I know for a fact over protective parents kill a kids self confidence. Any situation that seems a little "scary" or "uncomfortable" is generally avoided. Kids never learn to take risks. Any risks at all. Everything from talking to unknown people to "thinking outside of the box" in a job situation.
Then of course there is the psychological damage the kid gets that comes along with thinking their parents have absolutely no trust in them.
