By the time women reach 44 years old, roughly 85 percent have given birth. Yet health insurance coverage and support services to keep mothers and babies healthy are often seriously deficient.
Moms to get more care under new health law

So do we just assume that women having babies have no family around to help them learn how to be a mother? We have to provide for home visits to teach women common sense with children. If a baby cries they are hungry, uncomfortable or in pain. Honest to God this is not rocket science.
What a pathetic culture we are raising when we promote what the Government provides over what should be passed down through family from mother to daughter. Mothers start raising your children and tell the Federal Government to mind their own business.
As for expressing milk in a bathroom...Is that really the worst thing in the world. Again, not rocket science. You don't sit at your desk or in a public place and share that business. You don't actually need a lounge to express milk. A place to sit the bag and 10 minutes is really all that is necessary.
As for insurance....If you are planning to get pregnant buy a health insurance policy. Eat well, don't drink, smoke or do drugs and for Gods sake stay away from men who have hit ya. Again, none of that is really difficult to figure out.
Oh yea....Mama's take care of your babies especially if they are having babies o
So, you're saying you would gladly eat food prepared or processed in a public bathroom?
You want to sit on a toilet in a bathroom to express the milk your child is going to ingest? How nice for you. That makes me want to puke. I'd much rather my lactating co-workers sit at their desks to do that if a toilet is their only other option.
It's not rocket science to expect that a woman needing to express milk deserves a nice place in which to do so. She's only feeding the continuation of the human species. Geez.
Mama_Yvonne... That milk is going from breast to pump and not being scrapped off the floor. Are you kidding me? The milk was produced in glands in the breast and the to a sterile bag. Now given the faith in mankind that our Federal Government is promoting maybe we should make sure that the breast pump cup is professionally sterilized so that we know the mother is not doing something unsafe for the child she has already left in some strangers care.
DragonsChest...Having a child is a personal choice. Not every aspect of having a child is comfortable nor convenient. When responsible for another human life the least of a woman's concern should be how comfortably is the available place to express milk.
ISn't this part of the feminist utopia desired by the early advocates? Supstitute government in the role of the husband? I think this is what was advocated decades ago.
Dog Blue....I would hope not. There is no substitute for a husband. But it does seem to continue to elevate women to a higher and higher special interest which is just a shame. When exceptions of a special class are made that denigrates all the members of that class not just the ones wishing to seek special treatment over the ability to adapt.
Home visits from nurses are fantastic, they can even help families save money by helping mothers stick with breastfeeding (some women have problems with BF and give up, meaning they spend money, or the gov't does, on formula). It isn't always easy having a new baby, sometimes families are not in the area, and women aren't born knowing the nuances of caring for a newborn.
Also, don't understand the fear of public breastfeeding, most women are very discreet, and it's not forever. People are way too uptight in most of the US.

Here's why the law was passed to ensure that women don't have to express milk in a bathroom
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1839
Note that the information has been available since 1975.
Yeah because bathrooms are such a nice sanitary place to pump milk to feed to a small baby who does not have a strong immune system! BAER!
Mom of Cutie Pie... Just so you know the best place to express milk is directly into the child. For those worried about the infants immune system they might worry a little bit more about the daycare environment that they subject that immune system to on a daily basis.
If you cannot afford to take care of them in the home then don't complain about the frailty of their little bodies.
So what do you express into some unclean vessel before placing that milk into a freezer bag?
"The dynamic around abortion was so controversial," says Guyer, "people working on the issue wanted to be sure that pregnancy and maternal support services were ensured."
This seems reasonable. No matter what side of the abortion debate you're on, I think most people agree that one way to prevent abortion is to make sure pregnant women have the support to carry their children to term, and to raise the children if they choose to keep them.
I'm not saying the new law is perfect, but I think addressing such a contentious issue with solutions that both sides can agree on is the most productive approach.
Man Barry/Obama is going all out with the PR to sell his socialized medicine program isn't he?
What other propaganda will be spun to get people to swallow communism?
SO, what, you're one of those "pro-lifers" who'll bang the drum about saving the unborn, but trying to teach and insure under and un-insured mothers and babies is where you draw the line? That's communism to you?
You sound to me like a hypocrite.
Okay but isn't this part of what child welfare services is surpposed to have been doing all along? And just what women/teengirls are they talking about, they don't say, I wonder why. This whole health bill is going to put us deeper in detb just wait and and see. As always just my opinion.
Meanwhile, the uninsured without children can continue to just rot away because they're of no worth to society.
Shocked, that is what I am, When will this stop. I am for support of a child that is born to a teenager but I am also for the system of adoption. It would be much better on the child if it had an option of having real parents. Maybe we could use the money delegated for the nurses and instead hire teachers for the children that are awaiting adoption. Use the money to care for the children and if the mother has the desire to get her children back, then let them work at the orphanage so they can see their child, and if serious, they will learn how to be a mother.
maybe we can stop providing such an out of control welfare system for teenages who become mothers and then maybe so many teens wouldnt choose parenthood, sorry but who can blame teens for getting pregnant when it means a monthly check, house, bills paid etc and never having to work??
I am amazed that 40% of pregnant women are covered by Medicade. And now our government wants to increase that. Why do low income people who can not afford to have children get pregnant? Don't they know that it is very expensive being pregnant, delivering a baby and then bringing up a child. And surely teenagers who get pregnant have parents. It should be their responsibility to take care of, not the government, which of course means the taxpayer. Helping out people when they are down and out used to be a worthy thing, until the leeches got involved and suck every dollar they can out of working Americans.
This is the group that is subsidized by the government, intentionally or not, that has been the status quo since the 60's.
this needs to end, i am all for insurance companies offering coverage for pregnant women - a coverage you pay for if you want to breed, but having to cover folic acid?? you want to have a baby you pay for it, having to pay for smoking cesstation classes? you want a baby you stop smoking, if you cant afford housing, food and diapers then you have no business having a child.
I don't understand why at risk groups have been singled out to get help during pregnancy and after childbirth. Even mothers with adequate resources need support with the basics such as breast feeding, etc.
This is another case where the government provides resources for some, but intentionally leaves out everyone else because they seem to be getting along okay.
I agree, all women should have this service if wanted. It's can be scary having a baby with no mother to help you, even at my age! (37) The home nurse came by around 5 times the first 2 mos of my son's life, really helped my husband and I. And they check the health of the baby
Sorry, the women will never get an appointment. With Obamacare, visits will be rationed, due to overcoverage and under staffing and not enough doctors. Better to have an appointment under the old system, than to suffer further damage without an appointment!
That is not true, where do you get your facts? I have lived in Canada the past 8 years, had my 3rd child here, my baby saw the doctor on a regular basis, no waiting. I don't believe the US should have socialized medicine, but a gov't option (which will give the insurance companies competition) is a great idea. It is needed, and will be cheaper in the long run...no running to the emergency room for a non-emergency, etc.
Europe has a debt problem due to bloated government and too many entitlement programs costing too much money.
The US has a debt problem due to a huge defense budget, bloated government, and entitlement programs.
Eventually interest payments on all this debt will become too onerous to pay and governments will either default or print enough money to pay off that debt. Either way, hard times are ahead unless we make hard decisions sooner rather than later. Entitlements (such as bare bones healthcare) that are worth keeping need to be funded and cuts made to other programs to balance the budget.
We are funding our current lifestyle on the backs of future generations!
