The plastic chemical BPA, or bisphenol A, caused an uproar when health concerns were raised about its use in baby bottles. But what many don't know is that it's used routinely in nearly everything you eat that comes out of a can.
Most cans of food contain controversial BPA

Ever think of using glass instead of poison? Used to be a lot of glass factories around or is because China and Mexico don't know how to make glass?
We have been using this stuff for over 50 years now, (among other products) , how many new deseases etc. (or old ones increasing many fold) in that time frame? Could this stuff be behind it? If not, then there is probably nothing wrong with it.
With all the new technology introduced this last century, and not tested (how would we in so little time) , we either will all live long lives or we will all drop dead if we keep reading all of these "reports" and have no supporting data to back them up.(except for the things that do have data) and that must be acted on properly.
I know that have been reports posted warning about one thing or another and a few years later , the warning was wrong, or told something was safe and later told it was deadly. I don't know half of the time what is fact and what is fiction and neither do they.
I am far more worried about the GMO food(European research slams it very hard), the pesticides, hormones, steroids, fluorides, sugar substitutes, and other toxins/poisons added quite deliberately. F them all. I eat organic!
Every consumer product is dangerous. Obama should ban them all. Ban the organics too. Grow your own or starve. Ya, that's the ticket.
has anybody else seen the film "Strange Culture" by Lynn Hershman Leeman? It deals with GMO's, modified food product, bio engineering and terrorism.
An independent arts film starring Tilda Swinton.
(2007)
I can't help but wonder how much BPA comes from BP!
This is the price we pay for progress? The myth of progress.
I agree. We need to use more glass. And to make more glass, we need more sand. Uh oh! I see more troops going to Iraq now.
This is a fine example of your tax dollars working hand-in-hand with big business to ensure continued high profit levels in spite of minor complications such as cancer. If the corporations tell the bureaucrats to rubber stamp it, that's exactly what will happen.
And BTW, BP met all federal regs when drilling the well in the gulf - doesn't that tell you anything?
You are paying for an illusion: the illusion of democracy; the illusion of a free market; the illusion of safety or security. And you'll swallow anything, pay any price, and/or fight to the death rather than wake up from your pleasant dream.
Sheep.
I was thinking glass, too. I was also thinking that maybe it's time we start testing these chemicals BEFORE we put them in our foods. It also occurs to me that smoking isn't the worst thing in the world - at least we know that enemy.
Gotta wonder if the BPA might be an underlying cause for the increases of ADHD and autism-related conditions. Isn't autism now found in 1 out of 150? Some article stated both are found close together on one chromosome - chromosome 16, I think it was.
Does anyone else rinse the vegetables they get out of cans thoroughly? I do. Helps cut the salt and the canned taste. Maybe it's cutting some of the BPA, too. One can only hope.
The sky is falling, the sky is falling. It's the end of the world as we know it. 2012, 2012! The extinction of mankind. Big business caused all our ills. Nothing is safe now days. Oh, the good 'ol days.
Words of wisdom or naive indifference.
Frankly, breathing the air, drinking water from any source and eating any contained, preserved or processed food is not good for you, but won't kill instantly. It's probably a slow death or sickness over many, many years. So, we all die eventually, yes even healthy food and drink consumers.
Hmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!!
Like most subjects that are Hyped nowadays, it's alot to do about nothing. I won't argue with the notion that pregnant women need to be more careful about what they eat and drink. But for the rest of us, it is all about concentration in our food containers or food. When they test on animals and give them hundreds or thousands of times more concentrated amounts, then the results are basically BOGUS data.
Your body is designed to reject compounds that you inhale or eat up to a certain level, and keep on going like nothing happened. As far as going back to glass containers, then we need to ensure that it is not glass made with leachable lead in it. To me that is a much greater hazard.
Remember the Third Great Lie ! "Hi, I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."
do we now finally understand the feminization of an entire population?
The prominent industrialists, pharma and media knew this all along; hence creating social consent by portraying an alarming increase in genetically mutated feminine males as just a work of G_d and focusing instead on equal rights for them etc etc.
