NYT: Obesity in pregnancy is rising, contributing to greater burdens for hospitals, record rates of Caesarean sections, more birth defects and deaths for mothers and babies.
Growing obesity raises risks of childbearing

This is a scary article. All the women in my family are petite, never had any problems having babies; for example, my cousin weighed 110 lbs the day she gave birth--she gained 20 lbs total. No C-sections ever in my family, and all our kids were healthy. I think womens' doctors must do more to insist on weight loss for women in their childbearing years, like they have been after women to stop smoking. There were some obese moms in my church, I remember when their kids were born and all the complications the moms had. Some of these moms have passed on from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems--they did NOT live to see their kids grow up. Very sad.
Obesity raises the risk of just about anything.
True story: My cousin (who is obese) hurt her knee. Due to her massive weight, it actually tore the artery running down her leg and they had no idea because she couldn't fit into an MRI machine. She ended up losing her leg and damn near her life.
So you see, just a simple walk down the sidewalk can be hazardous to someone's health if they become truly obese.
The government has a role in this obesity problem. Many Obese people are on some type of public assistance including food stamps there should be strick controls over what can be bought with these stamps. If we the tax payer are supplying you with food the least you can do is get up and go for a walk!! How about a weigh in inorder to pick up your stamps?
Think about this for a second Bigeye. Indulge me.
When someone is on public assistance they look for cheap stuff. The cheapest foods one can find are potatoes, rice, pasta, etc. Low nutritional content and high carbohydrates. Carbs turn to sugar, which helps create obesity. Cheap meats are fattier, too.
Your plan is admirable and out of frustration, which is certainly understandable . But it won't work, because you would be forcing someone to purchase the most expensive items when they have the least resources to do so.
It is unbelievable how a lot of those people waste their food stamps. They buy mostly ready made food, (and this is all bought from a large supermarket,) some of these people I have been aquainted with, and so have seen what they buy. and one of the reasons they buy ready made food is because their children wont eat anything else! I have seen them buy more junk food then regular food. You can keep your wait down even with high carb foods. Me and my children stayed fairly slim back in the eighties, I worked but also got some food stamps, I cooked a lot of spaghetti, homemade pizza, fried chicken, homemade bread, some homemade deserts and we still stayed slim. Want to know why, because I MADE my children eat less and exercise more!!! If I had any food st amps left over I would splurge mabe once a month and get my kids a soda! A lot of the parents give into their children nowdays, one of the problems is the parents allow their kids to be the parent, it's time to make a stand! And that's a big part of why the jails are so full is because parents do not want to take charge of their children, even if there is a Dad at home he is still a wimp! We dont need programs either, parents just need to start being parents!
This is the way food stamps should be run: there are special food stamp grocery stores located on a bus line, and in the zipcodes predominated by the folks who receive food stamps. These are the ONLY stores that accept food stamps -- they sell NO junk food or cheap, white flour and sugar laden carbs, but fruits, veggies, lean meat, brown rice, etc...
They are staffed by food stamp recipients who are deemed able to work off some of the benefit they are receiving in food. This allows them to get some valuable work experience and training (supervised by the grocery chain that has the contract for the food stamp grocery stores). win win for everyone. The backend of the food stamp stores has a daycare center (staffed by food stamp recipients and managed by daycare professionals - so those workers will have no cost child care provided while they work).
If taxpayers are providing the free food then we are entitled to say what that food stamp $$ can be spent on (and I think the program is rife with abuse by folks who could work, but won't as it's more profitable to keep having kids and getting welfare than to take a min. wage job.
Another problem is that just about everything ready made uses high fructose corn syrup(HFCS) in it. The body does not recognize HFCS as sugar and processes it differently in the liver, most of it becoming fat. So just cut out all the sodas, which I did awhile ago, and I no longer miss them. I lost the most weight drinking homemade green tea with stevia sweetner.
DOH!
Obese women (and their obese husbands) should be banned from having children. That they can't control their own impulses for weight control - what do you think is going to happen with their children? If that seems harsh - then charge them extra at the hospital by the pound.
That's because grossly obese people are not supposed to have children according to nature. No problem people, listen to nature and do what you're told. The rest of you die off. That's the way it's been for millions of years, millions, way before any democrat or republican was even thought of.
Unfortunately, due to all our religiously biased peoples who actively fight against nature and God, many obese people have gaggles of children who end up being completely screwed up because that was what God and nature were trying to fight against. Congratulations, you're fight against God and nature is ac tually accomplishgin something. Well, it's accomplishing a 100% completely welfare dependent state of bipedel hominds who can't even being to approximate human behavior. Well , that's ok you people certainly didn't have the wisdom of the cow that gave you milk, so God can't be blamed when you turn around and return the favor.
