The recent article about a "stem cell breakthrough" was using adult cells, not embryonic cells. AFAIK there have been no proven treatments using embryonic, and several tragic failures.
I am not completely sure of the limits of the stem cell cloning, butyou cannot clone an infinite number of cells from one "donor". Imagine that some major disease (like Parkinson's) could be treated with embryonic stem cells. How much fetal tissue would it take?
Underwhelmed-488063, what facts are those? Stem cells cannot be propagated infinitely, so for embryonic stem cells to be used to treat widespread disease embryos will be needed to harvested at some rate. What is that rate?
That's silly, God created us and our minds, scientists have discovered many things so have doctors. Humans evolve in every way medicine is one of them.
Alright then. Let's not mess with "God's" creations. Let's stop progress in medicine and medical technology. Hell, let's just go back to the Dark Ages.
For a person like myself who is waiting for a double lung transplant this article is great but why would you put an article like this on the internet if it is going to give us false hope. (going to be 20 to 25 years before it can be tested in human). It is hard enough waiting but please be more selective when you put an article on the internet.
Sorry you are waiting for a transplant - I hope a donor is available soon. BUT, it's vitally important that these articles be written. The stories inspire current and future scientists/researchers - and inform the public about all the wonderful innovations happening around the world.
There was an Oprah show that feature the experts from The Doctors that discussed this exact medical technology of draining existing organs until only the empty collagen tissue remained --- looked like a white pile of dry layers of plaque. They then started pumping blood through the tissue and the organs re-grew/regenerated to be fully-functional organs. They used heart tissue that even started to rhythmically contract & relax like it was actually pumping blood inside of a body. Wow!
If you people would like to be alarmed by something this technology isn't it. This technology will in the not so far future save many lives.
If you really want to be alarmed by something, be alarmed by all the genetic engineering that is occurring in the Virological and Bacteriological fields and THEN look into who exactly is funding the research! It appears that our military would like to have a designer plague and from what I have read, progress is being made.
I think a designer plague would be great if it didn't get out of hand. It would be great if they could isolate the gene that causes religious fanaticism and kill them off... Christians. Muslims, whoever had the fanatic gene. Goodbye Pat Robertson...lol
Wow, what is wrong with some of you?? I waited close to 4 years for my lung transplant - at the end I was so sick I could barely stand it anymore. You have no idea what it's like to struggle for every breath you take - I've lost so many lung transplant friends over the past 8 years that I can't even count them. Some were lost because no lungs were available and they died waiting, others died after transplant due to rejection issues or other problems. If you read this article in the London Telegraph, it states that only 10 - 20 percent of lung transplant patients survive after 10 years - most of the problems experienced are due to rejection and the side effects of the anti-rejection drugs. Think about it, what a wonderful thing it would be if transplant patients didn't have to worry about rejection, and didn't have to take the drugs that keep us from rejecting our organs (most of them have some pretty bad side effects, to include an increased susceptibility to cancer).
Lung disease is one of the biggest killers in the world - close to 12 million per year. Smoking isn't even the biggest cause - mostly it's genetic and environmental. Let's see, there are probably about 30 different lung diseases that cause lungs to fail and require lung transplantation. Some research now indicates that there might even be a genetic link for people who do smoke and have a degenerative lung condition.
Good news. All those people addicted to tobacco will be able to stop at the lung store and buy replacements.
Wouldn't you be panting all of the time if you had Labrador lungs?
Great news! Imma go buy me a pack a smokes. (drip drip drip goes the sarcasm)
You would think that Big Tobacco would be secretly funding this research. At least they would if they were smart.
Wow... yesterday an article about stem cells being used to cure blindness... and now this... pretty amazing stuff...
and to think there are people who are against stem cell research...
nutcases.
There is against, and there is against...

Ben, your facts here are so confused there is no intelligent way to approach a rebuttal. So I shall instead patiently shake my head and sigh.
They are not against all stem cell research, they are against embryonic stem cell research but they are for adult stem cell research.

I'm not sure but I don't think we should be messing with Gods creation.
That's silly, God created us and our minds, scientists have discovered many things so have doctors. Humans evolve in every way medicine is one of them.
Fine! Then feel free to refuse asprin, anesthesia, immunizations, dentistry, and any other medical treatment.
*rolls eyes*
Aren't the researchers also "God's" creations? Gifted with the intelligence, desire and duty to pursue this research for the sanctity of life?
Think through your arguments before making them.
Alright then. Let's not mess with "God's" creations. Let's stop progress in medicine and medical technology. Hell, let's just go back to the Dark Ages.
Some people are just silly.

Demonstrable progress also keeps the ever so important funding flowing!
Thank God for these people! With this research we will be able to save the lives of many, many rats!
This tech is crazy.
