During recessions, idled factories spew less pollution and fewer people commuting to jobs means fewer traffic deaths. Laid-off workers have more time to exercise and cook for themselves and less money to eat out.
Recessions good for health? Maybe not this one

This sounds incorrect, the lady above looks like she was not working out before and is not now, she just cant pay for upgraded medication. Bad Example
I would say that the economice downturn effects people in different ways,
If one was already living within there means and a healthy lifestyle then not much would change
If somebody was obese and unhealthy before a job loss but had no other issues then there health will improve.
If one was unhealthy with many medications and such then there health might get worse
Depends on the education level of the individual as well and hobbies outside the home
Also it takes a while for people to adjust to an environment, The lady from the article may begin to exercise more at some point if she can afford medications and then will become more healthy.
Acid reflux is usually caused by a bad diet and high stress, exercise and better diet may be a solution to a better drug to take
It's always spin, spin, spin.
A long time ago, MSNBC used to be my favorite. Now, I FINALLY, don't watch TV.
More G*d Damn propaganda !! Yesterday it was the U.S./Mexico border isn't that unsafe and today it's the F**KING GREAT RECESSION is good for your health?? I noticed the liberal who wrote it HAS A F**KING JOB !!!
By the way my rant was fueled by the first paragraph which was a little too touchy, feely and seems taken straight from the Dem's "try and weasel our way out of the coming beating" playbook. I've mentioned the fact that less cars and factory pollution are a positive for the enviroment before but that doesn't mean they're a good thing for our country ( money from jobs can buy new cars that pollute less and get better mileage, as factories make the companies that own them money they can be modernized and have less of a negative impact on the environment) !!! But while I see the causes of the GREAT RECESSION as bipartisan the Democrats have had total control for a year and a half and control of Congress for three and a half years with ZERO PROGRESS on ending this economic nightmare !!
One of the most shallow, fatuous statements ever.
This piece is pure propaganda. Fluff and meaningless. A poll created by the media, defined by the media, analyzed by the media and released by the media...to say what?
The assumptions given mean that a perfect economy would have no factories, no vehicles, and no flucking jobs! We would all be in blissful health...somehow.
Will I ever see real journalism return in my lifetime?! I doubt it.
I can attest to that. Less stress. Lower blood pressure. Time to exercise everyday without having to worry about getting home a certain time to go to work the next day. Being unemployed are some of my best times. Of course when the economy is good, you have to make as much money as possible, sock away every dime and working as many hours as possible without any vacations. But, that is just me.
I can relate. I also though...seeing nothing but obese people waddling in and out of grocery stores...perhaps having less money to gorge themselves...maybe people will slim down a tad.
What do you think caused this? Who do you think did it?
Think about it.
I don't think so. People will be buying cheaper, less healthy food.
And this is MSNBC creating work for themselves???
Analogy:
The light switch works just fine the way that it is....go over and turn it off or on.....simple....right?
Why is it in this country we have to decide enough is never good enough??
That it would be much better to confuse what is already confusion even more by taking the stereo apart, wiring the light switch through that so that everytime you scan to an unused frequency the light switch works itself, that it might be a much better way to switch the light......??????
Thinking up irritating ways that may or may not be possibly happening with AMERICAN people whom are waiting to go back to work. Talk about salting wounds that are healing.
Like think positive Dudes!!!
Why not communicate positive stories and ideas like how we can shut down NAFTA, where we can still buy AMERICAN made products that truly support our country and not other countries and what incentives do our law makers have in government to encourage buisnesses in AMERICA to start making AMERICAN again and put AMERICANS back to work in AMERICA, in our own Front yards.
Take the stereo out of the loop, and wire the simple switch back into the wall the way it was designed and intended and let`s get back to it rebuilding this country, one brick at a time if need be!!!!
Stop reminding AMERICA that it has a bad case of the runns.........................................................
I agree!
What an idiotic headline!
Indeed!
Agreed,
Is anything NEGATIVE good for ones health? Is STRESS from any given situation good for ones health? Did MSNBC need something to fill the space with? Maybe they needed to keep MIKE SCHNEIDER from becoming a victim to the recession.
And if MSNBC went off the air, just think how much less electricity would be needed, and how much cleaner the air would be.
Amen, brother!
The same could be said for Fox "News" as well.
Really?!?!?!?!? Ya' think???????
I mean isn't it obvious? People are dying left and right. I've already had to go to two funerals this year. It's not a "NORMAL" recession.