[[When they test on animals and give them hundreds or thousands of times more concentrated amounts, then the results are basically BOGUS data.]]
Actually, they do this in order to account for the fact that we humans live much longer than, say, mice, and that most toxins are likely have a cumulative effect over a human lifetime.
Why in the hell does the FDA allow the damn stuff to be used. Presumed to be safe?? How many times in my 69 years have I heard that!
Maybe it's time we went back to the basics of... Glass?
I guess the MMS isn't the only Federal bureau that's been bought off by corporate interests.
Good G....what is ultimately more important - money or your health? this chemical should be banned from everything!
The question is are we going to be healthier without this? I bet not, we didnt' have this drug 200 years ago and people didn't live nearly as long as they do now.
I will tell you this, if it is paying a huge price for Vegs in the winter in MN or taking my chances with cheap canned food. I will take my chances with cheap canned food. I will say this - too much of ANYTHING IS A BAD THING!
I live thru winters in Buffalo, NY & I'd rather (and do) buy those "expensive" or "huge price" FRESH vegetables vs canned disgusting ones!!! Try shopping your local farmer's marker in spring/summer/fall & can things yourself to guarantee that the "canned" veggies you eat in the winter are healthy. Get off your lazy ass & can it yourself -- NO excuses here! Yes - OMG my family and I eat fresh whenever possible just to be healthy & our blood tests show everything normal, including vitamin D, B12, and folic acid. NO excuses for laziness shall now or ever be acceptable. Of course though, those preservative will do just that, preserve you for an unhealthy elderly status.
realitybites-1317725 - Well maybe you could share your greedy wealth with the rest of us that can't afford to buy "expensive" or "huge price" vegetables. You must do something soul-less for a living.
Kind Regards
yeah realitybites is a jackass
Tom, the actual lifespan hasn't increased. Life expectancy is based on AVERAGES. A longer life expectancy is primarily based on the fact that babies and young children aren't dying as often because of better sanitation, overall nutrition, and being able to prevent or cure the infections that used to kill huge numbers of people. And of course some disease, the ones more prevalent in old age, are automatically going to be more prevalent when more people do achieve old age in the first place because they didn't die of influenza first. But it does NOT follow that everything we do today is therefore healthier than everything that was done in the past.
Also, frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh if not more so since they are flash frozen soon after picking rather than shipped in from South America. I agree with canning things yourself if you are able to do so, though.
This is scary. We at a lot of canned good stuff, and like most people have for years. Ad this to the hormones and antiobiotics in eggs, meat and dairy, pesticides in fruit and vegetables, it's a wonder any of us are still alive. I was in the Dollar store last week and a father had his two little boys with him. Their cart was loaded up with canned goods, corn, green beans, peas. They sell name brand 2/1.00. He probably thought he was being frugal and eating healthy but it seems nothing in our food supply chain is safe.
You know what is scary is that the FDA is a political/government organization that really doesn't care about anything other perpetuating its own existence. It doesn't inspect what needs inspection and over inspects trivialities.
Oh Bob, you got that right!! Everything starts with an Agenda. And in this case it to take down our large corporate food producers and tax them even more. We all couldn't live long enough to develope cancer at the level that this article is trying to scare us to think is possible. We now have free cradle to grave health care, so why should we care?
We do??? Since when? Or are you Canadian?
This is why we have such high rates of cancer in the US. What about the government? Simple: The FDA has been been infiltrated by the private sector (as have the other agencies like the FAA, FTC, SEC, EPA, etc.) and now do their bidding instead of watching our backs...
I think it's insane that we permit the private sector to dump whatever chemicals into our food supply that suits them - especially those which make them more money. Look at the oil spill - same thing - screw the health status of your citizens, or the state of your environment - if it makes money - do it.
It's time this country take a long, hard look at the relationship we have with the private sector. I think we should re-evaluate the status of privately held corporations, and begin re-formation requirements within set periods of time (so they just cannot go on indefinitely). We also need to decide which sectors of the economy are critically important (such as power generation, communications, transportation, financial and banking) and ensure there is more oversight and regulation. It's amazing to me that this country permits EVERYTHING (children, health, education, heavy industry, etc) to be sold off - all in the name of short term profit for a handful of families.
