Interesting. This applies to other areas. So by learning not to show emotions, because of the demands of various social and environmental reasons, this leads to less ability to experience the emotions because the facial feedback is missing. Just a theory.
Garrick, I think that IS very interesting- too bad Snuffy felt the need to reply to your post with an unrelated comment in order to have "top of page" status.
This has everything to do with the story at hand, just have someone read you the title on the top of the page and you may understand....But probably not!!!!!
I was just saying that, this explains your girl Nancy Peloser lack of emotion!!!! Get a grip!!!!!
Interesting. Follow these people for some period of time and see what happens. If the feedback loop is broken, then the effect should get more pronounced the longer the participants are under the influence of botox.
Is this also true for people with Bell's palsy or strokes that have more effect on facial expression?
Whatever happened to "growing old gracefully?" My generation (the one that said it'll never grow old) is going to it's inevitable grave, kicking and clawing. Botox, tummy tucks, wrinkle cremes, hair color, Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, ...
I have no problem with a little "tune-up", but some of these people are walking plastic dolls. When it becomes painfully obvious to everyone but yourself (Pelosi, Burt Reynolds, Joan Rivers, etc) it's time to give it up!
I watched a fairly new TV show a few days ago, and the female star of the show (a fiftyish gal) had been botoxed so dramatically, I felt the need to change channels (just made me sick inside to see what this had done to her).
Our culture values only youth and beauty. Hey, I didn't make the rules or the norms. And so as long as it does, botox will continue to be a necessity and health care staple.
Looks matter. In finding a mate, in finding a job, and even in sports. Deal with it.
Well then count me out. I am perfectly happy with the way I am and I do believe if more people thought that way, then "society" would have less influence.
I agree. I'm not saying it's right but it's what nature intended in the human and animal kingdom, I suppose. Creatures seek out attractive ones and strive to look attractive to potential mates. I think it's weird and ironic that we're going up against the will of nature. What I mean by that is, medical advances now make all of us of feel we have a RIGHT to get old, when in fact NO ONE wants to LOOK old. And no one likes old people. And I've always felt growing old is NEVER a guarantee. Maybe we've pushed the limits on how old a human can live anyhow. Sadly ironic, if you asked me.
This is so stupid. I've earned every wrinkle and gray hair and wear them proudly. I don't give a damn if someone thinks I'm old. By their standards, I probably am. By my late " great " great-grandmother's standards I'm sure I would be very young. Suck it up. Live is a journey with a whole lot of wrinkle and gray hair creating moments. If you don't have those moments, you really haven't lived.
That explains 40% of Nancy Pelosi's problems. The other 60% is due to her continuing mental situation. I think she will be institutionalized when she is thrown out of office.
I wouldn't worry too much about the Botox-emotions connectin.
First of all, if Botox is done correctly, it does not "freeze" your face. There will still be muscle movement, but not to the point that wrinkles (caused from frowning, for instance) will continue to deepen deepen due to the frowning.
Second, if one actually does experience less negative emotions like the kind that precipate frowning, so what? Wouldn't that mean a person is actually happier? Is that a bad thing?
Of course, like everything else in life, an excess of it isn't good.
I totally agree that Botox would have a good effect if done correctly. Since we don't smile with our foreheads - forehead lines are called frown lines, it stands to reason that the effect of feeling less negative emotions would be greater.
Most people getting Botox are in some stage of menopause, so botox make the world a calmer place for everyone. I speak from experience, this could be a very good thing!
Not sure how much credence to give this study. ALthough I will say, I am sitting here at work bored out of my ever loving mind.. and I am fake smiling.. and I actually am starting to feel a little happier. Perhaps, as another poster suggested, the people that are vain enough to have toxins injected into their bodies , not truly knowing the long terms consequences, just aren't as emotional as the average Joe or Jane..
Botox is a poison just like every prescription drug is a poison. There can be unwanted side effects, just like with drugs. In the hands of a skilled doctor, it is not dangerous.
As for vanity, how different is using Botox from using makeup? After all, your skin is not much of a barrier. It's porous. The ingredients in your makeup go into your body. Is that dangerous? Maybe. Read the ingredient label to see what toxins and chemicals you are putting into your body every day with your makeup.
A handful of Botox treatments probably exposes your body to far less toxins than years of using makeup.
Perhaps the folks who choose Botox treatments are overall less emotional and more shallow to beginwith and would not have had a more emotional reaction anyway-