What a complete waste of space on a webpage this article was. I want the 3 minutes of my life back spent reading this BS.
'recession is good for you, because you won't be eating out as much, and you won't die in a traffic accident going to work'
Really? Thanks genius reporter. You also can't pay your mortgage, or your car bill, or your health insurance. Ya think maybe NOT being in a recession is better?
Yet another propaganda piece from the administration that we should be happy the way things are....because they aren't getting better, Any. Time. Soon.
Thanks Bamster.
Dear God, why don't people want universal health care in this country? People lose jobs and lose their health insurance, they can't find work that offers health insurance....just compare the health stats of the US to other developed countries - we are WAAAY down on the list.
I fell years ago, and have severe pain in my knee, but because our ridiculous "system", I can't afford to have it properly taken care of.
Who will pay for it, they ask? Look at the cost per patient in those other countries - again, better health care for less cost because it takes out the private insurance companies' exhorbitant profits. And because people go to the doctor when the problem starts rather than waiting until it is at such a point where it costs a fortune to get it taken care of.
And don't go blaming MSN for spreading bad news - the situation IS bad. The Republicans and power brokers in the country only care about getting richer, and allowed it to get to this point, where the economy and the health care situation is creating a perfect storm.
People don't want the PROPOSED universal health care as Osama er Obama and Pelosi have tried to force it on us. It simply COSTS TOO MUCH! Duh! What makes anyone think, even for a moment, that the U S Government can run anything properly? They never have. Universal Health Care is NOT the answer. Allowing competition across state lines is a much better way to address the problem (there is no one answer w/cures the entire problem). Remember when cell phones were $500. Now they give them away. How did that happen? COMPETITION.
Suicides are up since 2008 and above normal rates for the last 30 years.... just look it up. But I digress... the government has been ineffective at fixing this mess that frankly they created. Like it or not, they must incentivize businesses to get the economy moving again because they can't hire every American.
Question Everything,
Not watching TV is probably the best thing you can do for your health. I've dropped back to basic cable, and soon I will take the plunge to the basic networks and computer downloads. Congrats on you choice.
Well,
Here`s another good aspect......after 35yrs............i haven`t smoked for a month now and i went out and bought a new Schwinn bicycle that is partially made in AMERICA that was on sale and plan on dropping 50 lbs. over the next six months, quit Comcast and started doing my own programming with movies and documentaries.
Right there is about $200 a month that isn`t going into oversea corporates pockets.
Now that's smart. Smoking for 35 years was not. I am afraid the damage is already done.
I think this article is on to something. When most of the factories more offshore we should have less air pollution. Less people with jobs and less driving will cut emissions and traffic deaths further. Higher gas prices should cause even less driving. Cap and tax will force many to use less electricity that will help even more. A good idea would be to just retire early, live off gov't assistance, enjoy life, have less stress and enjoy the free healthcare....lol
Yes, one problem, sooner or sooner we will run out of everyone elses money, and that time is right in front of our faces, as it is in Europe now.
Next on the agenda is a revolution and subsequent violence when the have nots go after the haves, then filter in the violence right now hauling drugs and crime across the southern border.
Gee isn't this depression good?
A person affected by a recession will think twice about taking for granted you will be working for money without ever missing a paycheck. I don't believe people just don't lie around the house and have sex or make babies just because there is more time to. Quite a lot of people will have difficulties financially and argue. Some people will turn to stealing, thief or robbery. Recessions are no good. Technology should be able to take care of pollution and fast food is cheaper then going to the grocer. Recessions happen because of reckless idiots in our political system. The only good out of a recession is don't take anything for granted. This country needs leadership so bad it's killing us all ways of life.
ahhh what a nice spin zone you have created msnbc for your favorite administration. If Bush were Pres, would you be trying to create a positive spin about joblessness? I really wish we had openly partisan press in this country. It's ridiculous that certain news outlets pretend to be unbiased. Just come out and say "hey, we are in the tank for Democrats or Republicans" I would respect you more regardless of which party you supported. Stop the spin and deception!
If economic downturns are good for you, then what's next? I suppose cancer will be called a "wonder drug", right? Idiot!
CANCER gives you more free time and helps you lose weight so it must be A-OK !!!
Not funny! My sister died from cancer and it was a painful death. Please think of others before you comment. I-D-I-O-T
Why don't we stop playing games? The WORD to describe the economic crises is DEPRESSION! Every single aspect of this losing downsizing episode with the ups and the downs breaking bubbles and forcing jumpers to the bridges...is depressing to the body...and the bank account.