And...
Most people don't even realize that the entire system the US society is based on depends on cheap oil. Once it goes about $100 a barrel again, you'll start seeing new cracks - at $200 it start to become unworkable (for the middle class) and then above that, a full failure of everything from our living situation, to the food supply to telecommunications and education...
We need to begin to reassess how we do things in the US...NOW.
Ug! Petrochemicals, plastic containers, food sprayed with fossil fuel based fertilizers and pesticides...we are eating the stuff that's spewing out of the Gulf. No wonder we have such high rates of disease like cancer. Its like a pandora's box that we'll never get closed again. Seattle Architect- you are so right. Hope you are involved in your local Transition movement, there is one in North Seattle I believe, and one in Everett- they are very much involved in engaging the community there in working on that very problem!
I'm positive the ever popular bottles of water have BPA in it too.
Actually, they don't. Check with the bottling company, but the ones I use, do not have BPA in the bottles...and in fact are recycled (Absopure).
BPA is not only bad for humans, but it is also present in our lakes/rivers, etc., and is not good for other life forms, as well as in combination with other toxic chemical contaminants in our waters. I do not know why we cannot just go back to glass food and beverage containers, which are safe, are safely heated up...and can be recycled. Maybe this would help reduce our dependence on oil, as well...maybe the oil industry has an interest and some infulence in our continuing to make EVERYTHING out of plastic these days.
Everyone, but ESPECIALLY Pregnant women and those caring for young children should avoid all known sources of BPA, as they will still consume some unavoidably. Breast feed, if possible, and use glass baby bottles (and powdered formula...not liquid that is in BPA lined containers), fresh and frozen vegetables and fruits, and avoid canned foods... especially acidic foods in cans, such as tomatoe sauces.
BPA leaches out of plastic linings and bottles at a much greater amount when heated up, thus plastic baby bottles/baby food jars that will be warmed up are particularly something to avoid. Actually, there are other chemicals that can leach from plastics as well...especially when heated, so avoid heating food or liquid in ANY plastic containers or plastic lined cans/containers.
Isn't it great to know we are being poisoned by nearly everything we eat or drink? Thanks corporate america. Nothing like putting profits over human life. It makes you realize that corporate officers care nothing for people as long as they find new ways to improve their profits. These people along with our politicians are souless
So anybody trying to provide a product at a reasonable price and wanting to make something off it is sou-less?
You post is poisoning my mind with utopian crap, does that make you sou-less?
so you feel it's ok to sell your soul for the price of greed - the more the better?? oh, that's right - you're the soul-less brainless idiot on the street corner selling yourself for whatever little price you can get so that you can bow & scrape to get closer to the God you call money......so it's ok to f**k over your child either mentally, physically or even both to get more of that "all mighty dollar" by selling them to the cheapest "most reasonable"(what a joke) price? that's just pathetic - hopefully you are sterile & not in a position to harm anyone else with your little poisoned mind's thoughts of it being ok to harm others to get more money....
sheep....... :::rolls eyes & sighs:::
realitybites-1317725 - Were is the tolerance the left loves to brag about?
check the bottom of any canned product if not made usa or canada its good if it say china probaly bad look what they do to childrens toys poison .... i wont by anything unless its made in usa or canada or i make it fron local products home made is better you know whats in it read the labels and bottom of cans ..
Obviously, you are incorrect. This article is about canned foods that are canned here.
Sorry, I misread your comment.
yeah it's ok to get things made here in the good old u.s.a. --- just like the latest mcdonalds recall of their shrek glasses as they contain cadmium. you know, the toxic stuff they make BATTERIES out of..........these glasses were made in NEW JERSY -- now what??.......have you been licking the sides/drinking out of these glasses or what...
Not long ago the FDA had the guts to admit there may be a correlation between BPA in the nalgene-type bottles and breast cancer. They also said they were going to phase out BPA in baby bottles. If they're too spineless to ban it altogether, they should at least require that cans lined with BPA have that stated on the label, next to the ingredients. If it's made public on labels, maybe safer alternatives would be introduced just through competition and an informed public.
