If it wasn't such a problem they wouldn't be studing this. High blood pressure not only kills, it jacks up all of our health insurance rates to treat those that eat too much salt (most of us) and get high blood pressure, fall into a coma or have a heart attack. Open heart surgery, stints, etc ain't cheap.
Out of 10 siblings in our family, I am the only one to quit using salt (added salt) 35 yrs ago. Everyone one of my siblings started taking high blood pressure pills in early 50's. I (knock on wood) am the only one not taking the pills. High blood ran on both sides of our family. I think the no salt added food regime that I have been on has helped me thwart off the the disease....so far......
p.s. I still enjoy bacon, sausage etc but don't use salt out of the salt shaker..........
good for you....but its your siblings choice to continue to pour the salt on...good for them its called freedom people. I am sure some liberal politician will try to ban salt. It is one of the biggest killers in america....much worse than guns....why not???? lets ban everything that is not good for you or just tax the hell out of it. sin taxes are great.
If you want health care in the future you'd better:
1. not smoke - they have ways to tell
2. Not drink - blood work shows the amount of alcohol consumed
3. Not be fat, eat salt, butter, fat, grease, fries, burger, or anything not approved by a panel of vegans in San Francisco;
4. It will be ok to be gay, despite costing thousands of dollars per month for anti-viral drugs because its preferred by the DC types
5. high blood pressure will be banned and in order to get treatment you will need to lose weight;
6. persons suffering from diabetes will be given 6 months to get their A1C under 7 else none of their care will be paid for - no death panel, just personal choice to eat better and lose weight and exercise.
7. White people must get certified as being minority friendly - you must prove minority friends.
You KNOW ALL of this will come to pass - its just a matter of time . . .
They say that this is based upon research but the only research they ever site is what foods have what amount of sodium in them. Where is the research that says that sodium has a direct link to anything? You can say it's so but I really am tired of articles that claim to be definitive of a specific topic and yet they always disappoint.
Please tell me where the research is that says that sodium is really bad for you. Where is the research that actually links high sodium INTAKE with disease. Where is the research that says that Black Americans are more harmed from salt than the rest of the population; where is the study that says if your 39 you can eat more salt but at 40 you are a walking time bomb?
I eat a lot of salt. I like a lot of salt. I do try to limit my intake but I still don't know why. I have low blood pressure and no heart related conditions (heart healthy, yes I am). I had a work friend at one time who was well over 200 lbs and she took medication for high blood pressure and limited her intake of salt. She felt terrible on her medication; she arbitrarily quit. What happened, you say? Her blood pressure actually went down.
I really dont think that these DOCTORS of TODAY have ANY FRIGGEN IDEA of what thet they are talking about!
They go on Ideas that are hundres of years old! With no Merit and NO PROOF!
A hundred years ago, If you ate a 50 pound block of salt and died, IT MUST BE THE SALT! End of medical story!
Today, these QUACKS are even LESS informed! MODERN MEDICAL STUDENTS are TAUGHT from a book that was popular 50 YEARS AGO! They still think germs and bacteria are a joke from that nut louie pasture!
Imagine, a bug so small we cant see it, what a bunch of BULL! Go ahead, scratch yer balls, then do a brain transplant, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
do you work for Morton's Salt or what? are you a friggin idiot? It has been known for years that salt has an effect on blood pressure. I quit because in the mid 70's my spouse was told to lay off the salt for heart and blood pressure problems.
On the other hand maybe you should pour the salt on.....it might bring you some enlightenment.
Both poisons, Sodium and Chloride, are necessary for our bodies to survive period. My and my family member's blood pressure is never extremely high and we were all raised in the South eating Southern-cooked food (definitely not low salt) especially back in the Fifties, when I was a child. It's genetic methinks, at least that's what I have been told. Unfortunately, we were born to die, it happens, tho hopefully not too quickly. I find it's better to listen to the old "Queen" song from "Highlander". "Who wants to live forever?" Eat, drink, and be merry folks, for tomorrow you may die.
Matt Dahn...you should be ashamed of your complete ignorance.
I just completed my Masters in Biology and am attending medical school in the Fall. You are out of your damn mind if you think that bacteria are not real! Furthermore, you are too ignorant to understand the micro-level science that is the basis for articles such as this one. Sodium and Potassium are key players at the molecular level for every function your body system carries out. And yes, it does have a direct effect on blood pressure and your health. A simple experiment could show you that.
Try educating yourself before you blab off on a topic you are clueless about. I know that science is probably a bit over your head, but give it a try...even 5th grade science could help you out, bud.
Furthermore, taking a stab at the medical community? Wow, priceless. Medical school curriculum changes yearly, science is constantly progressing but you wouldn't know much about that now would you? Those "idiot clueless doctors" have over 15 years of education under their belt and they save countless lives everyday...do you think that's just luck?
Oh, and when I'm a surgeon in the next 4-6 years, I'll make sure wipe my ass, then make an unsterile incision and stick my gloveless, unwashed hands in your chest cavity...you'll be dead of infection within a week, guaranteed. Good thing, it'll be one less ignorant person walking the streets.
It is unequivocably none of the Center for Disease Control's Fu..ing business ..Period! I also eat a lot of salt and like it, and my blood pressure is low and am heart healthy. Government, stay the hell out of our lives!!!
The Romans taxed salt to fund wars. The CDC makes war on many food items and non food items the masses consume. They do this so as to preserve our health. Congress is contantly looking for ways to raise capital by levying taxes and raising said taxes. First step for the government is to demonize the product. Then put forward the argument the people are incapable of making correct personal choices.
Sugar and salt are both being bandied about as negative health commodities. Next, comes the tax.