Crime is rampant in every single town, big or small...Orlando....Philadelphia...Phoenix...pick a town. Grandpa got a gun and goes to the bank to hold it up. Mom's are killing their children. Husbands are killing their wives.
No one cares about anybody...or anything...the news is filled with nations all over the world experiencing human terror that surpasses moments in history.
What "RECESSION"? When, you go into see a Fortune 500 company and try to get an order out of the department in the back of the building and they tell you they have to ask for permission to spend $500 dollars...you had better realize that we are way beyond that "word"!
HEY MSNBC HOW ABOUT FIRING MIKE SCHNEIDER ??!! He thinks the GREAT RECESSION is good for your health so how about helping him out!! He may need the exercise and I'm sure he'd love more free time !!!!
This is one of the most ridiculous articles I've ever read. Jobless people have HIGHER stress than those that are working because they constantly worry over finding a job. They lose their health insurance and they can't go see a doctor when they should or afford their medication. They have to try to live off of unemployment (a ridiculously low amount!!). The healthiest food is the most expensive food. How are they going to buy good quality food if they're not even bringing in a living wage (unemployment)???? The cost of living, gas and food have gone up, but the wages have gone DOWN. Stress, stress, stress! The amount of stress many jobless people are dealing with is at an unhealthy level and it is constant.
Also, the jobless are dealing with depression and anxiety. Depression can take over your life. You don't want to go out and do anything because you have an overwhelming feeling of unhappiness. These people are barely getting by because they feel useless and unwanted. I used to despise working (I did always have a job though) until I had to look for a job and couldn't find one. This made getting a job a big prize. Luckily, I finally got one and won the prize. Wake up people....you don't know how horrible it is until you've actually been jobless in this economy. I'm going to guess that the author hasn't been laid off recently.
No. It's toxic to millions of people about 20% all over the country lost their job. Some are sick and moneyless. The biggest unemployment and foreclosed house was in Nevada. Some are living in the streets. One woman on the street was begging and the next week I see the same woman lifeless. This is not good for a lot of people. Both the government and private sector needs to develop a formula to improve the unemployment situation in Nevada and around the country as soon as possible. This may have something t do with national dept, forclosed house, business losses on all sector.
Only Obama recessions are good for health. Bush recessions like this one are bad. This has to be the dumbest articles I"ve ever read.
The Democrats and Obama are fools who are making matters as bad as possible. If things weren't bad enough in the gulf region because of the highly unusual oil spill, Obama by putting a moratorium on off shore drilling, it has resulted in thousands of lost jobs. It's absolutely asinine to stop drlling because on one rare spill. Everything Obama does is wrong.
What a stupid article ... honestly..... Hey MSNBC, how's your ratings....??? Now we know why....
I've been unemployed for awhile now and my stress level is low. I don't have to worry about the job related stress and unpleasant attitudes in the workplace. I exercise at a very inexpensive gym daily. I saved alot of my money when I was working. I know that I will get another job but the rejections that I have experienced in my job search have been very beneficial for my physical health and mental well-being. I honestly wish that I didn't have to work but I do because I will need money.
The thing is majority of Americans wanted to work and 80% of employers are not hiring yet at all times or jobs are scarce in Nevada and most places around America because they don't have projects, clients business, or they are bankrupt and have lost their profits because of recession. Most people don't have jobs for almost 2 years. The government and private sector needs to sit down together to formulate a solution to this crises.
On the otherhand that is a dumbest questions I have ever read. A 5 year old kid would say I might die because my daddy have no work, no work no food on the table....
What a bunch of garbage and simply more Liberal spin trying to cover for the administration screw-up’s.
Jobs are down to nothing, stock market just Friday hit new lows, debt being increased by 1 TRILLION for less health care coverage, and they want us to believe this state sponsored propaganda?
If this stimulus failure is so good, maybe they should interview the millions of Americans with families who lost their homes, and living on the streets, or shelters, if they are cooking less?
Of course they are, THEY/WE HAVE NO FOOD! Wake up America and take back our country in November!
This recession has been going on for 2.5 YEARS, and the jobs and government spending/debt numbers are going the wrong direction. What does the Obama/Liberal administration have to offer, Cap and Trade new taxes on energy usage, new tax/fees on less healthcare, new taxes on company’s trying to hire employees to the point they move overseas.
Please do your homework in November, THINK before you vote, we CAN take back our country.
