It was not your time, your money nor your energy. But the time, money and energy people you don't know spent on their cat has the potential to benefit someone you may someday know. What an excellent investment!
Do you not realize that medical advances are made possible by testing it out on animals first. This technology will help future human amputees. This family did not use your time, money or energy so what is your problem with them?
This is far from a waste of time. A chemical that allows flesh to fuse onto an inorganic part is not only important but needed. This will allow us to directly fuse articulating robotic limbs directly to our skeletal structure instead of the mount on designs that are in use today. Additionally, we can use permanent tubing for dialysis, intestinal bypasses, heart pump replacement, and a myriad of other uses.
All for the low price of testing it on a cat and releiving some of its suffering in the process.
Nope, this is a great thing, sorry for those of you too narrow minded to see it as a important step forward to healing human beings.
It's a perfect testing ground for advances in prosthesis. The cat-owners win, the cat wins, the doctor gains experience and the medical community gathers information vital to developing prostheses for humans that might be better integrated with our bio-structure. And no tax-payer money had to fund it. Think of it as privately-financed humane animal testing.
I agree with Rick, not your time/money spent that was wasted......this is a great thing towards possible future medicine.......and bless that poor little cat!!!
Geezstring how much of your money did you spend on this ($0), how much of your energy went into this (O) and I know the waste of time you spent by reading and posting is a huge loss to you so maybe you should sue. Of course you will have to go to England to do that so do us a favor and once you are there stay there.
This is awesome a cat with bionic legs. I personally think this is NOT a waste of money or energy anyone else that thinks this is closed minded and a idiot. If we can put artificial legs on a cat and have a substance that makes bone and skin grow and attach better to the artificial material today....think about tomorrow. We even have implants for humans that are controlled through there nerves like a real hand or foot you know. So this cat getting bionic legs is just practice to better and further this type of technology for the future. so this is not a waste of money or time. Like one person said this is one step closer to create bionic arms or legs to help us lift heavier things like cars or run faster or leap higher. bionic lungs, hearts just like the movie Repo men. (but without the whole repo thing) So with Oscar and other humans and animals that had this type of surgery we are a step closer to better this.
It furthers our knowledge of medical science. Its also about compassion. No room in the world for people like you. None at all. Not if I have a say in it.
As far as the cost is concerned, we just paid about $3500 to get our Dacshund back surgery, so no, it isn't unheard of that people would pay that price if they can. True, not everyone can afford that and we are not well off by any means, but we dug into our savings because our pets are part of our family and good for these people who did this for their cat and not writing the animal off. Let me be clear here, if someone really cannot afford something like this then they would have no choice, but if you have the choice, choose in favor of the critter.
all i can say is WOW!this will hopefully further the advancement of people need ing artificial limbs. God Bless those doctors, and Bravo for that little Kitty and congrats to everybody.
Geez.........String...........your comment reflects one negative and selfish person.
If your legs were harvested in a combine I'm sure you would want someone to help you, but with your narcissistic views on life I'm sure you don't have too many people that would come to your aid.
In life, you reap what you sew. Next time, you might want to do a better job of seeding your comments.
I echo sick of this and eoin in that this could have human applications and if geez string ever needs it then it would be a waste of time, money and energy on him/her.
Christians and their nutjob human-centrist view of the world always out themselves. Well, Mr Jesus-freak, there are human applications for the technology in the future, so don't get your disciples robe in a bunch. Oh, your computer, TV, car, etc... also wastes of time, money and energy. God wanted you to be a farmer. Didn't you read Genesis?
Twisted you are appropriatedly names, how do you even know this person is a Christian let alone a Jesus Freak. I am a Christian and I think the human applications of this development are absolutely fabulous. You are certainly projecting a lot that you obviously don't know anything about.
Like I said, you always out yourself. By your own admission, you just care about how the technology will apply to humans. You could care less about the saving of a simple little cat, because the work of fiction inspired by your Invisible Sky Buddy tells you their lives are worth less than yours. A mammal is a mammal is a mammal...
"Look at the birds of the air......yet your heavenly Father feeds them." Jesus Christ said this. I would think He was a better judge of Christian values than TwistedCross. If God cares about birds, He cares about cats. After all, He created them!!!
Twisted Cross -- Your second post cleared it up for me (I think). The cat should have been helped because he needed it, and not only because the knowledge gained will ultimately help people (which it will). I'm not religious either and I think religious fanaticsm and that human-centric way of looking at things is outdated. But I've known people I wouldn't talk religion with but who I could connect with through love of animals. It's that saying, a society is judged by its treatment of animals. Any society without compassion for its weaker members isn't worth being a part of.