Bursting a bubble time and I can't wait!!! (hehehehehe) Guess what?? :) My kids are T H I N!!!!!!!!!! My husband is T H I N!!!!!! I have health problems, some that cause weight gain and some that are made worse by being overweight, but I'm working on ways to get around them and I already run up stairs (barely any cartilage left in my right knee), I lift over 100 lbs (pain stimulator in my spinal column to help with the pain of 6 separate surgeries on nerves in my elbows that had scar tissue build-up from a cogenital defect), I walk faster than all of the rest of my family and 90% of the people I work with. I struggle with fatigue from a difficult to regulate thyroid and accompanying metabolic whatever; but keep going anyway most days.
I had my son when I had lost about 50 lbs; but gained a lot (@60 lbs) due to pre-eclampsia at the end of the pregnancy. An internist told me that if I didn't lose 100 pounds about 3 weeks after my son's birth that I would be dead in 5 years. But not to bother because "obese people can never keep it off" so just plan my funeral. A year later I was the smallest size I've been in my life; a size 4. I worked very hard to get there; 1 400 calorie meal per day in the evening and 6 to 8 hours of strenuous exercise (Tai-bo, elliptical, and walking). Within 20 pounds of my goal weight of 115, I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. After her birth I have not had the willpower or strength (nerve problems had gotten worse after the exercise) to get my routine back that will make me lose the weight....It's extremely frustrating, and NOT a simple thing to overcome!!!!!
Since I have a defect that really should have prevented me from ever having kids, it is a bit of a miracle that I had two with no special intervention or treatment; but I decided that since the birth defect prevents a natural birth that I would not go through any more C-sections. I had two and that was hard enough on me.
Is that enough of a counter to your rant?? I hope so. Don't paint with such a broad brush; you risk getting burned by your lack of reality!!
Don't believe me? That's YOUR problem!!
There is no excuse for being overweight. It is not the fault of the government, fast food restaurants, or society. It is a personal choice to be out of shape or healthy. Cheap food is the best for you. It may be high in carbohydrates, but beans and brown rice are excellent foods. Some fresh fruit and vegetables are not that expensive if you don't overeat.
I'm tired of political correctness - fat people are fat. And they are fat because they eat more calories than they expend in activity.
I’m feeding my entire family of three for $85 this week (that’s 3 meals/day because I believe in brown-bagging it), and that’s including the fact that I bought locally raised grass-fed beef, organic quinoa and lots of produce. How do I do it? I don’t let factories do my cooking. It’s crazy that people blow so much money on fake food loaded with preservatives and salt when it’s so much less expensive and much healthier to cook from stretch.
And don’t whine about not having time to cook either. You can make a double quantity one night so that you have leftovers for the next day, you can do prep work the evening before, and you can make stuff on the weekend and freeze it yourself.
The poor can not afford the healthy food, especially not the organic stuff. My mom buys all organic but thats because my step dad is a trader for Morgan Stanely and we can pretty much afford anything, no problem.
So lack to resources to buy the good food, plus being raised to eat junk food them selves due to their parents economic conditon plus bad genetics and throw in some lazyness and boom you have fatzilla.
It's more a constant stuffing of the face by the idle folks with no work to bother them at it. The "organic" stuff just means that it is grown with real feces rather than chemicals found in that feces. It does contain more bacteria than chemically pure fertilizers, though, if you need some diseases to keep you company.
Has this been analyzed by race/ethnicity or is that verboten?
My personal observation is that Asians and Whites are less fat than Blacks and Hispanics. And it is not the governments fault nor do we need more expensive bureaucrats/povertians to address this issue.
I guess I could be wrong, but since we analyze all other things by race/ethnicity why not study this as well?
Stupid reporting. The chance of pregnancy is inversely proportional to the flab. Some of these tanks are so fat that no man is capable (or willing) to complete sex with the blimps, anyway. The fat is self correcting to any potential pregnancy. And those gross guys cannot get their equipment out past their flab to do anything.
too freaking funny!,but sooooo' true'
Mike & Jr.: I laughted with what you wrote because it brought to mind a story I'd long ago forgotten.
My Aunt worked for a Dr. for 31 yrs. & they were giving a woman (morbidly obese) a pelvic exam as she was P.G. They walked to the back of the exam room to get something & my Aunt asked the Dr., "How did she get P.G.?" And the Dr. shrugged his shoulders & said, "Her husband probably said: ' pee & I'll follow the stream.' "
That said, I had a lot of problems with my 1st. P.G., none of which could have been anticipated nor avoided. I was not obese & luckily not an older 1st. time mother ( primaparida ) as I had a c-sect. when they were REALLY needed. (Not just to keep Doctors from being sued if the P.G. didn't turn out perfectly, & even then, my son had bilateral clubfeet.)
I know, as a nurse, that the fatter one is, the harder it is to get P.G., so problems begin right at the start. And believe me, a vaginal birth is infinately more preferable than a c-sect. I used to wish I could have one & felt "cheated" for yrs. with both sons born that way. But at least i know there was NOTHING I was able to do about it. That's some comfort.