Salt is a problem? Give me a break. How about an article about all of the Americans who are consuming too much cocaine and causing a border war which the government won't seriously combat because they don't want to anger the illegals who will eventually become democrat voters.
I don't doubt that fat ass America eats too much of anything... but these bull @!$%# government levels will have us all 6 foot tall and a 135 pounds and lookin like those cronies on the chicken caosts inFlorida!
I believe in moderation... but that goes both ways! When i can't enjoy a steak anyore with a REAL ceasar salad ( both of which will put me over that USDA DOSE of salt... throw the dirt in on my ass... i'll punch my own ticket out of this world... just how long do yo want to be around eatin all thease USDA limits
But we all have to pay for your poor choices through higher health insurance rates after you land in the hospital and need open heart surgery, stints, or long term care after you get a comma. And you'll be saying, I would have taken better care of myself if I knew I'd last this long! None uf us wants to do without, but at least we're getting better information than the neandrithals did (who only lived 20 or so years).
The Neanderthals were also eating too much salt!? Their insurance premiums probably skyrocketed to twenty clam shells a lunar cycle! And, by the way, I'm not convinced that our science prophets are giving us better information than the Neanderthal received from their shamans.
MartyinLA, I just can't help pointing out the faux-pas in your statement regarding the "need for open heart surgery, stints, or long term care after you get a COMMA". Sorry but that was literally the funniest dang type-o I have read in years!! I simply had no idea that food choices would have anything to do with a punctuation mark in the English language :) :)
Thanks for the laugh! :>) No disrespect intended...
I have LOW blood pressure; the kind where my hands and feet are cold all the time and I feel dizzy when I stand up too quickly. Guess what? Doctors don't care because everyone's been trained to be too focused on high blood pressure. They think my low blood pressure is GOOD. So I try to eat as much salt as possible to help raise my blood pressure. These guys need to get a life and have a little balance.
I have low blood pressure too, and there is no real reason for you to try to raise it unless you're like, passing out because of it. Eating as much salt as possible just to raise your blood pressure is plain ignorant and detrimental to your health. At least admit you eat a lot of salt because salty foods taste good, but don't try to act like you're doing it for healthy reasons.
Then let's stop talking about and get the food manufacturers to stop putting too much sodium in their products. Its not the sodium chloride (table salt) that is in excess, it's the sodium nitrite/nitrate/phosphate/etc that gets over done in the foods. The only control consumers have over that is not to buy the products laced with sodium. Pick up just about any pre-packaged meal and read the sodium content in it. If we don't have time to cook fresh at home we're screwed.
If this is something you feel strongly about then you have to take the time to prepare your own food. Take some personal responsibility for yourself and your choices and don't expect the government to be your mommy all the time. The rest of us don't want to pay for it.
Americans pay too much in taxes. Life is a bitch and then you die. I would rather die with a shaker of salt in my hand and money in my pocket than broke under a socialist government.
I'm not surprised to hear this. Most of the preprocessed stuff in the supermarket is completely inedible by my taste preference because of the amount of salt. Don't they understand people can add salt if they want more but if we don't like a lot we can't take it out? I wish companies would put less in and let us decide for ourselves how much salt we want. I don't want the government regulating it though - that's none of their business.
The government has the perfect tool for a moratorium on salt. it goes into full effect in 2014. You don't even have to agree or sign up. That has already been done for (to) you.
My doctor told me a long time ago that salt was only harmful if you had any form of kidney disease he also told that it had little or no bearing on high blood pressure. Caffeine and nicotine and alcohol were the ones to stay away from. I tend to believe my doctor over the government and big brother.
I have a bulletin for you. Most Americans consume too much, period. We drink too much coffee, too much soda, beer and liquior, we eat too much sugar, processed foods, fatty foods. O-well, the list goes on and on. I wish these clowns would come out with something new.
Already N.Y. City is trying to mandate how much salt restaurants can put on food. Obama is trying to regulate what we eat and drink and how much exercise we get in his health care bill. Give me a break. Fight our wars, build our highways, clean up the gulf. That should be enough to keep him and the rest of Washington busy until 2012.
As some one with high blood pressue, I've become an avid reader of labels. Did you know that 1 slice of bread has 10% of your daily intake of salt? 2 slices of bread, some cold cuts and that sandwich has about 40%. Salt in our diets is killing us. I've noticed if I chow down on salami for a few days, up up up goes the pressure. Go to enough restaurants or fast food joints, and up up up it goes. You don't even know you have high blood pressure unless you doctor catches it or you drop dead. I very much appreciate any scientific studies on the causes of high blood pressure. In the end, it will save us all money from having to treat those with high blood pressure as this impacts what we pay for health insurance. Hope we all live long healthy lives!
My question is why are so many processed foods loaded with salt? Some cold processed meats (hot dogs, bologna) and canned meats, soups, chli, etc. are loaded with sodium--often 750 plus mg per serving. If you eat more than one serving, as many people do, you get well over 1000 mg of sodium at one sitting. This one area where significant reductions could be made.
Salt is a preservative. I remember my great-uncle butchering his own meat and curing it with salt, in a huge wooden box so heavy it took six men to lift it.
Yes, but with modern canning and refrigeration methods, you need salt to preserve any processed meat or canned goods. The salt is in there for the taste. The manufacturers know that Americans have become almost addicted to the flavor that salt imparts to processed foods.
And whats next MOST AMERICANS...... SO what..... those who think they know whats better for the public should MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS..............................................
Duh this is news?