I was about to wonder, even though I disagree with Geezstring, why everyone goes out of their way to say so many hateful things about him. And then this VERY hateful post here ripping on his religion? I don't have many nice things to say about typical Christians either but damn man, have some tact.
Then I read some of Geezstrings comments elsewhere. I can at least say he's earned everything said about him. Seriously, what a douche.
Just read your second posting after overlooking it, Twisted. You need to settle down and step back to take a look at how ridiculous you're acting. Be an adult.
Twisted I don't know why you are hostile to christians, but that comment is very stereotypical and does not have much proof behind it...if 1 american says they dislike helping animals then is it right for me to say americans are nut-jobs with a human-centric view?...No, in the same way please do not place every christian under the same category. I am a christian and I love animals, and have had tons of pets. I have recently lost my best friend of a dog and I would have paid whatever if I could have to keep her here. And twisted your first and second comment contradict themselves....in your first you mention that it has human application later, yet nothing about the animal, but than you come back a rudely talk to freedom insulting him for also saying it has human application. So I think you should get your own beliefs straight before you bash others.
Golly Ge geez string, looks like there are still compassionate people in the world and you are not one of them.. God's creatures deserve help from us. After all it was a man made machine that took his legs.
Doctors were further astounded as the little kitty began running at 60 mph and making huge leaps with that characteristic bionic slo-mo motion and sound effects: Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha!!
"We can make your cat better than he was before! Better, stronger, faster!" :-)
I wished I had the money and the availability of this technology for my rescued cat Hank. He was rescued from a high-kill shelter and he lost a paw on his right rear leg, probably due to a trap. We had no choice but to amputate the entire leg because he kept getting off-balance and scratching-up the stub to the point of bleeding. He now runs like a demented rabbit on 3 legs, faster than my two other 4-legged cats. I can imagine what would Hank be if he had 4 legs to "stand" on...
My kitty was a stray. She hadn't even made it to a shelter. Only a few weeks old, shouldn't have even been fully weaned yet, and someone dumped her by the church on a day when there were kids' activities. I guess they figured one of us Christian parents would be soft-hearted enough to take her home. And apparently they figured right, that was over two years ago and I've been vacuuming up cat hair and buying her cat-toys ever since. Although Jesus taught that we are of "more value than the sparrows," the Bible also teaches that we are responsible for caring for God's creation. That includes cats.
What's the matter tornadoes28 you don't like Geezstring getting all the attention. If you really read the article you would realize it is going to help humans. They got the skin to attach to the metal with no infection. Never been done before. Now hopefully they will be able to get human skin to do the same. Small minds think alike and that is always negative.
I'm sure the British woman who lost an arm in the subway bombings, and who they're going to try this technique on, is very glad that Oscar's owners didn't put him to sleep and donate the money to a human charity.
Anyone who thinks this was waste of money should never buy new clothes, got out to dinner, go to a movie, etc. Unless you're donating all your disposable income to something that benefits the greater good (whatever you think that is), you have no room to talk.
My guess is that it's conservatives/Republicans in general that find this to be a waste of time and money...just don't try telling them how to spend THEIR money. They probably wouldn't hear you anyway since they're too busy telling the rest of us how to live.
Scott, I am conservative and can tell you I am thrilled for this kitty. I love animals, all animals and never find any kindness towards any animal a waste. We are their keepers.
Do you think it was a waste? You didn't say you just judged.
Why must you people take everything and turn it into a political debate... There is nothing in this article about liberals or conservatives. (Or Obama and US Healthcare reform...) I guess it is because Republicans never miss a chance to take a shot at Democrats or vice versa. Follow George Washingtons advice and steer clear of political parites and make up your own mind instead of following someone elses agenda.
On topic: I think this is one of the most awesome pet health surgeries I have ever seen. Forget parties - a true conservative would say 'It's their money, they can do what ever they want with it - except used to harm another citizen'. The farmers paid for it - they got results and treasure that results. Dr's want more people to do what these farmers did so they can learn more (the science) and make more ($$$) and get better at it. It used to only be that way here in the USA - you have the doctor do something and they send you a bill directly.
However, if Canadian's cannot spend their own money to buy a procedure they want, as it is illegal go to a doctor outside the government's system, then there's a chance the procedure may not get done for months and months or ever if a government buraucrat deems that you will not benefit enough because of it then you may not have it done at all because of rationing. That's why Canadian's have to travel to the USA to get things they need done.
The only people that find this a waste of time and money are people that don't have use for animals - that's an old thought, not a political one. I probably donated more than you, money I was "free" to spend how ever I wanted - and not taken from me. Promoting consumer spending is something lowering taxes will do by all means.
