The foreclosures, the financial meltdowns, the freaky environmental disasters - they've all become part of our daily grind. But for some, that's not just a metaphor. Grinding and clenching are on the rise, say dentists across the country.
Stress of daily grind takes toll on teeth

I've been grinding my teeth for 20 years....
close to 40 years here
ive been grinding since i was in college, love my nightguard, cant sleep without it.
I clench. Crowns, crowns and more crowns. I try to stop, but when I started reading this article, it made me aware I was clenching my teeth. Arg!
I've been grinding for 25 years now. Mouth guards don't really work as I found I get more cavities when using them (I brush and floss daily too). It's a trade off. It's a good thing that are starting to research on growing new teeth. They have been able to grow a human tooth in a mouse, so 20 more years and it might be a reality.
So...........slow news day eh?!!
Stress is so unhealthy, whether on your teeth or not. Staying organized really helps. Online schedulers, like meebee.com, can alleviate stress in meeting up with people. http://bit.ly/7yXxag
I'm a dental assistant for 35 years.I tell patients that wearing a night guard is like an insurance policy to help protect your teeth in the future. The night guard gives the lower teeth a smooth surface to glide along the upper teeth when sleeping. The appliance is made by taking impressions of the upper & lower teeth to match your occlusion(bite).Once you get used to wearing it you can't sleep without it.You will see the wear patterns on the NG that would be otherwise your lower teeth!Save a lot of $ instead of future crowns!
I am surprised the article didn't mention the benefits of regular exercise to control bruxism. Exercising makes a huge difference for me.
You can get an over the counter night guard for 20 bucks, and they work great. I can't imagine paying hundreds of dollars for one (except for helping your dentist make his boat payment, of course).
I ground and ground until I developed severe TMJ in one of my jaws. It's very painful and difficult to treat. I wish I had started wearing night guards earlier when I first started to grind.
sunbeam- I agree. I've had several over the counter nightguards and they work great for me. Also, my hygienist cleans my nightguard free everytime I visit her.
I have used a nightguard for the past 5 years, but always felt that it was only Reactive, rather than Preventative. Yes, it protects the teeth, but you're STILL clenching! Which means your jaw muscles are still flexing constantly, you release continuous serotonins while sleeping, which means you're not getting the best sleep you can. I just recently found the solution! An apparatus called an NTI. Still worn at night, but it PREVENTS you from clenching; protecting your teeth and your body/mind. I'm getting fitted later this week!! Cost will probably vary, but ask your Dentist about it! I actually switched dentists to get this technology. I hope it helps you too!!
I had no idea I was grinding my teeth until a new dentist (not the one I see currently, but same practice) mentioned it a couple of years ago. I was a bit skeptical, but took her word for it - I'm almost 60, and no other dentist had ever said anything like that before. I decided to get the over the counter night guard instead of the several hundred dollar one she was talking about. The dentist I've seen since then has never even brought the subject up, so I don't know if that means that the night guard is working or maybe I never really had a problem to begin with. Either way, it's perfectly comfortable to wear, so probably better safe than sorry.
These days I have to worry about grinding my teeth by day! I've already chipped a lower front tooth, and I fear I am developing a crack in an upper front tooth. Anyone know how to stop lip biting?
I was grinding during all my sports performances. That's way I was attracted by drBrux logo. I discovered that a lot of sportsmen are grinding their teeth just during sports sessions.
The bite is a solution, I think much more easy than the Hypnosis or other sofisticated methodology. Anyway the bite is cheap. I tryed and I was satisfied, but really my life and my sport performance thanks for this.
As I told You there are a lot of solution. The one with i reach a good feeling was http://www.drbrux.com/default.aspx?IdLingua=2
$500 to $3000 for one crown? Are you kidding. Look Doc, I don't mind helping you pay the rent. I just don't want to PAY THE WHOLE thing in one visit. Most dental insurance is "capped" at $1500 a year. Things like caps and crowns are only covered at 50-80 percent, depending on your plan. It doesn't leave much to have done each year, especially as you age. Proper chewing is really important for overall health. If you can't chew, as an example, you can end up with digestive issues, that of course, leads to yet another kind of Doctor visits. People's teeth are the least thing they generally worry about when things in their life go south. It's also very expensive for what you get, or don't get for that matter.
I've beed grinding in the past. Now I solve the problem with a bite discovered during a sport race.
The name of the product is DrBrux and it is made in Italy by a group of dentists.
You can find more info there http://www.drbrux.com/home.asp?IdLingua=2 , this page is in English language. I discover it because it was the sponsor of a couple of my competitors in mountanbike championship.
Not only the stress from the economy, and the jobs crisis you have to look at people who is taking medication, that is causing a lot of side effects..in saying that people who is taking "dilantin" for instance have a lot of swelling of the gums, and when you get up in age this can be a lot of pain for them, and when they don't have the proper insurance to take care of this, then you can hang it up. Even if they are on a fix income. Toxicity from any of drugs, will kill you, in the end no matter what doctors prescribes to you and if you are not alert what you taking you will die..Now if you have the right insurance, you will be well takin care of, this I believe, So, don't be fool public no one is immune to this, because nothing is free, I don't care how they try to sugar coat it. This is the way life is now a day..