Generally the people who have these procedures done have money and we know money does not always bring happiness. They were unhappy in the first place. Now it's painted on their faces.
You don't have to "have money" to have Botox done. It costs maybe $200-$300.
People who don't "have money" have been known to spend a whole lot more than that to indulge their vanity and their egos. For women: weekly manicures/pedicures, year in and year out. For men: expensive, flashy new cars.
There's nothing wrong with any of those indulgences. To each his own.
I think this is the tip of the iceberg with Botox...I just read the potential side effects and warnings in the ad and I think long term use so close to the brain is going to cause major problems with the central nervous system. Guess we'll know in 30+ years!
I had botox in my forehead years ago and for me the positive was I couldn't scrunch up my forehead when stressed that was part of the reason I did it so I figured this out years ago the negative was if I wanted to scrunch and couldn't I would get painful spasms in my forehead. I thought about doing it again to stop my squinting so much but I am a bit afraid to and can't afford it anyway
I think that this is the tip of theiceberg with regard to Botox. I read the potential side effects and warnings in THEIR ad and it's really scary actually. I can't imagine that injecting a toxin so close to your brain would not result in a central nervous system injury, but I guess we won't know for 30+ years! Hang on people, lasers to erase wrinkles are right around the corner!
I am a psychiatrist and also administer Botox. The article published in Emotions is hilarious except that someone at msnbc took it seriously. It must have been a slow news day!
My neurologist is always trying to talk me into using Botox to help my migraines, but I've never felt comfortable with having a poison injected into my face. He assures me it's perfectly safe, then I come home and read about how they will have to issue a black box warning because of the people who have died from Botox injections. (Yes I know it was a different scenario.) Besides, it's quite expensive and not covered by my insurance. I am not completely ignorant of all this, as I have worked in healthcare for almost 25 years.
This is hilarious news about botox... Totally something some snob in california would do. I use this great skin serum on my skin to firm it right up. It's called Cellex-C and it works wonders. No dangerous botox. http://www.frizzy2silky.com/shop/cellexc-advancedc-serum--p-5939.html
Skin firmness and wrinkles are two different things. No skin serum will get rid of wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions such as frowning.
The only thing that will ease out expression wrinkles is to eliminate the facial expressions that cause them. Botox does that nicely. If injected properly, it does not freeze your face. It merely lessens the muscle movement that is creating the wrinkle.
To : it's all your fault: I betcha you are an overweight woman who is miserable in her own skin- or perhaps you are an uneducated, morbidly obese, woman whose husband runs around on your because you are disgusting and FAT, not to mention extrememly closed minded.
I have been getting botox since I was 22 years old (now 30), I use a lot of expression, so my lines were getting extremely deep. Botox, also helps with depression, my 87 year old grandmother had it injected after she lost (death) her husband, daughter, sister and brother all within 8 months, and it helped greatly. Injectables, while may have some side effects, it will NEVER stop me from attempting to find the fountain of youth -within reason!!!! I've even heard from my clients (I'm a mental health therapist) it helped with depression. Perhaps because they like seeing a younger fresher face in the mirror, but I think we all feel great when we look and feel our best. Hints as to why I work out daily, no one is miserable being fat, or looking dumpy or old...
Sherri- Bravo to you!!!!
As far as politics are concerned, people grow up, find something else to discuss, just because you are a democrat, republican or independent, put politics where the belong, in politics not in the midst of a BOTOX debate.....

Now this makes sense...That's why Nancy Pelosi is such a first class beach!!!!!!!!!!!
There we go again Snuffy - way to go to inject (ha!) politics into a subject that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
Get a grip man. You need help. All that hatred is killing you.
Garrick, I think that IS very interesting- too bad Snuffy felt the need to reply to your post with an unrelated comment in order to have "top of page" status.
Or maybe these people who "need" botox to look young - are shallow empty shells that lack emotional response in the first place.
BJ for short & she eat it (sheaster),

LOL Shorty - you're saying a whole lot more about yourself than you are about me. I couldn't care less what you think.
Ignore.
uv whatever - I cannot stand Sarah Palin, but no, I would not have agreed. You betcha!

This is not new... Leonard Nimoy figured this out during his years playing Mr. Spock on Star Trek.

What a load of crap! Why don't these "researchers" research something meaningful??
It is the complete opposite: Inability to reason leads you to use BOTOX, the most dangerous toxin known.
Generally the people who have these procedures done have money and we know money does not always bring happiness. They were unhappy in the first place. Now it's painted on their faces.
