Then to reduce the inflammation: OTC antiinflammatory drugs plus generic Tylenol and soothing drinks and gargles.
If your sore throat persists or worsens, see your physician for tests and further treatment if needed.