I got news for everybody. Listen carefully, I've done research on this. If you live long enough, its going to kill you !

Show me proof that the government is attempting to outlaw salt, otherwise your little statement comes off as ignorant and paranoid.
crstl
there was no proof three years ago that california was going to ban trans fat oils....guess what it happened.
i dont think they will ban...but tax heavily...oh yes.
SO WHAT!!!! Who cares? Are there really people out there wringing their hands and furrowing their brows over this stuff? If there are....get a life!
What did this study cost us?
Hey, CDC, crawl back into your hole and worry about disease...
The Healthcare police will soon be monitoring each home's salt intake. Mark my words! Anything they deem "unhealthy", will be strictly monitored.
Will Gene Simmons of Kiss be more closely monitored because he can lick his own forehead?
The Romans taxed salt to fund wars. The CDC makes war on many food items and non food items the masses consume. They do this so as to preserve our health. you funny.
This article is on the topic of nutrition and health, NOT drug abusers and politics.

All enough true, except if you are in any insurance plan you are PAYING for those who not monitor their health. Sorry if facts confuse you.
hey richard they want to legalize drugs guess that's better for you.

I smell a future tax in here somewhere.
...and several new federal agencies to save us from ourselves.
Some school districts have already put a stop to bake sales becasue some people eat too much of the wrong things.
Americans pay too much in taxes. Life is a bitch and then you die. I would rather die with a shaker of salt in my hand and money in my pocket than broke under a socialist government.
Duh -- Like you needed a study to figure this out? Prevention Magazine said this 20 years ago!
Americans eating too much salt....Government, please save us.
Americans eating too much red meat....Government, please save us.
Americans eating too much trans fats....Government, please save us.
Americans eating too much sugar....Government, please save us.

Americans are racist....Government, please save us.
Americans getting too much information....Government, please save us from Limbaugh.
Americans clinging to their bibles and guns....Government, please save us.
Americans don't have health insurance....Government, please give us "free" healthcare (be careful of the fine print).
America has too many lawyers....Government, uh, can't save you.
I guess you left "this" out because it's the one thing the Government does to us without being asked...
Americans have inadequate sex lives...
Centerpath is obviously a fast food moron that wants to quote idiotic nitrate content. This Peta prone jerk should exit now!

Yep Kornfed I'm with ya. I like about a tablespoon or two on my daily bowl of government bull@!$%#, it make's it go down a little better.