Good suggestion
They have poisoned absolutely everything that they sell to us. This is why the cases of obesity, diabetes, and cancer have skyrocketed. Those are probably the top three diseases that kill us. They do not care about our health. They obviously want us all very unhealthy and dead. I can guarantee that the CEO's of those companies do not eat it. We all need to start growing our own food.
BPA may also play a part in the earlier puberty statistics in our children, that we have been seeing for some years...and maybe ADHD, autism, etc. I believe it does definately contribute to premature puberty, as well as the skyrocketing childhood obesity rates.
If you think this story is scary, check out King Corn or Food, Inc.
The FDA has sold out like all other watch dogs. Must be watching porn with the other regulators. Grow your own and eat fresh. As long as you raise it. What a great country if they don't tax you to death. they will get you with what you eat.
Again, profits over people. All decisions have been based on profits and profit margins! Dying and suffering don't matter. Just don't let the facts out on the poisons that are consumed or we are exposed to everyday. Can't hurt the profits. I believe we are now living in Hell on Earth because of man's greed.
How about a shorter shelf life for canned goods? Some stuff is dated three and four years. I won't keep cans more than three months at the most.
Darn, I was of the understanding, the dates on the cans were to get you to toss them, so you would buy new. Be safe grow your own and eat fresh. Cut out the middle man. Then China will have to find something else to do.
You can also can your own home grown food safely, but not everyone has the land or the time. How do you grow everything if you live in an apartment?
To answer you question be creative. My remarks above were partly tongue in cheek. With that said, one might get together with others and grow food elsewhere. Or buy from local farms or farmers markets. The other solution is to your government to their job and make sure what you buy is safe. After all they are being paid for it. The FDA is suppose to be looking out for your interest not theirs. I buy nothing in cans. My choice. The reason I started reading the labels. And it was sobering. I also have a friend who has a ranch. A small one, I bought 30 chickens and we are building a coop so they don't get eaten by other other critters. during the day the roam his land Free range and organic, they eat bugs. We will supply his family, my family our friends and our friends. We also grow some vegetables. But we do it in containers. What we have left over we freeze. dry or can our selves. Fifty years ago that's how folks survived. I can remember when there were Ice Boxes. If you did not have one you bought fresh. And that was done in all the major cities. We as a nation turned every thing over to someone else. Folks need to become self reliant. My travel time is about an hour each way. Technology is great but we have become depend on it. One good bunch of solar flairs from the sun and technology is out. No television, no cell phones, no computers. and no cars? Then what. The average person can not go with out water for more than three days and food for seven days.
That's it in a nutshell. I work for a medical company, and you would not believe the "safeguards" customers request in software to ensure that the staff "doesn't make mistakes." We get more requests for features like that all the time. Sounds great, right? What ends up happening is that the staff get more and more complacent and and more easily distracted. After all, the computer is watching, right? I have seen people actively surfing the internet on their computers during a major medical procedure when they were supposed to be monitoring a patient, because technology allows them to do it. And when something goes wrong, it's the computer's fault because it didn't warn them that they needed to stop watching Youtube videos and do the job they're paid for. But I guess if it's good enough for our Federal agencies, it's good enough for the rest of us.
[[Folks need to become self reliant. My travel time is about an hour each way]]
In which case you are doing WAY more to pollute the planet than the good folks who live in the middle of big cities like me. I have generally been able to walk, bike, or take public transportation to work, I also shop on foot at the farmers market and little ethnic marts, and as I have a rowhouse I do grow a few things. Several big cities even allow people to own chickens and other small livestock under certain conditions (generally involving permission of all neighbors). I admit I don't do this, but I do keep giant rabbits who mow and fertilize my tiny lawn in the most planet-friendly manner possible! The suburban or exurban, long-commute lifestyle is NOT sustainable.
So we have not escape, ha ! The cancerigens is everywere, in the drink, food, house, air, etc. the killer #1 to humanity for many years in the wordl history but our government have a concer and campaigns for the HIV, a selective killer for some minority people, I lost already three relatives for cancer, I can be the next...
It was so ez to blame second hand smoke for everything. Now that most have stoped smokeing they got to have something else to blame it on.
*sigh* Produce can be unsafe because of pesticides. The majority of foods are loaded with high fructose corn syrup as a filler and sweetener, including bread. Artificial sweeteners can cause cancer. Frozen meals are packed full of preservatives and salt. Now, canned goods are full of BPA.
Is there ANYTHING that's safe to eat anymore?
No, there is nothing safe to eat. You must stop eating immediately, it will be healthier for you. When you shrivel up and die, the world will be a healthier place for the rest to live.
Patriot - Did you read the article at all? BPA is being used in most canned foods, which makes up a large percentage of the food of many families. It's just one more (huge) group of foods that's no longer safe.
On a mass market basis no to answer your question. Why would be a better question, maybe. The why is those in power in our Government no longer serve the people. They have been bought and paid for by the mass market. So to speak. There are very few regulations that work or are even in place. The regulators are drawing big paycheck, have good pensions and medical and dental all supplied my you the tax payer. While the watch porn and work at second jobs while on the clock. And the voter is to blame, yes the voter. We no longer demand from our governmet. This is not only an issue at the Federal level this goes all the way down to you local level.
It's amazing how many idiots are out there, including the author of this story. If they had done their research, they would have learned that all the BPA used in making epoxy resin is tied up in the reaction to produce the resin. The concern over BPA is "free BPA", or excess that is left over after the production of polycarbonate, an entirely different material. The epoxy is further reacted during the coil coating process (the can steel is roll coated before the cans are formed), so the chance of ANY residual BPA is exceptionally low, and one would literally have to eat the cans to even get to the epoxy itself (epoxy is super strong glue and used in corrosion resistant paints because it sticks like nothing else to metal).
We live in a world where "hype" is more saleable than science. So let's eliminate can coatings and go back to dying from food poisining...
vinchien if I did not know better i would say you might be a lobbyist or someone who might be impacted by change. Science is not perfect. When i was growing up folks said DDT was not harmful and our government said agent orange is not harm full to our service men and woman. And asbestos would not harm you. Most science is base upon math. At some point math falls apart. So why not your science. There is always to sides of the story But where is the truth. Over the years, he who has the most money wins. And be darn with the truth. There are other alternatives to the issues.
vinchien -- One of the warnings that came out in the last couple years about BPA is to not drink water out of the nalgene-type bottles that have been left out in the sun or in a hot car. The heat will cause BPA to leach from the bottles into whatever liquid is in them. The same would apply to containers used in a microwave, etc. I agree with Walt, it sounds like you have an interest in keeping BPA on the market.
thanks Anne I was waiting for someone to touch on this subject...how many ppl don't know this ..also if you look on the bottom of the plastic bottles or plastic containers it tells you a number in the center of a triangle what grade it is and I believe the higher the number the worse it contains the bad chemical...
Or find a safer chemical to use in can linings. Why is it that you think BPA is the be-all and end-all, and that nothing can be found to replace it that's safer and just as cheap, if not cheaper? This is the same mentality as the BP supporters whose attitude is that oil is and always will be the ONLY viable fuel source we'll ever have. This stuff (and oil) has only been in use for a relatively short period of time. There's no reason that we cannot develop better alternatives with research and development. There's no good reason that we haven't already, except that certain industries have a vested interest in NOT allowing that development to take place.
Here we go again. A bunch of enviro-fanatics have drawn disastrous conclusions without any science to back them up about a product that they do not understand.
When are going to learn that these people are as misguided as a teenage driver behind the wheel?
"Without any science"? Again, I need to ask if you read the article at all:
Or how about:
Is that 'scientific' enough for you?
Plastic comes from petroleum (oil for the under-read). Crude. Very crude.
Okay, so we all go back to the glass we never should abandoned. But what about the billions of pounds of trashy plastic goods you put in landfill. Where do you suppose their BPAs went/are going? Glass of water? Anyone?
Patriot 1, this is not a Gore tale. Good science got this chemical pulled from baby bottles.
Folks, bisphenol A is a SYNTHETIC ESTROGEN!!!! Look it up...it was later (many years after the initial discovery) polymerized and used as a plastic hardener. Now honestly, how can anyone say that this is not harmful? What the hell do you think happens to baby boys exposed to this stuff in utero? They show signs of feminization! And our girls are entering puberty younger and younger. It ain't rocket science, but the American public has never demanded that our government change the way things are done. Consequently, we continue to be guinea pigs in the largest uncontrolled experiment ever. Period. Hormone disruptor chemicals are harmful in microscopic amounts; that is what is so scary about this. And not only is it in our food, it's in newspaper ink, carbonless cash register receipts (in much larger amounts which rub off on our hands), toilet paper and wine! Why bother banning it in baby bottles?? They will be exposed in so many other ways. Even breastfeeding infants can't get away from it because mom has it in her blood and therefore in the breastmilk. Bottom line: it should NEVER have been allowed in our food to begin with.
People please wake up!Nearly everything you eat is either geneticallymodified,or smothered in chemicals. It's up to you to determine what to eat and drink.you can't entrust your health and well being to the FDA. We need to take responsibility for what we and our loved ones eat.In the end there is no one to blame but yourselves .Corporations like MONSANTO don't give a rats ass about your health! If you want to send a message to these chemical corporations just stop buying the crap they sell, and be aware of what you put into your mouths and your children's mouths.
Rich and tired, nicely said. i am old and tired. Bet most of these folks have never heard of Monsanto let alone the damage they did to peoples lives. I agree with you. But what the hey. Life lessons are never learned easy. What is only ten percent happens to us the other ninety we do our selves.
We can all complain here on Newsvine all we want. But if you want to do something about this, avoid as many canned items as possible, except Eden Foods and any other that advertises BPA free cans. You don't have to be perfect, just put most of your food money elsewhere. I really like canned tuna, but have cut down because of this. As far as I know they don't make it in a jar. The reason BPA is still used instead of more expensive substitutes is a small cost differential. Less sales of BPA coated cans will cost more than that to the producers, and they will change production to follow your dollar.
The sky is falling we are all gong to die. Get a grip people. What a bunch of BS. Just like getting your kids immunized gives them Autism. Crazy nuts out there.
bsimspon, SOMETHING is causing the rapid rise of autism, and don't tell me "better diagnosis". Full blown autism isn't something you can ignore.
Bsimspon: you remind me of a friend of mine, He smoked all the time, could not be without it. He told me he knew allot of folks that lived a very long time and they smoked and he would be fine. Well he came down with cancer of the lungs and emphysema. In eight months is weighed less than a hundred pounds, and suffocated to death in that eight months. He was hook up to breathing machines and stuck in bed. He said to me before he died, I wish I would never had smoked. It was to late then. But we all have to learn our own lessons and some times they are not easy. You have every right to your own opinion and I respect that but please don't assume you have the right to label me because of my opinions. Freedom of speechis a wonderful thing lets respect that please. I wish you no harm and a long life. I just wanted to throw out the analogy so we all could think about it. Nothing personal.
Glad you brought up autism. I just heard a theory from a scientist studying this which says a fungal toxin (not aflatoxin, but another one) from fungus which grows in Tylenol could cause autism at certain stages of child development. Tylenol makers just got busted for dirty manufacturing practices, which could promote the fungal growth. I'm sure when it was new and they tested it, the batch was cleaner than in mass production today. He describes a mechanism for this in the nervous system which I cannot go into here (I don't completely understand the details myself). What do they recommend you do when your kid gets a round of vaccinations and is grumpy/feverish? Give them Tylenol! Could explain the coincidence of the shots happening at the same time as the onset. Not every scientist who discussed this agrees with him, but it's worth thinking about.
How does this fit in here? A commentator further above mentioned that we come up with new substances so fast now, and ingest so many, that we can't possibly single out/know which ones are bad. I hope this guy can solve it, there will be a lot of big money betting against his theory, too.
Also, the rise in autism happened about the same time as the rise in Tylenol (acetaminofen) use, around 1980.
@walt....AMEN....very well spoken....we need more comments like yours....
